RE: Need help identifying airplanes! Royal Super Cub?
In all regards the landing gear does not fit any Piper aircraft. If this was a tri gear plane with a nose gear I would say it was a Tri-Pacer or a Colt. With the tail wheel it looks more like a Piper Pacer, going by the wide fuselage and stubby appearance. It is hard to see the wing relationship to the fuse, plus the struts are not there which makes the wings loook longer. Judging by the Kraft servos this plane has probably been around since the mid70s-mid 80s. Good luck finding all the peices, it should fly well!! John

RE: Thrust or no thrust on your large WWI models?
ORIGINAL: pimmnz The Sopwith and later Hawker tailplane trims are really 'British' in operation, fiendishly complex, as the elevator and bracing wires also go up and down with the tailplane trailing edge as well. I have a mate who is doing a 'Fury' with an adjustable tailplane, and it is an amazing piece of engineering simply to move the tailplane a couple of degrees...You could cheat by pivoting around the elevator hinge axis, but you still have the forward bracing wires to deal with...as for engine offsets, you will find that the originals had offset fins (Fokker, anyway) but most had some issues with elevator trim, Fokker pilots did, and still do, have a bunjee to assist with the forward push required to fly straight at normal flight speeds. Leave the engine straight, and trim with rudder and elevator, just as the originals pilots did. It will look better in flight, and you will appreciate the handling problems, and differences, between the various types. Evan, WB #12.
You are so right pimmnz totally 'British'. It is essentially a trim wheel turning a screw jack at the rear of the stab via cables. Ingenious but for the fact that it must have been heavy, producing a nose up attitude requiring the use of the system to bring the nose down!!. Rube G. maybe?? Abu, TK has an old Berhens Sop. Triplane in his rafters somewhere that I swapped him for an engine and I had built in this scale, moveable, stab. It was electric using a micro switch and servo setip. He took it out. That's Tom. Hey Tom, Like you say....keep it going! The seat looks great, of course, and quite comfortable!! Wish my fat rear would fit in it!! Hope you get a result on that fine engine you are selling. Have a good Thanksgiving and best to Beth and boys. Jack

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Tom, I want to take this oppotunity to thank you for bugging me enough till I agreed to drive up to the Rhinebeck gathering. The group you join up there is truly special. It was a joy to meet Glenn T, Glenn (Bruno) from CA, Rich and Jack, Norm, 1/2 scale Paul, Doug, Pia and her Mom, and others that I can't remember thier names. But especially Bob Arnold, who I was glad to assist in the repair of your planes. It was like he knew just what to bring to keep your planes flying!! Hope everyone had a safe trip back home. Thanks too for letting me fly the Pup, the second time that is. Now I have the incentive for finishing my 1/3 Pup. Here is my new vanity plate, I put it on after returning from Rhinebeck. Jack

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
I vote satin, if it is duller than semi-gloss, because the reflections I am seeing in these old pictures are not like mirrors but more like reflections off a smooth surface, not necessarily a shiny one. Does anyone know 100% just how shiny they were? Also, what does it look like out side......more shiny, or less? I'm betting a duller clear, outdoors, will reflect like a gloss clear inside. Why not test some on the square test pieces you have and look at them outdoors(must be a N.E. word).

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Hey Tom. The wing looks great!! I love the "jujyfruit box yellow" on the cowl and number 3. Also, the color of the candies on the box ??.......did the Germans eat jujyfruits or is this a coincidence? Tom, you know I'm kidding, but it is strange. I understand the rain, wind, and sun etc. on the top of the wing but, with that in mind, maybe the underside might have retained a bit more gloss? Just a thought. I'll call soon. Jack

Norm, Of all the real important things in life, looks like you and Tina got it right. Bless her soul. What a great example to set. Keep building and crashing. My first Pup was from Cal Smith plans in 1973. They're a bit cut-up but I still have them. Thanks for the sounding board Tom. Jack

