in a word....BEAUTIFUL.......just seems to always make me smile when I see a finished kit waiting on maiden..... as for the weight, i'll echo the "no worries" already posted here...i built a 4*60 as my first kit and i KNOW it was HEAVY!!!! still floated FOREVER .......almost like a trainer....to the point that i had to start cutting the throttle before the final turn to bleed off even more airspeed or risk running out of runway.....

after a break from r/c i'm glad to be back and HIGHLY pleased to get to follow along with a TRUE builders kit such as this one......... when i built this kit a few years ago i installed top and bottom hatches for access to battery/fuel tank compartments...also modified the landing gear so that it could be taken off if need be.... good luck, it was LOTS of fun when i built it, ALL 11 MONTHS of building!!!!! keep us posted BTW, i can direct you to the thread that i posted in if you'd like to read up on other mods before you get started.

RE: 2nd Newbie Build- GP Super Skybolt
at the reccomended cg and inverter the plane will nose down meaning that a bit more tail weight will re reqauired ( or it was for mine) just try the cg as per the plans (it'll fly with no worries) and adjust from there.

i'm sure several will chime in on the knurled nuts for the struts. i'll give my $0.02 worth on the wire struts. they worked flawlessly for me. rounded the ends of the wire nice and smooth and made sure i had ample space in the "sandwich" rib for them to slide. only problem i've got now is remembering to bring my wing bolts!!! LOL check post #549 on page 22 of this thread ..... might give you another idea. one problem i did run into was the wire was crushing the balsa sheeting everytime i inserted the struts....went back and found i had forgotten to "harden" the area with thin ca

RE: Could I build a kit?
anyone can build a kit. most now are laser cut and fit flawlessly. each comes with step by step assembly manual. PLUS you've got an UNLIMITED amount of wealth right here on rcu and most anyone will be more than happy to send a few words of wisdom should you get confused. i think what keeps most people out of the kit building side of the hobby is time and tools. these days most everyone has, at best, "limited" time to build and tools, as you probably already know, can get expensive. but there's several "beginner's lists" of tools you might need to assemble a laser cut kit. check around and keep us informed.

RE: Should i buy a new radio?
from what i've heard spektrum is the way of the future. i'm planning on a radio upgrade myself in the next couple months. i'm looking at the futaba 9ch super. i've seen rumors around the 'net that futaba is planning a retro conversion kit for their "module" based tx's....basically buy a "spektrum" module, pop it in and you're spektrum ready. i don't know for sure, just what i've seen and been told around. might want to check out the futaba support forum to get a clear answer on this. RE: First Bi Plane?
my first was the gp super skybolt. i love it. only problem i've had is getting the thing slow enough to land!!! have to make around 2 patterns throttled WAY back. it floats in nice and settles for 3 points like a breeze. don't get me wrong, this plane nor ANY bipe will fly itslelf. i noticed you've been flying around a year with trainers. i would suggest getting an edge 540 or an extra 300 just for the sake of learning to bring a plane in under power. while they do fly like nothing else, most biped DON'T land like trainers. ...back to the skybolt. the great thing now is it comes in KIT and ARF. i built the kit while honing my powered landing skills. working on and off it took me around 8 months to complete it. here's a link to the maiden flight report. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5039694/anchors_5039694/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#5039694 and here's a link to a great build thread where there's two skybolts built from start to finish http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3561097/anchors_3561097/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#3561097 good luck with whichever one you choose.....keep us posted as to how it goes.

RE: Kit vs Arf
i enjoy building because i know every piece of wood that goes into a model. if i see something i don't like, i change it. i find it easier to come up with $10 here and $30 there compared to $400 all at once. i also get the satisfaction of somthing i make with my two hands taking to the sky and returning to earth. i also like the fact that i've learned more tips, techniques, and skills than i ever though i'd learn by building. i'm not flaming on ARF's i own a few myself. however, i don't think as dearly of them as i do my kits.

