RE: M.A.N. Air Age plans sale
That is odd, I ordered 5 plans during that sale time and got my plans around four to six weeks after I placed the order.

Both fairings are finished now. Not perfect but close enough to be happy for the results. Proceeding to the cowl now.

RE: How many wing bolts?
ORIGINAL: KW_Counter The purpose of using nylon bolts is so they will pop off in a crash. The separation of main parts may lessen the damage on one or both of them. I would go with the designers original plans. Good Luck, KW_Counter
I had a 40 size plane with one bolt. It broke while flying. I still have the one good set of wings. The fuse came down as a misile, the engine broke on impact. The battery pack also broke, and the receiver was also damaged. If I had to build the airplane again, I will build it with two bolts. Pedro

RE: Want to build my first kit
Spridal, Good selection on the Contender. But wait, there are other models you can also take a look, the Great Plane Dazzler and Tower Hobbies Uproar (Pretty much same airplane). They are easy to build, very fun to fly and can be built in about two weekends. But the Contender is really a good choice. The overall performance of engine, airplane, and prop depends on how straight and light you build the model. Besides wood itself, the mayor culprits for weight are adhesives (CA, Epoxy, Wood Glue), electronics, and hardware. The Contender with an estimated weight of 6 to 6.5 lbs, I would go with the high end engine, a 0.52 to 0.61 2-strokes or 0.70 4-strokes. BTW, I have a Dazzler and its final weight is 5 lbs and with a 0.46 w/11x5 APC prop has unlimited vertical. In servos, you can save one easy OZ by using a micro or mini servo for throttle. Another easy OZ is in the tires. Go easy on the epoxy and CA. my 2 cents, Pedro

I was the only builder left in that club and I picked them all up for my opening bid. ....
Gene, YOU ARE SO BLESSED!!! Pedro

RE: Want to build my first kit
ORIGINAL: Spridal I took a look at the Contender and I really like it. However, I'm not sure it if is something that a newbie like me can tackle.
The differences of building between the contender and 4* are the stab, fin, elevators, turttle deck, and nose. The contender also has optional flaps though. The rest of the building process is pretty much standard. Both are excellent models for 2nd airplane flying. If you think the contender would be too much challenge for you, then go for what you feel more suitable. If you like it, I am sure you will go for a more challenging kit next time. I agree with Artic, the ultrasport is too much for a first kit. Pedro

RE: Rattle Can Painting Advice
ORIGINAL: halfmoa
ORIGINAL: Roby Whenever I use a rattle can to spray anything. I always put it into a bucket of very hot water for 10 minutes prior to spraying. It seems to make the paint flow better. Regards, Roby
That's a really, really good idea!
Yes, good idea. However, it is a risk to increase the internal pressure in the container without knowing how much pressure the container withstands. Remember, SAFETY FIRST. Pedro

RE: Want to build my first kit
Spridal, See if you can download the instruction manuals and peruse the building process of each model that catches your attention. You can see if your crafting skills will be challenged enough for you to stay and finish the building. The point is if the building is too complicated for your skills as of today, you might end up with an incomplete build and loose your interest in building. My 2 cents. Pedro

RE: TF Spitfire build
Today I was able to make another FG fairing for the fuse. The epoxy should be cured by tomorrow and will proceed to glue it in place. I also made the bumps for the wings in FG. Next week I will create the plug for the cowl. At the same time, I will patch the fuse for dings and will get it ready for final sanding and glassing.

RE: First Time Kit Builder: Project GP Super Decathalon
ORIGINAL: Avistarpilot ... How do you stay away from the snap on landing? Keep your airspeed up and ''fly'' it onto the runway?
Yes, you don't cut throttle while you are in approaching. You have two to four clicks on the throttle stick to keep some speed. It really depends on your link adjustment. Then you fly until the wheels touch ground or you are less than 6 inches from ground. A good tip is to practice very low speed at high altitud and watch how the plane stalls. You will get the right feeling of how many stick clicks you need to keep the plane flying at a reasonable slow speed for landing.

RE: Whats up with kits?
Last week I was laughing because someone auctioned a model that it is supposed to be discontinued. It sold for over $280.00 including shipping. When in reality, I can order the same kit today from the manufacturer website for $230.00 with free shipping. [X(] Some people become so engaged in the bidding process that they loose track of reality.

RE: First Time Kit Builder: Project GP Super Decathalon
Avistar, Welcome to building model airplanes. I am impress with your progress. You are definitely in the right track. A way to keep the bird light is to be easy on the glue, specially CA and epoxy. Another trick is to replace some heavy wood with light soft wood. But, that increases the cost and it might not be under your consideration on your first build. Another way is to increase or add lightening holes in different parts of the fuselage. How many and how large? It depends on the structure of the airplane. Keep up the good work!!! We are all here to help. Pedro

RE: TF Spitfire build
I made my mind over the weekend. If this build has taken me over two years, I will not ruin it for one fairing. Therefore, last night I took the dremel (cutter and sander) and removed the fairing. Now, I need to make another FG fairing. For its installation, I will make some measurements and will mark its correct placement to make my spitfire symmetric and good looking. [:D] The best is to make of this mistake a GOOD learned lesson. [:)]

RE: TF Spitfire build
Just when I was so happy for the look of the side I did this afternoon, I found out that I did not install the fairings at the same height. The other side is higher in the back of the fuselage [:@]. Another big lesson for not paying attention to the building. The gap is larger than the side I made today. If I remove the fairing to make the correction, I am sure the fuselage will suffer due to the epoxy used for glueing the fairing. It will not look symetric if I leave it like it is. [:o]. Big decision time.

RE: TF Spitfire build
After some thought, I solved the problem of the back lower fairing balsa pieces. I used 1/8" piece of balsa instead of 1/16". I installed it flat and filled in the upper gap with soft-light balsa and a little of epoxy with microballons. I am pleased with the result after 2-hour work. Now need to do the other side.

RE: TF Spitfire build
WOW, It's been almost one year since I stopped working on my SF. Well, I am coming back to the build at a slow steady pace. I glued the FG fairings to the fuselage. Now, I wonder how to install the bottom part of the fairing at the back of the wings. I tryed the 1/16 balsa as recommended but I keep cracking the balsa because the way I am installing the piece creates a twist in the balsa. Also, I am trying with the balsa grain crossed, 90° of fuselage. Or maybe I need to wet the balsa first to make it more flexible. Am I doing this right? How did you do yours? Pedro
