RE: FW190
Tom, Vailly aviation does not have plans for the D9, only the A5. Meister Scale has drawings for the D9, be aware that it has a flat bottom wing. This makes them easier to fly. This Dora has a 102" wing span. http://www.meister-scale.com/ If this doesn't suit you, Top Flite makes a D9 kit that I have seen scaled out and looks great. It is smaller, not sure what size you are looking for. The difference between the A series and the D series is that they uses different engines that enabled the Germans to slim and lengthen the front end of the plane.

Doc Xray, Would you be interested in selling the Ziroli plans, canopy, and cowl? If that is, you decide to build the Meister? Let me know. I live in Pickerington, so it wouldn't be a hassle getting it from you. -Just a thought. Thanks, Nick

yep4, I might be able to upload a few pics for you. I have not changed my scheme. I just wanted something to toy around with while building his much bigger brothers. I picked it up from a guy with engine and all for $200.00 I just like to collect jugs of all sizes. I would also like to see what you have mikejdad. I might change my scheme later if I get bored.

racer-rcu hit dead on. That was the page I was talking about. If I get a chance, I post some pics soon. Richard, if I was you, since it is a Top Flite giant. I would use small brass piano hinges for the doors. If it was a smaller Top Flite, I would use the hinges racer-rcu is using on the door in the pic. I plan on using these hinges he is using in other areas. They are real handy. I like the Molded doors you made too. Nick

RE: P-47 tail wheel doors
Richard, The hinges I will be using are small piano hinges. This will look very scale and functuional. As you know, the doors were closed by two "door actuating arms" between the tail wheel frame and the doors, which in turn pulled the doors shut when retracted. This info is clearly seen on pg 66 in Walk Around P-47 Thunderbolt No. 11 (Squadron Signal Publications) Not sure about you, but if I find that their isn't enough air to pull them up, then I will beef up the pneumatic portion of the retract. Let me know if this helps. I have tons of documentation on the jug. This would seem befitting of me to do so since I'm building two of them. Nick

NEO, Absolutely amazing. Aren't you sick of hearing it? You shouldn't be. Anyway, I have gotten a chance to take a good look at your website and all the detail you are creating in the SBD. Amazing. You are doing what I set out to do a long time ago. I have been really scared to weather any planes I have. I will do this on subsequent machines I build. The info you provide is great. I cannot wait to see this up-close. Thank you for the knowledge you are putting out there and for not keeping it from people with the same passion as you. Nick

RE: Dreaming about a "Razor Back" P-47...
Please take my advice; just buy a kit from Laser Lizard. Check his site for prices: Laserlizard.com I really messed up my P-47 kit when cutting it out myself. I copied the plans, and the copier varied big time, and my mistake, did not compare the parts like I should have. Now I have a big mess to clean up. It is doable, but would have been better off to just have one cut for me. Even if I did compare the parts, I would have wasted more time and money than if I would have simply had Jesse cut one for me. Never again. He cut two kits for me: a Vailly FW-190, and another Ziroli P-47 (92") The parts are not even comparable. The quality is so much better than mine. Maybe I am not cut out to cut my own kits. I don't have that kind of patience. To me, it is boring, and a waste of time. To others, that is their thing. But, that's them. Sorry, don't mean to offend anyone. [:D] Sorry to ramble, go with the Ziroli, they build great. Just my opinion. Nick

RE: Best flying P47?
Tom, I am building two Ziroli Jugs (slowly). I really like the way both of them have built. I am also building a Vailly FW-190. I love Vailly's plans. The readability is excellent. So.... I would assume his Jug plans would be the same. I hear that Vailly's wing for the Jug is more scale than the Ziroli. I have even heard that some guys strap a Vailly Jug wing to a Ziroli Jug fuselage. I guess it is like the old Ford/Chevy war that has been going on for a while. I personally beleive that the Ziroli outline is scale, therefore I like the Ziroli. Some like others. I do not think you can go wrong with a Ziroli, or Vailly. If you want a sport/scale Jug, then build the Meister. I have flown a Ziroli Jug before and fell in love with it. I wasn't hard to fly. I just really liked the idea how scale it was. Nick

