RE: Why not transport your fully assembled aircraft to the field?
Before I got a trailer in 2006, I used to do this all the time and never had a problem. I built a custom PVC cradle that held 3 planes in a staggered mount. I have an F-150 and the cradle was strapped into the bed very well. The planes road just fine even at highway speeds. They were all strapped in using long velcro strips. The trick was the planes road under the cabs slipstream and didn't experience any destructive effects on the planes. I did have a canopy fly off one time but no big deal. All my planes at the time were 40 - 60 size so the wings did not stick out past the side of the truck bed except my 60 size which rode on top. I did this for 3 years and never had a problem despite the 15 mile highway ride to our field. Heck, Our club ended up with several new members and lots of new spectators because people would stop me and ask me at the convenience store on the way out. They always asked where I was going. I'd hand them a flyer and invite them out to the field. It was fantastic advertising for our club. Kids would always shout at their parents to get closer so they could see the planes. All in all, it was a really positive thing. The only problem was I was only able to transport three planes. As my fleet grew, I need a trailer to transport them. If it works for you, then wonderful

RE: Today's gas no problem... NO way...
I've solved the problem by simply getting premium non-ethanol gas. There is only ONE place in town that sells it. Sure, It's 50 cents a gallon more but @ $4.50 a gallon, it's still a helleva lot cheaper than 30% nitro glow @ $30.00 a gallon. You can find a station near you @: http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp Many marinas sell non-ethanol gas since the stuff kills boat motors. I put the gas in my truck and I get 3-4 gallons more per mile too. Sure, It costs me $10.00 more a fill up but it'll save me in the long run since I won't be having to change fuel lines, hoses, fuel injectors, etc later on. My truck doesn't ping and knock either like it does on ethanol cr@p. Personally, I believe ethanol gas is the biggest scam ever perpetrated on Americans in present day America. But I digress.... I buy the stuff for all my lawn equipment and planes.I cannot tell you how much better both of those things run better with NON ETHANOL!

A brownout is when your $3K plane is 200' up and you lose your radio.. The result being a complete brownout of your underwear!

RE: My flying buddy is now a Marine
It's people like your buddy that has allowed us the freedom fly... I served in the Coast Guard. At the time I didn't think I was doing anything particularly special. It all came to light one day when I saved a woman life. Her children and husband thanked me. It was because of my actions that a family had their mom. Your buddy will save someones life whether it's a child, woman, buddy... Thank him.

RE: How to clean burned up Castor Oil off an engine.....please help.
ORIGINAL: blw Using low heat on a crock pot and antifreeze is an excellent way to clean engines. Just do it outside for 10-12 hours. I reuse the antifreeze a couple of times before throwing it out. Plain glow fuel works wonders on the internals after the engine has sat a while.
I AGREE WHOLEHEARTLY! This is what I've been doing for years. Soak all your non plastic parts in hot (NOT BOILING) antifreeze and your engine, no matter how backed, will come out looking factory new. THe other advantage to this methos is the antifreeze WILL NOT remove any of the silver anodizing. Many caustic cleaners will de-anodize your engines. I know from experience. I usually soak my engines for 10-20 hours. Just depends how baked and caked they are. You will be amazed at how new these motors look after a 15 hour soak. For carbonized internals, I'll take a wire dremel brush to them. For example, on my Saito engines I'll lap the valves with 1500 grit wet sand soaked in transmission fluid. Also, this works with the piston too! I typically use 2000 grit w/ trans fluid on it.

RE: What would a gas engine be compared to a glow
The Cobra was designed by Dan Santich. His son, Steve Santich is a regular flyer at our club and good friend of mine. I've had the pleasure of seeing many of his old planes at Steve's home. Dan was the man when it came to RC design. A few years back I nearly took on the task of building the cobra - BUT- life happens... Good luck with the build and I ask that you post a build of it. I'm sure Steve would love to see one of his late dad's planes come to life again!

At our club, we do not have one single, "Minority".... we simply have pilots. We also DO NOT have politically correct members either! The term "minority" has no place at our field... We leave that to the politicians and the weak minded.

RE: You laugh you lose !!!
A funny story about the horse in that photo... My father-in-law, the one in the photo, called the vet to come out because the horse had severe colic. The vet arrived a couple hours later and she rolled up in a huge F-350. When vet got out she was all of 5'1". She said she had to "un-impact" the horse MANUALLY (you couldn't pay me enough). So, she proceeded to put on the arm length glove and pulled up a step stool. She firmly planted the stool and climbed of to the target area. She began by inserting her arm up to mid forearm and then nearly up to her shoulder. After a minute of feeling around she began pulling ... So there was me, my wife, and my father-in-law, all holding the horse down. When the female vet began pulling out the poop the horse got a little jumpy. The vet exclaimed, "He's telling me he doesn't like this very much". I replied to her, "No! He's telling you how about a dinner and movie first". My father-in-law busted out laughing and my wife just hung her head said shut up! But she did giggle a little... After a few minutes of pulling out poop, the horse kicked out the stool and the vet was left hanging from the horses end with her arm (up to the shoulder) in the horses rear. I looked at her and then my wife looked at me... She said, "NOT ONE WORD Mr. Funny Pants"! I replied, trying to contain my laughter, "Where was she when Richard Gere needed her? Then the vet started laughing uncontrollably. The horse however did not seem to see the humor in it at all. So of course, my father-in-law always inquires to my wife, "How's Mr Romantic funny man" doing?

