RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF
I scaled the drawings based on the dimensions given so they came out 1:1, from which I cut out the template as shown in the photo. Placing the Sonic unit at the front of the mounting rails creates an offset of roughly 3/8" aft of the Hangar 9 mechanicals. 100-degree deflection of a 6-inch strut results in a forward displacement of 1.06" ... a net gain of about 1" toward the leading edge, still leaving the axle about 3/4" aft of the leading edge. Not perfect, but better than a 90-degree retract ... and regardless, I intended to convert to electric. So this looks like a viable solution. It'd be nice if H9 would produce an E-flite electric unit for their Hellcat ... but I'm not holding my breath. [8|] PJ

RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF
I scaled the Sonic Electric 100-degree retracts from their drawing - the motor was drawn shorter than scale, for example. The enclosed jpeg (which must be enlarged 153% due to RCU compression) is pretty close to exact 1:1 scale. I cut out the templates, and this thing is practically a drop-in. The motor does extend 0.7" in front of the retract housing, but there doesn't appear to be any critical structure (e.g. spar) in front of the existing mechanical retracts. You have about 1" before you'll hit the back of the leading edge. There's a plywood plate in front of the H-9 retracts that must be Dremeled out to accept the retract motor. I do believe I'll order a set... [:D] PJ

Three different books, plus Roaring Glory video ... no landing light. Vewy stwange, given there's the "typical" landing light on other Japanese planes of the same period. Perhaps contact the Planes of Fame folks in Chino, and tell them what you're up to: http://planesoffame.org/ [:)] PJ

Well it's in the books ... Jerry Black narrowly edged out Eric Nessler in Expert. Warren Oliver and Vic Koenig lost planes on Friday afternoon during practice, and Gary Singleton's Intruder was wiped out in a midair on Saturday. As always, a congenial "competition" ... looking forward to having the SPA back at Summit Field in October. [:D] PJ [...and I'm indebted to Duane Wilson for his most helpful coaching.]

No experience with the Wingspan line - other than what they were showing at Perry earlier this year. I have a set of 999 Lados for my 50cc Zero - very robust. Will have to ask Gus at Magnum RC if they're still dealers for the Lado line. [:o] PJ

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
I tried one of those Kavan tanks, and found it fit best with some whittling on the nosegear retract well. I removed the two plywood tank formers, Dremelled the nosegear retract well and plywood mount, installed a 1/8" plywood fueltank deck (full fuselage width) with FG cloth and epoxy mixed with milled fiberglass, and zip-tied the Kavan tank to the plywood deck. I also used a 5/32 DuBro nosegear wire in lieu of the provided one, since it is long enough to be supported by both holes in the engine mount - not just the bottom one. My last mod is shimming the front of the cowl 3/16" to accomodate the extra length of my Saito .82. Should be RTF this week. [;)] PJ

RE: CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread
There is some question in my mind about these heavily weathered A6M's ... showing substantial amounts of aluminum skin beneath the green paint. For example, Tom Tullis' profile artwork in the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces 22 shows an Model 22 A6M3 of the 201st AG (Kokutai) with extensive aluminum exposed beneath green paint, whereas a photo of another A6M3 of the 251st AG showing heavy "weathering" explains that these planes were delivered to the theater in the factory grey-beige paint, where "hastily applied" green paint was used to camouflage the aircraft. Therefore, the exposed areas should be a "caramel" color per the latest research into the A6M: [link=http://modelingmadness.com/earlya6mcolors.htm]Early A6M Colors[/link] I have seen no photos of an operational A6M5 (the CMP variant) with this same degree of "weathering" as found in photos of the A6M3's in New Guinea despite some fanciful profile artwork to the contrary. My best guess would be to follow normal weathering conventions regarding paint fading and chipping. [;)] PJ

I'm mounting a Saito FA-82 on mine, with a 12 oz. Kavan fuel tank. The fuel line is roughly 1/4" below the fuel nipple on the engine, and just a smidge above the center of the carb air intake (as shown). Any thoughts on fuel draw issues before we brace everything in place? [8|] PJ

That did the trick, Krysta - note that there is a discrepancy on page 55 of the 10C manual, which refers to choosing between "CH6&5 or CH7&5", whereas the choices you noted are those presented on the Tx. I also discovered (after my dim light bulb went on) that I needed to reverse both CH1 and CH5 to reverse the servo direction. Thanks for the quick response... [:)] PJ

Change aileron differential slave channel?
I searched the forum for an answer to this one, and came up dry. I want to use the aileron differential function on my 10CAP with a 6-channel Rx. The default, of course, is for Ch 1 and 7 to provide aileron differential function. Is it possible to re-map the default slave channel 7 to, say, channel 5? TIA [;)] PJ

Where the spar brace connects to the outer panel the material is very weak (balsa instead of ply?), and unable to carry much of any load. [:o] PJ

RE: Modifying my T-H Kaos 40
I found the elevation difference between the fuel tank centerline and carb venturi to be too great using a TowerPro .46, causing fuel draw issues in vertical maneuvers. Remedy was to rotate engine 90 degrees. Indeed, a fine-flying plane. Anyone buying one, be sure to clear-coat the fabric seams or watch it peel away due to fuel seepage. [;)] PJ
