I used the Braincube system. The best thing is to give (I think his name is Oliver) a call -very helpfull. In addition to what he will supply you will need: 1. Loads of twin cable wiring to get for the wing tip lights and fin etc. (I got this from Pegasus Models on a reel) 2. Futaba/ JR plug kit and crimps 3. 4.8v Nicad pack Essentiially the controller which is about 100mm long/ 10mm thick/ 30mm wide plugs into the RX. You control the on/ off switching of the landing lights via switch on thr RX (I have done this via Landing Condition on my RX). You can config the way the lights work from the controller. The Braincube landing lights are really neat and fit directly into the recess in the cowl. For me the biggest pain was getting all the cabling in. I probably made work for my self by routing a hard balsa strip to create a hidden channel up the LE of the fin and then passing the cable up this. I dug out the top of the fin to fit the Braincube LED light and its little mounting board. Because the white on the fin did not match the white abs shroud that supports the fin I covered it in Solaryx and sprayed it with some white car spray. In this way I covered up all of the mods to the fin. Cheers

Mine is far from perfect. Perhaps you could cut out a larger paet and glue in a clear section? In this way you would not need to shape a new one? I presume that I am right that one cannot use a 2.4 FPV with 2.4 TX/RX? I was told that 5.4 does not have the range - what has been your experience? Cheers

Hi Stew I had originally thought that I might use FPV with this - even for 'virtual passengers'! But when I looked into it, the system uses 2.4 MHz and this is what I fly on. FPV retailer suggested I invest in a 35MHZ radio! I presume you fly on 35 MHz do you? I would be interested in your set up... Cheers

Hi Adrian, Well it has not been for want of trying...every time I get near to thinking that I have finsihed, something happens! I have had a real 'love-hate' kind of relationship with it. A few other models got in the way whilst I was putting this together, but this summer (joke) I have made a big effort at getting it finsihed. BUT - firstly one of my flap servo's decided to pack up. So I had to redo that, and then I thought that perhaps I coulf have handled the linkage geometry better. I blindly followed the fixing location for the horns until I realsied that they would not liune up with the servo arm....so I refixed these and made good the holes - so fine and dandy there. Then the nose wheel servo placement suggested by ASM did not work for me - it caused th servo to rock from side to side as on mine the servo cut out is at right angles to the line of force from the servo arm. I found that the arm started to bind on an internal bulkhead. So I decided to redo the whole linkage and re-orientate the servo with the pushrod. This now work fine, but it was such a major pain (involving cramped fingers) to sort it. Oy yes...and then I had programmed it for the Futabe 12FG and then bought the 18MZ - so cos I could not copy over the files, I have then reprogrammed it. This is now complete - but would be very keen to have your experience on compensatory ele settings. I originally had the flaps set up on a 3 pos switch - but have now decied to use a slider for these so that I can react to changes of wind etc. I also completed running in of the FG57, so all sweet there.... BUT, then what do you know, I was checking all of my servo linkages and found thast two pastic horns had cracked on the elevators. So tomorrow I take receipt of aluminium horns (replacing all of them) and that should solve that! And the other models....well I am just finishing an Aeroworks 50cc Ultimate ...but with a Roto 85FS flat twin in it, and a smoke system. It will be intersting to compare with the FG57. Both sound fantastic. I now have a new airfield to fly them from too - one that light aircraft fly from but in the heart of North Devon countryside - beautiful! Sio I am hoping to get to fly it over the next few weeks - all subject to weather, work and family commitments! Anyway if you can let me have your elevator compensation settings for the flaps that woudl be great - how has you flying been with yours..any feedback issues that would help me? Cheers

So to emphasise the issue: Connected to the TX the servo takes the channel command and works as expected for the channel it is set to - i.e. set to Throttle channel (Channel 3) it responds to the throttle command. When connected to the RX it refuses to accept the throttle command and only works with the Aileron command (Channels: 4/5, 7/8). The RX is bound to the TX (steady green light).

Yes I have followed the Manual exactly. Changing from one channel to the next and getting the new Channel registered by the 'write' command is what I did. If I disconnect the servo from the TX and then reconnect it - use Recall, I get the previous saved setting. So it works fine when connected tot he TX, but not when using the RX. With the RX, I connect to the servo on the SBus port adjacent to the 7/8 Channel port.

