RE: Austars 97
OK I understand what your saying, however I wouldn't put a 50cc in it, your choice, you will need to beef up the engine box, the landing gear mounts etc. I would class this plane as a nice easy Sunday flier not a workhorse. Using a 3mtr span Willie Monster (scratch built) as a dedicated tow plane, 2 actually, TMM 53cc and TMM 106cc powered, best flying towplane full stop IMHO, has a working U/C, tows nearly hands off, has performed flawlessly now for a few years. Its not scale and we dont tow vertical, it just keeps on doing the job and is a pleasure to fly. Just about land it anywhere. Cheers Paul

RE: Austars 97
Hi Rosco Nah, I dont work for anyone but me.[:)] I like plenty of power in my planes but 50cc would be a waste IMHO, although its a big airframe for the span its only lightweight, my MLD 28 drags it around fine. Have not weighed it properly but I guess around 6Kg's would pull it up, so no need to MOP it. No lead at all to balance, always my preference if possible. Cheers Paul
ORIGINAL: blue77 Hello....I'm trying to decide on an agwagon type plane for a 30cc gas engine......so far RC Guys and the one discussed here...is the Austars the same as the Texas RC? Thanks, B7
Hi B7 Yep thats the exact same one, looks like he sells much of the same range as Austars. 30cc is a perfect size for this bird, I found that this plane was built everybit as good as any name brand on the market, one of the best ARF's I have ever had. IMHO this is the best one around. Hope this helps. Cheers Paul

Not sure how many pawnees you are allowed before you have a pawnee problem but I love my 40 size have been scratch building a 40% and have a 33% on the way...can I squeez one more in the shed?
Hi Rosco Dont know anything about the dogtooth one at all, but it looks nice for sure. This Pawnee is nice and seems to be quite popular, performs well I am sure you would be happy with it, although you are into very large scale everything, I keep tabs on your builds, nice stuff indeed.[:)] You can never have too many....... RE: Austar cessna 188 AG Husky Review
Hi Schai Have not had any issues with mine, flies great, tows and will do rolls spins, stall turns etc no problem. Mine is the original version and covering is not oracover as advertised but then I usually recover my models after a couple of years flying with Oracover (profilm) anyway. Using a TMM53CC engine , a 112cc is IMHO too much engine. To answer your questions.. 1. Shear webbing is ply with laser cut holes, so no solid webbing from top to bottom. Has extra ply around joiner tube. Mine is one of the original airframes. 2. No concerns with mine. 3. Never had any flutter on any surface. 4. You should never pick up any wing by the tip, the wings are light but strong. 5. No not required. We have the 120" version with a TMM106cc, even at 17kg's and the same wing construction have not had any issues. They both fly great. Hope this helps. Cheers Paul
ORIGINAL: witooa Hi Paul Yes it is a very light airframe for the size, I guess they cater for electrec these days. I have a 1/4 scale PT-19 Great planes ARF with a 120 Magnum its a lot heavier airframe, they weren't built for electrec them days, Looking forward to the pictures updates I meed good landing gear our field has the odd 1 or 2 rabbit holes to dodge. Have you any idea for a syray system to set it off, say talcom powder or similar ?? Cheers witooa.
You will definately need to beef up the landing gear to handle the rabbits or a rough strip. There is not much structure between the LG and the firewall. There are a few spray system designs somewhere on RCUniverse or RCGroups just do a search. Have not done any spray systems at all. Cheers Paul

