RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
ENGINE QUESTION Looking at the Zenoah has anyone used the newer electronic ignition engine rather than the CDI? Just wondering about reliability? Also, I am down to either a Zenoah or a DA-DA is expensive so not sure I want to spend the cash. This would be a DA-60 Any opinions. Larry

Thanks guys for the response If a 55 is just ok, what is the most common engine people are using. I will tell you that my builds end up a bit on the heavy side cause I don't spare the glue Thanks much for getting back to me Larry

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi all Having about finished my TF P40 kit, 90 sizethinking of moving up to the giant Corsair. I don't have any issue with the kit, although it will take me some time, but just to ask some very basic questions which I am sure are answered here someplace, but as you all know, searching through here is a bit of a B****. Anyway here goes for anyone out there: Removable wings-Are the wings completely removable, or does the saddle stay on the plane? Engine sizewill a 55CC fly this plane? Retracts: Sure do like those Robart electrics. How have they been holding up? Has the TF kit changed much over the years? It has been out a while. I know a fiberglass cowl is available. Can you get by with the plastic one? And finallywhat is the brotherhood all about? Thanks- Larry

RE: Where to mount the ignition box?
Littlera: I have the Seagull Spacewalker 2. The 120 size. We maidened it last week and flew it twice before I ran into some engine issues (not related to heat). I'm using a DLE 20 which fits entirely inside the cowl so I had to extend the exhaust out about 4 inches and also cut some cooling holes in the front (below the prop) and a much larger hole toward the rear of the cowl about where the ignition is mounted. This is to keep the engine itself cool. The engine has gone back under warranty for some fixing!! The plane flies really well, just a little up trim on the elevator. It's a slow go-er much so don't expect to do any real tricks or anythingnice slow lazy 8s and loops are fine. Doesn't roll much at all. Great for a relaxing afternoon. There's a build thread on the forum for the the Seagull version of the plane. Larry

RE: Where to mount the ignition box?
I just finished my Spacewalker 2-I mounted the ignition at the bottom of the area shaped like an L inside the cowl. There is tons of room there and I used some tie wraps and foam under it to keep it in place. Just make sure to keep the exhaust out of the cowl and have plenty of cooling air across the engine-you'll be fine.

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Yeah. We opened the low a bit to make sure we could get fuel into the engine. It being new. Didn't go much in the high side other then checking rpm. I think we gave it less then a quarter turn. The engine runs great for the several minutes in runs. No hesitation no stuttering. Up until the second it just quits Moved everything back to factory setting in an attempt to clear the problem I'm using lawn boy oil mix so we are seeing a small amount of deposit out the exhaust as you would expect It's just kind of wacky I'm pulling the engine and will have the guys at the field take a look at the carb this weekend but still don't know how to eliminate the ignition as a possibility

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Everyone I certainly appreciate the advice and ideas and I know it is kinda tough to troubleshoot without being here Let me say a little more The guys at the field know quite a bit about dle engines but as always can learn more The cowl has never been on the plane other then on the workbench to make the cuts. The guys at the field won't let me fly with cowl until at least two tanks thru the engine. The screw settings on the low side were changed and then changed back the high side was checked and never moved So I don't think overheating is the issue but Can't rule it out. I have been told that the carb can be rotated by folks on this forum and I dont know but suspect the engine wouldn't even run if the carb wasn't doing its job. At least partially. Of course. Who knows for sure The engine runs fine for the time it does and then it just cuts out. Just like I threw the cut out switch Its like No fuel. Or no ignition I think I have eliminated fuel draw out of the tank Wondering if the carb is messed up somehow or the ignition is quoting after working a while Just want to thank everyone for chipping in and trying to help All comments are appreciated Larry

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Yah. I have this 20 on a spacewalker 2 but as usual keep the cowl off for the first couple of tanks Running rpm is less than 8k at full throttle and slightly less than 2k at idle Yes it is a bit rich Is there a way to test the ignition under load? Battery voltage after it quits is just over 5v so I'm pretty sure the battery is doing the job

I'm using a 4 cell Nimh which is 1650 Thought that would be plenty And yes. The plug is wet I eliminated the cut off. Gonna look at the switch too Maybe just a bad ignition?

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Can someone help with a DLE 20 Gremlin this has almost everyone at my field kind of stumped? Get to the field, choke engine, engine fires. Unchoke engine, engine fires!!! Idle for 30 seconds or so and then open throttle up. run throttle up and down, engine responds just fine. Now if I happen to get the plane in the air, it will run for maybe 5-8 minutes then uh oh Dead stick landing-happened twice, plenty of fuel left in the 14 ounce tank. Sometimes, I just pick the plane up after doing all the above keeping it level to place on runway engine dies Very difficult to get engine to start unless we let everything calm down for maybe 10 minutes or so then we go through the same problem. I've pulled the gas tank three times now, checked the plumbing, checked the clunk, redid the plumbing-no change. We pulled the screen on the carb, clean as a whistle. Bypassed the engine cut off still the same issue. New spark plug Twice It's like it either is running out of fuel (but tank is more than half full), or the ignition just stops working after a few minutes. Battery voltage is kept at over 5v and less than 6v. Checked every time. I'm gonna pull the engine off the plane and remove the carb I just don't know what is going on. One last thing, I did reverse this carb, 180 degrees before installing. But like I said, the engine has run for as long as 8 minutes before cutting out so I don't think it is the carb position. Engine bought from VVRC last December. Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks- Larry

RE: Seagull Spacewalker II 120 Arf
Length depends on how long a lead you have on your servos-I only needed 12 inches. Using Hitec servos.

