RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
(Test Flight Report) Take off was great with little effort. Balance was great and it flew very true and strait. IT was very smooth as well. The smoothest flyer I have had yet, and I am sure it was because it is electric. Very little vibration. It climbed with little effort and did not run out of steam until I was ready to let off the throttle. First flight was 5 minutes long. After landing the motor, ESC, and battery was cool and not even warM in the least bit. I had only used 1/4 of the battery and I was on the throttle a lot. Second flight was 9 minutes long and I used 1/2 of the 4000 Mah battery. I had flown the whole SPA Expert routine and some, but I could tell the volts had started dropping and decreasing my verticals near the end (less Watts). I would compare this set up to a 5-6 pound plane with an OS 91 4stroke on it. The other thing is that when I got done I put the plane right in the vehicle and home I went. No cleaning, no wiping off oil and so on. No hauling around nitro fuel and so on. Its a wonderful life. This is the hot set up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kevin Clark AMA 340037 SPA 427

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
I simply did not want to try and fit a servo behind the tray I made for the elevator servo to get center line geometry. Also I knew the rudder servo had to go aft my CG point with the battery slightly forward of the CG. This is where it ended up balancing out. With the tri-gear I should not have to worry about a snag unless the grass gets really long. The wire is coated and protected. Also the pull-pull is in-line now with the rudder. If inside the the fuse I would have been at a large angle up to the rudder horn per the stock placement of the horns. All up weight last measured with everything in is 7.62 pounds..... Kevin

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
It is a way to disarm the motor from the outside if something goes wrong or haywire. It breaks the circuit between the battery and electronic speed control. The motor gets no juice. Just an another place a failure can happen in the system, but it is a great way to arm and disarm the motor easy. I can hook up my battery between rounds and leave the arming plug out and it is the same as if I had not plugged the battery up to the ESC/motor. Simply put the plug in and you are ready to go. Also I bought one with a way to discharge the capacitors in the ESC so you do not get a nasty spark when plugging in the arming plug. Its all new to me so I did the best I could in my description. RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Here is a little trick I like to use to get epoxy deep in there. I use a child's liquid cold medicine applicator and bendy straws. It makes a great vacuum to suck up the epoxy and shoot it into where I need it. I only suck up enough to fill the straw and not the applicator so I do not waste the applicator. Kevin

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
ORIGINAL: Skylane The guide tube for the rudder pushrod seems to have a curve in it so that there is a fair amount of friction between the tube and the pushrod. This will affect rudder centering. Has anyone else noticed this problem? I'm considering going to a pull-pull arrangement or a standard solid pushrod. Has anyone else considered or made such modifications? Jeff
Jeff: Once I saw the rudder tube I knew that it was not going to work out for a friction free set up as well too. I decided to go with my rudder servo mounted in the bottom outside of the fuse aft the wing, pull-pull. It has taken some grinding and modification, but it worked out fine. It also helps to balance my 6s pack out. Kevin

