RE: New Parra T3
ORIGINAL: JohnAV8R Would you expect this OT replica to have more, the same, or less power than the present Parra 2.5 ? For anyone running the Parra 2.5 on glow, are you seeing more power? My lack of diesel fuel made me get the glow head. John
I guess it would depend on the Parra 15D set up. It comes with three choices of p/l combinations and a few venturi's with different sized holes, additionally it can have two different glow head buttons. My ABC Diesel example with the biggest hole (4.34mm) turns an APC 7 x 6 at 19K. This compares very favorably with a Nelson AAC Diesel with a 4.6 mm hole. With the smaller hole venturi my AAC diesel runs exactly the same rpm on the same prop as the same engine with a glowplug head on 10% nitro fuel. The Parra glow can also take a Nelson bottom sealing glowplug and a lot more nitro. So I'd say that the engine has better ultimate power potential as a glow. I'd expect the T3 to have less power but it would be eligible for c/l Vintage Combat and team race (Vintage A, Speed limited Diesel Goodyear, and Classic A classes). I'd guess that considering it's pedigree it would be somewhere between a genuine Oliver and a Rothwell R250 in power. I'll certainly be ordering one. Ray

RE: New Parra T3
ORIGINAL: greggles47 Does he say when they'll be available? Price?
Well it's only a CAD file right now apparently, but he's delivered pretty much when promised so far. Price? I'd guess about Euro 110 give or take a bit based on his other offerings. Should be great for Vintage Combat. We don't want it too cheap do we? Hopefully this will convince CS to give up making OT replicas. So many engines, so little time. [:D]

New Parra T3
Alberto Parra is planning to offer this new Oliver style 2.5cc diesel in the near future. It's aimed at the Vintage c/l market at this stage. Looks very R250-ish! George, very nice Olly, I believe that it's what John Goodall (he wrote the book on olly's) calls a mk3 3/6. There's also a very nice Oliver mk3 6/6 on ebay right now. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=271055796520&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en This has the cut away crankcase for the exhaust collector and the long headscrew retaining bosses. RE: OS 10 FP issue
ORIGINAL: gerryndennis I've always thought you could probably make the rub pads out of those white plastic vegetable cutting boards that get thrown out from the kitchen every now and again. A few minutes work with a fine tooth saw of some sort should give you a piece suitable for machining. Having said that the only time I've replaced a set they came with the new wrist pin. As FF says it was very cheap. I've only ever noticed them wearing if the rod has seized to the wrist pin though. So whenever I have the backplate off I always check to see if the rod slides fully forward and aft. If not I'll check the rub pads even if I can free it up in situ. Dave H
The white cutting boards are probably Nylon which has a relatively poor mechanical strength at higher temperatures, besides it's a pig to machine or work. Teflon is readily available on ebay. eg. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Glass-PTFE-Teflon-plastic-rod-10mm-dia-x-175mm-long-engineering-modelmaking-/310433597884?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item484748c9bc 10mm x 175mm for GBP2 is excellent, it probably also comes in 4, 6 mm diameters as well. In other words sized to fit the gudgeons. Teflon has excellent high temperature mechanical properties with a Melting point at 327 degrees Celsius and doesn't seriously degrade till 260 degrees C. It's also a pig to machine going by what's been said above. Interestingly it's nasty stuff when it melts, as Hydrogen Fluoride gas is given off reminiscent of the urban myths about Viton o-rings. I've never noticed any evidence of heat damage in a stock Teflon pad so they can't get too hot. Acetal pads melt at 175 degrees C, but no one has ever said that they've noticed any heat stress in used ones to date. Clearly the pads don't get anywhere near that temperature. Acetal also machines beautifully. Ray Edit: 4mm diameter Teflon rod is available here from China at USD 11 for 330mm. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1pcs-New-330mm-13-Long-Dia-4mm-PTFE-Teflon-Round-Rod-Bar-Dia-4mm-/290734578521?pt=BI_Tool_Work_Holding&hash=item43b1219b59