RE: Austars 97
Hi Witooa The 160 will be heaps of power for towing 2 mtr gliders for sure. This is a light weight airframe for its size so you dont need a lot of power. I have since beefed up the landing gear by adding more braces and also some aluminium angle bolted to the side of the fus. Rock solid now. I have made some changes to tweak a few things , will take some pics later. Cheers Paul
ORIGINAL: handyman 220 I have this kit NIB that I have not started to build yet. I thought I saw posted somewhere that you needed a regular JR 791 retract servo and a reversed 791 retract servo for the LG to work correctly, but I can't find the post now. Can someone who has used the mechanical gear give me an answer please? I am ready to start buying the retract servos and want to buy the correct ones. Thanks [:)]
I just used Hitec retract servos (HS75BB) and they worked fine without any issue, you dont need reversed servo's to work at all just follow the instruction manual. Always use HS75BB or GWS S136GM retract servo's on everything including my 5mtr 11kg scale glider. I have since replaced the retracts with robart pneumatic (fly off grass) added bigger wheels, am very pleased with the performance much better than the original especially with the extra travel in the struts. RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
I recovered the wing with oracover(ultracote) and it was the best thing I did. This is my favourite covering that I use on everything. I only wish I had recovered the fus before assembly as its so much easier to do when its in pieces as this is an excellent airframe and an even better flier that I want to keep for as long as possible. Beefed up the retract area and added Robart oleos to original retracts and the whole wing is now solid as. Its worth the effort long term. Cheers Paul

Heres some video's taken with a 2GB SD card tiny digital video camera that was taped to the tail of my DG600. Not bad for $30. These were taken last Saturday so disregard the camera date its not set yet. Just used sticky tape and a piece of cardboard to mount the camera. We were just testing it out. There is some wind noise, will use some foam over the mic next time. Tucked in behing the tug and another glider going up at one stage. http://www.youtube.com:80/user/TheHoo00x Cheers Paul

RE: AUSTARS MODEL new 120 Ag Husky build
Hi Guys Heres some more pics of the Husky. Fitted pilot, 1/3rd scale, made and fitted all the decals, based on an American registration, the tow release system setup as a bridle release. Navigation lights were also fitted. The 100cc optional cowl has not arrived yet. It sure looks the business, a very impressive model. The CG position was a right pain to get correct, first we based it on the smaller Husky as a percentage of the chord...no good at all. Then used winfoil, drawing the wing planform and it calculated a figure, used another 2 programs and they were all different, punched the no.s in for the 110 Husky and the No's are different to the actual working/flying CG ..... what the hell is going on. So we balanced it inverted on the front wing joiner, using our twine method hanging from the roof, still a 2 man job with this baby. Flew it again yesterday and she's now sweet, ready to go to the Rally. Had everything ready to do a video and the $%$#@ camera battery was left on and was flat. The weather was absolutely perfect for it too. Sorry you'll have to wait till next week. Cheers Paul

RE: AUSTARS MODEL new 120 Ag Husky build
ORIGINAL: musiccityfan Hey Paul! Any new news to report on the Aghusky? So far it looks awesome!
Hi Musiccityfan Been as busy as a one armed juggler. Currently in the process of finishing it off properly ready for the upcoming Rally shortly. Have fitted the control surface corrugations after removing the covering and leaving about 3/16" overlap and glued with pacer 560 canopy glue. Re installing the engine ready to accept the redesigned optional 100cc cowl, which will be 1" longer and have bumps to accommodate the plugs. Being longer will allow the engine to be moved forward and hopefully less weight. Its supposed to arrive next week which is cutting it a bit fine. Making a complete set of decals for it, also want to install the tow release system as we will be using it primarily for towing 8kg+ sailplanes. Won't have a chance of fitting canisters for a while, want to get some air time with it first maybe we wont need them. I will probably do a video at the Rally and post it here when its done. I have the smaller 110" one which is fantastic and the 120" one is even better, really nice plane. Stay tuned. Cheers Paul

Hi CCostant and Joe Thanks for the info and pictures, appreciate it. I agree Joe, if Robart had pics I would have probably got the same ones as ccostant, no matter, these will do the job and I will follow Joe's mod with the gear doors. I was mucking with them last night and also put a washer under the outboard screws. The replacement bottom part from the 662P47 is also a good sugggestion, I will look into that as an option but would rather not spend any more money. Nice work guys and thanks heaps. Cheers Paul

RE: New 81
ORIGINAL: joeflyer The only modification to the wing was to make the wheel opening larger and provide a small cut-out for the scissors link, as shown in my pictures. Since I had to cut into the ribs a bit some reinforcement was added. Plus I wanted to glue in a rigid wheel well liner to stiffen up that area. I also made new gear doors since the originals didn't look right with the larger wheels. The pre-drilled holes in the mounting rails didn't quite line up with the Robarts so I had to file the retract holes into a slight oval. Most of the modifications were to accommodate the larger wheels. If you wanted to stay with 3.5'' wheels you wouldn't have to do much at all. The 3.5'' wheels just didn't look scale enough to me. I believe the Sierra retracts will bolt right in, but again you would have to modify the wheel wells if you want larger wheels. The air tank is mounted the fuse bottom just behind the canopy cover. There is plenty of room in the fuse to put it where ever you like. Joe
Joeflyer, Can you tell me how you finished up your setup please seeing I am using the very same retract/strut combo. How did you make the gear doors as you can see in the above picture the offset struts, stick out of the wing too far. Or have you changed something. Thanks. Cheers Paul

RE: New 81
ORIGINAL: ccostant I did exactly the same with the retracts (4'' robart wheels) and air tank. I made new doors that are spit so when the oleo compresses the gear door doesn't hit the ground. Here's mine on a final.
Hi ccostant I am in the process of doing the same, could you post some pics of the detail for the gear doors you have done, I would appreciate it. Using the same robart retracts as Joeflyer and the offset arm sticks way above the wing surface how did you solve this. Also using dubro wheels the ones with airvalve and they seem to be too heavy for the retract to lift at 100psi what robart wheels are you guys using? Thanks Paul

RE: Austars 97
Hi Guys Well she’s all finished and maidened. The control throws in the instructions are way out, (like 45Deg) I don’t think so, so I set up what I thought would be a good start for the airframe, worked out fine for me, I can measure these if anyone wants the info. CG was set as per the book, on the wing joiner box. The engine had not been run so I left the cowl off for the initial startup, it took a fair amount of priming and some fuel squirted directly into the carby to get it to fire. I then used my nitro starter to fire it up which took a few turns before the dry carby was up to its task. It idled pretty sweet right away so let it run for about 5 mins with varying throttle settings, tweaked the High needle a little to get a transition and then replaced the cowl. The day was bleak and windy not the best weather at all for a maiden flight. Taxied it out, and I have found that my Ag planes all taxi sweet with no tendency to tip forward at all, lined her up and slowly opened the throttle, straight down the strip and she was airborne in about 8 ft due to the wind but no problems she just climbed away nicely. A small amount of aileron trim was all that was required to get straight & level flight. Did a few circuits and tested the stall, none to speak off, flies great, very much like my smaller H9 Pawnee. Had 3 flights with 1 deadstick on approach which was no issue at all. The engine quit due to sucking air bubbles into the fuel line which I tracked back to the tank. It was shaking too much at low fuel level so some remedial work will be done here; also the tank actually slants forward, not the ideal layout. So a few tweaks and more engine running is in order. First impressions are good and this will be a keeper for sure, I will probably sell the smaller one, although reluctantly. Cheers Paul

RE: Austars 97
Hi Guys All thats left is to balance it. I have devised a way to balance big planes easily and on your own, using strong twine and a piece of ply, this depends on how many wing joiners there are. Won't work for everything but works well with these types of setups. Hard to explain, see pics. 1. One wing joiner if the CG is on the joiner.... Have the plane setup on the ground with a gap between the wing and the fus, loop the twine around the joiner both sides , stand over the plane, take up the slack and lift, see how it lays and make your adjustments to get the CG correct by adding lead or moving stuff around. 2. Two joiners or 1 joiner and incidence pin, CG not on the joiner...Have a ply plate about 1" wide long enough to go under each joiner/s/incidence pin, tie the twine to the ply and put the ply plate (on its edge) under each joiner/s/incidence pin and as above take up the slack and lift, your lifting the plane with the ply plate under the joiner/s/incidence pin, you may have to move the twine/ply plate to get the twine on the CG as this is the pivot point.(the correct CG location) Adjust as necessary to get the CG correct. 3. If the plane is too heavy, and it will be after you do this a few times, put it on a table, or leave it on the ground just use longer twine, and tie it to the roof, using the twine /ply method above, so its just off the table/ground, it will seesaw until you make your adjustments to get it spot on. As you only need it about 2/3 inches in the air, it can't fall and break and you only have to lift it once so you can take your time doing it right. Cheers Paul