Futaba S.Bus programming with T18MZ
Hi, I write because I am now getting my head around the S.Bus features of this amazing radio. However, I am stumbling because nothing seems to work as it should with my attempts at configuring S.BUS servos. At first it all seemd to be so easy - hook up a Hub to the TX, plug in a servo and a battery. I set the Channel to the corresponding Channel/ Servo allocation in the Servo Monitor screen in the Linkage menu. In this case I set a Channel ID of 7 because that corresponded to the aileron servo that I wished to install in the wings ( I am putting together an Aeroworks 50cc Ultimate but with a Roto 85FS Flat twin). I twiddled the aileron stick and hey presto the servo responded. All the servo's are S9074SB's I then went to set up an Elevator servo and repeated the process. I use the Recall function and got the servo ID, and then set it to Channel 2 as per the Servo Monitor. But it would only respond to the Aileron command. No amount of resetting would change this. So I the found that the 18MZ needs a software upgrade to V2.1. So I did the upgrade and repeated the process. Now I could get the servo to respond to the correct TX command - a relief...so I thought. I then decoupled everything from the SBus port on the TX and set up the RX with the S.Bus hub connected to the SBus port at one end of the RX. But all I got was the servos responding to the ailron command - and no amount of re-setting would get the servo's to respond to their correct channel when attempting to control through the RX. Has anyone else had this problem that you are aware of? Any ideas what I might do differently? I can only think that either the TX software is not writing to the servo chip correctly, or the Servo's are faulty? Thanks for your help, Matt

Hi all, I have just managed to purchase a new FG21 - faintly hopeful that it wil be an improvement on my FG20. I experienced the same issues that many have expressed in this thread. Indeed I had the ignition unit replaced twice and the carb replaced three times by MacGregor in the UK. Also, had to replace three Saito spark plug. Like many I am a Saito lover - two FG30's and an FG57 - these run sooo sweetly, so with the new mods on the FG21 I am hoping that it will not dissapoint. I will let you know how I get on! Cheers

Hi Bax Thanks for this. Unfortunately Ripmax have not been much help. They say that as the product is new and they do not get one 'to play with' they cannot guide me. So I spend my time scouring the Internet and the hope that a simple answer from this forum might help me along the way. The Futaba 18 MZ manual is much better than that for the 12FG - also helped by the fact that I have worked tirelessly to understand how to get best use from it. At least it now has some explanation of 'why' and not just 'what'... so your explanation of acceleration is a great help, and I can now see how this could be used. Cheers

Thanks Krysta, I will be pleased to know how to use the additional battery port. I can only reason that it is where one has a separate power supply to the motor - but the cable interface spec should have been included in the manual? I have worked out how to link the RX - the receiver must not be powered before one turns on the telemetric linking - I had the RX already turned on and so it would not work for me. Having done it this way round I now have the linkage. Two more questions: 1. Do you know when the Futaba Telemetry sensors will be released in Europe? 2. What is the purpose of the 'Acceleration' function on the 18MZ - it is no clear from the manual... Thanks Matt

18 MZ Telemetry
Hi, I have just purchased the 18 MZ and I am trying to work out how to use the in-built RX battery monitoring in the R7008SB receiver. I understand that the TX has to be either in 12 or 18 channel mode for Telemetry functions to be used. I have a trial set up, where I have an ESC connected to Ch 3 on the RX being supplied by an 11.4 v LIPO. The model is a PA Extra On another forum I read that one way of achieving this was to connect the LIPO to the Extra Voltage port, by a cable from the LIPO to this port. Is this the only way that battery voltage can be fed back to the TX? Secondly in the System Type menu there is a FASSTest facility - one screen request to 'turn on telemetric receiver power'. Yet my RX is bound to the TX (green LED) but then flashed red when attempting to link. The link fails in the TX screen. Please could you explain how to set up this RX for the RX battery monitoring? Many thanks PS: The manual is a much better improvement on the 12FG manual - but despite this - I do not see a clear explanation of what to do here!

Hi Captmicom I am not sure if that is congratulations or commiserations! Whatever, you have a nice challenge in front of you... I am not sure if you have experience of the interiors kit - but my view is that it is rubbish, and now I understand what they have done - basically a floor and some cabin lining, with the seats, I would make up the interior myself. I ended up mounting the thin abs floor on 1/8th plywood, because there was so much flex the seats wobbled all over the place. The cabon lining is a poor fit to the windows and I am thinking that I will need some thin extruded gasket/ fillet type material to make a decent abutment. So if I were to make a lining I would do so from thicker plastic card and some balsa rails to frame the window and fix the card to. At least then one could add more realism too, for a 'stand-off' scale look. I appreciate that it is more work, but I guess it depends on how much time you woud wish to commit to it? I have been working on mine, on and off for the last year, and it is now complete apart from some small odd bits. However, the UK is being lashed by one storm after another, and torrential rain - it has beenn like this for weeks here in the south west. So I may not get to fly her for a while yet, for fear of sinking into a foot of mud! Finally, I ended my last post with a request for advice on compensating trim requirements for the elevator when at full flaps? What was you experience of this? Was any required? My next project is an Aeroworks 50cc Ultimate with a Roto 85FS up front. ..."I so love the smell of petrol (as opposed to napalm - if you ever saw the film) in the mornings!!' Cheers Matt

