RE: ESM Spitfire 72.5
hi, the DLE 35 fits no problem, no mods req to the firewall, but I beefed up the inside, so far I have fitted the engine and cowl, the ailerons and flaps are finished, I havent joined the wings as yet, the tail plane is on, dont know about other kits, but mine came with a 12mm aluminum tube, but the holes in the tailplane are only 10mm, lucky for a stock of C/F, I had some 10mm tube, so that is in, fit the tail plane first, then the elevators, I am using C/F rods instead of the pull, pull, system, 2 servos, they are in and ready to hook up, will be using pull, pull for the rudder, the U/C mounts seem to be a lot better than the 47 and the 51, but I am waiting for my Sierra retracts, a fair bit has been done to lighten the tail end, the elevators and tail plane weigh almost nothing. I like the look of the cowl and the canopy is a beauty. thinking about a cockpit kit. Oldtimer.

RE: ESM SEA FURY 80
hi, good to hear someone has got one of these, we are still waiting in Australia, (originally due in May) check with CJ about the retracts, I was going to send him measurements when I received my kit, to see what size we need, very interested to find out how the engine will fit, will also be following this thread. RE: Eneloop batteries for ignition?
double check the Ignition unit, the required voltage is very important, I have a DLE and an RCG engine, they specify a 4 cell pack, 4.8 volts, have heard of a Zenoah pack blowing with a 5 cell pack, but my latest engine a DLA56 specifies a 2 cell Lipo which is higher voltage again. I have used Eneloop packs for flight packs since they came out, for my War Birds with Gas engines I use an Eneloop pack for the Ignition and then 2 packs for the Receiver. I use JR 2.4 radio and I am starting to change over to LiFePo4 packs, they look like a 2 cell Lipo, but are 6.6 volts, but higher discharge rates than Eneloop batteries. confused yet, there are lots of options and even more opinions. RE: ESM P-51B-Impressions
hi, I bought my Kit in Australia because we cant get them from Overseas, but I bought the retracts from VQ Warbirds, he also sells the kits, http://www.vqwarbirds.com/product_info.php?cPath=31&products_id=65&osCsid=3ab97f641b38b68d48888efdcd1bf902 good to deal with, then I bought a Custom cut spinner from Dave Brown Products, https://www.dbproducts.com/index2.htm get him to cut it for the prop you are going to use, I have a DLE30 in my P-47, a JXF 19x8 is a good match, I think JXF is the same as XOAR. RE: ESM P-51B-Impressions
hi, good model, looks great, not as nice to fly as the P-47, but read this thread, CofG about 120 from the centre of the wing, is a lot better, the book is WRONG, will go very well with that engine choice, as to the ESM Electric retracts, probably give them a miss until they sort them out, the air are great. there are a couple of threads around about the new ESM electric retracts, look them up. RE: ARF 1/5th SEA FURY WANTED??
there hasnt been much info about the new ESM Sea Fury as yet, I think they are in stock in the USA, no idea when they will arrive in Australia, been on order for 6 months now, but it should go well with a 50 in it, I have a DLA56 waiting for when mine eventually arrives. Oldtimer

RE: ESM P51b Engine Help
its a War Bird, they need a bit of grunt, go for the 150, the 180 would be even better, you will need the weight up front. Oldtimer

