ORIGINAL: ram3500-RCU Here are the mains.
Gary, on the second picture of post 295, when gear is deployed (lowered), the threaded rod extends pretty far back. Would that interfere with the main spar?

RE: COMP ARF 110
Sam, I built my plug-in version using many tips you and Paul shared with everyone here. Thanks. I set my CG as specified on the manual (1/2 inches in frot of the front edge of the spar, when looking at the top of the wing), and it was good. One reminder, have you considered sending your retract back to Darrel for some modifications? I did it for the peace of mind. Onewing

COMP ARF Corsair with 3W157TS maiden flight video
OK guys, here are some picture of my Composite ARF Corsair, powered by a 3W157TS. Barry (u2fast) and a couple of friends maidened it for me today. All went well (Barry made it look easy). 3W157 has more than enough power. Barry used half throttle most of the time. I don't have a muffler. So, it sounds great too. Pictures were taken by Greg Walker. Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKQpp-M6ks8

RE: COMP ARF Corsair with 3W157TS maiden flight video
[image]More info on this airplane. 1. According to Barry, it is as easy to fly as a Top Flight GS Corsair. He suggested more elevator throws than specified on the manual, as he used almost all the elevator during landing. 2. I follow Sam Parfitt's build thread on almost everything. 3. CG is set per instruction book: 1/2" in front of the spar, when looked from the top of the wing. 4. It is a plug-in wing. I ended up adding 4.75 lb of nose weight. Total weights is 54 lb. 5. Servos: Flaps: 4 Hitec 5645, Ailerons: 2 JR 8711, Elevators: 2 Hitec 5645, Rudder: 1 JR 8711. 6. Dynamic Balsa cockpit, Warbird Color paint, Star-and-Bar stenciles from GetStencile, Normenclature from Tailormade Decals. 7. Smart-Fly EQ-10 power expander. 2 Fromeco batteries for receiver / servos. 2 JR NiCd batteries for ignition. 8. 3W157TS engine, with Menz 32-12 propeller. Here is a picture with two gull wings:
ORIGINAL: u2fast was out at bomber yesterday for a field workday and to do a maiden on a friends corsair. the field is in tip top shape! as you can see, some guys are there already. see you there.
Barry, thank you again for doing the maiden flight of my CompARf Corsair. At home, we found some of the brazing on the exhaust pipe became loose. So, I have to get that fixed. Bomber field is in great shape, and the weather will be perfect. This picture was taken by Greg Walker.

RE: CARF F4U-1 Corsair build thread
Barry (u2fast) and a couple of friends maidened mine this afternoon. Everything went smoothly (Barry made it look easy). 3W157TS for power, plug-in wing. With a full cockpit and air-operated sliding canopy, it weights 54 lb. No issue with the landing gear, but I am glad I had the modification done anyway. Will post a couple of pictures when I get them.

RE: CARF F4U-1 Corsair build thread
ORIGINAL: ram3500-RCU
ORIGINAL: JackL What is the mod that Darrell is doing to the gear? I'm not sure which version of the gear I have, but they don't seem to lock very well..... I'm about to install the gear in my Corsair, but it sounds like I should send them in for the mod first.....
If I understood what Darrel was explaining this morning, he puts welds on the bracket that holds the end of the cylinder. This bracket is held in place with two 4-40 bolts on our gear. If a hard landing pushes on this bracket hard enough to stretch or bend these bolts, the gear will be out of adjustment, and may not lock down all the way. Being under the mount, one may not notice the damage till is is too late.
Those are the things Darrel did for me: 1. Pictures 1 and 2. Darrel welded the brackets that hold the end of the cylinders. 2. Picture 3. Darrel made my cylinder have a longer stroke. By doing this, I can move my "collar" a little closer to the wheel, have a positive lock, and have the wheels fully retracted into the wheel well.

