Video: Yesterday, I performed my first inverted flight!
I performed my first knife edges and hovering two days ago. Yesterday, I decided to just go for it and go inverted with my Grayson Hobby 3D EPP Sukhoi, my first airplane. This was also my 20th flight. I'm not a total RC newbie, though. I've been flying helis for 28 months and just recently decided to also give airplanes a try. I'm having much fun!

Thanks, Stan. I'm Jim Nance. Yes, who knows, we may be related! I was born and raised in the Indianapolis area, in which I still live. It's nice to meet a fellow RC pilot who is also a Nance [8D].

Video - Maidened my first airplane outside yesterday.
I flew my Grayson Hobby 3D EPP Sukhoi outside for the first time today. I was restricted to flying in a nearby school parking lot because of the snow covered ground. Weather conditions were partly cloudy, 45F and winds gusting up to 10 mph out of the NNW. I was a little nervous about flying in the wind because the Sukhoi is a twitchy and sensitive airplane, even flying on low rates (70%); however, as in flying my helis, I never let the wind stop me from enjoying myself. After all, what’s the worst that can happen if I crash the Sukhoi? Probably nothing that a little hot glue can’t fix. It didn’t take me long to get accustomed to the flight characteristics of the Sukhoi in the wind. Flying the Sukhoi in the wind is very similar to the flight behavior of the virtual foamie models in Real Flight G4.5 and Phoenix RC. There is no doubt that my many hours of sim stick time prepared me very well for my pursuit into airplanes. Sure, I do believe that 26 months of flying helis has helped with learning to fly airplanes; however, helis and airplanes are still different beasts and I credit most of my success to the sim time. Anyway, it was much fun and the Sukhoi handled the wind quite well. I know that my flying is nothing to write home about, but this is still my first airplane and was only my 5th flight (the first four were indoors) overall with the Sukhoi. One thing I do need to work on is to cut the throttle a little earlier on landing to prevent the prop from beating the pavement :D. Lastly, thanks to my wife, once again, for doing a great job of operating the video camera. Though she accidentally stop recording for a few seconds after my first initial launch. No problem with me…I’m just glad she comes out to the flying field with me :). RE: Flying in strong Winds
I've flown micro fixed and collective pitch helis in up to 20 mph winds and it's made me a better overall pilot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt50vytl7xk&feature=channel_page http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzuKQBWl8V4&feature=channel_page Now that I'm starting to fly airplanes, my attitude remains the same..."I'm flying regardless of the wind."

RE: Video: Jus maidened my first airplane (foamie)
Thanks. The MCX suffered no damage. I would rate the Grayson Sukhoi pretty high as far as durability is concerned. Also, the Sukhoi was very enjoyable to fly. Then again, since I've only flown helis for 26 months and the Sukhoi is my first airplane....I really can't compare the Sukhoi to other airplanes [:D]. I'm going to be teaching myself 3D maneuvers with the Sukhoi...should be a blast!

Video: Jus maidened my first airplane (foamie)
This is my first airplane, the Grayson Hobby 3D EPP Sukhoi. My RC experience to date is flying helis for 26 months and I've also spent many hours on the sim (Real Flight G4.5 and Phoenix RC) flying the numerous virtual airplane models. I was very nervous about flying indoors coupled by the fact that I had to share the airspace with other aircraft. However, the flight went well and I was able to land successfully. I ended up flying an additional 3 flights later in the evening. As a matter of fact, I neglected my heli by only flying that machine one time :D. A couple of things did happen during the flight. At 0:32 into the video, my Sukhoi contacts a kid's Blade MCX coaxial heli. As you can see, my Sukhoi won the battle :D. Then, at 1:48 into the video, my camera operator is hit by an airplane...no damage done. IMO, if you have competent heli flying skills and you have some airplane sim time experience, forget the high-winged trainer because you'll probably be bored in 10 minutes. Instead, go for more of a challenge and begin with a sport or 3D airplane, as did I...it's a blast!