RE: Seagull Spacewalker II 120 Arf
One extension for each aileron unless you decide to mount elevator and rudder servos in rear (that's not in the manual but people have done it). Put the servos where they say, you can balance the plane by moving battery packs aroundso you may need a battery pack extension as well. I didn't. Also suggest a smaller fuel tank if you are going gas. The DLE 20 fits entirely in the cowl, so you'll have to do something with cooling inlet outlet and muffler extension. There is a ton of room inside that cowl to mount ignition as well. I didn't put the battery in there, could have, it made the plane a bit nose heavy so I moved it back a bit. I rotated the carb on the DLE 20 180 degrees to put the throttle on topjust personal preference

Rotating a DLE 20 Carb-Can't get it started
Just a quick question. From a layout standpoint, it was easier for my layout to rotate the carb on a DLE 20 180 degrees. Not having done this before, I basically backed out the carb screws, rotated the carb and screwed it all back together. Is there anything else I should have done? Thanks- Larry

General Question-Gas engine Fits Entirely Inside Cowl
Hi all- I am in the process of mounting a DLE 20 on a Spacewalker II (Seagull 120). The entire engine as well as the muffler fits completely inside this very large cowl. I realize I will need to do something about cooling air and will punch some holes strategically where they won't spoil the plane's looks, but what about the exhaust. Should I get an extension and extend the exhaust so that it is outside the cowl? Is it good enough to just put a hole in the cowl in the general area? Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks- Larry

Hi Guys- Just wondering if anyone would post a pic or two showing how they mounted a DLE 20 on this plane. I intend on using the Dubro engine mount but am having a little difficulty lining things up while making sure that I can access the adjustment screws. I would really appreciate some pics. F.P.E. Gas Engine Questions
Hi All- I just picked up a 21cc FPE engine with ridge ignition and have a couple of questions. I've tried to call SIG but all I get is the message to call during working hours (It is working hours!!) so I don't know what the deal is there. Perhaps someone else can help. I intend on mounting this engine inside a cowl, however there is no choke on the engine. Directions say to open throttle totally, place finger over carb and flip prop a few times, much like the first time of the day for a glow. But, if the engine is in a cowl, what are others doing? Do I have to put a large hole in the cowl to get my finger in there? Or just keep cranking until I can get the engine to pop? Next is in regard to the Ridge ignition. It looks like the coil can be mounted away from the ignition to reduce interference. Does the Ridge generate more interference then other ignitions? Is it worthwhile to switch? Appreciate any response and any other help you can provide on the FPE. BTWI am more used to DLEs. Thanks- Larry

RE: Sig Rascal 110
Mike- Take a look at this. http://shop.dubro.com/products/productdetail/part_number=811/101.0.1.1 I just use 3/16 wire 36 inch long, and bend it in a vise (or around a 2x4) to fit around the inside of the landing gear (all the way around), cut as required, and then use these straps to hold it in place. No straps on top as it will interfere with the fit of the gear to the fuse. I just drill holes for small bolts (with nut of course) to hold it in place. Depending on plane size, you might need 4 of these straps per each leg of the landing gear. I've done this on 60 and 120 size planes and it works fine and strengthens/stiffens the gear bur still gives on a landing. My local hobby shop carries the 3/16 wireyou can probably find it around. Freedog-just use landing gear straps-gotta drill two holes for each strap, but I've been doing that on almost all my models. It works and looks fine

Hi guys- Just got my Giant Big Stik- Looks like there is plenty of wood available internal to the plane to use Robarts Hinge points without removing any covering. Has anyone out there actually done that and if so, how many did you use for each control surface (aileron, flap, elevator, rudder)? Thanks- Larry

RE: Seagull Spacewalker II 120 Arf
Hi guys- Just got the box Kind of interesting made in Vietnam-weird for those of us who grew up in the 60's!!!But have to admit that the kit is very well built, the covering is in excellent shape. A couple of quick questions. This kit uses CA hinges-for this plane perhaps unusual-I would prefer to use Robart hinge points, but other than the ailerons, there doesn't appear to be enough "wood" to hold a Robart. What have you done? Second I am going to be using a DLE engine-I have only seen one pic here showing how the throttle servo was mounted. Anything anyone can add? Any pics would be helpful. Thanks- Larry
