RE: INSTANT CURE TO WINTER BLUES! ONLY $235!!
Mmmmm - I too need ear plugs at movies. Decades of industrial machines and model engines? Take care guys! I've lost some high-frequency hearing, but can still enjoy diesels and my '60's Triumph 650 twin on methanol and megaphones. :) Peter

RE: Cylinder came loose
No gaskets needed in a perfect world, but those Taipan castings were moved around in batches between machining, bead blasting and assembly and even though "carefully placed" :) in containers, an extra precaution of a very thin paper seal was deemed neccessary. Peter

RE: New is old.
Hey! I wasn't talking modern: - back in the '70's. We moved from manual centre grinder, to power infeed plunge grinding to a mechanical stop, to auto-sizing power infeed and on to centreless grinder plunge infeed. All, as said, not necessarily better, just faster and different skills needed. Peter

New is old.
I've been finish grinding the journals of a batch of crankshafts, in identical fashion to how I did working with my Father 50 years ago. I'm not sure if using this older technology should make me happy or sad, but I actually feel quite good about it. As we moved on at Taipan, we changed methods; not neccessarily giving a better or poorer result, but more automated to suit our increasing production. I would never have guessed then that I would be using a manual Overbeck Centre Grinder in my later years. :) Peter

RE: A little interview with Ron Val!
What we are seeing here is flutter rather than a steady flex forward. It could be from irregular engine revs, or from a propeller blade tip irregular vortex. Any regular forward flex will be less (Than on the bench.) when the 'plane is in level flight and will increase under load as it climbs. But, ahh, the trick is to get the tips to wash-out as they flex forward. ;) Peter

RE: Diesels are dead ll
There you go then! With David Owen, Steve Rothwell and now David Burke, there are at least four of us making diesels in Australia. Of course they are all built for purpose, not mainstream and never intended to be so. Peter

RE: Diesels are dead ll
Hey Dave, Down here, to be commercial, you would probably need to charge $50.00 just to receive the order for a single head, pack it and get it to the post. That's with the "out-of-work-contract-CNC-machinist" making it for nothing. (A call-out to look at the washing machine costs us $70.00.) Peter

RE: Curry with your Irvine Sir?
A little extra. The car is one of four built in Melbourne by Ron Kenner when he was only 27; now 74 and very active. It ran a Norton 500, Triumph 500's and 650's. It set a standing 1/4 mile record in 1965. With it's Brabham-style spaceframe and classic suspension it was advanced, in a time when Australia was very much to the forefront in motor racing. I bought it as only a rusty space frame and several boxes of very rusty parts; then 18 months of rebuild. Of course, I need constant fettling to keep it racing. The pic shows it with mufflers. At some tracks I can run megaphones! :) On methanol, it is really just a large model engine. Peter

RE: Curry with your Irvine Sir?
Ahh, the joys of old Brit. 'bikes. I run a 1960, Triumph 650 engine on methanol in my 1964 historic racecar. No matter how much attention, it still marks it's territory with castor oil.

Thanks for the concern from far away. I'm 100 Km south of Brisbane and OK on high ground. My Son is in the thick of it all (His property is OK.) involved in reinstating communications: little sleeping. The help and spirit from all sides, government, rescue, business, community and volunteer is just amazing. It will be years of clean-up and rebuilding. Peter

RE: Cox Coming back???
Bernie, I certainly couldn't envisage making 1,000 TD's for $55,000.00 in Australia. The materials and packaging would soak up most of that! I hope that most on this forum are suitably thankful for what you have done already. Peter

RE: tiapan 10x4 grey composite prop
The Taipan prop design was developed back in the 1/4 Midget pylon days. The tips will wash-out when they flex forward under a high load (pylon turns) and the wide, thick cuffs will continue to pull close to stall. This works well in C/L, particularly combat. As Fiery said, there's a valid reason for most things. Peter

RE: Brodak MK II .049 RC Engine
Vic's got it about right. If anyone's really convinced, they can become a distributor. They just need to raise the money and approach a manufacturer. There are plenty with talent to make an engine, but those guys mostly need to pay the mortgage and feed the family. Peter

RE: Taipan 2.5 - sub piston induction & contra piston questions
Well, here I am going the other way! I have a "seriously modified" Triumph 6T 650 engine on the bench in preparation for my 1964 open-wheel race car rebuild. Running on methanol and castor of course. Not a diesel, but at least a "big model engine". :) Peter

RE: Gordon Burford
I thank you all for your most kind comments and condolences. Dad enjoyed a full life, remaining physically and mentally active to the end. He never ceased observing and considering the function of all around him. He used cable-ties to modify the braking function of his walking frame: we were critically examining the construction of his faulty blood-sampling pen during his last moments. We miss him and his inspiration. Peter
