RE: New virtual caller app for iPhone
OK DROIDs! I've just uploaded a build and notified everyone who has signed up in TestFlight AND registered an Android device, release notes are copied below, please read them! I have about 12 people who have signed up for a beta but have NO device registered, if you don't have a device registered, I won't approve you in to the beta because I don't know what device type I need to build for you... At the moment, no schedule editing, etc. getting the voice recognition to work reliably took more of my time than I expected and I don't want to sink a lot of time into this if the result won't be viable... Also, because I'm stuck with the Google-provided voice recognition stuff (instead of being able to use good 3rd party libs that run on the device no matter what version of iOS you are running) I have limited this to Android 4.1+ (JellyBean+) devices because they work with offline voice recognition, previous versions depend on the device being internet-connected which results in unacceptable recognition lag and unreliable functioning at the field. Release notes: First Android Build The Android voice recognizer sucks, the only way I could get it to work is with the annoying microphone dialog popping up with it's bings, etc. and if it thinks it heard you say something but it didn't understand what you said it will fail to recognize and then you have to hit a button to resume, I'm working on that! So this build is "functional" to get feedback at the same level the original iOS build was functional. To turn off voice recognition (so you can change classes, for example) say "Done", when you select a new class we'll start listening again... To start calling (or restart for that matter) say "Start". To go to the next maneuver say "Next" To go to the previous maneuver say "Back" To hear the current maneuver call again say "Repeat" Peter+ Released: May 23, 2013 Size: 857.1 KB

RE: New virtual caller app for iPhone
ANDROID GUYS! Ok. Here's the deal the Speech recognition APIs on Android fundamentally suck once you start listening, if something isn't heard in a very short (under 4 seconds) time the speech recognizer shuts down without letting me know it did that and I have to jump through hoops to try to figure out how to wake it up. I'm also struggling with how to get it to listen to the right microphone depending on the device, what's plugged in, etc. Sooo. I have the basic calling working, voice synthesis is great, hit a next button, etc. but no one wants to mess with hitting a "next" button, but speech recognition like I have for the iPhone looks like a longer road what would you think about having next/repeat based on TILT of the device? You could strap it to the back of your TX and tilt the TX to the right or up/down to get the next maneuver and tilt the other way to repeat the current maneuver... Peter+
ORIGINAL: tuny Looks great! Is it possible to write your own sequence. To use it for unknowns?
Hi Tuny, Absolutely, with the latest build for the iPhone you can create your own sequences and edit existing sequences to sit your preferences as to how you want stuff called. In addition, once I.have the first android version out (hopefully later this week) I'll be hooking in to the new unknown generator tool online that I built for Team USA and you can generate and save locally any number of unknown sequences. I just uploaded a build to TestFlight that supports everyone who signed up on TestFlight with an iOS device ID. This build supports creating your own schedules, testers, let me know what you think! Android folks, I was at the mall today for a haircut and I bought myself a little toy, a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 2 7.0 (P3113) :-) I'm curious, how many of you are running devices with Jelly Bean or that are upgradeable to Jelly Bean? Ice Cream sandwich requires an internet connection to use voice recognition, but Jelly Bean will do it locally. Thanks Peter+

RE: New virtual caller app for iPhone
Quick status update as I know there are a fair number of folks waiting to get their first beta build since they joined after my most recent build before I started surgery to allow local schedules to be defined. The good news is I made some major progress tonight with a good UI paradigm for managing your personal schedules, but I have one or two more UI views to implement to complete the process, so it will most likely be tomorrow evening before I get another build published. You'll also be able to copy the standard schedules so you can customize the calling for your schedule to your preferences (i.e. if you want to call it a "stop sign" instead of an "eight-sided loop", you can! Looks like it will do fine. My only concern would be the max surge current at 96A, I've definitely seen currents above that on my Vanquish + Hacker Q60-F3A combo. Peter+
ORIGINAL: danamania
ORIGINAL: pvogel battery position looks similar to my own. Do your main flight pack batteries really connect in back like that? Isn't your ESC near the nose and doesn't that make for some very long battery->ESC leads? If so, you should look into getting a CapPack or something similar to buffer the connection to the ESC, long battery->ESC

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Given the cost of these planes + their equipment, I prefer to be conservative. Here's the info from Schultze:
electronic speed controllers have been designed to operate correctly with a cable length between battery and controller at a maximum of 20 cm (7 inches) each lead. In some installations it will be necessary to increase the length of the battery cables. In this case it is necessary to install additional low-ESR decoupling capacitors. The installation of these additional capacitors allows the increase in length of the battery cables up to 30 cm (12“) max. (12“ pos.+ 12“ neg. cable) or up to 50 cm (20 inches) max. when using side by side soldered packs, depending on motor load.
Peter+