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
ORIGINAL: Doug47 I agree on the tuned pipes. The one that came with my Rossi is of course well-matched to the motor so it has a very broad, easy to set needle. Only if you've never run one set up at the proper length for your motor should they ever be criticized. (The information for most any engine appropriate is widely available, from Macs for example and of course other owners.) The reason being is the power increase is not a barely perceptible, 'well, maybe' thing. It's huge, and maybe most importantly it sounds righteous as hell :). When I saw the initial post where someone had posted a picture of the Dirty Birdy ARF not more than 5 minutes elapsed before I ordered it. I love this crate. However, I wouldn;t turn my nose up on the Phoenix 7. Unless there was some huge disparity in build quality or something which I highly doubt coming from Horizon, the Phoenix 7 will be just as good as the original which iis to say it was the standard for many years and was nobody's dog, then or now. I have to figure out how to get a bigger tank in my DB though. This 8 oz tank isn't cutting it at all. A good bit of most patterns is flown wide open and it's 50-50 whether , at least with this gas hog of a motor, will finish the routine in any pattern I've seen. So, who's got the good fix on this ?:) Doug
I am not criticizing a tune pipe set up. [8D] I use to run many tuned pipe set ups when I was young. I loved the sound, speed, and power increase once in the band. It was great times!!!![:D] I now fly SPA and I have to play by their rules. It does not bother me and I do believe it makes all things fair for all competitors in the SPA. So, no problem with the rules. [:)]
ORIGINAL: dolstinske cool, looking forward to your progress. I was surprised at your choice of motors. Wouldn't you want a much higher Kv? I found a Scorpion motor, which was designed to replace .60 glow, with a near 1000Kv, should move a pattern plane at 100 mph on 5S and an 11x8 prop. Gotta keep up with the Rossi's on a tuned pipe :)
I fly SPA pattern, so tuned pipes are not allowed.
ORIGINAL: dolstinske Kevin, I am quite interested in doing one of these on electric. I never thought of inserting the battery there. Do you think there would be room to have an electric firewall mounted retract, and have enough room to slide the battery in? Dale
Yes, it appears so. I am not using the stock mount since it is for glow and I am installing a nose gear mount on the firewall face for my nose gear attachment. Also I am going with the fixed gear, so no worries there. Doxilla: I plan on going through the retract area and making a cage to hold it right above the wing and against the servo tray. The servo tray is way off level to the control surfaces, which will not allow me to get my geometry correct. I will have to remove it, but I am worried about cracking the fuse if removed. Kevin

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Got mine last week and have been getting ready for setting this bird up electric. I started by pulling the main components out and weighing them. I too have a problem with the ailerons not being hinged on center. The left wing is up near the tip and the right wing is down near the tip. Maybe this will wash each other out. This could be a real problem, but I refuse to cut them off and re-do them until I can prove it is causing a severe trim problems or I can not mix it out with my radio. Some pics of the weights. More to come as I get the time to weigh. Electric set up so far on my test stand is as follows: GP RimFire .80 500kv Gene Ace 6s 4000 Mah 25c Lipo 80 ESC (Cheap One) APC 13.5x10,11,12,13 APC 13x6,8 On the 13.5x13 I am just at the 1400 watt limit. I will post more of my test results as I have time to test each prop.
ORIGINAL: ChiefK Kevin, Do you plan to fly SPA events with the setup you wrote about? Planning to be at Asheville in July? ChiefK
I really hope to make the Andersonville SPA event in June with this set up. Knoxville would be wishful thinking, but I may go to see everyone again. I have been working on a Pulsar Biplane with the same set up, but I have had problems with the build that is causing a lack of momentum. There should be no reason I could not have everything ready for Asheville SPA, unless the back order status is extended. Hope to see you out there: Kevin Clark

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Well, I hit the button and could not resist any more. Mine should be on the way once in stock. It still says back order (estimated late April).... That is fine with me since I am going to attempt an electric set up. It looks like if I go with fixed gear there is room to turn that front retract area into a lipo insertion point, and then it could be boxed in the fuse while resting on the root wing chord against the servo tray. It may put the battery a little closer to the nose than I would like, but I can mount servos in the rear if needed. I believe the lipo will be close enough to the CG to work. The little non-retract hatch could use a few magnets and then it would be an easy cover for the Lipo access. I am going to use the Rimfire .80 500kv, 6s 4000Mah, and 80A ESC with a 13.5x13 APC. I have a test rig built that I have been putting the set up through its paces. It has been putting out plenty of power, but I had to adjust the throttle upper limits because that set up was exceeding the motors limits. I think that is why it cuts power once I get past 3/4 throttle????? I may have to adjust the timing on the ESC to allow it to go higher if it has not reached its limits. I will find out once I get my watt meter that I ordered too. Good luck to you all on your assemblies [8D] Kevin Clark AMA 340037 SPA 427
