RE: Saito FG-30 gas troubles
I bought my FG30 last year and installed it in my H9 J-3 Cub 1/4 scale. Haven't gotten around to starting it yet and now I'm really scared to with all I've been reading from unhappy pilots from all over. Obviously it is not an isolated problem to 1 or a few engines. I love the looks of my plane and I'd hate to wreck it over an overpriced, under-tested, unreliable engine. I was mainly relying on the good name of Saito and their reputation when I bought the engine, now I'm a bit worried that I, too, made a mistake. It was expensive enough to buy the engine, now we have to invest more $$ in a better ignition pack?? Pisser! [:@][:@]

My plane looks good and flies great. But they used the cheapest covering found on the planet to use...still very dissatisfied with it. You can see the wood grain thru the covering and if you try to remove it , it will make a mess. Has prevented me from buying a second or third plane from them. I would, however, reconsider if they sold an ARC option for all their models...but they don't. Oh well. [8|]

I agree...it would take a large gas radial ($$$$$!!!!!) to pull that around. A plane of that size deserves a radial, not a twin or a single. How about a 100 inch or 110 inch model?

RE: Piper Pawnee scratch build? #$@!
Pros of glow: Plenty of power Good power to weight ratio No magneto wheel or ignition module Cons of glow: Fuel very expensive Messy oil from exhaust to clean off Carb needs frequent adjustments Pros of gas: Gas is cheaper to operate Low maintenance More reliable Cons of gas: Magneto engines heavier Another battery to charge for elect. ignition models Another thing to consider is if you want a 2 or 4 stroke engine in gas or glow. For your model I would probably go with a 4 stroke in either gas or glow. You can go 4 stroke gas from Saito but beware...saito's 4 stroke gas engines are in the experimental stage right now and many users are complaining about over temperamental carbs...generally hard to dial in. Plus there are no carb repair kits for them at this time, so buy and operate at your own risk. You might want to also consider a Zenoah G20ie whish is gas, lightweight and reliable 2 stroke.

RE: Piper Pawnee scratch build? #$@!
ORIGINAL: Cook2Fly Hey Outa How is it in MD is it as hot as it is here... The wingspan is 73 inches I have no idea dry weight. The plans say a .52 FS so who knows I need to start looking for an engine.. What do you recommend 2 or 4 stroke? And as you can see the cowl is now made of wood so I might make one out of fiberglass or just leave it wood.. It looks like this thing has a lot of wing is that normal for this type of plane, with the fuselage so short..? Oh the hatch is my little modification too.. today will be cap strips on the ribs and gluing the wing halves together. ''I love the smell of CA in the morning'' or is that Napalm??? Steve Hey Outa,, I have one or two more questions.. I am gluing the wing halves together and the dihedral looks huge is there supposed to be so much? My plans are crappy and the only thing that has an angle of what looks to be dihedral is this little wood brace which I assume attaches to the inside of the two main spars. the angle looks way too much. Do you have any idea of the angle in degrees? and By the way I have been reading the H9 pawnee thread and it proves to be very interesting!!! By the way I am making the struts now and looking for hardware.. to attach to the wing and fuselage. Thanks again Steve...
Steve, so sorry I didn't respond 'till now as I didn't get an email from rcuniverse alerting me you wrote this. I finally got one when Gliderboy wrote in. Anyway, August is gone now and it's almost Thanksgiving and I'm still thrilled you have a piper Pawnee I presume you're still working on. First off, I would recommend a four stroke for the low range power and the wonderful sound they produce. I would also recommend if you can afford it...a four stroke gas engine. Something like the Saito FG 17 would well with a 73'' airframe. http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/fg-17-100-4-stroke-gas-engine-bm-SAIEG17 To answer you other questions: yes, the wing IS that big and this type of ag plane has lots of dihedral built in for stability when the chemical gets sloshing around in the tank. I don't have the degree of angle but with some research on the net you could eventually find out if you haven't already. I am probably of little help unless I see the project in front of me to see what you're working with. If you still need to know the amount of dihedral let me know and I'll try to find out. Where are you, exactly, on the journey of this project...already flying? Let us know.

Which oil to use for my Saito FG series engine
Just bought a Saito FG 30 gas four stroke for my H9 1/4 scale J-3 Cub. The engine is version 2009. On page 18 of the owner's manual it states that you should mix a ratio of 20:1 for break in and continuous operation. It also says to mix a high-quality 91 octane unleaded gasoline and a reliable high-quality 100% synthetic oil for 2 cycle engines. They recommend Evolution Oil. Problem is....I've never heard of that stuff and don't know where to get it. However, I was at Lowes today and picked up a bottle of pro-mix premium 2 cycle engine oil 'designed for use with 50:1, 40:1, 32:1, and 16:1 mix ratios. It advertises on the bottle that it's low smoke, fuel stabilizer and synthetic blend. You add 2.6 oz. Per gallon to cover any of these required ratios for your engine. This is very new to me. I'm used to mixing my own ratio according to the amount of oil per gallon. Could someone please shed some light on this for me and let me know if this is safe for my FG 30? Otherwise...what brand oil (100% synthetic) have you been using for your FG engine and where did you get it from? Thanks.
ORIGINAL: psgugrad FUJI IMVAC failed in mainstream RC applications because no one bought their engines...because there was no reason to buy one. I really feel the same way about Zenoah. Zenoah is superior to FUJI IMVAC...they are reliable and fairly powerful...but there's no reason to buy one. The better Chinese engines (most specifically DLE).......
The BETTER Chinese engines?.....[:-] [X(] surely you jest! When those cheap Chinese engines prove they can last as long as any Zenoah then we'll take your post more seriously. The cheap Chines engines that you claim are so superior are unproven and have a lot of problems. The DLE is the only one it seems that's worth paying for at this point ( I own a couple ). this post is opinion based and I disagree with poster. Each engine fills a niche in the RC market so what's the point of this post? Fugi failed because they had reliability issues and expensive replacement parts. Zenoah has no such problem....I predict it will stay.
