RE: Supplies dwindling.....
foodstick, You are correct about the Elmers. I'm not sure why I thought it was Pro Bond, but I just checked a new bottle I just bought. It is Ultimate. And I also babysit the glue until it does its thing. However, I've found that if you let it swell out the hinge holes, it is pretty easy to trim away with an X-acto blade. But that is certainly not the best procedure, just someting to remember if it swells after you walk away from the project for awhile and come back to find it wasn't completely cured. Thanks for the correction about the Elmers.

RE: Supplies dwindling.....
I've never used "hinge glue", but I've had good success with canopy glue, Gorilla glue, and Elmer's Pro Bond (same as Gorilla glue). So far (30+ years) I've not had a hinge failure. Had every thing else fail, but so far no hinge problems. Paul

RE: Painting over Monokote
Tom, I've had good luck painting Monokote. I scuff the gloss away using a scrubbing pad (Scotch Brite type) and then cleaning well with alcohol or acetone. I then spray a very thin coat of auto primer and let it dry for a day. Then use thin coats of paint. I think the secret is the primer. It sticks to the Monokote better than just paint. Use caution removing the masking tape. Go slow and be prepared to use an x-acto blade if needed to cut the paint edge from the tape. If you go too fast, you might start a lift along the tape edge and it's a bugger to fix. The edge along the tape doesn't get scuffed well enough for the primer to stick well. Good luck.

RE: monokote change
sco215, They had to change due to EPA restrictions. The same thing happened to Super Coverite and K&B epoxy. There's a lot of history about this on a thread that ran a few weeks ago. You might search for it. Lot's of good info there.

RE: Meaning of TOC
Sport Pilot, Good question. I know we've strayed a little from the thread, but to answer your question, TCAS (onboard collision avoidance systems) has made a lot of pilots lazy about looking for traffic. Plus, at the higher flight altitudes, only aircraft under radar control "should" be up there. But, what if they had met another airplane with a flight crew as inattentive as they were? Air traffic control would have been helpless to keep them separated. Why they didn't hear the contollers calling them is beyond me. I know of an airline pilot who was given some "time off" years ago when a passenger got a brief look into the cockpit as the fight attendant entered. He had put a navigation chart over a small section of the wind shield to block the sun. That's what sunglasses are for. Think about how the show teams in close formation deal with the sun. Not by covering a part of the canopy! They move their eyes to a different location on the lead aircraft.

RE: Meaning of TOC
Rock, Yes the paper computer flight plans are a thing of the past, but the same info and acronyms are presented to the pilots on the cockpit screens and flight plan computer screens. That's the info that the guys missed enroute to MSP. There are numerous visual warnings presented to the pilots if they miss such things as SOD. But, if you can't see the screens, you can't see the warnings. Personal lap top computers opened in your lap will block your view of the cockpit screens. As I said, Big Mistake!!

Hey Rock, On my computer flight plans SOD = Start Of Descent, something a certain flight crew recently overlooked enroute to MSP. Big mistake!!

RE: Primer for Nelson Hobbies' paint?
David, To add to my previous post, I've had good success using water based MinnWax under Nelson's paint. Nitrate dope also works well. You might test a sample using either of these products with talcum powder added as a filler. I've never tried this so I'd be concerned about the Nelson's sticking to the talcum. But, it might be worth a try, on a sample, not your plane. Paul

RE: Primer for Nelson Hobbies' paint?
David, Nelson's paint does not "breathe" after it cures. DO NOT use an evaporative type primer. Use a water based or epoxy primer. Nelson says that some folks have had good luck with Rustoleum auto primer. I can tell you that it does not work. The paint will lift off the primer in large sections. It looks good, but will lift in an area. Over time the separation will grow and pretty soon you will have a large area of paint lifting from the primer. Impossible to fix because as you try to feather sand the area, more paint will lift. I've never had any luck except using Nelson's primer. You might try an epoxy primer from the auto paint store, but the cost may be prohibitive. It's a great product, but you must use the correct primer. Good luck. Paul

RE: incidence
Sparky, If you able, try mixing your throttle to the elevator. I fly a quarter scale Gee Bee that I've had to mix the throttle to the elevator and rudder. Really helped tame the beast on take off and go around's. Paul

RE: incidence
Sparky, Is there any way you could shorten the forward attach points of the upper wing struts? If you could get the top wing to a slightly less positive incidence than the bottom wing, you might solve much of the problem. I built a RTC Giant Aeromaster that had the struts and attach points pre-set by the manufacturer. All incidences checked per the instructions, but it required a lot of nose down trim to fly. I shimmed the upper wing to reduce the incidence by 1 degree and solved the problem. If all else fails, try drooping all ailerons a couple of degrees. This will move the center of lift back a little on the wings and help lower the nose. Good luck. Paul

RE: incidence
Sparky, Here's the way I would do it. It's not going to be exact, but it's pretty close. First, if your radio has a "sub-trim" feature, use that to move the servo into a postion that will allow you to trim the plane for level flight. Then, assuming the stabilizer and elevator have about the same surface area, measure the angle of deflection of the elevator used for level flight. Reposition the stabilizer to 1/2 the elevator deflection. This should allow you to fly level with the elevator and stabilizer in trim. Good luck. Paul

RE: Have ya seen Rare Bear's new paint scheme? *drool*
Deadeye, Royal made a .60 sized kit many years ago. You might find one on e-bay, but I'd be surprised if anyone would be willing to sell one. Zirolli sells the plans and I think maybe fiberglass fuselage. I have the plans and I still plan to build one some day. It's always been one of my favorite piston aircraft. Paul

RE: Moving 40 years of scale models?
I've done exactly what you're up against. Not fun!!! I crated or secured my models, engines, and support equipment and personally moved them in an enclosed trailer. It took weeks to get everything secured and placed in the trailer (along with personal items such as family photos, computer, etc.). But, everything moved without damage. I let the moving company pack and ship my tools, some of which of course were "lost" during the move. Be sure you have good documentation (photos) for every item they pack. You'll need it to make a claim with the moving company. Unpack as soon as you get to your destination. The movers are betting that you won't find anything missing until it's too late to make a claim. I wish you good luck. It's a very stressful experience. Paul

RE: Need help with Astro Hog crash cause
Dave, You might check the engine thrust line. I once saw an experienced pilot maiden a friends Hog Bipe. The friend had followed the plans which he said showed no offset thrust. The plane was almost uncontrollable at more than 1/2 throttle even with full right rudder. After offsetting the thrust a couple of degrees, it flew well. pmw

RE: Maybe a silly question: side thrust - why we need it ?
All of the above is correct. But to answer you question about why some planes don't have the offset, if you fly the plane inverted, the offsets will work in the wrong direction. That's why most aerobatic planes have no thrust offsets. The pilot compensates for the directional issues with the radio inputs. Takes a lot of subtle stick work from a proficient acro pilot to keep the maneuver smooth and straight.

RE: Rustoleum Universal Paint
Edwin, I did not know that. That might open a whole new world for me because I was never able to get a nice color in the brush can colors. If they can create a color, I would be able to use my spray equipment and get a much better spray pattern than the spray can. Thanks for the info. pmw
