RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?
I guess (for now), of the ones discussed here, I'd have the Pulse at the top (60 or 125), then the Four-Star 60 (if it ever exists again), then the Phoenix 60 (thanks for that tip!). The Four-Star 60 kit seems to be available............doesn't take that long to build.
ORIGINAL: speedracerntrixie Even on most chinese engines the carbs are Walbro. Walbro carbs are made on just about every continent. I have yet to see one that wasnt 4-40 on both choke and throttle. A good double check would be to pull a screw off the diaphram cover and check what thread it is. I'd bet ya a goallon of 50-1 premix it's 4-40
Thanks again...........[8D] I reallly appreciate the help. I hope I haven't driven everyone crazy with my questions.
ORIGINAL: speedracerntrixie Oldtyme, as someone said ealier you do have to be very careful when removing the butterfy screw. Go slowly and take care not to bend the shaft. When you slide out the shaft it will be obvious where the detent ball is. Now the tricky part. The screw holding on the butterfly is usually 4-40. Carefully run a 4-40 tap through the shaft and use a new screw. Loc-tite

RE: Throttle servo buzzing for DLE20
ORIGINAL: speedracerntrixie I beleive that the spring that he is talking about is the detent spring for the choke. The choke shaft has a dimple in it on one end, the carb body has a hole on one side that matches up on that dimple. In the hole is a spring and steel ball. When the choke is full open or full closed the spring pushes the ball up into the dimple. This locks the choke into position. I have in the past removed the ball and spring so that the choke operated a little easier with a servo with no issues. Just make sure you have the end points set correctly.
speedracer.........I really would like to do what you suggest but someone here said that I could cause problems by taking out (forcing) the butterfly screws possibly cracking or mal-forming the shaft. You have had no such problems?? Please answer ASAPor feel free to email me at andynez@q.com with instructions. Thanks a lot in advance. Also, can I use the snap-on ball joints or do I have to use the bolt on ones?

truckracer....... and all others that responded...........thank you. I did read all responses and added an extension on the throttle arm and that took care of the problem. I also replace the more expensive 9202 servo with a 3001 and that is doing a good job. Now I am dealing with the bigger issue of trying to get a setup that will operate the choke without buzzing.........I'm committed to a choke servo so I'm in the middle of a quandry and there is no way that I can add an extension to the choke arm and I have been advised to remove the spring and detent ball from the choke arm and of course adivsed not to to that so I don't know what to do now.
ORIGINAL: pettit Or you can remove the choke plate and the choke shaft and then remove the spring and ball. Replace the choke shaft and the plate and reset the servo throw so the choke opens and closes fully with no buzzing. This way there is no force needed to set or release the choke.
Thanks Dick...............that's what I'll try.........seems to be the best solution if you want to choke with a servo.

I haven't flown mine yet......just setting it up but from what I've read a XOAR 17x6 is a perfect match for this engine. I've installed a DLE20 in my GP PT17 and others with this plane swear by the 17x6. Just my 2 cents and that's what it is probably worth but that is where I'm going. Andy

Choke Servo Buzzing for DLE20
Ok.........got the throttle servo buzzing fixed........switched to a S3001 servo, put the fiberglass extension on the throttle arm of the carb, adjusted the end points and it all works fine without buzzing...........that said................ I have the choke hooked up to a s3003 servo. The pushrod is a straight line path. When I adjust the servo so it has enough throw to fully engage and disengage the choke, it buzzes. When I adjust the buzz out the choke will not fully open or close............sorry but I want to learn and get this right and I want to use a servo. More advise please and thanks for the advice on my other post. Being 70 and starting something new is difficult. I've been flying glow engines since 1980 and now want to do gas. andy

RE: Throttle servo buzzing for DLE20
Again Dan............the plane is not complete so the engine is not running. All that is installed are the servos, the engine and the two control rods going from the engine to the servos. I'm thinking there is some kind of physical strain going on but I can't figure what it would be. The servo is mounted to hardwood with the usual grommets in rubber but that's all. I've set the endpoints both equally from center so there is no adverse travel for the servo.