RE: Engine for GP Super Skybolt kit
well said dennis. i totally agree with you on the part about unlimited vertical should be left to the 300s and such. my skybolt came out flight ready (minus fuel) with an older os 1.20 surpass w/ pump at 9lbs 4oz. i thought this was a bit heavy for a .60 size plane but it flies great nice big aerobatics, slow and docile, or fast and wild. i use the weight for an advantage. snap rolls only need the sticks to be bumped to the corners and back to center. just getting the maneuver started is enough, the weight carries the plane through the rest. mine is built per specs and plans except for a top and bottom hatch. i find that i have to make around 1 1.2 to 2 patterns to get this thing slow enough to land. ( i guess the thin wings are serving their purose ) long live the skybolt (my first bipe and still my favorite plane.

RE: covering a model
hey chris, first off let me welcome you to rcu. now as for your covering. it really depends on what you're wanting the end result to be. tissue is the lightest (i've never had any deaalings with it, so all this is "by reading" accounts) but it is probably the least durable. the only thing i can see tissue holding up to is rubber band powered models. next is shrink film. i think this is the most versatile "all around" covering on the market. it does require you to learn several new techniques to keep wrinkles to a minimum. you also have to watch the overlap of the film (making sure the overlap is facing the aft of the plane so the wind won't undo the covering job). it's durable (within it's limits), fuelproof, long lasting, easily patched. the last you asked about is silk-n-dope. i plan on covering a model with this sometime in the future just haven't decided what i want the scale look on. yep...that's right...silk-n-dope has lots of benefits durable, fuel proof, paintable, scale. also has some downsides. CAN be messy, labor intensive, you REALLY need a well ventilated area (i just couldn't handle the smell of dope for hours on end), this one also requires you to learn several new skills, and finally, don't coun't on calling up one of your flying buddies to ask for help. silk-n-dope is probably the least used of all the covering now. so there's someone, somewhere, across the sea, state, continent etc that was using silk-n-dope years ago and you and him can talk back and forth on here but don't expect a lot of help should you have any questions. hope this helps and one you get started snap a few pictures to let us know how it's coming along and feel free to ask, if you have any more questions.

RE: 2nd Newbie Build- GP Super Skybolt
hey guys, sorry i've been away so long. been building a new computer you guys know how it is with a new toy.....LOL i would also have to say some type of "in-cowl" muffler would be in order. however i don't recall seeing one for a 1.00 size 2s class engine. somethine else to consider might be a 90 degree adapter, using this you might be able to rotate the muffler to fit behind the engine. this might force you to invert the engine from what you've got now, but it would give more distance between the muffler and the cowl. you might be albe to get away with nothing more than 2 small holes for the exhaust tips. i haven't experimented with this just something from the top of my head, and something else to consider. keep us informed of how it turns out - whatever you decide to do.

i don't think it will be an issue. the firewall is anchored in place by the slots in the fuse doublers. i just filled the entire slot with epoxy and hardened the area around with thin ca "just to be sure" LOL it's kinda funny. i'm getting anxious again reading all the skybolts coming together and anticipating the maidens.......

RE: 2nd Newbie Build- GP Super Skybolt
bldrums...........OUTSTANDING.... club skybolt #3 coming together nicely.......set a tenative date for a maiden yet? and you MUST TAKE VIDEO!!!!! ok as for the covering. if you put a seam of red/blue then a piece of white over it the seam will show through, how bad? it depends on the roll of covering. i pay more attention to make seams overlap toward the tail so wind doesn't get under them. print this out, break out the colored pencils and when you're done pm minnflyer........if he's not too busy he loves tinkering around in photoshop....he even made a view of my trim before i started.

the 1.08 would be just above the top end for 2s. however, i must confess, this plane SCREAMS for a 4s engine if you can afford it. i had an os surpass 1.20 w/ pump that i used just because i had the engine lying around. if i had to buy one it would've been a saito 1.25
