RE: Hangar 9 Fokker DVII
I crashed my brand new one last weekend, during takeoff... Just turning yo right, to the fence, without any control (lack of tail wheel ?)... Shutting throttle too late... Reparation ongoing... There was no wind... During maiden flight : lot of trim to ailerons... probably lack of side thrust ? Powered with Torque 4014 and 15*8 prop... 6s2p a123.

RE: A123 Question
I am not sure it's so simple, tomfiorentino, I had the same problem with a "panzer" pack for cars... I understand thet SeaJay has a pack with "red" and "black" as usual, plus ONE wire to balance. All chargers need a THREE pins connectors to balance a 2s pack, plus the usual "red" and "black". I have a picture of a pigtail with the right connector and the three wires. That pigtail has a "red" wire, a "black" wire and a central wire that is also black. You have to solder "red" on main "red", side "black" on main "black" and central "black" on that unique balance wire... Then connect the pigtail to the charger using the appropriate adapter AND both "red" and "black" using banana 4mm plugs. I don't know the kind of connector you have on your pack, suppose it's a "dean". Do the following: 1. buy a 2s pigtail (or a 2s extension with the extra connector cut off) 2. buy a pair of 2mm connectors, male and female 3. buy a pair of male 4mm banana plugs (to the charger) 4. buy a male "dean" (to your pack) 5. buy some wire and shrink tubes 6. take your solder iron 7. make two wires each with one banana 4mm plug (red and black), 20cm is ok. 8. solder a 2mm female plug on the extra lead of your pack and protect with shrink tube 9. solder banana "red" wire and "balance" red wire together on "dean" connector 10. do the same with "black" 11. solder a 2mm male plug to the center wire of the balance cable That's it !

RE: A123 Question
If you want to balance everytime, do it... I don't, it's useless... You don't balance the battery of you car, it's the same. To charge and balance, you have to build an adapter with 3 wires : "red", "extra", "black".

Look here : http://www.a123rc.com/ Shipping was free one month ago... Ten of them came in a small packet. But they have no solder lugs, not a problem for me... From HK, it's depending on the weight.

RE: A123 Question
Size is not an issue... you assemble them as needed... My "standard" is 6s2p, equivalent to 5s 5Ah LiPo... sometimes doubled to get 12s2p... 12s is the maximum you can charge without balancing with an iCharger 3010B. I have build a ring too to simulate a radial...

RE: Hangar 9 Fokker DVII
After crashing mine, I was lucky enough to find a replacement... Same configuration: Torque 4014 under 6s2p a123... A plywood tube goes thru the firewall to set the motor at the right place... The tube is large enough to contain the battery pack so that balancing is not a problem. I use the BEC from the ICE controller, backuped with a 4s eneloop pack separated by diode. As ususal, I have a main switch SPS from Emcotec.

RE: Hangar 9 Fokker DVII
To balance it with 6s2p a123, I had to the following: * build a wood box large enough to receive the pack; * cut a square hole in the firewall to insert the box; * mount the brushless to the front of the box; * glue the box at the right depth to set the propeller shaft and the propeller at the right place; * install the controller on top of the box in the propeller wind flow; * you may move the pack in the box to set the CoG.

An excellent plane... flying regularly since 3 years with a Torque 4014 and 6s2p a123. Skid is not an issue except for turning on the ground under high wind.

RE: ASM F-7F Tigercat
If you want redundancy, avoid switch failure and current limitation due to the small cable, use two times two a123 (can be 1100mAh), two diodes, two switches and two plugs to the Rx. Nothing better if you don't forget to charge them ;-)

RE: ASM F-7F Tigercat
About using a123 for Rx, you have different approaches: * charge before using and do nothing more (less than 15min on site with appropriate charger) * monitor pack usage with such a product (mama): http://www.slkelectronics.com/ * use a s-bec and maintain the a123 pack at float level for backup (only with electric planes) About using a123 for main pack, you have several approaches: * charge before flying and maintain statistics to set the timer (not worse than thermic) * use telemetry (like Jeti duplex + MUI) to monitor usage an set an alarm when time to land More... For Rx, I use two pairs of a123 1100mAh, two 5A diodes, two switches and two cables to the Rx. If you need lead, you may use two pairs of 2300mAh...