RE: What do you like the most about your HBK2?
I like the fact that I can take a stock barebones King 2 airframe...throw in the Esky 3900Kv motor, Dynam 30A ESC, HS-55 servos on the swash, HS-50 servo on the tail, AR6100 receiver, Telebee HH gyro and stock blades and have a very good flying heli. Yes, that's right guys...you don't need all of that blinged metal on the head. You don't need an upgraded tail. You don't need an updated pulley/belt. All you need are some good flying skills ;). I enjoy flying the King 2 in a large open flying field and flying in the wind. See my videos below. Great fun! http://blip.tv/file/1115283 http://blip.tv/file/1115417 http://blip.tv/file/1116625

RE: King 2 won't stay straight.
Check your belt tension. Perhaps the belt is too loose and needs tightened. Wow...all of this talk about modifying the tail, adding the Xtreme 43t Pulley/Belt, using larger tail rotor blades, etc. Sure, I've added the Telebee gyro to my King 2, but I still use the stock tail components, tail blades, stock pulley and stock belt. The tail performs just fine, as demonstrated in my following videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzuKQBWl8V4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Yq0gbHaxr4 (notice how the tail is holding very well during the full-collective punch-outs at 4:20 into the video [;)]) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7nemsQFUos Nothing against modding, but either you can fly an RC heli or you can't. That is the bottom line. I believe too many people rely on upgrades to make up for their lack of heli setup and lack of flying skills. Anyway, just a thought and my 2 cents on the subject.

The Conv kit is for a Blade CP but will work with FP only the Tail pipe is larger to allow the belt thru. Heres the dilema - The FP frame will only allow the lil' tail pipe. I was thinking of using the HB King2 fibre frame and that would make ease of mounting the tail kit. but im not sure if the HBee FP mast and control set will just slot in What you reckon? RE: Video: First flights of my Super FP
What you are describing is a characteristic of all helis. First of all, it's easier to yaw the heli left (CCW) because this is the opposite direction of the torque created by the CCW turning main rotor blades. It takes more force to yaw the heli to the right because the heli now has to counter that torque. Regarding drifting to the left...that is a common flight behavior of all helis that have CW rotating main blades.

RE: Video: First flights of my Super FP
ORIGINAL: FFlyer I got the same frame and got a few CNC components (swash and paddle holder) Everything else is stock. One thing which I don't like about the heli is if you yaw to the right while in a hover the heli moves a lot. It is quite easy to yaw left when the heli is stationary. I wonder if this problem becomes less severe by getting a GWS tail motor. Also, how easy was it to get the Spectrum receiver on that? I am debating about doing that conversion in the future. Thanks,
I'm not sure what you mean by "moves alot" when you yaw the heli to the right. Regarding the Spektrum Rx, it was a piece of cake to install.

RE: Video: First flights of my Super FP
Kelownan, I'll try to post some pics later this evening. Yesterday, I finally had the opportunity to maiden the Super FP outside. What a pleasure to fly! The wind picked up pretty good for a few moments, but the Super FP handled the gusty conditions very well. Of course, it's not all about the heli and I believe the pilot should get a little credit for his windy flying skills, as well ;). I was very satisfied with the amount of heat generated by the electronics. After an 8 min. flight with an air temperature of 82F and humidity at 40%, I recorded the following temperatures with my infrared thermometer: Main Motor: 116.8F Tail Motor: 89.0F Battery: 97.3F Main Motor ESC: 92.4F Tail Motor ESC: 85.4 Receiver: 83.0F Also, based upon battery power usage, I can squeeze just under a 9 min. flight out of the 800mAh lipo. I currently don't own a set of scales; therefore, I can't comment on the heli's AUW at this time. Thanks to my daughter for handling the camera duties even with a badly sprained right hand, which she used to operate the video camera. I would highly recommend viewing the high quality version of the videos. This video is from a few evenings ago around sunset. No wind and a very nice evening to practice on what I call "confined space flying." I tried to mix it up a bit, FFF, slow flight, stable hovering and lots of controlled piros. Anyway, it was alot of fun and I think this video confirms the fact that the HBFP is certainly a capable heli. Excuse the white balance issues. I forgot to changes a few settings.
