Streamlining the Viper 500
I know it is not legal to race, but it is fun to blow away anything else on the field. The streamlining makes is sweeter to look at, and faster in the air. Streamline was accomplished with expanding foam, balsa, and Gorilla Glue. It is formed right over the engine case. The streamlining in back of the the engine is an idea from the extreme speed crowd. It is part of a viper wing. I will hang at least a 9X7 or 9X8 on that TT Pro .40 It should do about 140MPH. Hard to get a radar gun on it with so little frontal area. Now doesn't this look slicker than some old engine hanging out front?

RE: Any Arfs?
I just streamlined my Viper 500. I have raced Pylon for years. This one is for my own use. I have an idea that it will be faster than normal. It is about 120MPH without the streamling. Hard to get a radar gun on it though, as there is no frontal area. Do you think the ideas will work? I plan on changing the fuel line to the side as well. RE: 424 racing in SW MO
Run What Ya Brung is not serious pylon racing. It is introduction to racing using common everyday planes. This year I just want to get the locals out of the closets. Next year I will open it up to the big boys and their big toys. What I am thinking so far is using a 2 pole course at 660'. 10 laps is 2.5mi. Each entry is timed solo for 5 laps. NO SANDBAGGING. Planes close to each other's times race three to a heat with the second and third ones flagged off according to the time differences. Example plane A ran 1:22 for 5 laps. Plane B ran 1:15 and plane C ran 1:10. Plane A starts at first flag, Plane B's flag drops 14 sec. later, and Plane C 24 secs. after Plane A. Theoretically all three should have a real tight race right at the end. This is not for those who pylon race regularly. I hope to have a demo at noon of a regular three pole course using Q40 racers. Anyone who would like to come down and help get pylon racing going in SW MO and demo the fast planes is welcome. Again, I am trying to get pylon racing going in SW MO. Next year maybe the real thing. We will see how it goes. I could use the help. Its Aug. 23rd. E-mail me at dcalef@hotmail.com Dana

RE: 424 racing in SW MO
RUN WHAT YA BRUNG - iT IS OFFICIAL! Jopliln R/C Club will hold its first ever pylon race in conjunction with Carl Junction and Carthage Clubs on Aug 23, 2008. We want to make this race just one of many in this area, as we spread the bug to other pilots. If ya'll have a suggestion on how to make this race run really good, or would like to come to it for support or would like to demo real fast planes on a long three pole course, let me know. If you have some beater 424's that I can get from you to loan out to other pilots, then I will make them available. We will run a two pole course 660' ten laps. AM will be timing each plane on five laps, PM will be racing with handicapped starting. We have flags we can use for cuts, I am thinking of adding 10 sec to each cut like they do in Witchita. I should have at least 8 racers now wanting to race. I am looking for more. Any plane. Any fuel. Dana from Joplin.

Pylon Racing in SW MO I think we will start with a Run What Ya Brung. We will time 5 laps in the morning, run staggered or handicapped starts in the PM with three plane heats. I will contact local clubs I would like a demo of something real fast on three poles to show them what real racing looks like. I am thinking of Aug 16, 2008 as our first race in Joplin. Aug. 23 as alternate. Any suggestions on running a race of this nature? Any rules or guidelines? Need flaggers or pylon judges? Dana

Solar Hotliner Sailplane
I want to build a solar powered sailplane/hotliner that can get up to altitude, ride the thermals, come swooping down at 100 mph, do some loops and rolls, then climb to altitude for another charge. I'm thinking at least 2 meter. I have flown a Graupner 2 meter with brushless, gearbox and folding prop. It lasts for an hour, but now with the thin film solar, I think it would be fun. What airframe? what power requirements? can I get the film? Should I use a battery pack or is there a lighter capacitor to charge? could we put one together in this thread? RE: Official RCU Fliton Inspire 60 build thread!
As the above two posts show, I have put a lot of time into the Inspire 60. I put a double tapered shim between the landing gear and the mounting plate to take out some awful looking bow leggedness. I replaced the ends of the pushrods with Dubro 4/40 quick links and solder ends. I added a tube to the cowl to direct the glo igniter. I could not get a remote igniter to deliver enough power. I put on 2.75" treaded foam wheels to absorb schock and take stress of the landing gear with larger diameter wheel. My first fuse, I covered with automotive clear coat. I may do the same here, as it is showing trim peeling. I modified the tail wheel adding a Sullivan spring to it instead of direct attachment. I am using a remote filler and pressure relief for the fuel tank. I put in standard size servos on the ailerons, JR ST126mg and have flown it fast and snapped it with no flutter. JR DS811 elevator, Futaba S9151 rudder, mini servo throttle. The Insire 60 is a wonderful flying plane with lots of great qualities in precision and 3-D. I set expo higher than norm due to the large control surfaces. If Fliton could match quality of covering landing gear and hardware with the airframe, it would have a real winner.

