ZDZ 80 hookup
If you put the included ZDZ hardware on, you CAN'T leave the spring. so on a suggestion from Dick Hanson, I cut a thin slice of gas line making a little washer and put that under the "wheel collar thingie" before screwing it down. I am at the same point (putting a ZDZ80 on a H9 cap) and would also love to see setups. I like Roger's setup (thanks for the picture) and I used Roger's standoffs, and they worked great. I'm ready to make servo mounts...and I would like to see other pictures.... David Soniat

what receiver can I use?
Thanks for the info AMC (and all the other forums you participate in)! one further question for me..... I've currently got a 8uaps w/pcm rx. I'm planning on purchasing a 9Z in the fall. however, right now I need to buy another rx. can I buy the 9 channel pcm rx and use it with the 8uaps until I get a 9Z? I assume that last channel not having data transmitted will just be ignored? is that correct? thanks, David Soniat - tampa, Fl

Carb adjust - ZDZ 40
Hi all - I've got the ZDZ 40 in my Ohio Ultimate bipe. I've been running with a zinger 20-10 and wanted to change to the zinger PRO 20-10. now I believe it has been running a bit rich. I took the plug out the other day, and it was basically all black - no tan. (i'm using hi-test unleaded and amsoil at 40-1). i put the PRO 20-10 on and started it up. definitely got more rpms (but can't tell you how much - my tach crapped out on me). however, after i'd run it for a bit on full, if i returned it to idle quickly, it would stop. thought it was maybe too rich, so i leaned the low end. problem went away. everything seemed fine. took off and flew for a bit. about 10 min into flight I pulled the trottle back and it couged a bit and wouldn't respond. I tried giving it some throttle and it sorta chugged and then quit (I wouln't call i burbling though). anyway, I think i may have gone too lean on the low end, but probably still need to lean the high end. any thoughts? thanks, David Soniat - tampa, FL dsoniat@admin.usf.edu

I tried the "no heat" covering solvent. That actually seemed to do a really good job. AUTOCAD Question
CoosBayLumber - thanks for that info. that helps. I didn't make it clear though, I am saving it in .dxf from drafixs cad and trying to open that in autocad. it is the open in autocad where it asks for the shape file and then the subsequent print from autocad is where it blows up. i don't think i have any hatch patterns. it may be a fonts problem. any idea how to proceed? is there some way to pick a more "common font" which might not have the problem? or can I tell autocad somehow to substitute what it likes as a font? any help would be appreciated...... thanks, David

AUTOCAD Question
Hi, I don't use AutoCad (I use a program I was given called Drafix Cad). my program works nice enough for me. only problem is, I don't have a plotter. so when I'm ready to do nice output.....i can't do that. so I exported my drawing to .dxf format and brought it over to the architecture school on campus (I work at a university) and tried to get some help loading it in autocad and plotting it out. one kind soul tried to help, but here is what we ran into. when importing it, autocad asks us to specify a "shape" file (which he didn't have any idea about). we searched for shape files on disc (I believe they were .shx files) and picked one. that allowed us to open my drawings. However, when i tried to plot them it fails with a fatal error. Any idea what a shape file is? any idea what to do to get around this problem? thanks, David Tampa, FL.

Cost of printing dxf
Guys, thanks for all the information/comiseration. Ed, i'd take you up on that except, this was my first try at using cad for model airplanes. my first page isn't really finished yet. in addition, i'm going to need 3 more done (it is a 33%er). I'm on a mission now to find someone i can buddy up to who has one around here (i work at Univeristy of South Florida - i ought to be able to find someone.....) I actually prefered paying for it at the blueprint shop (no schmoozing or payback) but $18 a page sounds too steep. David

Cost of printing dxf
Hi, I was working on a set of plans for a plane I'm designing/building. I'm using Drafix cad (which was given to me). I can produce a DXF output file. I drafted up a quick sheet (34"X44") of the ribs and layout of the rudder (the plan is a 33% Extra). I called one of the blueprint places to get a price on printing that one sheet - $18! that sounds a bit high. at that rate, I'm going to spend nearly as much printing the plans as buying something! any ideas? (I plan to keep looking around for a cheaper way to print it out). David

Calculating CG
Hi all, i'm finishing up building an Ohio Ultimate Bipe (63"ws). The plans show the CG to be 4 in from the leading edge of the top wing. That looks really far forward (and I can't call them since they are no longer in business). How do I calculate the CG for a bipe with positive stagger, swept wings, AND remember the center section of these wings has an un-swept portion? thanks, David Soniat

Trailing edge dilemma
Darrinc, thanks for the reply. I only had an older demo verision of compufoil (and it didn't have the trailing edge wizard). I've now got the latest version. Haven't done it yet, but from your description, it sounds just like what the doctor ordered. RE: your question. I haven't done many foam wings, but they all seem to be heavier than built up. (i need to build 2 exactly the same and measure to confirm that). the building process is easier for me with built up. (it takes longer, though). I think I may do several wings on my next project (33% extra) and may do some built up and some foam..... thanks, DS

Trailing edge dilemma
Maybe a picture will help. these are "blow ups" of just the trailing edges of ribs. One has the taper to nothing (which as you can see makes the chord almost an inch too long. the other has the edge truncated to the thickness of the sheeting (3/32"). <OOPs, the files were too big, they were rejected. I'll try to slim them down and get them out there.> <I'm trying again>

Trailing edge dilemma
Hi, I've been working on plans for a scratch build on a 33% Extra. I'm working on ribs and having a problem with my design. This is a built up wing, with ribs sheeted with 3/32 balsa. At the trailing edges of ailerons, elevators and rudder I plan to make the ribs taper to a fine point and the sheeting extend to that spot. when I glue the sheeting on, the edges get glued together. that makes the trailing edges 3/16 thick (which I like rather than a delicate razor edge). My problem is in lofting this. I use Drafix CAD. I can resize my airfoils, but (of course) that 3/16 trailing edge keeps resizing. I looked at the trial version of Compufoil. Everything seems to come out with a razor edge - I don't see any way to truncate it to 3/16. If I truncate it, I'm now at the wrong chord value....so I have to increase that. it all seems to be a hit or miss kind of thing. Any suggestions? thanks, David Soniat - dsoniat@admin.usf.edu

PROGRESSIVE pitch Props like 18x6-14
My experience has been less than satisfactory with dual pitch props. The greatest pitch is definitly at the tip (even though it looks the opposite). I do NOT find them to be more efficient! As a matter of fact, how could they be more efficient? only one area of the prop (at any one time) will be matching the speed of the incoming airstream correctly. I have found propellors to be most efficient when they are carfully manufactured to have an exacting shape to maintain the same pitch throughout the length of the blade. The reason mfgs make the dual pitch props is: IT IS CHEAPER! The hub can be much thinnner. David

How to cut holes in ribs?
What do you guys use to cut holes in ribs? I'm mostly talking about the holes needed for the phenolic tubes used in giant scale wings (like 1.5" diameter). They have to be accurate and neat. Also, what about holes for the servo wire tubes? In the past, i've used forstner bits with my drill press....but I've never been satisifed with the end result in balsa. it often tears out and makes a ragged hole. David Soniat

Wing Plug-ins
I'm scratch building a 100" extra right now. I'll be using a 1.5" wing tube w/phenolic sockets (which I got from Gator R/C). if you are trying the wing-tubes for the first time, you might consider the anodized ones. I personally don't like all the black that comes off on your hand (and gets smudged on the covering) when you don't have an anodized aluminum tube. For a 100" wingspan, how long a tube are you guys using? David
