RE: HK-450GT CCPM Alloy T-Rex compatible - Part III
TJ just posted a video of our recent flying at the field. Most are maiden flights of mine and Hugh's planks, but there is some Align 450 footage from TJ's quad. Very interesting video platform. Bryan

Think i will have any problems with this setup??
I think your electronics will be more than satisfactory. I have flown various Align gyros, and while they are very nice, the HK401B works great once you do the hot glue mod. You can find this modification on YouTube, and one of our members (Rob) posted a great video about it. I have been using the Tower Pro MG90s servos with great results, and have upgraded to the XGD-10HM digital servos for use on the flybarless 450s. The quality of the HK 450 is not even near par to the name brands, but it is definately less expensive from the start with one. By the time you get all the quirks, sub-par parts, bad chinese bearings, weak gears, and the lot sorted, you may have just as soon purchased an Align 450. There is a lot of information on this thread, and many folks that have been where you are not so long ago, and they are all willing to help. Welcome to the thread, stick around and get to know some of us. Bryan
ORIGINAL: nervousheli I had given a sacrifice to the HELI GODS today. Yep, one of my 450s. :( It seems winter time is set for us down here. The winds are just not playing nicely. :( I was flying to low, tried to do a flip, and a wind gust just blown my 450 heli, like it was nothin. Bam! Straight to the ground. Damage Report: Tail boom 1 knighthead bar Tail blade Tail servo HK450 DFC blade grip. CF pushrod etc. almost a write off. :( I still got another 450, but I don't think I want to sacrifice another. I think I'm done flying, until either I get a bigger heli. Or I just sim it out through out the winter time, like a big grumpy grizzly bear. :( A 500/550e is definitely on my wish list. That's definitely on the cards. I hope everyone else is going ok and getting some air time. [:o]
Sorry to hear of your woes. Damages sound fairly expensive. My suggestion is to sim out over the winter, and watch the auctions, you might just get lucky. Hugj over in the 450 thread (the other Georgia brother) has a very nice HK 550 that is too big for his style of flying and has mentioned that he will sell it. The price he mentioned is steap, but a whole lot less than assembling one from scratch. B
ORIGINAL: Kaos Side mount:
Very nice cable arrangement. How does that IKON FBL system work for you? I have a couple of CopterX CX1000 systems (they are OK, but I hate tethering them to my desktop to setup and adjust), a couple of the Align 3G systems (setup is a breaze but fff characteristics SUCKKK, it tends to pitch up terribly at any elevator setting lower than the Parkinsons nod), and one BeastX clone (my favorite among all). Back to the topic of the OP, I flew a couple of planks in the midst of severe thunderstorm warnings. The weather system that brought Texas and Oklahoma the tornados this past week was coming through Georgia today. Despite the weather, my buddy and I maidened his 105" 1/4 scale cub, and then I let him fly my Giant Super Sportster on the trainer box. He did well, and enjoyed the super sportster better than the trainer I have been working with him on. I did get a chance to fly the Align 450SE when the wind got to bad to fly the big birds. This is the one that I have the BeastX clone on with a mikado Vbar head. Man that thing flies well. I am enjoying this thread, and will lurk from time to time. I usually lurk over in the HK450 thread. I am one of the Georgia Brothers that Brian (RickyBob) makes fun of from time to time.

The PRO EFL version is a non Direct Link Control type head, and has swash following arms that attach the swash to the head assembly while the DFC uses the control arms to drive the swash plate. I have not flown a DFC and therefore can not give my impression of the differences in flight. Bryan