RE: PAW BACK PLATE REMOVER
Actually when holding the backplate in the 3-jaw chuck you only need to pull/push the cylinder about as much as you would using the coin in the vyce trick but it's far easier to make it move. The coin in the vyce trick (aka CITVT) is where you place the coin/washer or whatever in the side of the vyce jaws and tighten it up. You then engage the slots in the backplate of the PAW and rotate anti-clockwise. Obviously some of you people don't take PAW backplates off very often. Geez!!

RE: OS 10 FP issue
ORIGINAL: ffkiwi Chris-I've seen some munted pads over the years-your point presumes contact with the liner walls-if the gudgeon is short-and the pads don't make full contact then the potential is there for dislodgement-especially with a through bored gudgeon, where the internal pressure from combustion heat will press outwards. If the pad is dislodged from a short length gudgeon, then there is the potential for it to get tilted into the space between the end of the gudgeon and the wall of the liner. After all-the sole purpose of end pads is to prevent scoring of the liner or cylinder wall by a migrating gudgeon pin. And there are at least 5 retention options for gudgeons I can think of-circlips, press fit, fully floating, blind hole, and tapered hole. Only some of these have the potential for sideways movement. ChrisM 'ffkiwi'
We (in my club) regularly use Acetal (Delrin) turned down into a short rod on a lathe so that its a whisk over the gudgeon pin diameter. One end is simply "domed" with a fine file and then it's chopped off the rod with a balsa knife. It's then tapped into the cavity. It might take a few tries but it's no drama, it's done all the time and I'm not aware of any engine failures as a consequence. Ray

RE: Fake Oliver Tiger diesels
These are some of the specific differences between a CS and a real Oliver mk3 or an early Russian clone that should be obvious from a good picture. The CS mk3 OT isn't really a clone because none of the parts are interchangeable, it's an interpretation. It is much harder to pick the differences between an genuine OT mk3 and a Russian replica. The obvious difference is that the Ruski's have much better looking castings. [image]http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/201440/Zx70009.jpg[/image] A = Compression Screws: CS has a chemically blackened M6 x .75 thread the same as the shaft thread. OT has one made from hardened steel and has a 1/4" x 32 ME thread which is practically identical with a 1/4" x 32 tpi glow plug thread. Shaft is 1/4" x 26 tpi BSF thread. B = screw in backplate: CS has an o-ring seal and the rim is parallel turned.. OT has no gasket and the rim is slightly tapered. C = lower crankcase shape. In side profile the CS lower crankcase profile is straight. With the OT the lower profile is "drum shaped", with the maximum corresponding to where the shaft crankdisk would be inside. It tapers towards the backplate. The OT also has a stamped serial number on one lug. Usually a T followed by four or five numbers. eg T3815. Often there's the word "MOD" stamped on the other lug. This means that the engine has been factory "blueprinted" with a conservatively lightened piston, shaft timing modified and the exhaust duration set. George does yours have a serial number? Ray