OK Tom, tell me where to find the specs for the model Spandeau you need and I'll look it up and tell you if if I can do it. You want it scale, right?? Ha Ha. Seriously, I have the time, as you know, but it would have to be perfect and look new and I've always dealt with used, but hey, I wouldn't have to put dents in it!! I'll take a look anyway. Jack

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Wow Tom!! Funny how it went from looking like a big model wing to looking like a true replica wing. Good to see Norm following the build. I didn't go to as many meets as you but I sure remember everyone asking if Norm Goyer was going to show up. He always showed a genuine interest in the goings-on and was always friendly and open to talk to. Sure miss the mag. I think a lot of us are wondering when the guns and rotary will be built, or arrive. Not rushing you, of course. Jack

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Hi Norm, You didn't miss the fabric covering because the full-scale wing was bare plywood with stain and varnish. I asked Tom the same thing and he explained it to me. If Fokker didn't do it, Tom didn't do it. He is a stickler for detail, as you know. Neat coloring scheme, huh? He showed me the total coloring scheme and it will really stand out when completed. One of a kind.... the plane and Tom. Glad to see you still follow the N.E. contingint and you should post some pics of your E-D-VIII!! Jack

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Well Tom, it looks like a piece of furniture, just beautiful!! It was fun being in your inner-sanctum last week and listening to all of your ideas, I never get tired of that. I am sure a lot of guys following your thread would love to visit your shop and pick your brain on how you build and assemble everything. You are one of the "Master Builders" in the hobby. Your D-VIII is going to make someone very happy, or draw big crowds at some museum. Funny, your first scale project was almost as nice as this one, what, 27 yrs. ago? You don't think so but I do. So show it off at Rhinebeck, and listen to the congrats from all the followers of your thread, which is quite an achievement in it's own right, all the pictures and explaining...... that all took a lot of time. Thank you for all that time. Your old dogfight buddy.

RE: Mambo Special
On my previous message I stated I flew mine with a .19 and BOBHH said he flew his with a .35 so I think a .61 would be enough engine. If not I have a spare ST 2000 you could use lol. I have seen all kinds of Mambos for sale but not the Special yet. Is it just us or does everyone, when reaching a certain age, want to go back and start over with what we had at the beginning!! John

RE: Mambo Special
Hey, the 'Mambo Special" was the second plane I built.... the first was a SE5 that would only go in circles..... It was the first plane I took off and flew. It was built over the winter of 69-70 when I got my first R/C gear, a Kraft PCS 4 channel with those nice white linear servos. I put in an Enya .19, which I still have, sans carburator, took off from my workplace parking lot in Auburn, Mass. and once in the air had no idea what to do. It went down onto Southbridge St. behind the trees and a few minutes later a truck driver came walking over with it and was really amused, he had never seen a R/C model before. After that I joined the Quinapoxet R/C club in Holden to learn to fly. The "Special" was a great flyer, had a semi-symetrical wing and the flying stab on the bottom of the fuse. I do not remember if it was difficult to build since I built almost every Sterling model and didn't know the difference till My first German kit in 73 which was the Robbe "Maxi". Now that was a kit!! I dug out and scanned the only picture I think I have of the Mambo. John

RE: Ted White's El Gringo
OK, great......So who out there is flying the E.G. or is in the process of building one, or has or wants plans so he can build one?? Me? I have a lot of plans in the dungeon but this E.G. keeps crawlin' into my head. I have a couple of Webra .61 Blackheads to choose from for power and a set of mechanical retracts. I would build it as a taildragger like in '74 but I think silking it would not be an option this time, and definitely not Monokote! Somewhere, some company does a short kit for the E.G. A year or two ago a fella on RCU wrote about investigating some laser-cutting companies and I emailed him about his results but never heard from him, just in case you want to cut some corners. Gotta go.......later John

