RE: Cox black 5x3 prop fail.
Sounds to me like Cox got cheap and started remelting scrap. I doubt it was a change in the formula. Did anyone there care enough there to try something new in the past thirty years?

RE: Best glow head for a cox medallion 15
I put the crappy one on there because of the dirt. Looking for the gear and wheels, too. That field is dusty. Look, if you really want to get rid of that .051 that bad I can put it in my engine box with my forty other Cox engines.[;)]

RE: Best glow head for a cox medallion 15
The engine is fine now. Dirt did get into it, so I replaced it with a crappy TD. (not that TD's are crappy, just this one!) I ripped the covering off the fuse. Oil was finally seeping in. Gotta get it balsarite'd and recovered. How could I screw you with a free engine, wait, don't answer that. The jokes about the syringe holder were enough... Weren't the poles stuck up in the roof?

I got one of these from Devious Dave a while back and have recently pulled a kit off the shelf for it. I've got a header sticking out the back, but that's it. Is there a pipe or something I should be looking for?

RE: Merlin inserts = Norvel buttons
Andrew, these are the Merlin brand plugs. My camera really picks up everything. Just about everything about these plugs is shiny, including the sealing face. You know how tiny the element really is, so the intrusion is really minimal. If you picked one up and looked at it in person you'd think I was nit-picking.

Merlin inserts = Norvel buttons
Got my clamps and inserts in from Merlin a couple days ago and it turns out the combustion chamber is identical to the Norvel buttons. A very nice surprise! The clamps are the right diameter for a Cox cylinder and look very nice installed. The only real difference is the coil. The Norvel is tightly wound and in my experience prone to welding themselves together during accidental high speed runs. (like right after a prop spins off or more recently throws both blades) The Merlin coil worries me only slightly less. It is wound less tightly, but sticks out into the chamber just a tad and the weld looks to be almost non-existent. Time will tell if these are issues, but overall I'm extremely happy to have such a high quality replacement for such a low price!

Just to update you guys, I'm working out of town almost constantly right now. Not much progress to report, but it hasn't been shelved and we've got a new field to play at. I've probably driven right by most of the Carolina Crew at some point or another in the past couple of weeks...

RE: How did they sell millions of these things???
Pressure bladders don't work at all with a course thread needle like the one used on reedies. Actually, even on a TD you need a good KK needle valve. Those little black knobs on the needles vibrate like a Perry pump causing inconsistent running the whole time and eventually break the needle tip off. That and the fuel tube trick should make it run the tank dry every time. How short do you want the needle? Short enough![:D] Mine stick up about to the exhaust ports. The balloon tank is very simple. It consists of a tube stuck into a balloon and sealed. Don't worry about the balloon closing the tube off, etc. Think back to freezer pops. Use a nice big balloon so you don't get any pressure when you stick the fuel in it. Use the fuel syringe to remove air from the balloon before fueling. FYI, you do need to change balloons sometimes.

RE: How did they sell millions of these things???
ORIGINAL: AllTheGoodNamesAreTaken I'm going to have fun with these da'gum reedies if it kills me!
Well, to make that possible you only need to do a couple of things. #1- get rid of that slickmount. A balloon tank is cheap, easy and weighs almost nothing. Plus it's dead reliable! Plastic tanks are OK, but really heavy. #2- Remove needle valve and toss the spring. Slip on a bit of fuel tube to seal that leaky SOB. #3- Shorten the top of the needle valve and slot it for a flat-head screwdriver. (or when you go to the next step the needle will be unsupported and vibrate itself to destruction) #4- Toss the choke tube in the trash and buy an electric starter. All that takes about five minutes and really, really helps eliminate the frustration factor. Especially the electric starter...[:D] Reedies are my favorite engines now.

RE: Blast-off Blink?!
Dude, up until today it had been well over a year since I'd flown anything! Playing with rockets and flying today were prep for this guy. The .061 DNU made about five flights today until the vertical AND horizontal stabs fell off.[:D] Elevons and verticals are all that's left for the build to be finished. It's a priority this week since we have a new field to break in next weekend!

RE: What to build with these wings???
Mine ended up rapidly disassembling itself. CG too far back, not enough pitch stability. No big loss, though. The wing is intact and it won't take long to build a better fuselage. This time with room for the receiver...[:D]

RE: Ebay Ace wing copies
You got it about right there Robert. Not a big deal aerodynamically, but it won't fit a saddle made for the Ace cores. You'd get positive incidence. I guess you could just throw some lead in there on the CG to make it necessary...

RE: Ebay Ace wing copies
The tip is good. The issue is on the root side, but fades towards the tip. Like a defective root template. I'd be more likely to cut balsa than foam.[:D] They are supposed to be shortcuts not money savers.

RE: Ebay Ace wing copies
I don't really know much about foam, but here's my opinion. They are wire cut from beaded foam, but don't need to be sheeted. Iflyg450 has some 2" wide reinforced tape that kicks *ss and that is what I will be using on these, too. I bought three each.[:o]

RE: Ebay Ace wing copies
They are wire cut, white, light and tough. The taper cores look to be more accurate, but there is a bit of undercamber on the bottom/rear half of the airfoil. (not sure if that's the right word. It's dented up.)

Ebay Ace wing copies
Got my cores in two weeks after ordering. I think he may have forgot because they shipped the same day that I emailed him asking for a ETA. Completely forgivable. We've all been there before. But there is another issue. They aren't the same as the Ace brand cores that I have on hand! My straight core is 15/16" at it's thickest and the ebay core is 1 1/8" thick. 3/16 doesn't sound like much, but it sure looks like a lot! Actually, it's thicker all the way around. If you are looking for a replacement wing or something to use with a plan made for the originals, forget it. If you are looking for something to make a one-off project and you can't find a set of the originals... I've got a few spares I'd be willing to part with.

RE: Blast-off Blink?!
I'm using D11-P's, which I think are 24mm motors. What do you think about making some pyrogen with ping-pong balls, acetone and black powder and adding that to the Estes igniters?

RE: Blast-off Blink?!
Last week was vacation, so I didn't get much accomplished. We did go pick up some Estes rockets to play with. The result was quite a few shorted igniters. The solution was to strip the insulation off some cat5 wire and use about an inch on one leg of the igniter. No more shorts! My plan for reliable starts is this: Use the insulated igniters and a blob of caulk to hold them in. (the caulk should eliminate vibration damage to the igniter from having a screaming TD bare inches away.) Any problems you guys can think of with this setup?