Happy New Year everyone... The delay looks good. I have set my Futaba 12FG with 3 Conditions: a) Take off, b) Cruise, c) Landing. For each condition I have programmed the radio to set different flaps, configure the lighting, and alter control surface rates etc etc. So on landing I deploy the flaps nice and slowly, but have max throw on up elevator with 90% expo, and have landing lights switched to full. In cruise mode I then have another set of rates, and flaps are at neutral. I have also set up a left hand slider to trim the elevator for intial test flights, because when trimming I have found it less stressful to be holding on to the elevator stick (Mode 2) and then trying to adjust the trims in flight at the same time. The left slider is very easy to get to, rather than trying to feel for the correct trim switch. Do full flaps (30 Deg) require any elevator compensation? Cheers Matt

Hi Ian , Airframe Inventer - I did mine a bit differently, because as can be seen from your photo I also wanted to get rid of the ugly junction between the fin and the abs fin shroud. The two tones of white really p***d me off. So I stripped off the white film, and then planed down the leading edge of the fin. I then routed a section of 1/4 square balsa so that this created a channel to route the wire. I then shaped the channel to the fin profile. The Braincube system uses a small pc board with the LED set into it. It is then connected to the wire with a standard servo plug. I could see no way of thread this through the fin as Airframe Inventer suggests (I presume that his led is mounted on the end of th wire?). By doing it the way that I did I could then dig out some balsa to accommodate the small pc board and make the connection to the plug. I then recovered the whole of the fin and abs section in Selotex and sprayed the whole lot in the same white colour. I am very pleaed with the result. With the wing navs and strobes, I cut the film at each wingtip (and made my cable joins in th void here) and then cut a small access hatch into each of the moulded tips to mount the lights. Then I threaded new cable through the wings, and connected up to the pc boards located within the moulded tips. I mounted each board onto the bottom of a small bit of plastic tube, the top of which was glued to the area where the nav light was fixed. The tube then acts as a shaft to allow the light to pass up the tube to the red/ green nav light. In hindsight the downside of the Braincube system is the little pc board into which the LED is mounted - and of course the need to connect it up to a servo plug - all of which take up space and make threading through structure really difficult. Despite this it does lead to a neat solution, and a complete set of lights. I guess it depends on how much trouble you wish to go to. Cheers

Hi Ian Yes I fitted the Braincube system. It runs from a separate 4.8v battery and links to a spare channel on the RX. The lights are very bright. They do a strobe for the wing tips and a beacon for the fin light. It is fairly easy to set up - but the wiring routes were a bit of work. Getting the wires to the fin was the most challenging - but worth the effort. The front landing lights are very good - very intense and fit the mouldings in the cowl perfectly. The instructions are very good and the telephone support is excellent. Cheers Matt

They cannot tell you if you want to cascade mixers or have them all separate."[/i] Of course they cannot - but that is not the point. Understanding a dual rate, triple rate and expo and how they impact each other would be a good start. How to set up a triple rate switch even better. How to configure a 'Condition' to implement a triple rate would be good. Yet you introduce another term: 'cascade mixers' - please show me where that is the in the manual! A good example of how confusing this all is, can be seen on this thread on RC Groups , which you contributed to: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=935250&page=2 You see it is not so much an issue of of describing what function does what - but the concepts behind the function and how to use the functions as a system so that they work together. Because Futaba have created so many options - it creates mass confusion, and makes the whole process so complex. It seems to me that Futaba assume that all users have grown up with computer radio's and so if you are using one of them, then you must understand the language. But as we know this is plainly incorrect. It was only recently that I stumbled on a forum entry that explains how to use the standard Butterfly mix (that it is designed to be operated from the throttle stick)...you will not find that in the manual... Finally, to say that the information is available on the web, but what a job to search it out....well I have searched a lot and leanrned a fair amount. But this has taken hours and massive amounts of trial and error. It should not be like this. But to move matters on, simply scouring this and other forums and collating the set up guides in one place maybe a goods start...