RE: Official RCU Fliton Inspire 60 build thread!
Here's my recover. It's ultracote purple, metallic green, sliver and white, with closely matching orange econocote. It weighs exactly 6 Lbs., but still goes vert. with the YS 63s and 13X6 prop. I like the speed of the plane with the 13X6 and the ease of making a large loop, but the ability to hang it on the prop. Just get 11K RPM static at 40 degrees air temp. in MO. The decals are on the cowl, rt. side and next to pilot.

RE: Official RCU Fliton Inspire 60 build thread!
Here's some decal stuff. I also have the whole thing on a Word Document with the FZ 63 S pretty close to the original. Can't seem to upload it. If you e-mail me at dcalef@hotmail.com, I will send you the document already ready to edit and print. I printed it on Testor's Decal Paper found at Hobby Lobby. 6 8.5 X 5.5" sheets for $10. The decals are soak and apply. They stick tight and have less edge than the supplied decals. I affixed the ink with a spray clear. I will send pictures of the completed plane next.

RE: 424 racing in SW MO
AJ Had such a good time in KC three pole and also in Witchita 2 pole 1000'. There is room in Joplin to set up anything we care to run. We have no paved runway to land on, just short grass, mostly bermuda. We could do the three pole longer course if it will motivate more people to come. Standing start would be fine. We have about 1500' between tree lines, so we have room to play. We just have to move north in the flying field a little. You are right AJ, about the local support. At this point, I do not have the number of workers it would require to run a good race. Your volunteers and the volunteers in Witchita were just fantastic, to sit in the hot sun watching screaming little planes fly around pylons all day long must take dedication and some type of internal motivation. I would have to get that and the club backing to run a good race. How bout I set a date and then work on the details. If I do not get the volunteers or the flyers, then I will cancel. What date would work for those looking into this post? I am thinking one of the weekends in July. Club racers and Q500 sound good to me, with a one day event. not sure of Sat or Sun is best. Our field is more open on Sat., but more events are also planned for Sat. Build it, they will come. I get motivated better by deadlines than dreams. Looking to beat you again, Eddie Let's get our heads together for this one. Dana

RE: Senior Telemaster bombay night fly skydiver
I did a lot of research on LED hookup to battery. I found that the best way to light without overpowering LEDs is to use a current regulating circuit with resistor matched to give each bulb the voltage it runs best at. Sites like “otherpower.com or “LED linear1.org give values for resistors and suggestions for using a LM317 voltage regulating chip. Try “LED current limiter in Google I just made it simple for white LEDs. I bought a string of clearanced white LED Phillips super bright Christmas lights and stripped out the LEDs. I put the LEDs where I wanted them and used stranded telephone wire to run voltage to each of them in parallel. While the schematic calls for a resistor, I found that after three LEDs, I did not need the resistor, which would eat up more energy. I have about 40 white LEDs in the wings & fuse, shining on the wings from the fuse, and on the fuse and vert. stab. from the wings and horiz stab. I power these with a single cell 3.7 volt 2100mAh LiPoly battery. I have flown this many, many times and have no bulbs burn out. This will power all 40 LEDs for hours. More time than all the flying you will do in one night. This is not the ideal way to treat LEDs, but it is simple. You can match LED’s by lighting them all up and taking out the greener or less bright ones. Red, Yellow, and Green LEDs take 1.7 – 2 Volts, so they either need a resistor or very precise voltage match. I have never had any luck directly hooking the colored LEDs to a battery. Therefore I used a sequencer with built in resistor. I used a Bell LED bicycle taillight for the red LEDs. It runs on two AA cells, which I switched to smaller rechargable NiCad cells. I found on eBay an 8 LED red chaser sequencer that I switched to yellow since they are the same voltage. I power it with the same LiPoly batt. as the white lights, but it could be powered for 75 hours with the two button cells that come with the $15 unit. The sequences can be set to all be on or to flash in 17 patterns. The wiring is more complex, as each LED requires a pair of wires back to the sequencer board. The new $21 unit has all the wring.

