RE: Palmer 132
Hi everyone; I enjoy times like this because all of the theorists come out of the woodwork to the rescue with theory's which I generally tend to agree with. Here's the practical side: Palmer plans have the following incidence values; wing, plus 5 degrees, stab (which is symetrical by the way) minus 2 degrees, and the engines are at 0 degrees incidence. Models that have been flown locally by Mike Popescu of Miromar Lakes have required at least 3/4 of an inch of DOWN elevator to make the plane fly straight and level when built per plan . Unfortunately on Mike's first model the second flight was not good as he encountered a barbed wire fence on landing. He built another one just like the first but changed the stab incidence to 0 degrees and it flies well WITHOUT DOWN elevator! This is the only change that he made from the plans. Accordingly, according to theory and ledger domain if he had had a Semi-Symetrical airfoil on his stab he wouldn't have needed the down elevator in the first model. Some models do require certain systems JUST LIKE THE BIG ONES! Unless you have built one of these models then I suggest that you do before you start stating facts that you have no idea whether or not they apply to this particular model.

RE: Palmer 132
Sorry about the Symetrical error; it should have read Semi-Symetrical Airfoil and 5 degrees positive incidence in the wing. Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Olson; I'm pleased that your model flies well and you seem to enjoy it very much. I have been working on mine for a long time now and had to remove the old engines (RCV 91-CD's) because they were not very reliable on idle and generated too much heat for an enclosed installation such as ours. I am re-engining mine with Saito FG20 gas engines. They idle like no other engiine I have every had and top end is very good with lots of power. I'm almost finished now and hope to fly it sometime this Winter or Spring. Here in Florida we can fly all year round. Anyway for those of you who are building this airplane here is some news that may help you. I spoke to someone who has built six C-130 of various sizes. I asked him about the wing and tail incidence and where he set them. I told him that the Palmer Plans called for 6 degrees positive incidence in the wing and a minus 2 degrees in the stab. He told me that this is fine as long as you are using a Symetrical Airfoil mounted UP-SIDE DOWN as on the full size aircraft!! In other words the stab is a LIFTING stab. I didn't know this obviously but it makes sense not that I think about it. I'm pretty sure that Palmer missed this small detail when he designed this thing as everyone who has had success without a lot of down elevator trim has moved their stabilizer to a O degree incidence. Happy flying!! Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Both sites are reputable but order a "short kit" (no planking material). You can buy better planking material from a wood supplier like Balsa USA, etc. The stuff they send weighs a ton. Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Gary; You are quite welcome! I'm sure you will enjoy your new radio as much as I do mine. Just be sure to plan, plan, plan for what you want your C-130 to do other than fly. Four engines are a lot to handle and is probably the biggest issue for control function as I found out. If you are going electric it is a little easier but VERY costly for batteries, ESC and motors. RE: Palmer 132
Gary; I can't recommend any particular radio system as they are ALL very reliable on 2.4 Ghz. Don't buy anything on 72 as you may run into some type of interference depending on your area and you are in a very high probability area in San Bernadino. What I recommend you do is determine what it is you want to control and how you will accomplish it. There are six main controls that this model demands and they are throttle, aileron, elevator, rudder, gear, and flaps. Anything beyond that is extra. It also depends on whether or not you will use two channels for aileron and elevator. Throttles are an additional situation. You will have four engines to control, etc. When you have planned out your requirements THEN look at which radio best meets your requirements. Futaba has a 14 channel radio if you go wild on options or JR has a 12 channel if you need less options. I have a friend who has one of these things flying and he uses a Futaba 14 channel with one engine on each of four channels. Overkill as far as I am concerned but that was his solution. He flies his plane often with no problems. Incidently this is his second model as the first one had a happening with a barb wire fence on the second or third flight! He did change the stab incidence on the second model and he said it flew like a dream!! Your choice my friend, Frank