RE: ESM P51b Engine Help
hi, cant give you any info about a 4 stroke, but I can about the model. first off the book CofG is WRONG, set it at a MAX of 130mm back from the centre join of the wing, 120 would be even better. that is where I have mine. I have the ESM P-51B model, with an RCG26 in it, in hindsight I wish I had put the DLE 30 in, but it flies well with the 26, this model looks great in the air and on the ground, there are a lot of D models around, but not that many B models. the other thing is beef up the undercarriage mounts, then tilt them forward as far as you can, have the back mount almost level with the wing, it will improve ground handling a LOT. the balsa on the L/E where the wing locating pins glue in was very soft on mine, they came loose, with the balsa still stuck to them, I put longer dowels in and made up brackets to hold them in place. there are a couple of threads to have a read of, http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1141908 .... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9371367/anchors_9371367/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9371367 ... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9331111/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm so you have a bit of light reading ahead. the book control throws for elevators are also out of dream land, ailerons are reasonable, but be careful of the elevators, I think I have about 10mm up. RE: ESM electric retracts?
Any update on these units, are the failed units being replaced free of charge, I have heard the Factory are providing warranty, are the local hobby shops passing it on, we are still waiting for the Sea Fury to arrive in Australia, it comes with the electric retracts, as the only option, as far as I know no other company makes retracts for the new ESM Sea Fury, I have tried Sierra, they havent been able to get a set as yet, the local supplier here wont say if they will give any warranty on the retracts, there should be a lot of these units out there that are working as they should, I would expect we are mainly hearing about the units that are failing and there seems to be quite a few, after all that is one of the main benefits of these forums, to point out the good and the bad to help others (they definitely helped me with the correct CofG for the ESM P-51) Oldtimer.

RE: Exhaust staining on ESM planes

RE: favorite retract valve
hi, I didnt know you could get a 1 piece unit. will have to have a look. one that does require a separate servo, is the ROBART, unit, they have one that can be speed / flow adjusted, to give scale style looks, I have a couple of them, not all that impressed, there are not enough threads where the adjuster screws in, it is only in a couple of turns, it is very easy to strip the threads out, quite a bit of playing around to get the speed the way I wish then as the lock nut is tightened it all changes again, as I said, not all that impressed, the design could be improved. they are a bit of a hassle getting the throw set up correctly for the servo, but seem reliable, I give all my systems a squirt of "Inox" every so often, to keep them lubricated, it will work its way right through the entire system over time. RE: Do you have ESM Electric Retracts?
the story is if you buy the ESM retracts we can ONLY get the new Electric versions, they have stopped making or supplying the old AIR systems, they had a few hassles, but they could be fixed, but it sounds like the new ones are replacement only. can air cylinders be fitted into the new electric retracts, or are they a totally different design. does anyone else make retracts to fit the new Sea Fury Oldtimer.

hi, I am waiting for the new ESM Sea Fury, it is due into Australia some time this month, it comes with the electric retracts, after reading a few of these comments I am interested in staying with the old fashioned Air system, does anyone know if they are still an option. I have the P-47 and the P-51 with Air, a few very minor hassles but no problems with the operation. Oldtimer

RE: ESM P-51 Build thread
Hi, I have the ESM P-51 B model, the wings are fully sheeted on top, but only back to the Main Spar underneath, then covering, anyone building these kits dont take any notice of the book CofG, it is WRONG. it should be 130mm MAX back from the centre line of the wing, 120 would be better, also tilt the undercarriage right forward, for better ground handling. it will fly well with a 26cc gas engine, (I have the RCG 26 in mine) but a 30 would be a lot better. RE: H9 P-51D Mustang .60 balancing problem
I have had several different P-51's over quite a few years, a Model Tech, the H9 Blue nose and now an ESM 51, moving the CofG back can be fatal, the CofG is for flying, not ground handling, I had to tilt the Undercarriage forward as "spaceworm" has said above on all my 51's to improve the ground handling, moving the fuel tank back to the CofG, or as close to it is a good idea as well, I had a small 2oz tank right up front in my H9 51 then another tank almost on the CofG, it was a fair bit of fiddling to get it all to fit, but, the combination of tilting the gear forward and the tank worked, even on grass, if it flies OK, moving the CofG back to improve ground handling could be fatal. CofG and elevator throws are VERY IMPORTANT on War Birds. Oldtimer.

RE: How Do You Cut Out Plastic Parts?
I have found ESM type plastic bits are very brittle and will crack, put them in hot water, as hot as you can put your hand in, rough cut a bit then back in the water, then use a Dremel for final finish. Oldtimer.

