RE: Tail Slide
Years ago JC actually tested this by mounting a P80 on a board, strapping it to the top of a minivan pointed backwards (the engine that is;)) and driving down the road. It worked just fine so, have at it! Dave

RE: Ideas for illiminating tip stall, or undersireable wing drop upon stall.
Or other thing to check is rudder trim. Airplanes will drop to the deflected rudder at stall (assuming everything else is straight). Even a very minor deflection (undetectable to the naked eye) will cause a roll off to that side. Just for grins put in a touch of left rudder trim and see which way she breaks. A lot easier than cutting up your wing etc Dave

RE: Jet flying near Springfield Mass?
Guys, Sorry to post this one again. A gentlemen contacted me when I placed this before, and now I can't seem to find the contact info. Please hit me again. I'll be out there next weekend and would love to swing by. Proline, My geography in that area of the country is poor at best. As I Mapquest it, it looks like everything mentioned is 90 min from the Springfield area...is that correct? Thanks Dave

Dantley, Slowly on the F-4. Real life sucks! We should all stage a big 'sick year' all around the country and just travel, build, and fly! Who's in? What tail number is your new scheme Dantley? I've got a full scale arctic scheme with my name now if you need a good tail number. We lost my blue one in an accident last year. Ian, phenomenal points....I always thought that smoke was made of money. Congrats on the baby, kiss the shop time goodbye. I'm currently hiding in Starbucks while the 13 yr old has the baby and momma's sleeping. By 7 weeks they really should be able to sleep 10-12 hours straight right? Dave

RE: BVM F-16
I was thinking the 100 would have to be turned down a bit. I've got the BV conversion kit, but can't remember how much fuel that is...I was hoping it would be enough for a turned down 100. I can't see using much more than a P-60 except for T/O, go arounds and hi-alpha flying. Anyone have any ideas here? I guess part of me doesn't want to buy an old motor that is pretty small when I could buy the newest/latest/greatest for just a bit more money, and very little excess weight (maybe even up weight-wise when you consider all the valves, etc) that would provide me options for bigger airframes in the future. Fw, Yup, You can slow roll. Max roll rate is limited to 188 or 344 degrees per second (depending on what category loading you select), but will slow way down once you know it Dave

RE: BAE Hawk vs F-16 (fun poll)
Falconwings, Sorry, the F-16 needs top rudder to hold KE as well. The computer's good, but not that good:) A lot of folks think the computer will vote your rudder inputs out in an F-16, not true unless you're at high alpha, the rudder pedals operate normally (except they are on one bar with a pivot point in the middle vice two pedals that move linerally fore and aft...that took a bit to get used to). Andy, Sam is spot on about the upgrades to the gear. If you end up grabbing that tank from me and want to get the gear stuff done, just have BVM send the parts to my place and I'll throw everything in one box for the trans-pacific haul Dave PS-I'll get that volume to you this weekend Sam, What turbine did you have in there? I've got one built and flying electric and another half done for turbine. I know lots of guys have done the P-60, but I think I'd like some more oomf. Think we could cram a P-100 in?

RE: Wanted, nose pin
Pete, I had the same pin bend rather than break on mine. What I did was to buy some 6mm drill stock at a local supplier. I then cut it and milled a groove for the e-clip with a dremel and a cut-off wheel. Problem solved! That was a cheap and easy solution Dave

RE: Ultra Flash CG
I don't know where mine is right now, but I can tell you it's probably 240-45. I started at 225 and have been adding tail weight since. The 225 is a fine place to start, but I bet you move aft from there. I can actually land and aero brake now with the CG back I hope this helps! Dave

RE: Running a turbine at full power non stop? Damaging?
Ess, I think you're right if you run the pump at max allowable voltage (4.5V for the P140). If, however, you check to see the max voltage with the engine running (I think it was 3.8/9 instead of the 4.5 allowable) and then replicate it, you're close enough for what I think he's looking for (Flight time, leaks in the system, collapsing UATs, etc)). I've done this with my 140RX and it seemed to work pretty darn well. I've since done it with my 120SX and had similar good results. Additionally, I'm pretty sure the valve is a simple binary valve...open or closed. The fuel pump actually 'meters' the fuel to the turbine through increased/decreased voltage. You can see this if you run the engine and correlate throttle position, turbine RPM and pump voltage. Dave

RE: Running a turbine at full power non stop? Damaging?
Pete, Here's the pic. Obviously the turbine isn't running so the screen shows 0.0V for the pump just right of center on the top row. This is the run screen so if the motor is running you'd see the pump voltage adjusting to control RPM/temp.

RE: Running a turbine at full power non stop? Damaging?
Pete, it's right on the main run screen of the GSU. I can't remember exactly what it says since its not in front of me, but it'll be about 3-4v depending on the turbine. I can look when I get home if you like

RE: Running a turbine at full power non stop? Damaging?
Pepperpete, After chasing fuel system issues in a jet, I found a good solution and now I use it as a preflight check before a first flight I run th engine at full throttle and figure out max pump voltage. I then set up a 4mm tube out of the ball valve festo back Into my filler jug. Under the test menu you can select a pump voltage the same, or even a touch higher than what your previously tested value was, put a clamp on the change value button on the GSU and run the timer This also allows you to tilt the plane around and see if you have feed or vent problems without upsetting the neighbors! Ladies/Gents, So sorry I couldn't be with you all this week. I had the time off work, I had a jet driven out there, I had a plane ticket, and then: Charlotte "Charlie" June Evans, a mere three weeks early! 5 July 12 Charlotte so she has an old world Southern name "Charlie" because all Fighter Pilots' daughters need a call-sign, and my wife has seen Top Gun too many times:) June for June Carter Cash. Johnny and June (Heidi Newfield) was our wedding song. Have fun guys, fly safe...I'll be changing poopy diapers and assembling 'pumps' if you need me!

RE: Skymaster Hinges
Bill, I had similar probs on my 2m VJ. 2/3 hinges snapped, one during installation (with glue drying of course) and the second during radio setup. My recommendation: cut the hinges from the side with a Dremel (just to separate the rudder), and then use a soldering iron to melt the hinges out (I used sharpened brass tubing that just fit around the hinges and drilled them out, but that was a pain), and reinstall with Robarts (they are much more resilient and 'tight'). RE: Skymaster G2 F16 arrives
Seans 4 view is good but not quite correct. The white on the spine is almost symmetric and extends further aft. when you're flying next to this jet that white symmetric pattern really stands out. We went through a LOT of work to get that scheme approved and the 'Love Boat' as we call 269 is the only one painted in it so far. Also of note Nellis now has two of the Arctic scheme Viper Aggressors as well. Cool as hell, but weird against the desert?..good thing there's snow up range most of the winter:) Dave