RE: 424 racing in SW MO
How about flying a race circuit in 2008, such as Wichita, Copan, KC, Joplin, and another this summer? I can get the Joplin field flyable for two pole 660' 10 lap pylon racing. We could race 2-pole 1000', 7 laps in Witchita, and the three pole short course in KC. It would be like the different races of NASCAR, with each track being different. Joplin would be flying start, take off and land on short grass, cut flags at both pylons. I like the idea of adding 10 sec. to cuts. We could race three classes, the Q-500 (424), the Formula 1 (421), and the Skyraider. Unlike Witchita, we would not have to be flying over campers. [;)] We have a big area out of town. If interested sign on, we will set dates.

Thanks I looked on the internet, if found a site for waving flag wing covering. Don't know where it is now, but simply it is flat grey for the "folds" covered with transparent red and blue. I cut out the stars from the blue. I tried to make the red covering wave like a flag in the breeze with the sharp dips at the grey "folds".

Senior Telemaster bombay night fly skydiver
Wanted to share some pics of one of my favorite planes. I fly it more than my Lanier Yak, Sig Fazer, 2 meter sailplane, and Viper combined. I kit bashed it winter of '05-'06 and modified it a little since. Powered by a sweet Saito .82 one piece wing, no dihedral, bolted on with (4) 1/4-20 nylon bolts. Bombay that opens and closes sequentially. Night flying lights, lots of LED's shining in and on the plane, yellow on bottom on a sequencer with 17 patterns, and red on tail with 5 patterns. 37 whites and 9 yellows powered by one cell 2100 li-poly, lasts all night, tail (2) sub AAAA's Skydiver holds a 3' round ripstop nylon parachute, and shines 5 random sequencing orange lights on the 'chute. Sequencer and batteries in a "backpack" from Hobby Lobby sold as shirt lights. Any Questions? I will check on this thread regularly

RE: Official RCU Fliton Inspire 60 build thread!
I just buried my new Fliton Inspire today on my second flight. I was reaching for the elevator trim and pulled down the off switch instead. I must say though, It flew great. I was doing knife edge loops on the first flight, it was so stable. However, the control surfaces are huge for such a light plane. I was doing inverted flat spins on low rates and did not even dare to step it up to high. Very twitchy for clean high speed slow rolls, as a tiny input makes a big movement in the tail. Hangs nice on the prop. Wish I could've tried more with it. It totally disintergrated upon impact. I think my YS63s will be OK after a new pushrod and tube. I may get another Inspire, or research what other 3D plane would be a good match for this engine. What I did not like in my brief encounter with this plane is that there was too little difference between top and bottom. If I were to build another, I would have to change covering. I had covered it all with auto clear coat paint. Such a shame. I do have the servos, larger wheels, motor mount vibration dampers, 2-56 control surface connecting rods, DuBro safety Lock Kwik Link clevises, canopy glue, Landing gear shims for making it stand straight, and all the many other mods I have found necessary to fly this plane. But is it worth the effort? Anybody recommend a good 3-D plane for a YS63s that looks like a plane (not foam or profile) I am tired of looking at Edges, Extras, and Yaks. Everyone has these. What I liked about the Inspire was new lines. That rudder is magnificent! What now?

RE: Lanier Yak
ORIGINAL: petergordon Does anyone know of anybody who has installed a ZDZ 60 in this bird? I decided to do away with the zdz 50 and put in the bigger motor. Problem is that the standoff lengths are now only 3/4" and that puts the needles right in the middle of the firewall!!! I've had to remove the carb, and re-attach on the back side of the firewall. I haven't tightened up the carb bolts yet. I can notch the firewall to clear the needles, but then is the issue of adjusting them. I though of drilling an access hole through the top of the firewall to get to the needle, but I don't want to weaken the firewall too much. I suppose I could then laminate both sides of the firewall with a piece of something to stiffen the weaken area. Ideas? Peter
Peter, I have a ZDZ60 in my plane. I use longer standoffs, that put the adjustments outside the box. Still had to make quite a hole for the carb., but it does not seem to mind. I put more holes in the box to lighten it. The ZDZ60 is just about right for this plane. Not too heavy, not too powerful. I am using a wood Zinger Pro 24/8. Seems to pull uplines good, but need nearly full throttle to accelerate well. I did need a few degrees of right thrust built into the standoffs, about 1/8" shorter on one side, to make it pull up straight. I have tried a Carbon Fiber Mejzlik 22/12 and wood Bolly 24/10. Liked the Bolly, but may like the Zinger size better. It turns 6200 on the ground and sounds good in the air.

