RE: Rotor head ideas
Hi Harvey, There usually is no need to include flapping hinges in a coaxial system. You do not want flapping here. The blades should be built lightly, so they do not cause unwanted buildup of forces which could shatter them. The Super Libelle coaxial gyro had lead-lag hinges, but no flappers. Many users of this system don't have any hinging whatsoever, simply rigid rotors. I still might go this route, as it is simple and effective. I could fly a wingless gyro with rudder, elevator, and throttle. Thanx !!! Charlie

OK, Thanx for the straight scoop !!! I also had the MB plan for the Synchrogyro, but I think loaned them 15 years ago and never got them back......I still remember a lot about the design.....how unique it was.......2-channel !!! WOW !!! Charlie Anderson

Hi Andy, I spoke with you on the RCU AutoGyro Forum a while back. Did you ever receive the plans for the Synchrogyro ?? I was wondering if you have built and flown one yet. Please send any specifications/pix of this design, as I can't seem to find a picture of it anywhere. Thanx for your help !!! Charlie Anderson ottogiro58@aol.com

Can the PT Gyros Be Steered With Rudder Only ??
Hi Gang, Are there any PT Gyro scientist/pilots (all PT models) who would like to try a simple experiment ?? Adjust your radio gear so the rudder and elevator (rotor pitch) are on the same stick, and see if it can be flown as a 3-channel trainer airplane would be handled..... Some up-elevator might be needed while turning.....You could still leave the roll control on the left stick with the throttle, in case you need to bail out and recover using roll........ Who knows, a 3-channel autogyro might make the ideal training aircraft !!! C'mon guys, this is an easy experiment and could lead to simplification of this design. Less cost, less weight, less construction. Thanx !!! Charlie Anderson [8D]

RE: Who Has A Synchrogyro ???
Hi Andy, Yep, it dates from 1978, I believe. What worked back then, will work better now. Single-rotor updated version is warranted. It was claimed that the lightweight model would gently float down w/power off. I like that !!! Charlie Anderson

Who Has A Synchrogyro ???
Hi Gang, Does anyone out there know of a currently flying Synchrogyro 2-channel gas-powered autogyro model ?? Please share all of your Synchrogyro experiences/pix/videos with us. I was wondering if this design would work with one of the modern flex plate rotor heads (designed for a model of similar weight). Elevator control could be easily added if needed (extra arm located on rudder servo arm w/pushrod can be used to activate the elevator, giving "up" input while turning). Thanx !!! Charlie Anderson

1/2A PT Gyro Information
Hi Gang, Does anyone have a 1/2A PT Gyro, and do you still fly it ?? I need some basic specs like rotor diameter, blade size and weight, flex plate thickness (polypropylene ? ), all-up flying weight, motor/prop combos, modifications, etc. I was thinking about scratch-building a .074 powered 1/2 A gyro. Thunder Tiger .074 power. Thanx for your help !!! Charlie Anderson PS Any videos of it would be great !!!

Hi Mike, OK, I get the throttle setup and operation now...........thanks for the detailed information. By the way, I saw your older posts concerning electric carrier C/L ...........a throttle controlled electric might do the trick for me !!! Are any of the electric throttles now located in the handle, with a trigger or similar ?? Or are the signals now being sent down the line ?? IR controls ?? It would be great to have all controls located in the ukie handle. Please clue me in on the latest electric technology when you get a chance......Thanx, Charlie

RE: 1/2A Throttle Controlled C/L Autogyro
OK, sounds great, Mike..........thanx for the info. If Cox had continued producing the TD, I might still be using it !!! I also flew an "Otto", with OS FSR .10 ........way too much motor without a throttle control !!! I even have a VCR video of one of my Otto clones wobbling around, crashes included. Gyro success depends on careful rotor design. The 2-bladed Bensen-style teeter head is simple to construct, and provides the necessary stability. My Otto flew, but was prone to shaking, dipping, diving, and rolling............that pesky FSR had a mind of its own........... my most successful gyro was based on Roy L. Clough's July 1962 Popular Mechanix design. I tamed the TD .051 using a one-way check valve to control flooding, along with a stunt-vented film cannister fuel tank. Profile design was easy to modify. Looking forward to more pix/info.....Thanx !!! Charlie Anderson

RE: Direct drive electric prerotator for Autogyros
Hi Jim, I am referring to a direct drive system, where the outrunner/other electric motor is the rotor bearing and prerotator all in one . The idea is to simplify construction, and eliminate any clutch or gear mechanism.....Charlie Anderson

1/2A Throttle Controlled C/L Autogyro
Hi Gang, Does anyone fly a control-line 1/2A (.074 Thunder Tiger or similar) airplane with 3-line throttle control ?? I have a new TT .074 laying around, and want to build an autogyro with throttle. I have flown Cox .049 gyros successfully for many years, but always wanted a throttle so I could "hang on the prop" and fly slowly, like the carrier guys. Guess I need a special ukie handle. Gyrocopters have their own charms, and challenges, too !!! I'm looking to adapt any successful .074 throttled design...... gyros are a bit "draggy" and need just a bit more power than the Cox could produce. Will the 3-line system work well with a slow, lightweight model ?? Any input, plans or help would be appreciated.....Thanx !!! Charlie Anderson

RE: Rotor head ideas
Hi John, Twin contra-rotating coaxial rotors do not need teetering for stability. Stability is acheived through contra-rotation. Build twin rotors with preset coning angles, use reasonable vertical fin and rudder, and it should turn easily with rudder-only steering. Keep the rotors light for EZ spinup and to prevent unwanted forces building up in the sys tem. Be sure that thrust line goes through or near vertical CG. Look on You Tube under Contratwirl for a video of a twin 4-bladed coaxial rotor autogyro. Flys great on 3-channel (rudder, elevator, throttle). Hope this info helps. Charlie

4 Bladed Teeter Head
Hi Gang, Any thoughts or evidence of a four blade teeter head being used ?? Picture a gyro with a Bensen teeter head, as if the two blades were in line with the fuselage. But instead of two blades inline, four blades are installed like an "X" atop the fuselage (considering a special mount would have to be made). Teeter hinge line would bisect blade chord lines. Has anyone experimented with this design head ?? Any thoughts on its feasibility ?? More blade area, and might ? result in a smoother operating head. Thanx for your input. Charlie Anderson

RE: Twin rotor Gyro idea
Hello, I believe something similar to this arrangement has been tried by billf (Dr. Bill Friedlander) and can be seen on a video posted on this forum (and You Tube) previously. I think it was You Tube-Spring Hill 2007 Part 4. It did fly, but I am not sure if any further development was accomplished. Might be a heavy servo load to deal with, unless a type of offset gimbal mount is used. Charlie A.
