RE: Extreme Flight Extra 300, 78
i have just purchased this plane from EF and am looking forward to it. i will be installing a saito fg 36 cc gasoline engine, 4 stroke. it will turn an 18 x 8 prop at 8000 rpm. The engine, muffler, ignition, and mount weigh total 60 ounces. is this too much? will this make plane nose heavy, do i need to install rudder servo in tail?? i will also be using a tech aero IBEC. i will also install a fiji tank 500 ml. now, i need your help. which servos are you all using? how many servos do i need?? (1 rudder, 2 elevator, 2 aileron, 1 throttle)? what in/ou servos for rudder/aileron/elevator minimal? are you guys using standard receiver, or are you guys using a power safe vs smartfly vs power box? are you guys installing the rudder servo in tail for push/pull? think those are all the questions i have for now.

RE: Larger Revolver
i have a 27% extra 260 with a da 50 cc engine. the plane weighs total of 15 pounds, and the thrust, using a 23 x 8 prop is 20 pounds. if this new revolver giant is going to weigh 20 pounds or so, then i believe that bird needs a bigger engine than a 50, probably an 70 or 80 cc range, wow, that will be amazing!!!!
ORIGINAL: wjcalhoun Mike Thanks for the details. At 19.5# (and book weights are always optimistically low - she will probably build more like the 20.5) performance will not be 'spirited' with the DLE55. My AW Ext300 weighs in at 17#15oz and is fine, but a plane 2-2.5# heavier; don't know. I have another Extra260 that is 1.5# ligher than the AW bird, and she is noticably more nimble, so another 2# in the other direction with the R90 will likely be an issue. The wing area, control surface area, cubic wing loading, etc will be interesting numbers to get. I was only half joking about the DA-60. Mintor 60 or 75 might be other good options.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
i think that means i have to open LSN up more, so that there is more over all fuel flow, and then decrease the HSN to get it right? i know it is not as easy as it sounds. but it means more tinkering. the problem is that i have a cowl, and i would have to remove it to reset the LSN, but i know the engine will run different with the cowl on as compared to off.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
i totally agree with you. i had engine out of tune big time, hopefully, it will not be damaged from 3 to 4 flights or so that it was running lean. on the last flight, which was just awesome, i had turned the LSN out and the HSN was out by 4 1/2 turns. on the previous flights, the HSN was out only 2 1/2 turns. unknown to me, for this engine, this equals way too lean. on the ground, WOT was not impressive, and it was turning about 8500 rpm, within 1 minute from turning it on. then, once it took off, i noticed the nice smoke (exhaust) trail that was white, and i had missed in last several flights. however, this time, once up in sky, it was slowly, but obviously, beginning to increase rpm. by about 6 minutes of flight, the trail of smoke was less obvious, and the plane was moving, i mean, really moving fast. at least 115 mph. looking forward to next flight to see how she does.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
great news, i have finally tuned my FA 125, and it is now screaming, well, not really, it has incredible power, and it is so quiet. i flew a revolver with , at first a 16 x 6 prop, then i stepped it up to a 15 x 10 prop. extremely fast. well, maybe not extreme, but fast enough for me that it loosened one of my ailerons linkage, = flutter = emergency landing with only one aileron. no damage to plane. i am considering trying the APC 14 x 12 prop.

RE: Larger Revolver
i found this, if you all recall, the revolver i have now is my 2nd one. here are pics of the 1st one on July 8, 2012. note the Garmin, top speed was 113 mph, this was with a 16 x 6 apc prop, saito 1.25 spinning 9000 rpm. today's flight was with same engine, however, it was a apc 15 x 10 prop. don't know actual speed, will let you know tomorrow. if i do fly her, i think full speed throttle control will only be on straight-aways, i will restrain my self from flying full out all the time. i don't know if this bird can handle 120+ mph. i believe that todays flight was much faster than july 8th flight. on july 8, the 1st revolver i had, the plane failed from the rudder servo, whereby the plastic gear snapped. i have fixed that problem by using a JR 8711 servo that has 400 ou/in torque, a volt regulator, life a123 battery and pull pull for rudder.

i attached a picture to the post. i may have exagerated. i do not know the speed, but that was the fastest i have ever flown a plane. so much fun!!, i had a 16 x6 prop. i put in an apc 15 x 10. i still have a 14 x 12 i need to try next, but with these high speeds, it puts a lot of stress on plane and linkage, as you can see. the 1st revolver i had went down on maiden, and that too was the fastest plane i had ever seen, until it crashed. i was lucky today. dont know if i should step up to the 14 x 12

RE: Larger Revolver
i am so lucky. just got back from flying the revolver with the saito 1.25 4 stroke. the engine was tuned best ever, and i was using a 15 x 10 prop. wow oh wow, that engine was roaring and it was flying like a dream. very very fast. by far, the fastest plane i have ever flown. i guess about 150 mph. after 7 minutes of flight, the plane was on north side of field, and all of a sudden, i saw the right wing begin to flutter, i immediately decreased throttle to almost completely off. i thought for sure, in one split second, this bird is going down. its happened to me before, 3 times before. once air speed was decreased, i noted, plane was still erect, so i gave just a tiny throttle and landed plane on runway, perfect landing. on inspection, i noticed the right aileron linkage came undown, and in effect, i was flying at end with only one aileron. ouch!!!! i will upload picture soon. for some reason, i am having a difficult time getting into rc universe. it keeps saying server error.

