RE: EU-1A
Hey Dan, David’s got it pretty well summed up as far as Big Block RE engines that are in production as of today, just no Jett 120 anymore. I’d have to say for me there is only one choice for an EU-1A today a Jett 1.00 LX turning a APC 12/8 at around 15,000 on the ground. This based on the size and weight (9.5 -10.5+lbs) these birds come out at when finished. You’ll want all the power you can get with this Bird! Well that again based on the flight performance one is looking for though, all the EU-1A’s I’ve seen powered with even the top 60’s (Rossi, YS, OPS) were underpowered in my book. It’s just a huge plane compared to the other designs of the era. Will be keeping an eye on what you do with the finish.
ORIGINAL: SPLIT S Paul, that's a good question regarding power plants. What's out there in rear exhaust anymore? Dan
RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Scott It’s the original tank with the kit. It fits in the 2 front bulkheads perfectly and since its tight working in there I used it as the holder/locator for the header tank wrapped in foam. I ended up boring even more holes in the original tank than in the pic. to the point where it weighed just about as much as some foam; it looked like Swiss cheese when I was done. Quick pick of the Rossi and the header tank system on the stand.Works Great and no bubbles in the line. for those that are interested in the NOVAROSS REX 61F, some info here. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=22498417&postcount=136
ORIGINAL: PatternPilot Paul, Sounds good with the header tank, and main on cg.. should be sweet ... what is the plastic unit with all the holes in it ? Going back to wing joiner, forgot to post this at the time. Here are pics of it all done, used G-flex epoxy for putting it together. One to one by volume or 1.1 to 1 by weight, this epoxy can take flex without cracking like other epoxies once stressed. This was the heavier of the 2 wing joiners so it went into the OS powered Dirty Birdy.

Ben, more pics of the glassing and how it turned out before paint. It came out better than I thought for working with a painted fuse , TAPE is your friend!! I used UFO thin and some accelerator to do the glassing instead of epoxy, very quick and light process. RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Scott, I’m still working out my fuel system on the Test stand, but aiming to put the 16 oz close to the CG if possible with my setup. “HEADER UPDATE” Even after tweaking the stock NovaRossi header, the clearance that I was looking for could not be achieved, so I cut the exhaust flange off a strait header and bent a new pipe and welded it together. Now I’m back in business, just need to clean up the weld and polish her up. Everything good to go as far as the exhaust.

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Ben, the header ends up being too close to the fuse so I needed to tweak it so the pipe could be mounted on the side of the fuse. I put in a balsa block and contoured it for the header fit, then glassed over that. I also contoured the back of the block so you can still fit the stock tank, but I’m using a 2 oz tank in the location of the stock tank with a 16oz behind that. The NovaRossi 61 is a very thirsty engine when running high rpm.
ORIGINAL: Strega1 Hey Paul Thanks for the pics and the info on the DB and Rossi. I'm at a loss on the header. Why did you have to bend it? Was there an obstruction? Does all this grinding weaken the firewal? How are you going to reinforce it and with what? RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Ralph, I use a torch to heat it up until it’s easily bendable. I use metal bars inside and or on the outside of the tubing to make it bend. I use oak hardwood pieces with a bored hole to clamp in the vise as not to mar the header. Here are the two torches that I use; if you’re not careful with the heat from the torches you can melt the aluminum. I have on occasion ruined a header or two using this process ............................
ORIGINAL: Ralph White Paul, How did you go about re-bending the header? I was afraid the header might kink if I tried re-bending it. Ralph White
RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Hey Ben, Here are some pics of how much I ended up grinding and cutting to get the header to fit, I've also had to rebend the header. All worth it for me to get this powerhouse into the Dirty Birdy!
ORIGINAL: Strega1 Hello, Paul I see that you are using the Rossi (Nova) reat exhaust. I'm in the prosces of using the standard Rossi 3 port with a tune muffler from Performance Specialties. So far everything is kosher but I'm using the Bob Brown 120sf composite radial mount and it will fit the firewall. I rather use the 5port RE Rossi as it has a lot more power and I can use a pipe. How bad or how musch did you have to grind or cut the firewall in order to make the header fit. Your help is appriciated. Thanks in advance to you and everyone that has written to me with advice. RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Ben, Jeff, Yes to get the header to fit with clearance you’ll have to go into the side of the fuse. I’m not concerned about the repair work because I’m shooting all the white on this fuse with yellow and doing a black canopy. Here is a pic of the mods I made to the mount just to get the motor back enough before getting into the fuse work.

Chief, I decided to lighten it up a little, saved me another 1.5 oz., now to do the second wing. Back to the shop. Has anyone lightened up the aluminum wing joiner with some holes or is everyone just assembling it as in the manual. I just think its overkill as is and some weight could be saved, just wondering any thoughts on the matter.