I didn't know ALL that is going on in the subtext of my little hobby!!![:D] For GODS SAKE sir, go OUTSIDE![;)] There are GIRLS there![8D] b "If you have two equally likely solutions to a problem, choose the simplest."
FYI Spread Spectrum Technology In 1933, a beautiful, young Austrian woman took off her clothes for a movie director. She ran through the woods, naked. She swam in a lake, naked. Pushing well beyond the social norms of the period. The most popular movie in 1933 was King Kong. But everyone in Hollywood was talking about that scandalous movie with the gorgeous, young Austrian woman. Louis B. Mayer, of the giant studio MGM, said she was the most beautiful woman in the world. The film was banned practically everywhere, which of course made it even more popular and valuable. Mussolini reportedly refused to sell his copy at any price. The star of the film, called Ecstasy, was Hedwig Kiesler. She said the secret of her beauty was "to stand there and look stupid." In reality, Kiesler was anything but stupid. She was a genius. She'd grown up as the only child of a prominent Jewish banker. She was a math prodigy. She excelled at science. As she grew older, she became ruthless, using all the power her body and mind gave her. Between the sexual roles she played, her tremendous beauty, and the power of her intellect, Kiesler would confound the men in her life, including her six husbands, two of the most ruthless dictators of the 20th century, and one of the greatest movie producers in history. Her beauty made her rich for a time. She is said to have made - and spent - $30 million in her life. But her greatest accomplishment resulted from her intellect, and her invention continues to shape the world we live in today. You see, this young Austrian starlet would take one of the most valuable technologies ever developed right from under Hitler's nose. After fleeing to America , she not only became a major Hollywood star, her name sits on one of the most important patents ever granted by the U.S. Patent Office. Today, when you use your cell phone or, over the next few years, as you experience super-fast wireless Internet access (via something called "long-term evolution" or "LTE" technology), you'll be using an extension of the technology a 20- year-old actress first conceived while sitting at dinner with Hitler. At the time she made Ecstasy, Kiesler was married to one of the richest men in Austria . Friedrich Mandl was Austria 's leading arms maker. His firm would become a key supplier to the Nazis. Mandl used his beautiful young wife as a showpiece at important business dinners with representatives of the Austrian, Italian, and German fascist forces. One of Mandl's favorite topics at these gatherings - which included meals with Hitler and Mussolini - was the technology surrounding radio-controlled missiles and torpedoes. Wireless weapons offered far greater ranges than the wire-controlled alternatives that prevailed at the time. Kiesler sat through these dinners "looking stupid," while absorbing everything she heard. As a Jew, Kiesler hated the Nazis. She abhorred her husband's business ambitions. Mandl responded to his willful wife by imprisoning her in his castle, Schloss Schwarzenau. In 1937, she managed to escape. She drugged her maid, snuck out of the castle wearing the maid's clothes, and sold her jewelry to finance a trip to London. (She got out just in time. In 1938, Germany annexed Austria . The Nazis seized Mandl's factory. He was half Jewish. Mandl fled to Brazil . Later, he became an adviser to Argentina 's iconic populist president, Juan Peron.) In London , Kiesler arranged a meeting with Louis B. Mayer. She signed a long-term contract with him, becoming one of MGM's biggest stars. She appeared in more than 20 films. She was a co-star to Clark Gable, Judy Garland, and even Bob Hope. Each of her first seven MGM movies was a blockbuster. But Kiesler cared far more about fighting the Nazis than about making movies. At the height of her fame, in 1942, she developed a new kind of communications system, optimized for sending coded messages that couldn't be "jammed." She was building a system that would allow torpedoes and guided bombs to always reach their targets. She was building a system to kill Nazis. By the 1940s, both the Nazis and the Allied forces were using the kind of single- frequency radio-controlled technology Kiesler's ex-husband had been peddling. The drawback of this technology was that the enemy could find the appropriate frequency and "jam" or intercept the signal, thereby interfering with the missile's intended path. Kiesler's key innovation was to "change the channel." It was a way of encoding a message across a broad area of the wireless spectrum. If one part of the spectrum was jammed, the message would still get through on one of the other frequencies being used. The problem was, she could not figure out how to synchronize the frequency changes on both the receiver and the transmitter. To solve the problem, she turned to perhaps the world's first techno-musician, George Anthiel. Anthiel was an acquaintance of Kiesler who achieved some notoriety for creating intricate musical compositions. He synchronized his melodies across twelve player pianos, producing stereophonic sounds no one had ever heard before. Kiesler incorporated Anthiel's technology for synchronizing his player pianos. Then, she was able to synchronize the frequency changes between a weapon's receiver and its transmitter. On August 11, 1942, U.S. Patent No. 2,292,387 was granted to Antheil and "Hedy Kiesler Markey," which was Kiesler's married name at the time. Most of you won't recognize the name Kiesler. And no one would remember the name Hedy Markey. But it's a fair bet than anyone reading this newsletter of a certain age will remember one of the great beauties of Hollywood's golden age ~ Hedy Lamarr. That's the name Louis B. Mayer gave to his prize actress. That's the name his movie company made famous. Meanwhile, almost no one knows Hedwig Kiesler - aka Hedy Lamarr- was one of the great pioneers of wireless communications. Her technology was developed by the U.S. Navy, which has used it ever since. You're probably using Lamarr's technology, too. Her patent sits at the foundation of "spread spectrum technology," which you use every day when you log on to a wi- fi network or make calls with your Bluetooth-enabled phone. It lies at the heart of the massive investments being made right now in so-called fourth-generation "LTE" wireless technology. This next generation of cell phones and cell towers will provide tremendous increases to wireless network speed and quality, by spreading wireless signals across the entire available spectrum. This kind of encoding is only possible using the kind of frequency switching that Hedwig Kiesler invented.

