RE: Gas to Ethenol conversion
You can sure convert it to run on methanol. Its cheap enough @ about $6/gal, and Klotz mixes with it. Ive got several converted weedies both 2 and 4 stroke that run well on the conversion. Heck it basis is wood, should be "green", right?

RE: Prop Position
Hey, no offense taken, thought it was pretty funny! Guess I can learn about this concept in my leisure now as I lost the old Telemaster in the sun on final Sunday. Guess what the first thing to the crash site was-yep the old Homey! Talk about vibration now! lol.

RE: Homelite 42cc Chain Saw
That was a great look-up link also. The saw is not (I cant find it anyway) in the list. What is strange is the UT# is 10560 which when you look it up is for a version of the old XL-12. These saws are in the box stores and are sold in 35cc, 38cc, and 42cc versions. The engine family tags list them all as 42cc, the only difference beside the decals is the bar and chain size. They are completely different from the previous Homey saws sold in the same price ranges, ie. they aint really Homeys. The engine is Chinese, The carb is a clone of a Walbro,as is the ignition (maybe made under agreement). Looks like A great R/C engine as it is one of the most compact 42ccs I have seen. Parts may be out there some where but I havent found them yet.

RE: Prop Position
Yeah you are probably right about the necessity to do this. I just remembered reading about the influence of prop position relative to the dynamic balance of the rotating mass. The prop is the last balancing element. I am sure each engine would be somewhat different, but there was a rule of thumb to follow on positioning it if a starting position was not required. It is on a great running old Homey 30cc. Just balanced a new prop, and was toying with the position issue, I have tried it both ways and it seems a little smoother at 90 degrees. no big thing, just curious.

RE: Prop Position
I use an electric start as this is an older mag engine that is hard if not impossible to hand start. Since prop position for starting is not critical, I would like to place it for best engine balance. I think I remember that the prop lines up with the rod @ TDC, but I am not sure.

Prop Position
Which is the best way to install the prop on the crank to aid balance? Inline with the rod @ TDC or 90 degrees to it. I have known this in the past but have forgotten which way is proper. I am sure this has been asked a zillion times.

RE: Homelite 42cc Chain Saw
Thanks for the link. The 42cc saw in question is not listed by UT#. The closest model I believe is a z3800. The only parts listed are bar and chain and minor parts like fuel line etc. No internal parts. I feel pretty sure it is a throw away. These saws are the latest Homelite offering, and have nothing in common with the last real Homelites as they are foreign designed and produced.

RE: Homelite 42cc Chain Saw
Well I guess Ill bite the bullet and buy a saw. Figured I could break it in in the saw. The only issue is having to mod or fab a muffler. The stock one weighs nearly a pound and I think has a catalyst. Otherwise it converts easily, and fits the Hangar 9 metal mounts as a lot of saw engines do.

Homelite 42cc Chain Saw
Has anyone converted the 42cc chain saw that is selling in the box stores? I have a friend that works at a place that cuts plastic with chainsaws. He brought me 5 with smoked pistons for parts. I believe this is a throw away as I can find no parts available. I have converted a dead engine, so all I have to do is apply the parts to a good engine. Before I spend $109.00 for a new one, I was just wondering if anyone is using one? It is definately of foreign origin. The great thing is that it is very compact for 42ccs.

RE: Worth the trade? Tmaxx for belt cp carbon edition?
Its too bad you dont want to go glow. A .30 is way easier to learn to fly than a 450. I started with a Belt, worked through a Trex 450 and finally landed a good deal on an old Rappy .30. If I had known what the .30 was like I could have cut the learning curve way short. I routinely see .30 helis go RTF in the $400.00 range. I now fly .60 and .90 birds, they are easier than the .30!