Dan, The ignition module is not in the plane yet. I am just installing stuff. I have two switches and the battery for the ignition is next to the engine and the battery for the radio is back by the servos. This is a big plane.....GP PT17 Stearman. All ignition components will be in front of the firewall except the switch and tach. I am installing a Smart Fly Optical kill switch but the transmitter for that is back by the receiver and the receiver for the kill switch is also forward of the firewall. Any wires from the ignition going to the tach and switch will be shielded by copper tape and grounded to the engine block, other than that all ignition components are together and 12" or more from the receiver and servos.

Throttle servo buzzing for DLE20
The subject line might be misleading as I have read a number of threads on this but I have a different question. I ran Sullivan Gold-n-rods to both the choke nd throttle from the servos. I am using Futaba 9202 servos so I had plenty of torque. I have the choke adjusted to an on/off switch and it works fine.........forgot to mention that I have ball-joints on both ends. I set the end points of the throttle until I reached the full travel both ways for the throttle. When the throttle is wide open I get a buzzing at the servo. When I adjust the end point to where the servo stops buzzing I then shut the throttle fully off and when I re-open the throttle I can push the carb throttle arm further to fully open the throttle.........when I adjust the servo to hold this position, it starts buzzing again. I have put on a heavier duty (Dubro) servo arm to prevent any distortion because the standard Futaba servo arms wanted to twist when operating the throttle. The rods are supported in several places so there is no flex that I can determine. The spring is on the carb throttle arm as it arrived. So why is the servo buzzing at full open throttle? Yes I tried another servo. thanks, Andy

Pinch Test
OK I know this has probably covered a gazillion times but please.............once more. When you have the engine wide open and you pinch the fuel line and the engine picks up speed, it is too rich? And if it doesn't it's right? We tested an engine at the field and pinched the fuel line and not change occurred. I flew the plane and it started flying slower and slower so I brought it in and it was way hot. Someone commented that you want for the engine to pick up speed so it is running slightly rich.............which is correct? Thanks guys..............Andy
ORIGINAL: Aero Antics I was dredging google for sweet stik plans and found this thread. Let me give a big THANK YOU to Jim!! Most of the links I found on google were so out dated that I didnt notice that this one was recent. Well I got a bit excited when I downloaded the plans and didnt even read the whole thread. I came back today to read the thread and see if there was any more info. I built my Stick around 77 or 78 and I thought there was a couple of sheets of instructions. Its been long enough that I dont remeber if it had scalloped surfaces so I'm not sure of the version of the one I built. I lost mine on the first flight and have always wanted another one.
I built mine in 1983-84 and it should be the same as your old one. You are right, it came with a couple of sheets of instructions and two sheets of plans. It did not have scalloped surfaces...........the Das Little Stik did. I have the instructions and plans and plane still. I flew it last week and had an accident on landing............lots of crosswind..........all it did was break the old Kraft engine mount..........Hayes sells the exact same mount still so I ordered one and it came yesterday..........just need to drill it, mount the old OS45FSR and she's ready to go again. Cheers, Andy

RE: Non-OS engines
ORIGINAL: JohnBuckner Your manual attachment is correct and notice the mid/low range is on the left side of the engine on the fuel inlet cone and it is not on the right side of the the engine in the throttle barrel/throttle arm such as it is on all the FX engines and that is what you implied earlier. There is no comparison to the FX carbs that you suggested and I have repeatedly watched folks stick a screw driver in the throttle barrel thinking they were adjusting the mid/low range. This simple error that is common with bench committees needs to be pointed out and cleared up before suggesting someone has a defective engine and needs to be sent back after only two runs or whatever you orginally posted. John John............I don't know what you are talking about............I am staring at 2 91FX engines and the mid/low range adjustments are in the exact same place as the 75AX and I also find it very demeaning that you keep referring to "bench committees" Some of you sefl-proclaimed "experts" should refrain from talking without thinking. After about 2 hours of fiddling he managed to get it in the air and after about 3 mnutes of flight the engine flamed out. Unfortunately the plane was not in a good position and this cause total loss of the plane. The plane has been replaced but now we're all wondering whether he should return the engine for a replacement. Yes the fuel was new and the glow plug(s) were new.
