RE: Building the new H9 Sukhoi SU 26MM
I thought I read from Mike McConville taht the only similarity between the two planes was the canopy (or was that the cowl...). Peter

RE: Building the new H9 Sukhoi SU 26MM
I've just recently purchased the airframe from someone else. They had a DA 85 in it. I'm going with a ZDZ 80 Super. I got the mounting dimensions from the two websites, and made a 1/4" plywood template with both sets of 1/4" holes in it. I used the DA 85 holes to line up the template, then drilled through the ZDZ 80 holes. The ZDZ 80 super holes are 90mm across by 63mm high. The DA 85 holes are 88mm across by 80mm high, so my holes fit neatly within the DA 85 holes. Now, my engine sticks out 18mm more than the DA 85, but I think it looks fine that way. Because of the large hole that you cut out for the DA 85 (from the paper template with the kit), I don't have a lot of wood to spare, so I'm first going to plug the DA 85 holes, then I'll likely make an internal cut-out to ad some stiffness. I can't scab anything onto the outside as that just pushes the engine further out. This should be a clean, easy conversion between engines. Peter

RE: Lanier Yak
Does anyone know of anybody who has installed a ZDZ 60 in this bird? I decided to do away with the zdz 50 and put in the bigger motor. Problem is that the standoff lengths are now only 3/4" and that puts the needles right in the middle of the firewall!!! I've had to remove the carb, and re-attach on the back side of the firewall. I haven't tightened up the carb bolts yet. I can notch the firewall to clear the needles, but then is the issue of adjusting them. I though of drilling an access hole through the top of the firewall to get to the needle, but I don't want to weaken the firewall too much. I suppose I could then laminate both sides of the firewall with a piece of something to stiffen the weaken area. Ideas? Peter

RE: Lanier Yak
Has anyone seen the new Lanier 94" Yak in the flesh? Any threads started on the new big brother? (couldn't find any through my search). They STILL got the manual wrong, used Edge pictures instead of Yak, reference a DA 50 for the 94" - don't think so! I'm rebuilding my 87" Yak 54 after an engine flame-out on a vertical takeoff. Just enough height to stall it forward and land hard on the belly. The LG took the brunt, but the weight of the motor up front tore the nose off ahead of the wing tube. I've removed all the debris, stuck it back together, traced the patterns, and made up all new double laminated ply parts, except I choose not to add the poorly located lightening holes in the critical locations (landing gear plate, fuse sides directly above the gear plate, etc). I was able to break the FG wing tube away from the fuse sides and slide it out, so I can now drop in my new engine box and gear structure in one piece. Then it's just some cosmetic work. I had always planned to swap out the ZDZ 50 for my ZDZ 60, even before the mishap. Now I'll do it for sure, but best of all I get to relocate the firewall back about 1 inch to accomodate for the longer motor. Off to Toledo to buy some matching covering for cheap! Peter

RE: Lanier Yak
Now I'm not bashing ARF's here, but here is what I found: The aluminum tail bracket is too soft. Swapped out for a spring steel one. The main wheels were made of two different density foam. One wheel was hard, the onther held a flat spot on the bottom for over a week! The tail wheel eventually falls apart. The method of using bolt/lock washer/ bonded washer works PERFECT on the cowl and hatch. I'm converting over all my GS planse to this! The main LG is bendy. Grease the landings to avoid replacing. I'll likely bend up a set myself. The plane flies very lightly in the air. The cowl vibrates. I'd recommend a few more hardpoints to mount, or make up a mounting ring. Use a second method to hold the wings on. I drilled the antirotation pins and installed removable springclips. The plane looks DAMN GOOD in the air. The plane hasn't yet WOW'd me. So far I'm more impressed with my 30% Lanier Edge (older bird) or my H9 33% CAP. But I have only had about 6 flights on the YAK so far. For the $$, this is a great plane. But I have found that I have bought several upgrade parts right off. Wheels, screws, tail spring, etc,, etc. Still, I look forward to flying this plane every time I get to the field. Peter
ORIGINAL: Iflyit Sooo... anybody flying one with a DA-50 have a flight report?
I'm flying with a zdz 50, very close in performance. It'll pull out in a hover, nut not with the good authority. Most times I lean it over a bit and fly out that way. I bought a zdz 60 and will convert over after my clubs funfly this weekend. I need a bit more nose weight, but the zdz 50 balanced the plane fairly well. Right on the wing tube. Which is a bit aft of recommended, but it flew well. A tad twitchy on elev (due to CG?) but I expo'd it out. All in all, the 50 will fly it IMAC, but rudder touches in a hover are out of the question. Just can't get on the throttle enough to pull out when you really need it. Not 5 seconds later... Peter

RE: Lanier Yak
It flew today. Two flights. Choked, and the 50 started second flip. range checked great. No more excuses. Taxi'd out, I feel I need some better tailwheel authority. Lined up on the runway. Throttled up, off the ground easily and quickly, climbing straight out. Leveled off, and needed two clicks on up elevator. Flew a few circuits, engine needs a bit of tweeking. Lined up for a landing, smoothe and simple. CG is a bit too far aft as the elevator was a tad twitchy. Once I gathered my heart off the ground, I refuelled, and spent 15 minutes trying to start the thing. A few guys suggested a couple of things, ultimately got it running again when my buddy and ZD toggled the choke a few times as the engine sputtered. Second flight was good too. Pulls to the belly and rolls out in KE. Landed and literally STUCK the landing. The field was wet and the rollout was about 10 feet. I still want to tweek the 50NG a wee bit more before I give up on it. Peter