hi there WJ, i had a 16 x 6 evolution prop, changed it out for an APC 15 X 10, plane flew way better, not really very fast, had no problem landing her. if it is not too windy tomorrow, i iwll try the apc 14 x 12. i iwll keep you posted.
ORIGINAL: wjcalhoun Ortho I hear what you are saying about the prop pitch; i might suggest that you transition to an 8 pitch first (~15x8) before going right to the 10 pitch. Unless your idle is really slow, I think a 10 pitch prop might keep the R70 flying. If your idle is 2100, your theoretical speed is about 19.5 mph - enough to keep her flying. If you can get the idle to 1600 or so, it will probably land with a 10 picth prop. Otherwise, you basically will have to fly her to the ground, and let ground friction slow her down. Try the 8 pitch first, and if it goes well, move on to the 10 pitch.
the foam wing is sheeted with balsa, you cant see foam, only in root of wing.
ORIGINAL: eddieC Sig makes a product, as does Coverite which is called Balsarite. Hello, does anyone know of best way to cover balsa sheeted foam wings? what i mean is, can i paint them, or should i cover them with ultracoat. also, to paint the wing, would anyone treat the balsa 1st with a chemical and then paint, or would this increase weight significantly and just go with covering them. also, if i cover the wings, would you treat balsa 1st? i read where someone used lightweight spackle on balsa, then sanded it down. will this help make ultracoat stick better or look better? also, can i paint on the ultracoat?

i have an fg 36 and i love it. what a engine, and it sounds great! never had issues with it, starts up easliy, and the best part is that the fuel is so cheap and no oil mess. however, beware of cowl anf the engine carb intake. some of the gas engines with rear entry carbs have problems when you do not have adequate air circulation. i did have this problem when the engine was installed in a super decathlon. however, there is a guy, tinkerman tim, on youtube, he has saito fg 21 on a p51 blue nose, and he had to build an air intake specific for this plane/engine commbo, once he did that, engine worked great. great, thanks,, that is what i thought, maybe too lean on LSN. i also noted when plane flew, there was very little smoke trail, usually, with nitro, if it is rich, it will leave a faint smoke trail. great, i will fix it and update you. hopefully i can get back the 9000 rpm
ORIGINAL: Hobbsy The High Speed needle operates in a fixed/unmovable seat, its setting cannot effect the Low Speed needle. The Low Speed can effect the HS needle if you get the LS needle too lean, When the LS needle is too lean you won't be able to richen the HS needle because too much of the, "cats eye" is covered by the LS sleeve. RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
hello, i need some help. i need to explain in length what has happened. please do not hesitate to ask questions if i confuse you. i purchased a brand new saito fa 125 from horizon hobby 2 months ago. i installed the engine into a revolver 70. i did do the break in procedure described on this forum with 10 minutes at 2000 rpm, then 10 minutes at 3000 rpm, etc..., using my tach. on the first flight, this plane flew real real fast. i was using a 16 x 6 prop. this plane had so much power, after 6 minutes on the maiden flight, the plane, all of a sudden lost control, and it crashed. the rudder servo had plastic gears, and the plastic from top gear snapped at junction with servo horn. the plane was totalled and engine suffered a bent crankshaft. However, this was not discovered at first. allow me to digress. i bought the same airplane, again, gP revolver 70, and redid everything, but this time better. Life A123 battery pack, JR 8711 servo for rudder with pull pull, voltage regulator, all MG servos for other surfaces. two servos for elevators also. right after completing installation, i also reinstalled the saito FA 125, there was, at the time, no obvious damage to carb, cylinder head, pushrod tubes, etc... however, after i installed the spinner and the prop, i turned the prop and noticed that it was not spinning true, and at this point, i diagnosed the bent crankshaft. now, i had to remove the engine from the brand new plane. to remove the engine, i decided i would remove the carburator throttle lever, since the pushrod was attached to it, and this in turn was attached to servo in board. I did not want to take so much appart, so i decided to remove the lever. in doing so, i inadvertently began to turn the visible "screw", until i then realized, hey, wait a minute, this is the low speed needle, ouch, i then found the hex head screw which then removed the lever. but now, i had removed the setting of the low speed needle. so now, back to my dilemma. since engine has been reassembled, i have flown plane about 10 times, however, it does not have anywhere near the same power and speed as it once had. i am turning a 16 x 6 prop at 7500 rpm. today, i flew plane twice. after first flight, i decided to play with HSN, and i leaned it just slightly, using tach, i saw it was now turning 8200 rpm, i was excited. the moment bird went up in air, i knew something was wrong. plane was way underpowered, and within 7 minutes (once it overheated), the plane would stall if engine was at WOT, so i brought throttle to 1/5 power, and it stayed on enough to let me land the plane. so i am asking all the saito brains, the ones with the most experience, what do you believe is the problem? do you think i need to open the LSN some more, and hope to get the 9000 rpm back? or do you think something else is wrong. i am using 15% nitro fuel and it is brand new, just opened the bottle today. i have also checked the valve clearance, and all fo the pushrods are fine, they are not bent. also, the engine starts up immediately.