RE: KMP F-7F Tigercat
ORIGINAL: stoat A gyro on the rudder does work well, BUT make sure its on rate mode not heading hold, and it helps to mix in a tiny amount of aileron to rudder mix. That way when you turn the gyro sees an input and doesnt keep trying to correct the turn with opposite rudder (fatal on the tigercat!). Or you can just use rudder in the turns.
Excellent... I didn't know how to solve that issue... Thanks I will forget about Twinsync... even Bill is not convinced... May be an idea to solve the "one battery low" issue... I have two batteries, one per motor in each nacelle... A solution may be to connect both batteries in parallel with a cable between them so that they are kept at the same level. Would that raise unexpected problems ?

Twinsync seems to be the right answer, combined with a gyro on the rudder. Thanks

RE: KMP F-7F Tigercat
The risk is one pack going empty before the other... I have to manage that ! I don't expect a pack to fail... but a controller may fail... I lived that twice ! For inline motors like the Mossie or the P51, the pack is in a ctp tube going thru the firewall and carrying the brushless at the front. For radials like the P47, the Zero or the Swordfish, the pack is mounted in front of the firewall, around the brushless. The pack is not designed to be easily removed; not needed ! For proper CoG on the Tigercat, I should build a false radial with a ring of cells like I did for my Swordfish. The iCharger 3010B are also 1000W each... with one pack, I need to split the pack for charging... witth two packs, I don't need to.

RE: KMP F-7F Tigercat
Hello ! Following the documentation from e-flite, the 160 is designed for 10s LiPo (not 12s), max power is 2700W (not 3500W). Very similar is fact with the Scorpion S5525-225 I use on my Mossie with 3-blade Gsonic 18"*12" propeller. ESC is CC ICE2 HV80 and batteries are two 12s2p a123, one per motor to avoid ripple interference. I use two iCharger 3010B to charge in 15min max. Both batteries are checked by telemetry, setting an alarm off when it's time to land. The alternative was to use one bigger battery in the nose, raising several problems... * structural problem with 3.4kg in the nose when hard landing... now its 1.7kg on each wheel... * no charger big enough for fast charging... I am looking for some automatism to maintain control in case of motor failure : * gyro on aileron and/or rudder * some electronics to synchronize both motors, automaticaly reducing power on the other motor in case of failure and giving control back later. I lost my 2.7m PiperCub for a stupid reason : the ESC burned at takeoff and didn't ear the motor shutting down.

RE: KMP F-7F Tigercat
@ysolomon True, the config described on the site is probably too weak... Look at mine... A Scorpion goes up too nearly 2.5kW i.e. 77A under 32.4V (12s2p a123 under load) with 18"*12" 3-blade. More than enough

RE: KMP F-7F Tigercat
For my 100" Mossie, I toke the following options: 1. Scorpion 5525-225, CC ice2 HV80, 12s2p a123, 18*12 3-blade... twice 2. With one pack only, ESC ripple may interact... 3. Weight of the packs (4lbs each) is on the wheel... better structure when hard landing... 4. Very short wires... everything in a ctp tube... motor upfront, pack within, esc below... 5. Fast charge inplace with two iCharger 301B (15min) 6. Removable tail and wing tips for easy transport 7. All other functions in the fuse, except ailerons and half flap in the wing tips 8. Electric retract for main and tail 9. Jeti telemetry for main packs usage and speed 10. Emcotec SPS to cut main power (security and charging) 11. Dual a123 pair for rx power 12. All servos (except retract) are Hitec 645mg... radio Futaba FF9 with Jeti module.

No hatch with a123... A square tube for 12s2p pack accessible from below, wing removed... Also sets brushless Scorpion 5525-225 at the right position. a123 pack charged in place and never removed from the plane. 15min max to charge with iCharger 3010B. Propeller 3-blade Graupner Gsonic 18*12. Mechanical retract not yet broken.

RE: How to Setup A123 Pack with Charge & Arming Switch Capabilities?
You don't need to balance each time you charge... Use a dean plug to disconnect the pack and another one to charge it... My Fokker D.VII has a 6s2p a123 pack charged at 20A...