RE: CARF F4U-1 Corsair build thread
ORIGINAL: ram3500-RCU Spoke with Darrel today. Had a nice conversation. He is sending me two sets of updated front wing hinges (the new design is being included in all new kits with folding wings as of a couple months ago), that will eliminate the need for the little door on the front, and he is also doing the mod to the gear for me. I guess it is possible to 'tweak' them in a very hard landing,(and as Darrel said, at 60lbs, it doesn't even need to be that hard, to exert tremendous pressure on the point in question), to the point where it is difficult for them to stay locked. I'll post some pictures when I get it back. Should correct the problem some are having. Also spoke with Mitch at Down & Locked. We should have the electric gear for Corsair #2 back in a few days. Again, pictures will follow.
My landing gear is the very early version. So, after talking to Darrel, I sent my gear back, he made the modification the next day, and ship them right back to me. It was a very fast turn-around and a very nice job. Thanks Darrel.

RE: CARF F4U-1 Corsair build thread
ORIGINAL: vfrank59
ORIGINAL: luckyb001 ok google ''the house of balsa dust vanessa cg machine'' that is the one I use. Its been dead on so far. Balanced an Mibo A-10, 1/3 Stearman, 40% Waco, 112'' P-51, and several others. Im gonna put up a pick of the harness also. Good luck, let us know what you end up with for weight . Mike
One other item to note. The manual states to ''Center of Gravity: 10-12 mm (1/2) in front of main spar, when looked from the top'' I marked my CG by turning the Fuse upside down and looking at the wing spar from inside the center of the wing. I then marked it 1/2 in in front of this point. Maybe I should have measured it at the wing folding hinge line and and called that point the spar and place my CG mark 1/2 in in front of that point. Instead of near the fuse. Where I conducted my balance check. What do you guys think.. This would probably move my CG measurment point 1/2 in further back at least. Vern
On the top side of the wing center section, there is a panel line exactly above the front edge of the spar. This panel line stays above the front edge of the spar all the way to the wing root. I marked my CG 1/2 inches in front of this panel line.

RE: CARF F4U-1 Corsair build thread
ORIGINAL: vfrank59
ORIGINAL: vfrank59 Well, I checked the valve stroke and it is good. I plugged in a 7.4 lion battery I had laying around and it solved the issue! Yeah! now on to checking CG and firing up the Engine. I will start it tomorrow and maybe get a little video if I can manage it. Thanks for all the help!! Vern
Well, more progress. I balanced the Corsair today and it took 10 1/2 lbs of lead. I will mixed some epoxy and pour it behind the firewall. Plane to fire the engine sometime tomorrow. Pressure is holding fine on the gear, up and down, for about 10 hours each. using 100 psi for the gear. The wing accumulator is now working great. I am using a 7.4 volt battery and 100 psi for the accumulator. The Maiden will take place in 2 weeks if the hot weather will give us a break in Phoenix. [image][/image]
That seems like a lot of nose weight. Mine is a plug-in wing version. I use a 3W 157 engine. I balanced mine with 4.75 lb of lead.

RE: COMP ARF 110
I used a solid wood block 90mm wide, 44mm thick on the right side, 48mm thick on the left side to create a right thrust of 2.5 degree. The center line of this block is 8.4mm to the left of the fuselage centerline. Below are a few pictures of my engine installation. It is a 3W 157 TS. I installed an aluminum plate so the nose weight can be securely attached.

RE: COMP ARF 110
I am in the process of connecting some aluminum pipes to 3W's headers as my exhaust system. As I did not consider using the canister mufflers, I never investigated if there is enough space for that. I doubt there is. Don't buy the mufflers until you have the airplane in your hands.

I already mounted 3W157 Twin Spark with a right thrust of 2.5 degree. No problem, there are enough space between the spark plug caps and the cowl.

RE: COMP ARF 110
On your aileron servo arm, is the pushrod connected to the hole far away from the center or close to the center? I am building this bird right now. As the "control horn" on the ailerons are very short, you should connect your push rod to the hole close to the center of the servo arm.

RE: spark plug color
Again, thank you guys for the comments so far. That's right, I need to provide pictures with better lighting. I hope the following two pictures are more useful. Also, this is how I have adjusted the engine so far: 1. The engine was bought new from Aircraft International two and half years ago. 2. I broke it in with Lawn Boy at 1:32. 3. Then I switched to Amsoil at 1:50. 4. I have leaned the high end needle about 1/8 turn. 5. I have never touched the low end needle. 6. This engine is on a 33 pounds Ziroli P-40. I fly very conservatively. My flights are usually short, about 5 to 10 minutes. Thanks again. Hopefully with the better pictures and a short history about this engine, I can get more help from you guys.