Installed a soft mount for less than $10 got 10-32 well nuts and 1" 10-32 hex cap screws figured spacing on motor mounts, marked firewall, drilled out firewall for well nuts. Installed well nuts with a little Elmers glue, used #10 fender washer and mounted engine mount snug, using blue loc tite. Measuered 130mm firewall to engine prop backplate. Used 8-32 bolts tapping engine mount and using nylon lock nuts for extra security. Feels rugged and secure, yet cushioned.

RE: Official RCU Fliton Inspire 60 build thread!
Cool, gonna put some on today! Friday I sprayed clearcoat over the whole plane. I had some leftover automotive urathane clearcoat that I thinned a little more than usual. It went on nice, with no need for sanding, and really added a dimension of shiny over the colors and was absolutely clear on the transparent parts. I glued in the tail and ailerons first. I used trim adhesive solvent over the trim and ironed down any loose trim, and added decals prior to spraying. Then I cleaned up all with denatured alcohol. Used a professional gravity feed gun on low volume, low air, narrow pattern settings. Came out better than I expected. Only used 4 fluid oz. (volume, not weight) of which some oversprayed, about 1/2 evaporated, probably adding no more than 2 oz weight to the plane. If it keeps the trim on, it was well worth it. Besides, it adds depth to the shine, making the purple trim much closer to the the purple cowl paint. I could not stand the bow-legged look, especially with the 3" wheels, so I added a double tapered 3/16 ply shim between the gear and the plate the gear bolt to. It makes it look much better. If the gear sag later I can remove it. It is full 3/16 in the center and tapers to 0 at the side of the fuse (on both sides). Broke in my YS63s Thursday and am going to mount it to the firewall today (Monday) using the nuts mentioned above. Cant wait to fly this bird. I ordered a pair of HiTec 5245MG servos (76oz at 6v.) for the alerions, but am concerned about flutter. I will use a Futaba 9251 (131 oz) for the rudder and JR DS811 (66oz at 6v) for the elevator as I already had these. Is there concern about flutter? I used to run my Sig Fazer at extreme speeds straight downwards for fun and pull blenders with no ill effects on standard JR 517's. I blew up my UCanDo .46 with the JR 537's (43oz) due to flutter. I am an former precision aerobatic flyer, so I want to be able to do full throttle maneuvers without ripping the plane apart. I also want to do 3-D, blending the two into freestyle flying. Is it possible?

RE: KCRC 424 Race, Oct. 6th
this was a blast! Well run race A.J., setting out in the broiling sun wavaing a flag for 6 hours, all the prep work, all the details with all the volunteer staff! Terrific! It was good to meet Kansas City folks that are into pylon racing. the short course was different, especially after running two weeks ago the Witicha 100' 2-pylon course. It had a more professional feel to it with the lights and the colors on the wing and the matrix and such. Seemed short, but I think the skill of handling a plane and finding a good line around the pylons became more evident on the short course. I am learning from Carl M. how to come tight to #2, and learning from his mistakes how to not cut #3. Thanks for the lessons, everyone. Dana from Joplin

RE: Official RCU Fliton Inspire 60 build thread!
Began building the Inspire. Must say the craftsmanship of the plane is beautiful. Read about the landing gear on this post. They are so far off from being square, there has to be a mistake. I will use a shim in the center to splay out the legs, and may re-drill the axle hole. I will use at least 3" ultralight Dubro treaded foam wheels. They only weigh a few grams more, and will put less stress on the gear. The pushrods are overkill. The four together weigh as much as one leg. Will have to replace with cf or graphite. I really liked the wing tube. nice and light. I was not used to rubber bands holding the wings on. I guess they work. Anyone using soft mounts to isolate 4-stroke vibration? Not enough hinges for ailerons. I added a few, will pin them, and will seal the gap with clear covering top and bottom. I will go over every glue joint and add CA to especially the wing tube. I ordered my YS63s friday and am looking forward to running one of my favorite engines again. What prop and spinner should I use? What's the power like? Dana from Joplin

RE: Official RCU Fliton Inspire 60 build thread!
What is the recommended torque for servos on this plane? I can get JR 821 digital servos with 72 oz for $15 each, but they are standard size and a little heavy. I'm considering buying a new radio system with them included. The directions are woefully short on text, and specs. How did the clearcoat work out? Did it stop trim from peeling off? I am just starting to build this, and have read the thread start to finish. I am concerned about covering and landing gear and wonder if I should make the changes before putting it together. I plan on using the YS 63 because I have used YS in my pattern ship before and loved it. From what I hear, the standard muffler is just fine, no need for header and tuned pipe. I do not want flutter. The mounting position of the aileron servo seems wrong. why not center it? I ruined my U Can DO with flutter. So, servo specs, clearcoat answers. Thanks
