RE: F-15A 1/10th Scale
ORIGINAL: Avaiojet I live in a 2D world. Been building in 2D for 51 years. You may want to dig up some modeling mags from the 70's. Plenty of great scale models built without CAD. You may learn a bit also glancing through them. You don't need CAD to build a great scale model and never will. Built without CAD.
Avaiojet...WOW!!!!!! what a work shop.......better that Disneyland.......a builders paradise.....great looking models..........

RE: Top Flite P-47 Engines
I am building this kit now....I plan on building light...fixed gear, flaps, monokote covering.....no extras other than Top Flite cockpit and dummy engine....just clean and simple. My question is....is the Evolution .61NT 2-stroke enough to get this puppy off the ground? I am not looking to build a rocket ship or like johnnycart said " a patternship that looks like a warbird". I would like to use the .61nt that is gathering dust in the closet....keep costs down you know.......

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
My finished Camel. No maiden yet....was going to give it a try today but the winds were already 15+ mph and gusting when I got up early this morning.

RE: Topflite Gold kit P-47
Thanks Terry, that info really helps. I will go with your method. Makes a lot more sense your way. Your build is looking fantastic. I will post pics of my progress eventually. I got the top deck sanded and shaped earlier this evening. I will try and do the the upper forward section Monday evening. Thanks again. [:D]

RE: Topflite Gold kit P-47
According to page 19, step 13 of the instructions, it says to glue a 1-1/4" strip of 3/32" balsa to cockpit sides joining the front deck. Is 1-1/4" accurate? It seems a little wide. If I glue a 1-1/4" piece in, it will have to conform to the razorback curve of CB and then to the roundness of the IP panel. Could someone post pics of this step please? Is it best to glue these in place prior to sheeting the upper forward fuselage tops, as the tops are supposed to overlap the instrument panel 1/8"? I need advice/assistance on this step. I plan on putting in the scale cockpit if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
I finally ran my engine today. Fired up first time and ran nice and smooth. I ran around two tanks thru it.....you know.....it's amazing how well an engine will run when you remember to attach the pressure line to the muffler...go figure. I hope to maiden it in the near future. it has been too darn windy since the end of winter. I do not believe it would fly well in 30-60mph winds.

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
Thanks for the advice and info from everyone. Had time to step away from the Camel, re-think and re-engage. After a little reworking and heeding the advice of those that responded to my post, I was able to shave 13 ounces of dead weight off the plane. I could probalby remove another ounce or three but will wait until the maiden to determine how much more to remove. Here a couple of pics of all the lead before and after removal.

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
Elmshoot, Glacier Girl, and CloudSkipper, thanks for the advice. I thought about moving the battery pack forward into the nose but thought the engine heat would not be good for it. I'll keep an eye on the sticky tape, and like a dope I forgot about a heavy prop nut....I'll see if i can find one. Thanks again folks.

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
Thanks Flyallday. I set the CG at the recommended 4" back from the leading edge. I had to pick the plane up and check the balance with my finger tips as my Great Planes C.G. Machine was too short to lift it. I hope I have the weight/CG right. Anyway...your camel and motor install looks pretty slick.

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
I have an Evolution .61NX installed and I still had to add just over two pounds of weight in the nose. Not pretty but, it works. I have it balanced slightly nose heavy. Also....Has anyone had to balance their Camel laterally? Should I wait until after the first flight to see if it is really necessary? I have tried to balance the plane on the tail skid and the prop shaft but, each time it starts rolling to the right. Should I be overly concerned?

RE: Topflite Gold kit P-47
I picked up a Top Flite Gold Edition P-47 Razorback kit for $50. The plans, 2 parts sheets and the left and right cowl were missing. The tail feathers had been built and sanded. I purchased the missing items from Top Flite for around $75 including shipping. Here is my progess so far. I have started to sheet the upper fuselage half and will post pics of my progress. This is my first RC kit build. I have flown plenty of ARFs and built plenty of the Sterling, Comet and Guillows kits. The Top Flite kit has been pretty easy and straight forward so far. I am pretty amped about building this kit and seeing her fly when done.

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
Tsutomu Mabuchi, in your post you said you cut the ailerons and reinstalled them with PP hinges. If I may ask a silly question, what are PP hinges? Also, could you describe your method of intallation? A picture or two would be great. I am trying to determine the best and easiest way to reinstall the hinges on my Camel. Thank you.

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
I have to say, I am somewhat dissappointed with the Camel. In my opinion the method of mounting the wings is either poorly conceived/designed and/or quality control with parts manufacturing is severely lacking. One wing panel had a slight warp built in, the flying wires seem a little weak and there is no excuse for the manual's numerous errors. This arf has been one big headache when it comes to installing the wings. I have always been a fan of Hangar 9 products and have been impressed by the quality, construction and design of their brand of kits and arfs however; I will think very carefully in the future when it comes to another Hangar 9 purchase. It is a shame one kit could have such a negative impact on my trust in a company I've come to rely on for quality. Had this not been a gift (and I had the receipt) i would have promptly returned it for a refund. I will give and update when I finish building this beast. Mr. Bill Brundle I hope you read this and the other concerns posted here and take it under consideration on future releases. Paul Klinger USAF, Retired Texas

"In the Beginning" Scratch building the Walt Musciano E.V
Here it is...the beginnings of the Walt M. Fokker E.V. 55" WS sport scale. 3.5 - 4.5lbs, 4 ch. .19 to .40 engine. This is my first RC scratch build. I have built plenty of stick and tissue jobs in the past and one scratch built 35" WS rubber powered D-VIII. The plans for this one are from Model Airplane News...June 1985. If anyone has built this particular model sound off....would like to hear your thoughts, ideas, suggestions......anyway...this will be a slow build and slow post as I don't get a lot of time to build.....wish me luck..... Thank you to all the veterans who have served and are serving............. Master Sargeant Paul K., USAF

RE: Plans for Fokker DVI
Charles, I just found this thread.........I have a set of the Model builder DVI plans and was reading over the construction article....to my horror I am missing a page or two from said article. Would you happen to have the construction article on hand??? You could e-mail them or I would be happy to pay for a copy of them......any help would be greatly appreciated....I had planned on starting the build here in the next few days and the missing page(s) kinda put a damper on that...............thanks for your time.. RE: New custom color scheme for ARF - Post your pics here.
After reading the July 2003 issue of Model Air Plane news (Easy ARF Makeouver, page 106) I decided to give it a try, plus my covering had some flaws. I used Krylon spray paint on mine and my flying buddies and I think it looks great.