RE: Sig Four Star 120 Engine Choosing
Without a doubt, the Saito 150 is the IDEAL engine for this plane. We (me included) have 6 of these at our club. Everyone started out with different enginines but ultimately, all ended up putting Saito 150's in it. The 150 offers the PERFECT power to weight combination. also, the weight of the Saito is perfect for CG balance.

Do not make the mistake of assumeing wht worked for your parrents will work for you. Kev.
And of course, That's what I said when I was in my teens. The reality is, every generation is the somewhat the same - making the same mistakes over and over again. THe old guys have been around long enough to the young ones making the same mistakes they did. The older guys aren't different at all - they've already been through it all. The younger ones think they know everything but fantasy and reality are two VERY different things.

RE: makes me angry again!!!!
Buddy, I can sympathize with you. When i was a teenager I was in exactly the same boat as you are. At your age - everything is cool and money is no object. But then you get older and reality sets in... Mortgage, utilities, food, taxes, ect etc. If you have a nickel left over your doing better that 50% of the folks out there. Of course, you have to deal with the fact that what was cool when you 16 - is no longer cool now. So, with that being said... Enjoy life now!!!!!!! Your folks are footing the bill for pretty much everything so splurge every dime you can get your fingers on - on RC. Because as soon as you hit your 20's your hormones dictate you will spend every dime you have on women... In search of the "prize". Right now you have to deal with your dad but that's the price you have to pay. My suggestion to you is find out what motivates your dad and use that for leverage. It's spring coming into summer. Get your rear end outside and speak to every neighbor you have and ask them if you can mow their yard. In the 80's, I spent 8 months out of the year mowing yards... I made enough in one summer to buy my own car and 2 surf boards... It's cash money the IRS will never see it. You will e able to easily make 300.00 per week if you bust @zz. Here's the catch though... Once it becomes your hard earned money - you may think a little differently about how you spend it. Like I said kid. Enjoy and relish every moment of your teens because once you're past those years - life becomes real. Enjoy kid!

RE: A Few Joe Nall 2011 Pics for you
I didn't take as many photos as I wanted to because I was enjoying the flying waaaaay to much to snap pics. I've shot thousands of pics in years past @ Nall so this year I decide I'd kick back and enjoy the day - not worry about getting the perfect shot. I did have the perfect seat though. Center left front under a great shape tree. Temps were in afternoon were upper 80's with plenty of susnshine, no wind, and 90% humidity... You were either under a shade tree or miserable! Pics were shot with a Canon XTI & Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS USM. I did manage to get some great footage of Mac Hodges flying his B-29. I'll post it on youtube tonight and post the link here.

The older I get, the more I realize that elections should be held by lottery. Think about it - The average Joe off the street couldn't do any worse than what we have running the show in our government now. Plus, we wouldn't have to worry about all the foreign money, illegals voting, and unions paying off politicians... Just my 2 cents.

RE: How much is the Executive Director paid?
GerKonig, As I posted earlier - this is pretty much a class/pay envy situation where you have a handful of characters upset because someone is making more than them. It's quite unfortunate that these miscreants can't be drop-shipped to a communist run country (that they glorify through their envy). Funny thing is, these are the same folks that would cry fowl if someone making less than they were criticized them for what they had. If you are upset that you make a certain amount of money, then get more education and a new job. I wasn't happy with my last job so I went out and got and EARNED a few more IT certs... THen pounded the pavement for 6 months until I got a higher paying job. The green-eyed monster lives in those who are not willing to do for themselves.

RE: How much is the Executive Director paid?
ORIGINAL: combatpigg The AMA ED is a GOB network job, always has been, always will be. The executive director of a sod farm is in charge of a billion blades of grass, which most likely takes more expertize to manage than the AMA on a day to day basis. RE: How much is the Executive Director paid?
Seems to me that the ED is under payed for what we receive in return. I'm not sure if everyone understands what AMA is doing for us. AMA is protecting the hobby from an ever intrusive government that doing everything in it's power to limit our freedoms when it comes to our hobby. I'm sure most of you have discovered that this year alone the Fed wants to lump the hobby in with commercial UAV rules. These new regs would devastate our hobby. While I do not have a complete understanding of EVERYTHING AMA does for us, I do know that without them, there would be far fewer RC clubs and the restrictions put on us would cripple our hobby. 125K is nearly NOTHING for what the ED provides. I'm aware that the ED spends countless hours working for us - unlike the politicians we pay handsomely for screwing us over every opportunity they get. If you don't like the salary the ED makes, I encourage you to drop AMA and fly by yourself far outside the city limits. It is quite disturbing to me that there is so much "pay envy" out there. This class envy works well for politicians who need the poor and downtrodden to perpetuate their gilded positions. I assure you that the AMA ED is providing our hobby with the service and protection from government it deserves. Just because you don't "see it", trust me, it's being done. “The jealous are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves
