RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Just got home from work. Good thing I recently stumbled upon a warbird that I'd never heard of before.... What aircraft? 1) it is a low wing monoplane with fixed landing gear 2) production aircraft used a 115hp engine 3) it required precise piloting
ORIGINAL: Chad Veich However, if scale accuracy is not of great importance then I would add that there are many very nice Mk.VIII paint jobs which would look stunning on the Mk.XIV airframe.
Currently, I am very much in favor of What-If models: aircraft that could exist with some tweaks in world history. There's some pretty stunning examples of that in the plastic and virtual modeling circles.
ORIGINAL: Chad Veich Very true but the Allison does a pretty fine job of pulling around Mustangs too, and even one Spitfire that I'm aware of. From what I've heard the Allison powered 'stang will actually run away from the Merlin powered models at low altitudes.
No doubt :) If "the Allison does a pretty fine job of pulling around Mustangs", it must be more than enough for a smaller aircaft. Reading some Spitfire/Merlin literature, I've got the impression that performance higher up was a priority for many Merlin models. Different supercharger configurations seem to be one of the major differences between all the different Merlins.

Yak-3 is smaller and lighter than a P-51 or Spitfire, so an Allison will pull it along quite nicely.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
OK, here goes. I don't think this has been the correct answer for a while. What aircraft? 1 It was simply a well-conceived, soundly designed (...) that maintained during maturity the success that attended its infancy 2 The auxiliary services were mostly electrical apart from the undercarriage and radiator, which were hydraulically operated, and the flaps which were directly connected to a manually-operated handwheel and in consequence, tediously slow to lower.

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
What aircraft? 1) It was derived from a type that first flew about two years before the idea for this one came up. 2) First the idea was refused by a manufacturer. After another couple of years, it was canceled from the government's side. 3) After yet another two years, it was entering service. 4) It stayed in service for about 10 years and more than 2,000 were built. 5) Especially the early models had a reputation for fragility, for carrier operations.
