RE: Which Futaba 2.4 Receiver to use?
True on the first count, but not true on resolution. In MultiMode the transmitter provides 2048 resolution, with any receiver in 7CH mode you get 1024 resolution. HS mode just increases the frame, or refresh rate, good for increasing a digital servos ability develop its full holding torque quickly. If a servos transit speed is .11 sec. for 60dg at 6V, then that's as fast as you get[8D] With the planes I fly, and my flying skills, I doubt that I can tell any difference between my models running 2048 (multiMode receivers) and a good ole' R617FS[;)] Pete

RE: Dewalt A123 in Pb starter
A 4 cell A123 pack will be around 13.2V nominal, which in the case of LiFE/A123 is pretty much their working voltage, don't worry about the full charge voltage since it drops down to 3.3V per cell so fast. At 13.2V, the A123's will be like using a fully charged 12V Pb battery, but with less voltage sag under load[8D] Pete

RE: Newbie Servo Questions.
ORIGINAL: BillinIndiana
ORIGINAL: rgburrill  But do make sure they have a connector that fits your receiver.  It is frustrating as all get out if you buy servos with Futaba J connectors but you receiver uses Airtronics connectors.  You can use them if you know how but it's a pain.
Yeah I was wondering about the Servos to Rx compatibility.. I wasn't sure if Servos all had a universal connector or what?
Actually it only takes a few seconds to trim the orientation tab off the Futaba connectors if needed to fit JR/Spektrum and Airtronics receivers. Pete

RE: Airtronics sd-10g-super OR Futaba 8fg
One other important consideration is receiver cost. With Airtronics you're locked into their receivers, with Futaba FASST you have a great selection of FASST compatible receivers to choose from in addition to genuine Futaba offerings. Fr Sky has a very good reputation and these folks are the US distibutor. http://www.alofthobbies.com/radio-gear/futaba-fasst-compatible.html Pete

Here's a cost effective way to convert the 7C to 2.4Ghz. http://www.alofthobbies.com/diy-telemetry-module.html From my perspective it seems a waste to spend money fixing a the RF deck of any xxMhz radio these days. The FrSky stuff has a good reputation. I'm about to start getting some of their Futaba FASST compatible receivers for future projects. Good luck, Pete

RE: Lipo for Speckturm Dx7
The newer generation radios are being designed to use Lipos and/or LiFe. Futaba, Hitec, Airtronics, JR and Spektrum are all going this route. I put a 2500mAh GeForce 2S lipo (specifically made for the 8/12FG) from Value Hobby in my 8FG, price is 1/3rd that of a replacement Nimh. I set my low voltage warning a little higher than Futaba suggests and if I were to put it in the radio case turned on, the radio would shut off at 5.5V, so the battery would not be run dead flat. I get up to 10 hours of run time on a charge without hitting LVW. Charging the battery at the field during lunch or coffee break is more convenient than having to remember to bring the radio in the house and put it on the overnite charger. If you fly lipo powered models and use a good quality balancing charger. The only risk putting a lipo in a transmitter is that you may forget and plug in the stock charger. I put a little square piece of vinyl electrical tape over the charge port as a reminder that I have the lipo in use. The other issue so often mentioned is the danger of running the Lipo dead by leaving the Tx turned on. Sorry, but that's how you render a damaged Lipo safe for disposal. I personally have ruined more than one Lipo by losing a plane for a month or so, or having it held hostage by a large tree for an extended time. Never have I seen a battery puff when slowly discharged to zero, and when discharged to zero a Lipo poses absolutely no fire risk at all. There's a big difference between over discharging a Lipo under a light load in a radio and running one hard at over 10C in an airplane to too low a voltage. Pete

RE: Throttle Spring vs Servo Current
Leaving the spring in play reduces vibration in the whole throttle setup. No matter how little slop there is in the linkage and the servos thew whole mess can vibrate. The spring, by keeping a gentle load on the linkage will reduce the vibration. This is especially important for those who feel they need metal gears in their throttle servos; as they tend to have more slop to begin with and wear much faster than composite gears. Pete

RE: futaba 10cg 14 channel rec.?
The 10C will only give you 8 proportional and two on/off channels. The 8FG gives you to use all 14 channels if your model has functions that work with the on/off channels. Those on/off channels are very useful for ignition kill, smoke and landing gear, so the 12 proportional channels go a long way. The 8FG also has the advantage of upgradable software through an SD card and virtually unlimited model memories. Pete

