RE: New 81
I would like to supercharge my P47 with the following powertrain: - Scorpion S-5545-180KV: 4500W, 1kg - Scorpion ESC: 130A - 14s3p a123: 3kg - 20*12 propeller Any comment on that configuration ?

Last minute... Fokker rebuilt with the following specifications: - Motor: Torque 4014T/570 - Propeller 15*8 - ESC: Scorpion 130A with integrated SBEC - Battery: 6s2p a123 with charging and security plugs (dean) - Esc relocated in the propeller airflow - Large opening under the tail to get air out - New 2.4 GHz radio Should not crash after radio interference any more ;-)
ORIGINAL: Greg Covey Al, I am not to the point of balancing the P-51D but moving the servo tray sounds like an extreme solution worthy of further consideration. Isaac, Please re-post in a separate thread so readers don't become confused about the different size models. The E-flite Power 160 would be an over-kill for your 65'' 10lb model. - The wiring harness for my P-51D is greatly simplified by the new 6970 Arming Switch from [link=http://www.maxxprod.com/mpi/mpi-21.html#arming]MPI[/link]. It can be mounted right in the fuselage and will either arm or disable my entire power system with a single plug. I can recharge both packs right in the plane and I don't even need an additional On/Off switch to the receiver. Although I made my own series pack adapter, they are now available from [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNKY9&P=7]Great Planes[/link].
As far as I know, MPI Arming Switch is based on Anderson Pole connectors, designed for 45 amps max. How do you feel with 100 amps and more thru them? I use a Dean connector to do that, at least good to 80 amps...

RE: Hangar 9 Fokker DVII
ORIGINAL: mobyal Nah. You're not the first one w/ the wheel/axle problem. I had the same thing happen. The ends of the axle are binding against the outside wheel half. First, the axle's too long. I can't remember how much I cut off it. Somewhere around a half inch? Second, what they tell you in the manual is crap and gave me fits until I said to hell w/ it and drilled a hole the size of the axle through the center of the outer wheel covers. Once you do that, you eliminate the binding that you're getting now and can do the fitting and axle-length trimmong in about 90 seconds. No one'll ever notice the small hole in your wheel covers. I have to transport mine disassembled and use a little different method than Pete for field assembly. We all leave the cabanes on the airplane but I loosen mine slightly. Then I put a towel on the assembly table and place the top wing on it, bottom side up. Turn the fuse upside down and put the the four 440 nuts through the cabanes into the top wing. Tighten them down, but not all the way. Plug in the ailerons. Then w/ the airplane still upside down I put the bottom wing on, again don't tighten the bolts all the way, and take the interplane struts, put the loops through the mounts on the top wing and the pins and wheel collars through the mounts on the bottom wing. Then tighten everything down, including where the cabanes mount into the fuse. Takes about five minutes. No problems at all w/ the wheel collars for the interplane struts.
That's the right way to mount it!

RE: New 81
I use two a123 RX packs isolated with a diode each; the gear servos are connected to one only, also with a diode. In case of gear fealure, one pack only is impacted. The RX is powered by both packs. Both gear servos are driven thru a MSA-10 that provides separate power connexion. Btw, both flaps servos are driven thru an external box that provides speed reduction and inversion. And both elevator are driven by a Futaba box that provides inversion too. Ailerons are assisted with a gyroscope, may be rudder too if usefull. Power train is a Cyclon 160 with CC HV-110 and 12s2p a123.

RE: Hangar 9 Fokker DVII
Thanks for your support, Mike. I worked hard today, the fuselage is "one" again; wait for appropriate ultracote. Next I switch RX to 2.4 and use FF10 TX. And install dual battery; 1100 mAH a123 ordered, no place for four 2300mAH (already 12 for power...) Two strings: two a123, switch with led and charge plug, 5A schottky diode, to two different connectors on the RX. Add'l LED meter on the RX to check battery level. Power battery has already a charging plug (I charge within the plane) and an emergency shut-off plug. Should you advise something else ? Thanks again.

RE: Hangar 9 Fokker DVII
I have build my packs using solderless tubes with add'l balancing taps. All packs are 6s1p, combined as needed for a specific aircraft. This is a consequence of my first loading procedure: a single .5R 50W resistance under 24V. It's not a 3D plane...

RE: Hangar 9 Fokker DVII
Motor is a Torque 4014/570KV max 80A (20sec) for 5s LiPo eqvt 6s a123. Controller is a Align RCE-BL75G peek 100A set to "low voltage protection". Pack is 6s2p a123, mounted in a box, thru the firewall, that support the motor too; this is to get the right CG without add'l lest. I use a dedicated 12V 152AH Pb battery to reload. A DC-AC converter provides 220V (main) the a MasTech reloads the pack at 20A, 21.6V. Mastech goes up to 50V if necessary (12s2p in my case at 43.2V). If you have electricity, MasTech is all what you need: lucky guy!

Fokker D.VII finished. Powered with Torque 4014/570 and 6s2p a123. Weight 4200gr, OK. CG at the right place. Big modification: a123 box thru the firewall, is also the motor mount; I had to push the a123 pack full forward. No lest. Will increase ailerons from 6mm to 12mm, just to be sure.

It's very expensive, but you get the retract for free[8|] The retracts are designed for a specific servo, not available in belgium. I had to adapt hitecs, it was not easy[:@] Design is very appropriate for electric, with removable top part of the fuselage. Will fly at summer, now it's too cold!

cwharper, that's also my intention. I have already the Mastech and just ordered a 1200W inverter. My former plan was to charge from 48V (4*38Ah) thru a set of resistances; but you have to stay behind. I have also a generator for the MasTech, but if you fly electric ;-( btw, do you balance your 12s2p? how? Thanks

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Going further with my electric conversion... My Cyclon 160 gives 2500 watts, 3500 watts peak, more than a Zenoah 38. Weight of Zenoah, silencer, battery, servo and full tank is around 3.5 kg. Weight of Cyclon 160, ESC and 12s3p a123 is of the same order. So I make place for the big pack just behind the firewall and I push the servos to the back. a123 are protected by two MM7, reducing throttle if ONE cell is going below 2.5 volts. a123 will be charged at the field from 48 volt gel battery without balancing (takes 12 min) a123 are charged at home with a robbe infinity III and a 12s balancer (takes part of the night)
