RE: Dumas air boat questions
The BSB was built/designed with a lot of upthrust on the engine. Because this is a tunnel hull, this was done to keep the bow down and not let the hull blow over so easily. With the power available in the days the hull was designed, it worked ok. But by today's engine standards, the more powerful engines will dig the bow into the water. An option may be to try and reduce the amount of up-angle built into the mount if possible, instead of trying to counteract it by adding shims. If the pylon mount is bolted to the hull, unbolt it and sand down the front of the pylon feet so the angle of attack is reduced, then bolt it back down. If the mount is glued in place, try to cut out the plate the engine is bolted to, and re-glue it in place at a lesser angle, or neutral angle. Just a couple things to try.

Being from the UK, I know you guys run different types of hulls as we do here in the states. Is this hull a Multi style hull? Can you post a pic or two?

RE: Swamp Buggy woes
Being a tunnel hull, you may want to try a turn fin (as long as it will only be run on water). To make it work equally to turn in both directions, mount it to the hull bottom, about 1/3 the hull length from the transom (or...slightly behing the cog). Make it, so when you look at the hull from the side all you can see is a portion of the fin about 1/2" tall and about 2" long. The actual size will be bigger due to part of it not sticking out below the hull bottom. A simple way to make one would be to bend a piece of brass strip into an 'L' shape and screw it into the hull bottom.

RE: how about a ducted fan airboat
There were plans for one published back in 1984 ??? in an issue of Flying Models magazine by Bob Aberle. At the time, I think it was an AX40 fan (very early in the DF scene). He had some positive results. With today's available power output and DF design, the improvement should be great for an airboat. I would suggest trying to track down the article and starting from there. If you go through some of the older threads here, you should be able to find what issue it was published in, as I have posted it before, but my memory is drawing a blank at the moment.......

RE: so, airboats seem cool. how do i make one
Areas need to be cut out into the foam to allow wooden members to be glued into the foam for the most strength. This way the piece will also be flush with the surface of the foam. It could be cut out by hand, but a much easier way is to use a router. Dadaddyro has some pics of this process at www.rcairboats.com that should answer a lot of questions.

RE: How much is it worth?
A lot will depend on the brand of engine, engine size, brand of radio as well as appearance and integrety. It could go for $100 or you could get $200 for it. More depends on you want out of it.

RE: please help. twisted hull
Being that the structure in an enclosed structure, If it developed a warp that severe over a very extended period of time, you won't get it out. Try running it the way it is and see what it does. If it stinks....you can build a better hull for about $20 bucks of foam and epoxy with a bit of ply thrown in [:D]

Around 30% is a good place to start. Depending on the hull style, it could go as far as 35%.

RE: First build need a little advise
Good looking hull you have there. And by the looks of your construction pictures, it's very well made. I would also suggest trying a different size prop. A 19 turn motor sould be able to swing one of pretty good size. But I doubbt it will work with your current mount set-up. But you could easily modify it to be a bit taller to be able to swing a bigger prop.

Try this... Hobbico MasterMask , part #HCAR3410 Bob Dively Liquid Masking Film, #DIVR3000, DIVR3010, DIVR3020 Parma 701 Liquid mask, PARR5000 Those are all Tower Hobbies stock Numbers There are also other makers of the stuff here in the US. These are just a few...... There are very few LHS that I have gone into over the years that DOES NOT carry one brand or another. Just ask for liquid masking film. If the guy behind the counter doesn't know what you are talking about, then they need to find a job better suited to them and their hobby experiences.....[;)]

RE: motor mounts
Servo's will come included with the radio system when purchased. As far as a rudder and other components, there are no commercially available parts for munc of the stuff we use. Some small items are used from the model airplane community while the vast majority of parts are home made. The motor pylon mounts dadaddyro mentioned are very good and are used by two different manufacturers for their kit boats (AquaCraft and Dane's Hobbies). Besides the nylon mopunts, you will have to make or purchase the wooden platform that the engine sits on. This is also anAquaCraft item that can be purchased from Tower Hobbies. If you go to the listing for thr Air Force, you can get to a page that lists replacement parts for this particular hull that could be used for a hull of your own design.

A clear polyurethane varnish will also work to preserve decals (stickers) on the hull, as well as giving an added fuel-proofing coat to the paint job.

RE: First airboat
If you click on the GALLERY button at the bottom of this post, you can see several of my 1/2A airboats. They all use non-throttled engines. One servo is all that is needed for rudder control so the radio system is light. I also use 2/3a nicad battery packs for the receiver instead of the 4-cell AA holders that the radios come with. Much lighter and smaller. All my 1/2A hulls are of all built up balsa construction and are covered in Monokote airplane covering. You can see a sequence of pics of my latest hull at the following link.... http://rcairboats.net/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=26 This is not a typical hull....an experiment in design, but a hull of similar size and conventional shape like those posted in the gallery is an easy build. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, but be sure to look at the pictures first, as they will answer a lot of your questions by themselves. For size, these are all in the range of 18" long and 8" wide. (approx 450mm x 200mm)

You will not need a whole lot. When it comes to surfacing or glassing, a little goes a long way. Dadaddyro has a good explanation on how to...........here............... http://rcairboats.net/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=49

RE: Big Ugly Red
Is that an MDS on there??? I agree with Keith's comment........ Where the horn is located will put stress on the rudder and servo and also limit the throw to the rudder. By moving the horn closer to the rudders pivot point, the rudder will be more free and stress free. Line up the holes on the arm with the pivot point and it will work a lot better. Here is a pic to show what I mean.........

RE: Do you need to cover blue board?
I go along with dadaddyro. Glassing it over adds at least 200% more strength to the hull. In essence, forming a shell. For a low powered hull you may have no problems with durability. But then there is always the ever present dings and dangs that happen just in handling the hull that can surprisingly damage the hull to a point where it has weak spots. I'd hate to see a hull disintergrate on the water going wide open.
