RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
ORIGINAL: vertical grimmace Heck, if it were me not only would civilian schemes not be allowed, but I would not allow all of these trainer types without guns either! If it aint firing guns it aint a warbird to me. Yep, sorry no stearman or AT6! We are here to do battle, not train!
One of the American aircraft involved in one of the last dogfights of WW2 Europe was a Piper L-4 Cub. Google it.

RE: Flutter and air balancing
Airbalance = Aerodynamic balance. I am still trying to figure out the OP post where he says he only tack glues the stab on. Its pretty easy to remove the entire stabilizer, I just tacked in in place at the field with a spot of CA just for transportation". Maybe that is why it flutters.

RE: Z-poxy Waxy coating removal
Why do you need to apply a second coat? If it is to try and fill the weave you would be better off using a high build primer. Much easier to sand and should come out lighter.

The subject is labeled as a Rant... In his opinion there should be parts available for ARFs after they have been discontinued. Nothing can be posted to change his mind so we will just have to live with it. What did I miss in the video? There was nothing in that routine that would get a round of applause from me. Wish I could find a video of Bob Hoover doing his routine in a commercial business jet; T-39 Saberliner. What he could do with that thing was amazing.

RE: Modifying Stabilizer Incidence
ORIGINAL: tony0707 Hi Put the plane in a foam plane cradel Put a level on the sab and MAKE the stab read ZERO on the level - (dead center on the bubble)-shim it so it stays there Now put your incidence meter on the wing (radio on if you have the meter placed on the ailerons ) The reading you get on the meter will be your wing incidence ( always with regard to the stab that is ZERO ) In this case the meter sb reading 2.5 degrees positive if correct That means the wing sb 2.5 degrees higher at the leading edge than the trailing edge You need to adjust the wing seat as needed to have the wing at 2.5 degrees positive location if it is not there already Be sure to use your means of fastening you wing downthe incidence must be the same after all is tightened This sb the info you need to know and how to get there REGARDS TONY
If the plans call for both the horizontal stab and wing to be 2.5 degrees and he starts with the stab at zero and sets the wing at 2.5 then his decalage will be off. If both wing and horizontal stab are 2.5 degrees then the decalage is zero. If the builder did not modify the stab and wing mount then it should be close to the 2.5 degrees called for in the plans. If he sets the stab at zero and adjusts the wing for 2.5 then his decalage would be 5 degrees.

RE: Modifying Stabilizer Incidence
Just for the fun of it how about this. Raise the tail of the Cub until the horizontal stab is at 2.5 degrees. Measure the wing incedence. If they match then the builder probably went with the kit parts without modifications in which case I would test fly it before making any changes.

RE: OS91FX dies in flight
ORIGINAL: oldtyme OK..........some very interesting suggestions. As far as overheating goes........it is on a GP Big Stick 60 so it is out in the breeze. I have done the needle valve fix for this engine. Like I said this just happened out of the blue last weekend. Then a thought came to me...............last weekend I was trying to finish up some fuel........not PowerMaster.........but Cool Power that I had had in my shop for 3+ years........at the cost of glow fuel these days, I was trying to milk every bit of fuel I had around. Well I just happened to have a brand new can of PowerMaster I bought a couple of weeks ago so I took that with me and used it instead............plane ran fine. I know that I have read from several different contributors that older fuel worked just fine........I'm telling you that that was all that changed and I flew today trouble free.......no different settings......nothing. I ignored the obvious [:(] Thanks for all the suggestions though........ [:D] Andy
Just started reading this thread and first thing I thought of was bad fuel. Any time a fine running engine suddenly goes sour I replace the glow plug (even if it glows bright on the ni-starter) and then try fresh fuel. If either of those wont solve the problem then its off we go to the tank, fuel line, muffler pressure, trash in the system, sacrafice a cat, stay at a Holiday in......and if nothing else works fly a specktrum radio and when you plant a plane the balky engine is forgotten:)

RE: Removing Robart hinge points question
To late for this but if the hinges were epoxied in they can be removed whole by heating the epoxy. I have used monokote irons on each side of the surface to heat the epoxy and once I used the heat gun. The heat will turn the epoxy back into a liquid.

RE: Servo reverser
The reverser will let you center the servo in relation to the other side but it can introduce throw problems that have to be corrected mechanically. With both elevators centered look at each of the servo horns, they should both be at the same angle in relation to the servo case. If by centering the elevators one of the servo horns is at a right angle and the other is not then the throws will be off. If both servo horns are at the same angle then check the elevator control horns to make sure they are mounted with the clevis pin holes the same distance from the hinge pin centerline. If either elevator control horn is further forward or further aft than the other you will get unequal throw. Remember that a mutli arm servo horn can be rotated to find the arm that come the closest to the angle you need reducing the amount of adjustment required by the servo reverser.