I think it's because, in general, the pattern community is a bunch of cantankerous fogies (myself included) who prefer to figure it out for themselves with some well-known starting points (+ 0.5 degrees wing, 0.0 degrees stab incidence, CoG at 25% MAC) Peter+

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
The problem that will likely make them illegal is that they are fail ON, so if there's a problem on the ground the system is HOT. My personal argument is that you need to have a cascade failure of multiple electronic components for that to be a problem but it is a valid safety concern even if the likelyhood of the cascade failure is billion to 1. A couple of people have contacted Emcotec about the fail on problem and they are looking at implementing fail off, but even that wouldn't comply with the proposed rule that requires a physical disconnect.
ORIGINAL: g_mkoch Peter I got a couple questions for you. 1. How are liking the zippy compacts (quality, balance, etc)? at that weight and price I'm really considering getting a couple to try them out. 2. How much does you vanquish weight with the compacts.? Happy Landings Guillermo
Hi Guillermo, 1. I like them a lot, about 30 cycles on each one, internal resistance is 1-3mOhms per cell for a total IR of 18-25 even flying in 105 degree temps this weekend they came down at about 115 degrees. No sign of puffing. I wish I could get more, but they've been out of stock since I got my first pair. 2. Well, before repairs to the LG, my over-equipped Vanquish was at 4860g with the power unlimited packs, so on a fresh Vanquish built the way I built mine I would be at 4800-4810. If I were willing to give up my Emcotec arming switch (which I will do if the rules for arming switches are actually passed and become official) I'd be down to 4750 or so. Peter+

But shipping for the Vanquish is 150, which is where I came to my $800 shipped price. I would actually be shocked if the 2M Osiris comes in over 800 shipped, I agree on the similarly sized planes from 3DHS being far less than $1000. I think Joe's info may be rumor, though September is about what I was expecting in terms of availability. Peter+

I don't know of a comparable for $500, but 800 gets you a vanquish shipped. $1000 is at the edge of what I'd pay for a built-up balsa pattern ship. $800 before shipping I'd pay without a second thought for 3DHobbyShop quality and AJ design. $800 is about what an 89" slick costs. Peter+

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
My lightest 10s pack weighs 1106g, my heaviest is 1170 or so. The light ones are zippy compact 10s 25c 5000s, my heavy ones are still light by the standard of what's out there in 2x5s or 10s/5000/20-25c range packs and are made from two 5s 4900 power unlimited packs from F3AUnlimited. If you aren't careful about your battery shopping you'll wind up in the 1300+g range for 10s 5000 packs. I agree with the folks here keeping your plane light makes a big difference and really recalibrates how you think about weight I know there's some stuff I need to do on my Vanquish to further reduce weight, like reducing wire lengths (the power wires are surprisingly heavy) and there's a few places where I've intentionally indulged the geek in me at the cost of about 100g, but there's no way I'd overbuild the ESC mount you've got there. My ESC is zip-tied onto the bottom of the motor mount box and has been perfectly happy and perfectly cool for well over 100 flights. Peter+

RE: 1st Annual Bakersfield D7 Spring Pattern Bash
I *love* the idea of a "novice" or "intro" class as a short-term entree' to Sportsman, one of the big advantages is that it offers the Sportsman competitors a chance to learn to judge maneuvers (which actually helps our own flying as well) in a less rushed and intense manner than judging intermediate or advanced. I get (sort of) the concern about splitting the contestants further but it doesn't feel like it should really be an issue novice would pull in folks who aren't competing today, some small % of them would get bitten by "the pattern bug" and eventually land in sportsman. It would help to identify folks that we can "take under our wing" and, in the spirit of the virtuous cycle of "Learn->Teach->Learn" sportsmen could offer to call + coach for the novice guys to get them up to sportsman level over time. Completely agree with Tony, it was a lot of fun and probably the most fun I've had at a pattern contest when NOT flying, but the flying was not as much fun for me as at other contests, I did enjoy calling for and guiding Chris Walker though. I hope he comes back for more, he definitely seemed bitten, though I think his weekend time is limited by his business. Peter+

RE: 1st Annual Bakersfield D7 Spring Pattern Bash
Good points Sean! I fear Luke and I are some of the last pattern pilots at Tomcats due to (unfounded, IMHO and from the data I've collected) concerns about radio interference on Futaba equipment at tomcats. As fixed wing training director I've actually been thinking about adding a training offering at the club for people interested in learning to fly the sportsman sequence it'll be a bit of the blind leading the blind, but I can certainly help people develop the confidence to fly the whole sequence and to know the basics of what to look for in their maneuvers and hopefully keep them from falling into a ditch (obscure biblical reference, sorry, I couldn't resist). As for being in the corner and not interacting, I've had quite a few folk come over and ask questions about getting started in RC, getting started with Aerobatics, electronics, electric power systems, etc. and I'm always happy to help. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll work to change the perception of "pattern corner". Peter+