RE: Fake Oliver Tiger diesels
ORIGINAL: ffkiwi What I think you're all overlooking is that in many cases-the vendor is UNAWARE of the distinction. Just because someone else writes in and says different-how does the vendor know that the information is correct? What specialist/expert credibility does another ebay member have-and how does the vendor verify the individual and the information supplied. In this case the vendor wasn't asking for assistance or help with identification in the listing as is sometimes the case. He had a box saying what it was-the 'Kennedy' Tiger, and another one in a COTE box. 'Looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck etc. CS Tigers don't have anything on them to identify them as CS. WE know better-but WE are not the typical Ebay vendor or buyer. Short of insisting on a certificate of provenance-(and who would issue this?) it's hard to do much about it. The buyer always has the option of returning the item if it is misrepresented-deliberately or otherwise. Yes I know this is an embuggerance-but in a lot of cases, the vendor is not the original purchaser of the item, it may have been through two or three hands before coming up for sale, and information may well have got lost on the way. In this particular case, I'm guessing-from the supporting text in the listing, that the vendor is not an aeromodeller, and definitely not an expert, and is listing based on the information associated with the engines as he purchased them. ChrisM 'ffkiwi'
Chris, I'd suggest that 10 minutes research on the Internet with Google would clear up any ambiguity about what is and isn't a genuine Oliver. I would also suspect that Mr Vendor would have received several messages to point out that his listing wasn't accurate. That should have rung alarm bells. I find that the journalistic technique of insisting on at least two independent confirmations works well in most cases of identification in life anyway and there's always that great method of posting a message on any forum requesting information. Fortunately it works the other way around as well. In my club there's great sport amongst us retired gentlemen in surfing all the model engine ebay listings and identifying those that are bargains or otherwise mislabeled. I'm constantly amused when I turn up at the flying field to be greeted by a mate with the latest exotic diesel acquisition off (say) Romanian or Bulgarian ebay. Ray

RE: What prop size for .15 Sport UC plnes?
In our c/l club we use the Taipan 8 x 4 white on motors like the MVVS and the STG20/15D in stunters/combat models, and the APC 7x6 in club racers. Both work well with those props. The white Taipan is available in Australia and may be also available in the US. The APC 8 x 5 works very well on Oliver Tigers and their clones. Ray

Chris, actually my first posting above was a warning to ebay buyers on the forum that what was represented on the auction site may not be genuine Oliver Tiger even if it's presented as such. I will take and post a few pics of various "OT" engines, genuine and clones to show what to look for in pics to determine what's what. Ray

RE: Fake Oliver Tiger diesels
ORIGINAL: ffkiwi I think you're overstating the case-if you check some of the other items on sale from that vendor, and the other Oliver listing you will see a box with a COTE label-'Classic Old time Engines'-which IIRC was an outfit run by a well known SAM afficionado who sold a variety of replica engines-mainly diesels- on the US market-including some of CS manufacture-and before CS became known for their replica range. As I recall they (COTE) were around in the late 80's and/or early 90's. This vendor states quite clearly in his description that most of the items are from estate sales of local (Colorado) collectors-he seems to be merely listing according to the written description on the engine box. COTE did not explicitly state in their literature or advertisements that they were not manufacturers of the engines they sold. ChrisM 'ffkiwi;
No I'm not over stating the case, he's modified the listing since I've written to him. Clearly both engines are bog standard CS and he's representing them as something else even after having the facts pointed out. An ethical ebay seller would have pulled the sale to check the facts and re listed after it was cleared up. A clubmate bought one of the COTE engines similarly described from an ebay seller a while ago and it turned out to be what it looked like, 100% CS from the "CS are really really crap" era. Some of the bidders are responding to the original listing where one of the engines was represented as being of Australian manufacture. The Andrew Kennedy quoted was a well known Australian modeller who never made any engines! [:D]

Fake Oliver Tiger diesels
Often CS Oliver Tiger (sometimes labled "Tigre"?) clones are misrepresented on Ebay as being genuine. This may be accidental or deliberate. This item on US Ebay is being represented as an Australian made replica. It isn't, it's 100% CS. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230843291743&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:US:1123 Another CS engine by the same seller is advertised now as a reproduction. He's changed the description a few hours ago from one that claimed that it was an American reproduction. I had written to the seller pointing out that his description was misleading in both cases. It seems that "fazdaracing" has decided to continue with the deception. A few years ago a fellow club member was taken in by a CS Oliver presented as a US replica just like this one was. Again it was 100% CS, available for much less! Buyer beware Ray