Gary; There have been several people building this model who have considered going the electric route. I cannot address this issue as I am as advertised an "oltimer" and not inclined to such expensive ventures. Perhaps someone else can be of more assistance. Send me your Email address and I would be pleased to send you photos. Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Gary; This project is VERY complex given the parts we have to work with. There are MANY ERRORS in the plans and I suggest you read through the whole set of threads as time permits. Many of the items discussed will save you a lot of grief in the long run. If it were mine to do again I would order the short kit and buy the planking wood from a good source. You need 6 to 8 pound wood to make some of the bends required in this kit. Different people building this aircraft have purchased their kits from various sources. I bought mine through All American Kit Cutters. Parts were fine but the planking material was miserable quality that's why I suggest you buy your own sheeting to suit youself. Page 22 is into the Fowler Flap area but several sheets earlier (maybe 19 or so) is where we really started the issue of Fowler Flaps. I have lots of pictures and the text in this thread is pretty much what was discussed. Several people have implemented the scheme with good success. Mike and I discussed it at length and I sent him my mockup of the system. From the test you will find that this method was borrowed and modified from a system that was in a P-38. Somewhere I mention the name of the article that was published in Model Airplane News in the ninety's. There were two systems, the original one was an air operated system, but subsequently they designed a servo driven system which is what I and others have used. Check the pages for the article description and if you can't find it look into the Model Airplane News plans service. It is in there listing. Regarding the tailplane incidence; I highly recommend that you NOT use the minus 2 degrees stipulated on the plans. Go for zero degrees or at least plus one or two degrees POSITIVE! If you use the plan incidence you will have to carry DOWN ELVEVATOR to make it fly straight. See Myron Popesceu's comments contained within this thread. I hope this helps you as the result of your efforts will be VERY rewarding. If you need more pictures than you see regardng the Fowler Flaps I will be happy to send them to you or post them herein. RE: Palmer 132
Greeter; Yes, sort of, if you can call Robart device true Fowler Flap movement. See the earlier flap discussion in this forum. Somewhere around page 22 or so. There is quite a bit of info there. This is a picture of my aircraft with "true Fowler flaps". Disscusion of this method is in the threads and how to do it. Frank

Props; I have been invited to static my Ck-130 at McDill AFB in Tampa, Fl. on March 20, 21. Is it possible that I could get a set of "scale" props before then?? It would certainly make the plane look more realistic. Please let me know. Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Jerry; To answer most of your questions on the "front door" see page 14 of this thread. It shows one Palmer front door and the actual diagram of the full size C-130. Others have different solutions so keep browsing the pages going forward. I can't remember the page that shows my door actuation but it uses two 2" stroke air cylinders to actuate the rear door and a 1" BVM air cylinder to move the front door. I use a gear/door sequencer to get everything synced up. Mine works great. The front door opens, rear door opens, gear comes out front door closes. Main gear doors follow the rear door and stay open. They are air operated too. Hope this helps, Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Sam; If the spinner comes out to 2.416" that will be fine with me as it's only a little over 1/32" bigger than my nose piece. No one will even notice the difference. Thanks for the compliment, Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Props; My plans show 2 3/8" spinners on ALL engines. I don't know where the 2 1/4 came from unless the drawings have been changed by the new owner to make them more standard. I bought some carbon fiber spinners for flying and would be interested in the scale props and spinner but only if the spinner is 2 3/8" dia. as per scale aircraft. Pics attached of my bird which has not flown yet because of a landing gear problem to be corrected soon. My beast is heavy at 49 pounds using RCV CD engines.

RE: Palmer 132
Props; This may be a blessing in disguise. If you have not already done it change the incidence in the stab to 0 degrees or even 1 or 2 degrees positive. You will be much happier if you do, otherwise plan to carry as much as 3/8" of DOWN elevetor to make it fly straight and level. This is based upon the first flight of Miron Propescu's C-130. Good luck on your rebuild. Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Olsen; Please be sure to put the stabilizer at 0 degrees incidence or even plus 1or 2 degrees. You will find a much better flying aircraft. If you don't make these changes you will have to carry at least 10mm of DOWN to keep the plane from climbing too much. Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Props; If you have the chance make the stab 0 degrees or even plus 1 or 2 degrees. This will definitely increase your flying enjoyment. Mike Propescu has changed his second model to 0 degrees as far as I know based upon the Hobby People C-130 ARF. It's a long haul to the end but definitely a project worth modeling. Best wishes on your build. Frank

RE: Palmer 132
Hi Guys; It seems that we have a new group of people who have taken on this challenge of building a C-130 from Palmer Plans. Lots of holes to step into so keep your head down and look! I'll post some pictures of my endeavour so far. Its not ready yet because I have been looking for and aircraft painted in the color scheme I chose. I finally found it in two places; Jordan and the Philippines so now I can finish the exterior details.

RE: Palmer 132" C-130 Build
Roger; I would advise you most strongly to change the incidence of the stabilizer to 0 degrees instead of the -2 degrees on the plans. Mike Propescu has flown his aircraft and it required 3/8" DOWN ELEVATOR to make it fly straight and level. He is building a second model and is making the above change based upon his experience. If I could change mine I would but it is in the finishing stages now and too late without MAJOR surgery. Frank