RE: HK-450GT CCPM Alloy T-Rex compatible - Part III
These are swappable between my 9X & 9XR, and my 9X has the telemetry mod & firmware which allows me to see the telemetry data right on the TX LCD screen. I'll probably do the same mods on my 9XR once I have the module built. I would like to know how well that works. Fuel / battery data would be very usefull for my field trainer, as well as other models. I tend to swell my heli batteries due to discharge below rated voltage. Speaking as an engineer with 30 years experience in the field; I believe the FRSky radio hardware can go toe-to-toe with anything Futaba has to offer; and I also believe, after looking at the waveform analyses, that it beats anything JR has all hollow. Of course, I remember the dark ages at Futaba too; they would have been purple with envy at the component density and the quality of the wave-soldering of even the current regular Turnigy/FlySky readio gear. And there are still people flying that stuff today... That is the very reason I chose FrSky. Until the advent of the Hitec system, it rivals the best of all worlds, price and dependability. I also like the re-link time, within a second, compared to Corona, DSM2. 3 seconds or more usually ends up in sub-terrainian flight. I have had some problems with the SMT components on the receivers, but I have only had those problems after a severe crash. I lost a channel due to a chip leg letting go of the land. The er9X firmware, in combination with the eePe & Companio9x firmware/memory editing software, make the 9X/9XR a REALLY formidable package in terms of a computer TX; I almost NEVER build a model profile on the radio anymore; I use my old Toughbook and Companio9x to build, then upload the new profile once it passes preliminary simulations in the editor. I never thought of using editing software via a computer to build model profiles. Neat. My buddy wanted to program his clone 450, and I had fits programming the CCPM mixing. He is still using the firmware that was shipped with the 9XR. mnem *Point-to-point soldered*
Thanks for the info, I know who to turn to for help. B

Maybe 100, maybe 12. mnem Good hunting!
I just got the notification. I like the FrSky stuff, have been flying with it in a JR XP7202 for over a year now. I have a newbe at the field that is having me convert a long antena JR 6102 to FrSky for him. I sold him on the price of the recievers...around $20 USD each. I have not tried the telemetry yet, but the guy that does our video is tinkering with it coupled with the Turnigy 9XR open source firmware designed for the FrSky telemetry information. It seems the system would be ok without any additional stuff mounted to the transmitter, and so I like the idea of the 9XR, I just don't like the radio. Bryan

I went to the 500 series helicopters after learning to somewhat fly my 450. I have a Gaui 425 plastic kit and an HK500GT, and both fly so much better than the 450s basically because they are easier to see. I kinda wished I had just saved my money for a larger helicopter, but then the parts are more expensive. A buddy of mine has the Trex 600N, and it is a joy to fly, but it is massive. Bigger does fly better, is easier to see, and is just more impressive than the 450 class helis. Bryan

I charged it for 40 hours at 50mah and all seemed well. After sitting for a couple hours I came back to it, switched the plane on and the on board voltmeter went straight to red. (red is dead, green is good) its a Hobbico voltmeter. Not sure what I'll do yet, but wanted to get an idea of what everyone else is using rx battery wise thanks Nick
When my packs start to react like this, I cycle them with my smart charger for 3 cycles and look for an increase in charge and discharge mAh rates. I have had batteries come back with no problems afterwards, and some have come back only to fail (in flight) only a couple of flights later. I strongly suggest replacing the pack, preferably with a new 6v NiMh or LiFePo4 6.6v chemistry. I like my A123 batteries because I can charge them at up to 10C in about 15 minutes at the field if need be. They also do not require cycling as they do not retain a memory. Bryan

What I'm looking for is a backing plate for the 9G servos; it looks sortof like this product, but it's made out of metal and the two center holes for the 9G servos have a 2mm thread. http://tarot-rc-heli.com/450-PRO-V2-CARBON-SERVO-TAIL-ROTOR-PLATE-HENGE They're used to eliminate the need to monkey-fart around with tiny nuts and needle-nose pliers on older-style T-Rex 450 clones that don't have the plastic inserts in the frame like the newer versions do. I had 2 sets of them that came with one of my Align T-Rex 450s; I've kept them all these years and used them on my HK-450GT. Now I can't find 'em, and I can't seem to find replacements either. ARGGH! Anybelly got any ideas? I hate to make 'em out of aluminum plate... mnem *Wasted on the young*
Try Googling 'Servo adapter plates'. My KDS 450 uses metal ones, and the Gaui 425 series uses plastic ones.

RE: HK-450GT CCPM Alloy T-Rex compatible - Part III
ORIGINAL: mnemennth Okay; I have a line on a used Align 3G FBL unit; it looks like a good deal but I understand they are older technology and I don't know if it does the mixing internally. Looking at the setup vids I've seen it appears pretty complex; am I better off getting one of the BeastX Clone units you guys have? Price is close to the BeastX clone. mnem *Fly-less*
I have a 3G unit that I picked up from Fee Bay that is installed in a $9 LH clone. I am running the Emax ES08D servos in it and it does VERY WELL. I found that following the instructions was straight forward, and it set up right the very first time. (I am not very good at following directions.) I have mine set up CCPM from the radio, but from reading the instructions, you can set it up and let the unit do the mixing. I have heard of problems from these units, but I guess I got lucky. Let me know if I can help you. Bryan

I will try to get more video of my flying as soon as the monsoon Isaac that is dumping dreary weather on our activities in North Georgia passes. Bryan
