RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Hi Brenner ,those props look nice. Can I assume they are similar weight as the normal carbon props we use?

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Hi Malcolm, I used 2 pieces of stiff cardboard to make the flair and after your post weighed them to discover they are heavier than I would have thought. 25 grams which would of course affect CG. I will balance model better for next trial. Isn't cardboard heavy!

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Hi Brian I tried extending the rudder flare to about 3/4 of the rudder area and my nuance flew really well with it. The only negative change was in knife edge the plane pushed dramatically towards the bottom of the model. When I took it off on the next flight knife edge was quite straight. So it's not for me at the moment.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Hi Brenner, way to go. I didn't know your nats was on the same time as my European champs. Good to hear things are going well. I have 5 flights now in Practice at temperatures over 30°C (hot for us)..all going well so far. Everything, motor, batteries and me running hot that in Ireland.. Best of luck

RE: Nuance
I fly on a grass field that is very bumpy. It is still being developed so hopefully it will be better later in the year. Because of this I have changed the undercarriage to an Oxai set which is not raked back as far and is taller. I am running a Brenner Sharp contra drive so my props are 22 ins. I also don't use spats ever as the risk of damage on landing is too great.

RE: field charging lipos
Hi rudy, I have an extra car battery( 110Ah) in the back of my van wired into the charging circuit of the van through a special unit for that purpose. I can charge a number of packs at 5A with a cell pro 10s at the field if I want extra flights. If the car battery goes low I just start the engine and the voltage instantly goes up.

RE: Nuance
Hi all, getting old is a bummer especially for the sport we do. I bought a pair of sport spex with changeable color lenses that also flip up when I want to look at the radio or in the model. They also have separate plug in prescription lenses which my optician set for flying at 150m. They work really well for golf also as I can't hit a ball much further than that. For very bright days I use grey mirror lenses, for bright but not very sunny I use smoke grey, for evening when the sun is going down I use rose tint and for dark overcast days I have amber lenses. It sounds like a lot of work but it is worthwhile.

RE: Nuance
I changed my undercarriage to an Oxai one from my Aries model. Works really well as it is about 2 inches more forward.

RE: Nuance
Steve Neu says between 120 to 140 F (49 to 60 C) is normal for an F3A plane, so more airflow is the answer. A baffle to bring air to the rear of the motor is working for me with larger opening in the front of the fus.

RE: Nuance
Hey Tony, sounds like you had a superb first secession with your Nuance. The front of my battery is a little forward of the undercarriage mount ( the centre of the battery is exactly at the rear of the mount). Which means my final Cg is at approx 270mm from trailing edge. Obviously the main battery position depends on where the rest of the components are positioned. Did you do an actual reading of the motor temp or are you judging by feel? Mine is running at approx 55 deg C (130 F) . I think this is within the recommended spec.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Brenner, this might explain why the APC props are so quet and they don't use as much power. I tried them for a flight with my oldest TP 5000 (20c. 3rd season) in approx 15 mph wind and when I charged today there was still 36% left .

RE: Anti-Graviton v2
Hi geoffroy, very unusual looking plane but the concept is really interesting. You should mount another undercarriage with wheels on top to complete the symmetry . You could then land inverted!! Nice job though.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Well done Tony for cutting back far enough to have the diameter of the model match the contra. What mounting system are you using? It will fly beautifully!

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Hi Dan, when I set up my contra first I cut back the front of the fus so that there was about 2 mm gap behind the spinner ( zero side thrust and approx .5 down thrust), since then I have upgraded my Contra to a Vlll version which added 3mm to this gap and I also decided to use a Hyde mount for Neu motors which added approx 5mmm In total I now had a gap behind spinner of approx 8 mm. I had 2 choices, one was to move my firewall to suit and second was to put a spacer to cover the gap. I decided I was happy with the position of the firewall and didn't want to move it in case I didn't get it exactly right so I went with the second option which as you can see from the photos was to fill the gap with a ring of carbon fibre painted to suit. It's not perfect but I feel it's adequate for this season. When the model is flying you can't see it.

RE: BJCraft Episode
Tony, thanks for that advice but I a comp this weekend and then 2 international events ( includes European champs for Ireland ) within a month so I will leave well alone for the moment. If it ain't broke as they say. I think it may be a project for next season. I would like to hear how your Nuance with that set up goes.

RE: BJCraft Episode
Tony, your description of yaw stability when exiting manoeuvres ( the plane would point anywhere but straight) is exactly what my Nuance with contra drive was doing until I added the triangular edge to the rudder. I effectively doubled the width of the rudder from 16 mm to 31 mm. Now it is very stable in all axes.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
The noise measurement for Fai is done on the ground before flight, not really to do with noise while flying. The contra noise is very distinctive and hard to describe.

Sounds good Brenner. I am running with the rounds tips and the rear prop 1/4 shorter each end. This is with the mixed props 20 pitch rear and 18 front.

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
Hi all, has anyone done any noise testing as per FAI rules? Particularly over Tarmac ? Is the noise level lower with trimmed shaped tips than the normal tips etc. ? Is noise testing done at your comps in the US ?

RE: P13 Reverse Spins
Malcolm and all, I was doing the negative second half spins and I got scores for them. But when it was pointed out to me I decided it should be done the correct way. At our 4 round comp just gone I averaged 7 for my spins which isn't too bad. I think my problem may be the entry, putting the nose up too high and not quite stalling a wing as the judges would like. I will work on this. The best one can do is minimize the kick back and get the stops right and the judges must ignore the movement backwards as the plane is in a stalled condition.

Hi Malcolm, I have the same set up with my nuance and it does the same in the spins. It would be nice if there is a solution. I would like to know also. Also Malcolm on a different subject , how did you make the carbon fibre insert for between the model and contra?

RE: Contra Rotating Propeller Drive for f3a 2m Pattern Planes
to Dsnow, I am flying a Nuance with contra and my my normal flying rudder throw is 15 degrees and I may reduce that some more. I have put a flared edge on the back of the rudder for the Yaw stability. The rudder was 17mm thick its whole length and the flare I have put on doubles this to 35mm.As you can see from the photos I have tried to make the flare as long as possible to smooth the airflow over it. When I was experimenting with flares I tried different sizes, bigger ,smaller and at one stage I took it of and flew without one, I didn't like the feel of the model without the flare but as you point out maybe I had too much rudder throw at that time. It certainly was more than I am using now. I may never know. My Nuance is flying really well with the Contra and what I am finding is it's easier to get smoothness into a schedule with rolling and speed more controllable. I can keep up with the model.

I do have a 9.89:1 gear set so no problem there. will a set of APC blades to suit the 10.15:1 not be available equivalent to the carbon fibre 22/20 rear and 22/18 front?