RE: How do I reverse a servo travel direction
ORIGINAL: skylane42 Nope, the servo mounts so the arm stick out the bottom. I found another servo that was reversed so now I think I can go fly some more.
Yes, but when you mount them, the output shafts should be facing towards the wingtips in a mirror image to provide proper aileron operation. With ailerons the servos both should actually rotate in the same direction. Pete

RE: 20CC: fuel flow, thrust?
I would say that if you were to drink 16oz of water immediately before takeoff with that setup, your flight time would be limited, not by how long the fuel lasted, but how long you'd go before you had to land for a "pit stop"[;)] Seriously, 16oz for a 20cc engine will go a long, long time. I have a 20cc engine (RCGF) in an old Extra 300, I fly at WOT much of the time. The fuel tank is only 10oz and my flight timer is set at 12 Min. and there's plenty left in the tank after that 12 min. flight. Pete OK, I see you're in Brazil. What percentage of Ethanol will you be running. I run the standard 87 octane 10% ethanol blend sold in my area

RE: switch to spectrum equipment
You have not spoken to the manufacturer, since you most likely don't speak Japanese.[;)] You spoke to a tech for the NA distributor. I would give them another call. Your radio should be sent in for this issue. The only way to check your radio without sending it in, is if you can try linking to a new receiver at your local hobby shop, or a friend who has newer FASST receivers. Pete

RE: switch to spectrum equipment
The faults were corrected in production four years ago. If your radio does not exhibit the problem and is able to link to current production receivers, then there's no problem with your radio. Hey, if switching to Spek floats your boat, then get used to having to send your radio back[:)] Pete

RE: switch to spectrum equipment
Nowhere in your post on the support form did you indicate whether you actually have a problem with your unit. Does your 6EX actually fail to link to newer FASST receivers? Reason I ask is that's the indication that you have the ZGUID problem. If you have any receivers bought after late 2008 and they still work, then you don't need to send in your radio. Pete

This is little board from Servo city is as KISS as it gets. http://www.servocity.com/html/servo_power_boards.html Regulators, ugh[:)]. A good pair of LiFe, or better yet A123 packs will hold voltage under the heaviest of loads where a regulator could result in voltage sag if overloaded. Pete

RE: Single Bolt Prop Adapter
Very true. When the prop nut on a single bolt setup is too loose, the pro will slip. When the bolts in the multi bolt setup loosens due to compression of the wood prop, the result is the bolts will fail almost simultaneously with the first bolt to shear off, throwing the entire prop and spinner with no warning. I think they use the multi bolt setup to get you to spend an extra 30 bucks to convert the engine to how it should have been made in the first place[:)] Pete

RE: Charging and balancing Life Batt with taking plane apart at Field?
If you use any one of the 3 wire (DSC) heavy duty switch harnesses, you can balance charge directly though the charge jack. You just need the battery pack to be wired up with a full 3 wire servo lead with the signal lead connected to the node of the two cells. Radical RC has this option on their website. When you do this setup, you do need to remember to cut the signal wire in the switches output lead to the receiver. All my gassers and slimers have this setup. Pete

RE: Brushless motor direct to battery without reciever???
Yes, that's called a variable frequency AC drive. In the late 80's the railroad loco manufacturers switched to VFD drive running 3 phase induction motors which result in lower maintenance costs and longer running time between overhauls than the series wound traction motors pioneered by Sprauge. RE: Brushless motor direct to battery without reciever???
To get the BLDC motor to run on 3 phase AC at 50-60Hz, you'll need a starter motor. A simple permanent magnet motor on AC would have to accelerate to synchronous speed in one revolution, which is impossible, so it will just sit there humming at the line frequency, unless you spin it up close the the sync speed, which is 1800rpm with a 12 stator pole 3 phase motor on 60Hz. RE: Brushless motor direct to battery without reciever???
Good luck trying to get 3 phase AC outta an ESC, and good luck trying to run a BLDC motor on 3 phase AC. The ESC simply sequentially switches the DC current though the 3 winding phases of the motor with the timing being controlled by back EMF from the motor. Pete

RE: electronic throttle
ORIGINAL: rgburrill Even in full size cars the electronic systems (throttle, fuel injection and ignition) are usually mounted on the firewall, not the engine.  Fuel injectors can be considered servos.  And the throttle control is either a servo or an air controlled device that is effectivly a servo.  And yes, vibration is still a big issue as is temperature. As Einstein said many, many years ago - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Well that's not precisely what he said but it sums it up.
Not so with the throttle servo on throttle by wire cars. It's right on the side of the throttle body, directly controlling the butterfly. At least on my Subydoo it is[;)] Pete