RE: What causes a brownout?
ORIGINAL: DadsToysBG There are a lot of questions to answer. What was the MA of the battery? How many flights on the battery? How new or old were the switch and servo extensions? Have you cycled the battery? On another forum there was a thread on power needs for Gs planes with hi-end servos. This probability doesn't apply to you, but it was found that a 100cc plane at idle was drawing 2 to 2 1/2 amps at idle on the runway and after a hard 3-d flight the power piked at 19amps. We also showed the the standard servo plug caused a 1/2v drop each. On our 2.4 receivers power is everything and must be watched very closely. A 4.8v battery must be recharged when it shows 4.8 because under load it will drop lower. Same goes for 6v. Standard servos won't have the amp draw as the high end ones, but still old wires, old switches can cause a voltage drop before it even gets to the receiver. This apply s to all the 2.4 radio systems. Dennis
Can you provide proof? Maybe a video of the O scope readings? I doubt the 1/2 volt per connection loss is accurate. A 4.8 volt (four cell pack) to alieron servos would have 5 connectors for a servo voltage of 2.3 volts. Flew this setup for years with no problems.

RE: House 0f Balsa 1/12 P51 (.061-.10) build
ORIGINAL: R. Ortiz I am getting ready to build a House of Balsa 1/12 P51 Mustang. It will have three channels (aileron, elevator and throttle), an OS .10, and I would like to cover it with aluminum Monokote. I understand that the top of the fuselage is plastic. Can you cover plastic with Monokote or does it have to be painted? Does anyone have any experience building and flying this airplane? I would greatly appreciate any hints or suggestions that you are willing to share. Thanks
Yes you can monokote the plastic. I have done it several times, make sure the platic is clean, set the iron temp to activate the adhesive but not affect the plastic, take your time and have at it. Do not use the heat gun on the monokote covered plastic as the high heat setting will distort the plastic (remember the plastic was heat molded). Built several of these HOB models back before mini and micro servos and they all flew fine. I remember one HOB P-51 I saw where the owner had installed wing drop tanks with wheels built into them for a landing gear. Looked good in flight.

RE: Prepping for painting
ORIGINAL: RCdude13 I have a quick question about filling the weave in fiberglass. I am considering adding some microballons to the second coat of finishing epoxy resin. My goal is to add less of the epoxy and fill more of the weave with the light microballons. I thought I would squeegee most of the mix off to avoid much sanding. What does everyone think?
I never use a second coat of resin- with or without fillers. Once the resin attaching the cloth to the surface has cured I use a high build primer to fill the weave.

RE: SHOW US YOUR BYRON PLANES
Not sure when this was first built but it was at the Perry swap meet several years ago. I kept walking by it trying to decide if I really wanted it, by the time I talked myself into the purchase.........it was sold. Prior to last years Perry swap meet it showed up here on the RCU marketplace. A couple of emails exchanged with the owner and found that the bird would be at the Perry show. Met up with the owner and discovered that it was the same T-28 I had missed ut on buying. Made the purchase but was unable to get the T-28 in the truck so I rolled it to my table until I could make get it in the truck. The photo is on test flight day, powered with a Zenoah 74 Twin. RE: Question for Futaba pilots
ORIGINAL: smchale Thanks for the input guys. Guess my question wasn't clear enough. I've used JR servos once or twice in the past with my Futaba rx's. What I was more curious was in an installation that is specifically setup to fit jr servos, should I go with the jr servo and my Futaba rx, or go with Futaba servos that are as close as possible to the jr and go through the effort of massaging the install to make them fit?
It is entirely up to you. There is no problem with using JR servos with a Futaba receiver. Just pay attention when plugging them in as you can install them backwards, will not hurt the receiver or servos but they will not operate. If you have suitable Futaba servos on hand I would use them, if you need to purchase the servos then you might want to shop around for the best price. I mostly use Futaba servos but I have had no trouble using JR and Hitec servos that were in aircraft I purchased at swap meets or from flying buddies.

RE: Life or a123 as a receiver pack
I recommend genuine A123 packs with balance leads. I have been using A123 packs for years and have found that they do not need to be balanced charged every time. When I fisrt started using them I would balance charge, fly keeping track of how long I flew, then charge again noting how much of the pack I was using per flight. After a while I began to not balance charge and would just charge thru the normal switch harness. After a month of flying I would balance charge and found that the A123 cells were staying balanced. Now I just balance charge about every other month. I am using an FMA CellPro 4s charger. I looked at one of the hobbyking links and reading the specs it stated "Polyquest 2300mAh 2S1P Lithium Ion~ A123 Receiver Pack . Lithium Ion and A123 are not the same...... The photo shows a pack with very similar markings as an A123 pack but it looks suspiciuos to me. There are several places where you can have custom A123 packs made for you and I would use them before trusting a Hobby King clone. I have purchased from www.RadicalRC.com and from http://www.fromeco.org/categories/Iron_Corps_Extreme_LiFePO4_A123. Just remember A123 and LiFe 2 cell packs can be used without a regulator while Lipo and Li-Ion generally require regulators.
