RE: NV Engines (formerly Norvel) are returning?
Hey Klondike, you moving that facility from Russia to California or something?

RE: NV Engines (formerly Norvel) are returning?
The Big Mig .061 Startup was my favorite engine. It even came with a tank mount. Best of all, it cost less than forty bucks when it hit my door. And that was direct from the distributor. (Full MSRP I'm sure) Hopefully Klondike makes it to that new facility and hits a price point that will allow that great engine to come back. (hint hint)

RE: Ulmer 049 wonder plans?
August 27th was my last day on the job after 14 years. It sucks! Do a search on SWR's or sheet wing racers. Man, those are FUN! Combatpigg did a lot of different ones with some off-the-chain bearing engines. At 110 square inches the AUW must be less than 8.5oz or they come in like augers. Vertical stab is 15% of the wing area and horizontal stab is 20%. Both numbers can be reduced a bit, depending on the planform. That's all from memory and not reliable.

RE: Ulmer 049 wonder plans?
Frank, it's around here somewhere. But you can experiment easily by making a fuse just big enough to bolt the engine on and a wing with 110-120 sq in! As soon as I find it, I'll add it though.

Clean it before you do ANYTHING! Pay special attention to the fuel delivery ports and needle valve. In my opinion it would be more fun to wipe your butt with fifty bucks. Easier on the nerves, too. [&:]

http://dnu.ulmercom.com/ Sorry I haven't been around guys, but life happens. I can't say the files I've got up are the most recent versions, but they looked to be. Gotta go through a lot of files one day and get it straightened out. dF, Legendary? I needed that today.[:)]

RE: CSTKAM-1.5 UCTKAM(0.09)
Never got the engines to run in any configuration. I never figured out why, but the most I could get was a fraction of a second. Gave 'em away a couple weeks ago to a guy that essentially got the same results. He's more hard-headed than I am and he's into boats, so if anything changes I'll post an update. You are 100% right about the booster port being blocked in the airplane config. What a headache it was figuring that out!

RE: This is gonna be tough...
Ahhh, I see what you mean. What do you think of these cut points? I definitely need to sit down and calculate the CG and make sure the tip area is behind it. A little trimming is going to be a must. But it's only a hundred sq in right now...[:D] The span is ~23"

RE: This is gonna be tough...
Bruce, you're a genius. There wasn't a fin in the drawing because I couldn't decide how to handle it looks-wise. I've got some plastic around here somewhere. This project just got more attractive! Plastic is pretty darn heavy, though. Hopefully it won't hurt it overall. My experience with flying wings is the opposite of ZZ's. CG's in the 10-12% range worked better. But even though the tail is small and short-coupled it may be enough to move it back. Toss-test it is! One last thought on the vert stab. Do you think a bit of anhedral in the horizontal would reduce the size of the plastic vert?

RE: This is gonna be tough...
CP, that IS very close to what I'm doing. It will surely pick up speed every time it turns back towards you. [sm=lol.gif] Get this, those internal lines near the tips are the hawks wingspan. I extended it a bit for my own comfort. Those wingtip feathers must do a lot of stabilizing work! It also has a much shorter head than mine. And I'm probably going to need to move the engine out a bit further! How do they balance?! It's no wonder it took so long to invent manned flight. Working from birds would be extremely hard. They don't even have a vertical stab!

This is gonna be tough...
I took a hawk silhouette and drew an airplane around it. It's more of a flying wing with an elevator. And it's gonna be tough to figure the CG! There is no telling whether I will build this next. A fellow club member wants to learn a thing or two about SWRs, so we may put our heads together for an afternoon build. Being one of the newly unemployed, time is all I've got. But I've got hand drawn plans of CP's original SWR and it's something I've wanted to build for a speed engine. Sooo... what do you guys think of this with a surestart?

RE: Maybe it's gettin' to be time...
FS, done. But you gotta buy dinner to get them. Rog, you do know that playing with electric motors will make you go blind. And grow hair on your palms. [>:] There have been a few changes around here that won't show up on the site. For instance, the biplane that was never finished move 1' closer to my desk... And I'm putting some airplane friendly shelving in my "new" work van. Getting canned and starting my own business has caused a real change in attitude. Even though I've got one more certification to get, it really is time to get back to doing something fun. It's been what, two years since I built a new model? Well, there was the building session, but that "airplane" never really flew and is sitting in the garage waiting on a longer nose moment.

RE: My COX is STUCK
After reading the title of this thread and seeing CP as the first poster, I was kinda disappointed by a less than whimsical response... It was probably just too obvious for our resident poet.[:D] I've broken loose engines that others gave up on this way: Disassemble as far as you can. Heat gun/ torch the cylinder (not too hot!!!) and turn the crankshaft. If that still doesn't work soak in wd for a bit and repeat step 1.

Drum tight covering and bahia grass. You gotta love it! After a few "clear monokote" patches and your wing sounds like a cheap baby rattle. The plane looks great so far!

Okay, I'm building something at least. Maybe a nice new airplane will follow... dnu.ulmercom.com It's gonna take some time to get this completely up. So far all I found is old backups. It's all here somewhere, but where is the big question. And I'm starting up a new business and that occupies a lot of my time!

RE: Cox fuel tank extender
Maybe I got different screws than Bob did, but I had to chuck them up in the drill and grind a tidbit off the head to get them to seat properly. Got mine from McMaster-Carr. If you are gonna fly 1/2a much, go ahead and order some prop screws in various lengths, too.