RE: YOU CAN KISS A WARBIRDS ONLY SHOW GOOD-BYE@ DAYTON
I live an hour from Dayton. I always went to see the War bird only. And, I was there this year and saw the annoying hovering airplanes. Never again will I waste my time. I cannot believe that W.P.A.F.B is not allowing a War bird only event. I do not see any 3D planes in their hangers- mostly war birds. If there are any, I just ignored them. I would definitely drive to Michigan for a War bird only event. Although I did say I would never step foot on Michigan soil due to the football team in E.Lansing. [:D] In all seriousness, I would definitely show for an event like this. -Nick

RE: Vaillancourt vs. Ziroli P47 Thunderbolt
Dorin, to be quite honest, before I started on my 47's, I was told by many people that the outline is dead on. I took this advise from the pro's and never took the time to compare. Some three-views I have found were incorrect. I got this advise back when Ziroli had his own forum running on his website. To me just looking at the Ziroli jug, everything looks like it is in place. I did take an accurate plastic model and drew in my own panel lines, hinge points, etc... I heard Bob Banka has very accurate 3-views. This is where Ziroli gets his documentation from to start his aircraft. Bob's site: http://www.bobsairdoc.com/ If you have any other questions just let me know. Nick

RE: Vaillancourt vs. Ziroli P47 Thunderbolt
If you go with the Ziroli, use the Vailly P-47 retracts. (Sierra Precision) These retracts are scale and use the shrink bar like the real ones. I am building two Ziroli Jugs. I have not looked at the Vailly Jug but, I am building the Vailly FW-190. If the P-47 is anything like the quality of the FW, then give Vailly a try. I have found that Vailly's plans are more clear in reading them. If you must be critical. Both designers are top notch. Let me know if you have any questions. Nick

RE: Need help choosing FW190 and Spitfire kits.
I am building the Vailly FW190 right now. It falls together nicely. Anyway, I have seen the Sierra retracts up close at the Dayton show, and they are just as Tempest says: THEY ARE GORGEOUS! (All of his retracts are, but that's another thread) From a building standpoint, the Vailly FW 190 is excellent. I love his blue prints. Everything is explained in detail. They are actually easier to read than Ziroli plans. No clutter on his plans. This is my first Vailly plane. Out of the countless planes I've built, Vailly is top-notch. I will be building his 113" FW 190 when it comes out next year. Take a look at Joe Huntleys site. He is building three of them. http://home.mchsi.com/~jahuntley/fw190/fw190.html Hope this helps. Nick

Hey Evan, first off, I have been following along the entire time you have been building this 109, and loved every update on the progress. I was in disbelief when I heard about it going in. Yes, I believe a rebuild page would be beneficial to all who have followed along. This can teach us another aspect of building, in that I mean, rebuilding after a crash. Good luck in the rebuild. OK, the flyer did not say Warbird meet, but the website sure boasted like it was going to be this ungodly war bird event. Like I said, I would be pissed too if I showed up on Saturday and seen two FW190's, a few corsairs, a hellcat, four or five Jugs, and 300-400 3D planes. But, would you be any more pissed off if they did not allow any 3D planes, and you showed up to only see the few war birds I listed above?

I went to the show; I tend to not get overly excited to see 3D planes hovering either. (My personal opinion) That's why I went over to the Museum and looked at some real war birds. There is a real problem with someone stopping to hover right when others are flying pattern. This would get annoying. Maybe they should have rules they state no 3D bull crap during normal pattern flying. Just a thought. I traveled about an hour or so away just to see a few war birds. That in itself was worth the drive. I do wish there were more war birds out there to see. The Jets were very cool this year. Any plane could go out of control and into the crowd regardless if it was a 3D plane hovering, or a jet going 200mph like we saw on Saturday. Nowhere did it say war bird fly-in in the advertisement here's the link: (Scroll clear to the bottom) http://www.rcwarbirds.com/returntodayton.htm Nick