RE: Ted White's El Gringo
Hi Dwayne, Sent you some pics of the July,1970 RCModeler with the article by Ted white of the El Gringo. Also a pic of the one I built in 1974 seen at the Fitchburg, Mass. meet. I built it as a taildragger with retracts. Lots of carving and sanding, especially the turtledeck!! The article has construction guidelines in it also. I believe the plans from RCM also include the article, or it is available with the plans. Regards and good luck, John

RE: What was the best FIGHTER plane of WWI
Any plane in the same era could be shot down or out-fought by any other. It was the pilot and his smarts that shot down the enemy. A good pilot in an inferior plane was better than a poor pilot in a "great" plane. It was the pilots that made the planes. The Sopwith Triplane was far superior to the Fokker Triplane but the Fokker is remembered because a pilot by the name of Richtofen flew it. I expect some disagreement on this, but it is only one man's opinion. Pilot and plane match-up..... S.P.A.D. and Rickenbacker. Plane.....Fast, rugged, and lethal. Pilot....Smart, athletic, and mechanically inclined. JOHN

RE: Gilman Springs RC Flyers Dawn Patrol Fly-In
Right is right!! Give credit where credit is due. This aircraft is phenominal. If you didn't build it don't imply that you did, for any reason. I watched Tom build this Fokker in his factory in his kitchen in his apartment in Clinton MA. He did Fokkers, I did Sopwiths. Jack C. Now, on with the thread.

Hey Tom, Yes , post the D-VII build!! It will give you something to do....LOL. Really, what a georgeous plane. Love the aileron. How are you going to wrap 3/16 ply around it, or will you use thinner ply? Hi Nate, good to see you building too. It all begins with those beautiful little rubber power planes. Still one of the most rewarding types of flying!! Good luck and don't get your fingers stuck together. Jack

Hey Tom, They say that necessity is the mother of invention and you always seem to invent something that is just right. Great job!! Hi Tom, I, for one among many, am thrilled to see this project off the back burner and returned to RCU for all to see. You've been away so long that it seems no one knows you've re-started. After a while the questions will start coming in again. Of course I don't have any questions because I just visited you last week and checked it out. Are you sure it will go through that little window in the workshop? Can't wait to see the wing atop the fuselage......it will be a whole different look for everyone that has been following the build. Talk to you soon, Jack

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Hi Tom, After all these years I have never given any thought as to what material was used for WWI cowls!! We work with aluminum, but I don't think it was around in great quantities in 1914-1918. Perhaps it was thin steel and needed no other bracing (Norm). Have you checked out the D-VII @ Brome County Museum site. Totally original. Yellow wheels!! Jack C.

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Norm and Tom, Norm, you are correct about Tom's skills, and it would be something to see him doing full-scale!! But his models will end up in museums anyway, and you know, they're easier to walk around, take up less space, and are less expensive for the museum I met Tom in 1983 at the CMRCM in Westboro, and was amazed at his proficiency in dismantling his plane by going through the trees on the opposite side of the flying field. We were picking up pieces for an hour! And then I watched him build his first WWI scale D-VII; I called it the "peppermint" plane. We had incredible times dog fighting-me with my Pup against his D-VII. After that, he just followed his dream of building WWI scale, each one better than the previous until you just don't think he can get any better. Then he surprises you. That's enought praise for now, but let me ask you, Norm: How did you get that picture of my Pup during the 1985 Nationals in Chicopee? Best regards, Jack C.

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Mornin'Tom; Those panels look great!! Is that the color you where talking about that you would like to get to look like a dark shellac? It does in the computer pictures. I was wondering about the spoke pattern that is usually seen on covered wheels, did the Fokkers show like the Sopwiths did? Also, where the tires pneumatic, or solid rubber, because I couldn't find a fill-stem? Hope these questions don't sound stupid, but as you know, I have never built a Fokker or any other German plane, although I did have a Cox Stuka C/L model a few years ago ( like maybe 50 years!!). Hope to see the cowl soon too. Did the cowl have the cable groove in it or was it bolted on or what? See, Sopwith mentality!! Best to all, Jack C.