RE: 1.5cc diesel day
ORIGINAL: fiery Very nice. A question. Just how close are the CS cubs ''out of the box'', assuming you get a ''good 'un''?
The CS Cub is an "interpretation" of the Oliver Tiger Cub. Not one part is interchangeable. That said my late production CS Cub just needed a clean, a cleanup of internal burs etc and some grinding of the shaft port so that it actually lined up with the hole in the crankcase venturi. The p/l fit was very good and the exhaust duration was spot on at 140 degrees. The shaft timing needed a little touch up to get it to MOD specs. It goes great in a 1/2 A Vintage Team Racer and so do almost all of the others that have received the same treatment. Ray

1.5cc diesel day
I decided to blow the cobwebs out of some Oliver Tiger Cubs today since it was the first day of spring. These late two mark two's haven't been run for a few years and I'm looking to build a new Vintage 1/2A teamracer for them. The test prop was a standard APC 7x4. Both have standard factory venturi sized holes and are the "MOD" version. The first is the fastest, it turned the prop at 16700 then 16900 on the second tank. I'd expect it to go over 17000 with a few more tanks through it. The second is still running in and won't run flat out yet. Olivers can take a long time to really loosen up so it looks like the first will go in the new model. The MK2 Cubs have been made since the early 1960's and are being made again by Tom Ridley. The new production versions are reputed to be stronger performers that the old John Oliver ones. There are a number of good Cub reproductions available as well. The Rustler version is apparently excellent and even the CS Cub is ok out of the box. The Rothwell mk 1 Cub is now out of production but was a strong competitor. Remember these engines will turn an APC 7 x 4 strongly and are super economical and flick start first try hot or cold. Ray

RE: 2.5cc diesel day
Two more 2.5cc diesels. The lefthand one is a Rustler Oliver Tiger which is this weeks project. Yesterday it got a new set of races. It's a strong runner with an R250 shaft, comp screw and NVA and the rest is Rustler. It has the modern crankcase which has been modified to accept an exhaust collector ring. It should get a test run on Wednesday afternoon. The other is a Nelson 15 diesel. I've fitted an AAC p/l and the latter has been "squeezed" by RayA Racing in the US to help the fit along. I did ask for a tight fit and that's what it got. It's had about a litre through it on the bench and is just about ready to be hand started. Next time I'll ask him to make it a little less tight.
ORIGINAL: fiery Ray What can you tell me (if anything) about this older 2.5 cc MVVS? Is it a combat or T/R engine? My example is a little soft on compression. Do you know if a P&L set for the the current MVVS 2.5 DFS fit? I have not run it, but will do so shortly.
It was a c/l team racing engine. It wasn't much good for combat because it's RI and the models suit FI. A decent enough engine in it's day. I don't think it was ever likely to win in F2C but ok in lesser classes. Ed Needhem on the Barton site has been preparing them for use in British Goodyear. I recently sold Greg's (Greggles47 here) for him on ebay and it went to Ed who has made it run strongly. There's also one running in our NSW speed limited Diesel Goodyear and it does well, but it's been fixed up. Greg tells me that the problem with his was the rotary disk. I guess it depends what you want out of yours. I don't know about alternate p/l. I'll ask around, the FI MVVS diesel takes a few other brand p/l and this one may as well. A good engine man would be able to make a new piston and contra and set it up for you. Jon Fletcher may be able to help. It would probably cost as much as a new Fora Junior though. Ray.

RE: 2.5cc diesel day
ORIGINAL: greggles47 I've been playing with an MVVS D7 today. A mate got it for too much money (he says) and it only came with the pressure venturi. So first test runs produced ready burps but no sustained running. Home & on the lathe, I made up a 3mm venturi (periferal jetting) for it and what a sweet little motor. I'm going to have trouble giving it back to the owner.[:D] First flick starts and starting to smooth out. I don't think it's had too much running. By the time I had to call stumps it was too dark to get reliable tach readings. But was swinging a Taipan 8X4 with real authority. probably 12- 13K on moderate settings.
