RE: Unofficial
Hi Guys I'm new here & got too tired after reading 30 pages - so humour me please. Firstly I really have to compliment you on your technical proficiency. I'm really impressed. REALY IMPORESSED ! One of my early ski boats had a Vicalen (sic maybe ?) jet pump which we replaced with a Doen. The 16ft jet boat was fun but my later boat was a 21ft Mastercraft X Star which used half the fuel, ran at half the RPM, made 1/4 the noise, wore out 1/10th as many engines and went 20% faster. If you're not running a (full sized) boat in puddles then jets don't make much sense. Shallow Kiwi rivers though are the jet boat domain - till the pump sucks up gravel like my Vicalen did & destroys the impeller. Now, to the point - I've got two HobbyKing motors ; PRODUCT ID: S2445-3890 and PRODUCT ID: NTM2836-3000 Which one do I run in one of these modified NQD 757 pumps (- is this the one to use ?) & on how many cells please ?

RE: Brushed motor equivalent size
Now you're talking critical specs that are useful for me. Quoting you "rule of thumb" is ~3W/g " Can you give me a W/g figure for Brushed 12V motors please Doc ?

RE: Brushed motor equivalent size
Thanks Doc. Reading the reviews I see that guys are getting 1000W on 4s out of this. Overkill maybe for my application.

RE: Brushed motor equivalent size
It's a pity that Hobby King doesn't keep good stock levels of brushless inrunners because there's lots in their list for around $20. Maybe I can use an outrunner. Do outrunners generally have more power/torque for their size & weight ?

RE: Brushed motor equivalent size
Cool. Thanks. I was hoping that 350 - 400W would be enough.

RE: Brushed motor equivalent size
Thanks Doc. How many watt do you think the Mabuci RS550 is good for at it's max 12V ? And is the torque a consideration here ? How does torque compare generally on a Brushless to a Brushed motor of equivalent KV and A ? You can probably tell from my questions that I don't understand this technology.

Brushed motor equivalent size
I'm designing an electric start for a 40cc gas (petrol) engine and a brushed Mabuci RS550 is used to start slightly smaller engines so it's my starting point. This is the standard RS550 spec ; http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/p/5152-RS2-550-Motor-12V.aspx And another similar RS550. I'm not sure what PC/VC stands for ? ; http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/cgi-bin/catalog/e_catalog.cgi?CAT_ID=rs_550pcvc I'm trying to find out what would be a similar Power & torque in a Brushless inrunner. I'll adjust my gear ratio to match the RPM of the brushless. Am I correct in saying that Brushless motors have lots more power & torque for the same physical size & weight ? So is there a (say) 25mm or 28mm brushless inrunner with similar power/torque to RS550 please even if the Kv is very different ?

RE: Stripped Gears HK600GT - Help Please
I re-set my throttle curves & had 3 successful flights today. No problems switching to idle-up now that there's no RPM change when I switch. On the 4th flight I gently opened the throttle to spool up and ZIIIIIIIPPPPP. Another main gear stripped ! Didn't get to idle-up. This motor's balls must be too big or the Soft Start ain't softly enough. Turnigy T600 1400Kv - 11t pinion today (previously also stripping gears with 12t pinion) - 6S. ESC is Turnigy dlux SBEC (Hobby King Item PRODUCT ID: TGY_DEL100A)

RE: Stripped Gears HK600GT - Help Please
Thanks Tinkman. I used the curves straight out of the Trex600 manual & I understand their function. Was flying nitro Hirobos with invert switch 25 years ago. Just getting used to 3D & the changes with electric. Back then I'd start the engine, step back, switch to Idle-up & fly. The problem seems to be that I hadn't fully spooled up before switching to Idle-up. I'll move the throttle/collective to mid stick in future before switching.

Stripped Gears HK600GT - Help Please
Second time now. First time I made the mistake of flipping to Idle-up with stationary rotors & the pinion chewed the teeth off the Hobby King main gear. I had Idle Up set to 70% with the stick down as per the Trex600 manual & decided that it may have been too much & caused the first strippage. Since then I've spun the rotors up a few hundred RPM on the ground before flipping to Idle-up now set at low throttle reduced to 40%. Yesterday I did this & again stripped another HK main bear but this time the pinion stripped as well ! I'm running a 12T Revco 'Hard One' Pinion (maybe they should call it the 'Brittle one") on a Turnigy 600 4030 1400Kv motor with 6 cells. HELP PLEASE. What am I doing wrong ? I've just tried to fit a Trex600 main gear but the hub recess is about 1/2mm too small for the HK Auto Clutch Bearing Body Flange.

Thanks 'Pipe' - Do you have a source for the Roswell 'Brain' ? Can I build the electronics speed controller/gyro unit ?

other makes of flying saucers like draganfly.
I've been out of the hobby for a while now & have lost touch. Can anybody provide links to manufacturers of other types of R/C electric flying saucer models similar to 'Draganfly'. Particulartly interested in Asian manufacturers & suppliers. I have relatives traveling there at this moment. Also small electric conventional R/C Helis. - thanks.