RE: How close is Real Flight G3.5's AxeCP?
I must have a zillion hrs. on my 3.5. It has been the best 200 bucks I have spent in the hobby. It is realistic enough that if you can do it very well on the sim, you can do it with the heli (or plank) once you work up your courage to try it. If is is boring on the sim, it is probably time to try it. 4.5 is out now and is even better. I have not had exp. with other sims, but Real Flight is great. For the most part the sim flying is very close to real life. Some models are more realistic than others but all in all its pretty real.

RE: How close is Real Flight G3.5's AxeCP?
I actually thought the AXE flew pretty well on the sim. I fooled around with the receiver/gyro /speed control until I had mine flying ok. It never flew great but ok. I have a friend that actually did the gyro conversion in the manual with a GY-240, and it still flew about the same as mine. Hang in there and you can probably do ok with it. After you get it adjusted and flying when you notice the tail start to blow out its telling you the battery is low and to land soon. A motor driven tail aint the greatest design! However I have to say I learned a lot from the old AXE!

RE: Raptor 30 into a 90!!
The 30-50 is basically the same heli, as are the 60-90. The 30/50 are small frame helis while the 60/90 are large frame. They are in no wise similar. You cant in practical reality do what you are thinking about.

Check out the Maverick CNC 30 fan, I think they are slightly cheaper, and have the place for the gov. magnets. I have then on all of my 50s (the 50 size) and thet work great.

RE: How close is Real Flight G3.5's AxeCP?
The AXE on 3.5 flys better than the actual heli. (It is the older version of the Axe). If the heli flew like the sim I would still have mine. The Bell 47 on 3.5 I believe is "ficticious" If you look at the head it has fly ball weights like the real heli instead if paddles like a model.

RE: AVGAS... Anyone with experience???
Sounds like a good idea. We have been having carb problems involving the diaphrams also. Seems related to the ethanol in our fuel. it has also stricken the commercial equipment users in our area. The metering diaphram especially. I have been experimenting with removing the ethanol. The remaining "gas" seems to run well statically. Weather has prevented a flying test. I expect to have to add octane booster to the mix, when under the load of flying. I became concerned about the fuel tanks being attacked (fiberglass) in my Avid Flyer due to the ethanol. I can switch to avgas, but would prefer to stick with car fuel if possible.

RE: 4 cycle engines....
Hey man, easy on my cheap Hitec servo. Actually 5% more gain had it right. The 4 stroke Rappy flies fairly well and has no running issues. I dont know why but it does not siphon fuel, may be the header tank. Running is flawless, will Idle all day with good transition and has clean top end. It is a stock 49bb .30 with .50 gearing. has a top head speed of 1630 which computes to 14200+ engine rpm. I have been told by a long time fourstroker that these .52 engines are purposely underated by the manufacturers and indeed they are capable of 14000+ rpms. It has run two 20min timed sessions on one tank and had a full header a a little left in the main. It aint no home sick angel but has reasonable climb authority. All in all I am very pleased with my experiment it has worked very well from the first flight.

I doubt MTD owns Homelite as we were not allowed to do any warranty work on the Homey/Ryobi (we are an MTD dealer).

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?
Guys if the weedy is a yellow boom Ryobi it is really a Homey 30cc. Black boom weedy is a true Ryobi, produced by MTD. The Homey/Ryobi (atleast the one I have) must be a newer design because the cylinder has more fins and the porting is a little different. Mine spins an 18x6 @ 7000 and unlike my older Homey 30cc, will easily hand start.

RE: Spindle shaft compatibility
They are compatible below the swash plate, swash and head assembly are different, I think the grips interchange not sure about the rest, but the head is a completely different design (flybar under the blades).

RE: new to the raptor
Fly the TT.39 I learned on a .30 with one and it never let me down. It is particular about its tuning, but once you get that figured it will run ok. Wait til you are ready then convert the .30 to a .50 with an OS Hyper. Get in your local club, an expericened heli flyer will greatly flatten your learning curve! Keep on with the sim, I found the old Impala to be a good rep of the Rappy. BTW I learned to fly full scale at the Deland airport, more years ago than I care to remember, and kept my planes there when I lived in Daytona. Good luck!