Hi all, let me jump in here. It was me who started off this thread, for many of the same reasons that have been stated here. I had set up a Google Group where those that do understand the nuances (and they are absolutley 'nuances') could share their expertise with those of us who were struggling. Through the Google Group I could not get any common position as to where/ how to start. We also had really unhelpful contributions from some that took what I regarded as a somewhat arrogant view which boiled down to : 'read the manual stupid'. But perhaps in fairness to those comments, there is a point where one has to read whatever and take time to work through and think about what has been written...so it cannot all be 'spoon feeding', is what I could infer from those comments. My thinking was to set out a simple step by step 'walk-though' for each typical configuration. A huge debate then started as to what is a 'typical configuration' and what plane types and on an on. I lost the will to live at this point. But I also felt that we needed some basic concepts explained on which the configuration is predicated. For example; what is the concept of a 'Condition' and why is this useful? Then an explanation of how to to configure a condition, with worked examples of different ones would have been very helpful. As I say we established a Google Group with a mind to collaborating on an on-line manual. My thinking was a kind of Wikipedia approach. A few of us set out how we might organise the document, but this simply attracted a lot of unhelpful comments, with little constructive contribution. Since that time I have experimented a learned more with my 12FG - but it is a time consuming process and I am sure that I have only scraped the surface. For those of you that read Model Aeroplane News there is a series articles that explain how to perform different aerobatic sequences. Supported by diagrams, they tell you why you need to execute various control inputs and the impact of them on the manoeuvre. Sooo helpful in my view. I think that these articles are a good example of what I would like to have in a manual. Perhaps our original approach was wrong ( ie 'top down' try to organise the manual first) , and that what is needed is those that have a programming configuration that they wish to share, then we simply collect these nuggets in one place. Later on they could then be organised into an on-line guide. Thoughts?

Now this is a nice idea! I have all the lead I need (even though my roof may leak a bit!!...joke)...Yesterday I had a similar idea, and had purchased an enamel metal cup, thinking that the lead my not stick to heat the lead in. I was going to make a ply box for the mould - but maybe your idea with an old can is better. Can't decide, between baked beans or chopped tomatoes for the can - but I will let you know which one comes out best...[:D]

...sorry Captmicon that was ajoke about lining the cowl - but you know I was chatting with a guy who is producing 4 stroke 50cc engines earlier this week and he told me how hi fills his cowls with expanding foam, and then carves them out to channel the venting and accommodate the engine. If one lined the cowl with lead strips and then used this foam, maybe that would be a good solution... However, for the moment I will melt some lead and make up weights to fix to the firewall in a weight box.

Thanks for this Captmicom - I am struggling to understand why i need so much more weight. I am using Futaba servos at the rear (simple analogue jobs) - so three in all and a bit of extra cabling for the lights. I admit I have to set the plane up on the C of G balancer (just approximated with lifting on my thumbs so far!). I placed a great lump of lead on the cowl over the firewall and that seemed to do the job! Perhaps I should line out the cowl with lead and deaden the engine noise too! I shall have another go this weekend...

Hi all, My Cessna is now virtually complete. From my contribution to this a few months back I mentioned that I am using a Saito FG57. This has two flexi pipe exhausts. I had studied some Cessna photos and they showed two 'vents' to the underside of the cowl. So I have replicated these to enable an exit for my exausts. You will see that i have also wired up a complete set of landing lights which are activated from a switch on the tranny. I have a Biela 3 blade prop and a spinner from Tru-Turn. I had to set the FG back, and I did this by routing out the firewall. I have fitted aluminium brackets behind it and bolted through the firewall. My biggest challenge now, is that it looks as though I need to put a lot of lead up front something like 4-6kg! I do not know exactly - but that is my task. How much have you guys had to add? How did you do this? Matt

Hi Pavuk, I have yet to find the C of G - but I am using a Saito 57T - so it will be similar in configuration to a boxer. I suspect that the engine might be a bit big - but I am no expert on these things. I suspect though that you will have a bit of work to move the engine rearwards - I had to set mine back about 10mm, so I routed out the fixing area, and then use alu plates behind the firewall to ensure a strong fixing. I attach a photo of my engine mounting ( I have subsequently moved the regulator and battery). The engine does fit neatly in the cowl without having to cut holes in it. I have read that others have need to put weight in the nose when using a smaller engine - so you may find that you do not need to with yours. If however, you do need to counter the nose weight, then there is an abs tail moulding that fits on the end of the fuselage, and you could put weight in that? I hope that this helps