RE: spark plugs
re Spark Plugs, how do we know we are buying the genuine article, here in Australia the "NGK CM6" plugs vary in price from $8 each to about $15, that is from one hobby shop to another, this particular plug wouldnt be all that common, where are they made, where are they supposed to be made, I have read in these threads not to use the plug that comes with the "cheap engines" fair enough, I have had problems with a so called genuine NGK CM6 brand plug, swapped it out and the engine went like a charm, I dont think I have ever had a crook plug in any of my cars over a lot of years, I know some will say buy from a reputable supplier, that didnt work for "Enron" how do we know we are getting the genuine article, the Chinese can copy any brand these days. thanks, Oldtimer.

re the NEW ESM Sea Fury
hello, Has anyone actually GOT one of the NEW Sea Fury model kits as yet, what size engine did you use, how does it fly, knowing ESM what is the fly CofG, they have been ridiculous in the past for some of their kits, way too far tail heavy, eg, the P-51 did you use the new Electric Retracts, what are they like, I have seen the TBM article, even 15 seconds is a bit slow. this is an 80 in model, seems to need a 50cc engine, so it will be heavier, are the retracts still the same as the 72 in kits, or have they beefed them up a bit. thanks, Oldtimer.

hi, has anyone actually got one of these as yet, or at least seen one up close, I am interested in one as well, with a 50cc engine, they havent been released in Australia as yet, but I am a bit worried about the new electric retract system, I already have the ESM P-47, very happy with it, a very nice model to fly. hi, I have several 30cc size Warbirds, I run 2 Eneloop packs in each model, both 5 cell packs, plus a 4 cell pack for the engine, never had a problem, BUT, it depends on the size of the digital servos you are using and the type of model you are flying, the type of radio, all you have said is 7 digital servos, more info would help. RE: New guy needs help with chargers
hi, first off go to your local club and have a talk to the members, see what is being used, what they recommend, but value for $$ this one is as good as most people need, it will keep you charged for now, then if you start to get specialised needs or huge big batteries then look about for something else, I have several of these, very happy with them. there are better chargers out there that are a lot more expensive as well, but these are good. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7028__Turnigy_Accucel_6_50W_6A_Balancer_Charger_w_accessories.html Oldtimer.

RE: Life or a123 as a receiver pack
hi, re the 35 amps, I thought the same, so I asked an electrical engineer that is into models, he said the buzz bar in the receiver "could ?" probably handle that much for an extremely short period of time, but didnt think the pins could, either way, I think there would be smoke. but then, these forums are only an opinion. I have ordered several packs of the a123 style packs, I will give them a good testing before I put them into my 47. Oldtimer.

RE: Life or a123 as a receiver pack
hi all, thanks for the answers, this type of battery is all new to me, I found an article on the web about the "hard case" style without a balance lead, basically it said if you give them a slow charge every so often it will balance them out. re the Data Port, I asked a question on the JR and Spectrum thread about hooking up 2 battery packs, the answers were use the Battery port on the receiver, then the second battery can be plugged into the Data port on the 9x receivers, the way it was explained was it is a common buzz bar for the positive, the same for the negative, it is only the control pin that is separate for each channel. the Voltage is listed in the manual, for the receiver, but there is no amp limits, one reply stated 35 amps and can peak out at 50 amps, going through the receiver, I was very surprised by that, cant imagine the wires from the batteries handling that many amps. thanks, Oldtimer.

Life or a123 as a receiver pack
hi, I have been recommended to change over my Receiver packs, to the Lithium Iron / a123 / Life, style of batteries, it is rather confusing, they all seem to be similar and suitable. the model is a G/S P-47, with 7 digital servos, plus ordinary servos as well, air retracts, I plan on running 2 receiver packs, I have previously used 5 cell Eneloop batteries in other models, without a problem, I have a couple of the Accucel 6 chargers, I think I can use them to charge this style of pack are either of these packs any good, is one better than the other, do I need a pack with a Balance lead http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=14469 or this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=16576 I plan to plug 1 battery into the power port on the receiver, then the other into the Data port, a JR 9x receiver, 1 switch for each battery pack of course, do I need anything else in the system. thanks, Oldtimer.