RE: Lanier Yak
ORIGINAL: iflywhenican Ok guys...I found out yesterday that the landing gear block is made of cheese. It popped just on a gentle landing ending up with the left gear leg folding up under the wing...yep, a hole is in the wing from the wheelpant. The damage of the busted gear block and the winghole can certainly be easily repaired, but I don't have the time now, so the plane is for sale "as is." I don't want to ship it, so if there are any guys close to my area that is interested in a bargain then let me know.
I have an idea about the gear failure, that, although it won't help your plane now, it may help out others. First, does the failure look like it tore the gear plate starting from the middle, or did it just push straight up into the plane? If it started at the middle, my theory would be that it is because of the two-piece landing gear. The stress load is only spread over a small surface area, especially if one wheel touches first. To combat this, I'd suggest sandwiching the gears with a sheet of aircraft ply or aluminum so that you spread the load over the entire landing gear plate, rather than just one half. If the gear pushed straight up into the plane, say, starting at the fuse side, we're into a bigger issue since no amount of sandwiching will stop that kind of load. Thoughts? Peter

RE: Lanier Yak
I'm cutting my cowl open to fit my zdz 50 (small hole to accomodate the plug and cap) as well as my muffler (supersonic pitts). I've had to relieve a decent amount for the muffler, and was just wondering if people would mind posting the under side shot of their cowl cut-outs. Using a zdz 50, I made my standoffs 2.5" exactly, and this keeps the cylinder head about 1" back from the cowl opening lip. For those interested, I have a build thread on the Yak at http://www.rccanada.ca/bb/viewtopic.php?t=21368&highlight= Peter

RE: Lanier Yak
How far back from the bevel (or hinge line) are people drilling for their control horns? I had been trying to get the pivot of the control horn to be dead in line with the hinge line, but you can't do that with these surfaces. Besides, you don't really have to do that anyway.

RE: Lanier Yak
I realized a big mistake by gluing the aileron to the wing PRIOR to drilling the holes for the control horn. My wee drill press doesn't have the reach to get in that deep. So I measured the taper angle to the aileron, halved the angle, cut a 2x4 with that angle to it, predrilled a guide hole, then used the jig to drill the aileron holes perfectly up n' down through the tapered aileron. Now I also realize that I think I drilled the hole too close to the bevel. I went 1/8" back from the beveled edge, but my control horn will impact the wing too early for my liking. I think I ought to have drilled the hole about 5/8" back instead. Peter
ORIGINAL: Maudib I was most concerned that it may stick too far forward and hit the very front edge fo the cowl as I wouldn't cut all the way through the cowl front to relieve for the muffler, I would have moved the engine back 1/2". Even if I had moved the engine back it would have needed some, so I kept the balance-freindly 8" from firewall to prop adapter length. I wouldn't change a thing from this install... a good compromise of balance and cowl cutting...
Can you estimate what you'd have had to move the engine back to negate cutting the cowl for the muffler?
ORIGINAL: rchotdogpilot Sorry about the quality of these pics. I tried to take pics pf the belly, but it really doesn't show much.
WRONG! It shows a lot! It tells me that I'm not going to attempt it, looks like it was too time consuming for the reward. It also looks like it would be difficult to get the colour changes to seal well again, as the belly balsa was a good sealing surface. Kudo's to you for doing it, and saving me the attempt. With the now "standard" tail mods, we've saved almost saved the weight of a servo in the tail. So I'm going to go with a single 5955 back there, stick the engine out about 1" proud of the cowl, see how it balances, then possibly convert to pull-pull if required. I pull-pulled my 30% Lanier EDGE 540T with good, clean, proven results so it ought to be easy.

RE: Lanier Yak
I know I should just go ahead and do wnat I feel is right, but I have a pesky question that has been hounding me. I'm ready to mount the engine and align it with the cowl opening. I measure 6.75" from the firewall to the cowl opening. I also measure 5 3/8" from the engine mounts to the front of the prop hub. This gives me a difference, or minimun required standoff length of 6.75-5.375 - 1.375, or 1 3/8". If I wanted to stick the engine out an extra inch, the standoffs would be 2 3/8" long. So, what I'm getting at is that rchotdog, who used 3" standoffs, must have the engine prop hum sticking proud of the cowl by about 1 5/8". Seems like a lot? Just hoping my math is right... I was going to go for 3/4" proud, so I'd make my stand-offs 2 1/8" long (I'm using a zdz 50 NG as well, so the measurements should be the same...

Test fit the stock tank, was too snug. Fit the wing spar through the tube and found that I had been pushing the FG wing tube in while test fitting the tank, but only slightly. So I clampeda 1.5" alum tube on the top of the tank, and a ply support on the bottom, and slowly tightened the clamps as I heated the tank with my heatgun. Molded a nice, slight dent into the top of the tank, right under the wing tube. Cooled the tank under some cold water, then removed the clamps. Perfect. Edited to add pictures...
