RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood)
Hey gang! Sorry to disappear like that. I returned to UNC-Chapel Hill last fall to finish my PhD/dissertation and have not had time to work on models. Plus, I needed a break; the kit thing was burning me out. Later this year I want to get back into things, but I just have different priorities right now. Thanks for all the interest and encouragement on this project! David

RE: Veco .19 RC
I agree. Some older technologies are still as good as the new stuff. Ken Enya still thinks so. Look at Fender Tweed amps from the '50s, for example. In over forty years no one has been able to make anything better. Amazing. Yep, the VECO .19 is on the DMS plans! David

These are extremely well built engines with two ball bearings. They are basically miniature VECO .61's. Beautiful little engines. David

RE: Need some good Dope!
35% nitro will dissolve Brodak clear butyrate. 25% will not harm it. I know this for a fact, at least when using Sig Champion fuels. I prefer Brodak dope to Sig. Brodak dope is actually Randolph dope. The thinner you use is probably the most important choice you'll make with dope. Try to find Dupont 3608S. If you can't - it was difficult for me to track down - then use Randolph or Brodak thinner. You can buy larger quantities of Randolph from Aircraft Spruce and save a few bucks: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/ David

RE: OK, all this Nano, Pico stuff...
Hey Y'all. I've been away from RCU for a few days (sometimes I spend too much time on the computer). I'm just about ready to start covering. The AUW of the airframe is 12.1ozs (343grms). That's everything that's made of wood, but no hardware. I applied micro-balloons/epoxy fillets around the fin, stab and the base of the canopy, so that added a little weight. The engine, muffler, engine mount and fuel tank weigh 10.4ozs (295grms). That brings it up to 22.5ozs (638grms) minus the radio gear. Three HS81's, one HS55 for throttle, a Berg Microstamp rx and a Radical RC 400mah pack weigh 3.45ozs (97grms). That brings it up to 25.95ozs (736grms). Hopefully the covering, pushrods, clevises, etc won't push it over 30ozs. That would give me a wing loading of about 14.5ozs or so. I'll try to post some photos later today. Brian, here's a new and updated set of plans. It shows the wider fuselage. David

RE: HB 61 PDP ???
I'm building a 66% Bridi UFO for my HB PDP .21: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8860320/tm.htm The PDP .21 weighs 8.4ozs (238grms) and spins an APC 9x4 over 13,500: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8242211/tm.htm By comparison my Magnum XLS.15 weighs 7.20zs (205grms) but can't really be asked to spin a 9" prop. The plane will come out under 30ozs less fuel and should have all the speed and power it needs with the little HB. David

Nice work Duane! That rudder looks like it would do some strange things like maybe even effect the pitch. There would have been a down-force on it when deflected. David

RE: Picorare Build Thread
I ordered some paint masks from Bill Fulmer: http://www.customcutgrafix.com/ I went to my local sign shop first, but they didn't have any "low tack" material. I was painting dope over dope and regular adhesive vinyl masks would have pulled up the dope. If you're not painting the letters - using vinyl letters instead - any sign shop will do. David

RE: Picorare Build Thread
Looking fantastic David. How long 'til the first flight? The Testors is the only decal paper I've used. It works great in inkjet printers, but it's not fuel or dope proof. I guess there's probably some clear spray that will protect it. I need to do some testing. I have a bunch of images I've worked on in Photoshop that I'd like to use for decals. David

RE: OK, all this Nano, Pico stuff...
Thanks. I agree, an electric motor would definitely fit in the scale nose. That's easy enough to include on the plans. While I was carving the dugout canoe I was thinking about making a plug for either vacuum forming or FG. It's just a hell of a lot of work.[:D] Next, is my least favorite part of building planes: the fairing on the center section of the wing that flows into the underside of the fuselage. David

RE: OK, all this Nano, Pico stuff...
I for got to mention that I made one change to the scale dimensions of the full-size UFO. After building the fuselage I felt like there wasn't enough room in the nose for anything larger than a .15. So, I sawed the fuselage in half lengthwise and glued in a 3/8" strip between the two halves. This gave plenty of room for larger engine mounts and also added more space in the radio compartment. I don't think it detracts from the original lines. I have updated the plans. When I get them finished I'll post a new PDF. David

RE: OK, all this Nano, Pico stuff...
Thanks guys. David, yes, I cut the tip blocks flush with the TE and then shape them. Then, I glue on a little section of TE stock to extend them back. It's just easier that way for me. I do soak the wood with thin CA, but a layer of 1/32" ply sandwiched inside would be a good idea. I haven't taken a lot of build photos on this project. Most of the major wood working is done. Next I'll glue on the fin and install the stabilizer. The entire chin/belly is removable. The nose-ring is split horizontally, so the bottom half is part of the removable lower section. This will make it easy to get to the tank and install/remove the engine. As everyone knows, the old pattern ships are cramped at full size. When you scale them down the noses get really, really tight. It was too much hassle for me trying to shoehorn the engine in. The removable section makes things a hundred times easier. I will tack glue it on and iron the covering over the seams. If I do need to get inside I can release the lower section with a razor blade. But, the covering will hide the seams. Weight of what's in the photos is 8.4ozs (238grms). David

RE: TE stock angle?
What I was asking before is if any of the balsa suppliers sell TE stock that is an Isosceles triangle. Right triangle TE stock is great for flat-bottom or semi-symmetrical airfoils. But, a symmetrical airfoil must have TE stock that is an Isosceles triangle. See image below. You must cut or sand a new leading edge onto most TE stock. Otherwise, you'll get what's in image #2. RE: TE stock angle?
Who sells TE stock or aileron stock that doesn't have a right angle? That is, an Isosceles triangle. I've never enjoyed cutting a new leading edge on stock for symmetrical wings. But, all the stock I order has the leading edge at a right angle to one of the long sides. David

RE: Glow-plug taps - what we pay for the title...
I wonder if would make any sense for a glow plug manufacturer to produce a special 5/16" x 32 glow plug. In most cases people would just buy a new cylinder head. But, with rare and OOP engines it would work to re-drill and tap the head. It's probably a solution that doesn't make business sense. David

RE: Love the build, But HATE covering? me 2
Graham, if you don't have to have a shiny, slick surface try the Worldtex from Horizon or Solartex from Balsa USA. It's the same product. It has a weave, so it will stretch around wing tips with ease. You don't get bubbles because some air will pass through the fabric as you iron one layer on top of another. Thanks guys. It's true that you have to enjoy sanding when you paint. The control line guys (best dope finishes you will ever see) use a silver base coat for two reasons. One, it acts as an opaque layer under colors like red which tend to be translucent, and, two, it will show low areas as shiny spots when sanding and filling. But, it's hours of work. WestCoastFlyer, that covering job looks perfect to me! David
