RE: Super Kaos help
I just found out the wing mounting dowels are wonky. One of the is higher so I filled in that mounting hole and I'll adjust it. I pulled of the covering from the block on the LE and found it was mounted wonky too so I'll have to sand it to fit the fuselage. I like the way this box is made so I'll do the same in the back.

RE: Super Kaos help
Hey David, I thought you would be building. The wing actually fits good, it's just set in the saddle without snugging it up. It's the gap in the back that puzzles me. I'll fill it with solid balsa, strip the center part of the wing the with of the fuselage and about 3" long, mount either bass or plywood where the wing bolts go, glue a balsa block to the bottom of the wing, feather it into the wing bolt locations and the block in the back, drill and tap (or inserts, I have both) cover and be done with it. I was just wondering if the plans showed that you would end up with a gap if you didn't put another piece in. Anyway, as long as I know it is typical to have a gap that needs to be filled I can continue. Photos to come.

RE: Super Kaos help
Ah, thanks guys. Crankpin, it is indeed a hand-me-down. I explained that in the last thread but their server timed out and erased it and I didn't have the time to explain it all again. I got the plane with the wings and fuselage covered. He did a great job except the trim on the wing is silver and the trim on the fuselage is black so this started me thinking I got the wrong wing but after I saw how well it fit I figured there must be a block, hatch, bulge or something missing. I did have to cover the tail surfaces...see photos. The bad thing is Missle Red does not look like it should when it's 20 years old and you have to use a new roll to finish![:@] I'm hoping to have it ready for the SPA event on the 26th (not a legal plane but they are making an exception since it won't be 'scored' per SPA yet), but we still are limited on engines so I thought I would try a OS 55 AX.

Not much happening here. I got the new Kaos which I believe is legal for SPA which is in September? It needs the stabilezers put on and covered as well as the ailerons and electronics and it will be ready. I need to sell some stuff of to purchase a .60 as my fun budget is going to scale models. Since it's almost done I'll post the Kaos in the Kaos thread. Tim

I noticed my Homelites have a metal plate on the front of the engine. Can this be milled off? At least the exhaust on them are on the side and not the back like the Ryobi.

RE: Homelite 25cc conversion
Here's some photos of a Ryobi I found. I think av8tor was saying this Ryobi isn't the most powerful of the 31 cc engines, maybe someone can say if it is or isn't (because of the bar in the exhaust?). The trimmer that it's on runs poorly and smokes a lot. Do you think the rings are bad? Here's some photos of the cylinder wall too. The Homelite 25cc engines I have might be better for this size plane. One of those starts fine, acts like it needs a carb rebuild, and the other one smokes like a train. I'll try to get some photos of the one I choose this weekend.

Homelite 25cc conversion
I have two blowers with Homelite 25cc. One is just pumping out smoke so I'm taking it apart tomorrow. I want to put it in a 1/5th scale clipped wing Cub. Maybe some floats too. I want the electronic ignition. I have access to a lathe (a very accurate lathe! and CNC mill so just about anything I can draw can be made) so I may make my own hub. I might have to put in a new ring. I've read av8tor talk about a special piston/pin/ring set. Here are my questions. Where do I get an electronic ignition. I saw one at my hobby shop today. for about $80? and about $165? for the one with the hub from CH. Are there better deals out there. Should I get the upgraded rings/piston/pin setup and where are these found. Should I use the Walbro 10? What kind of magnet goes in the hub? Would it be cheaper to buy a new Zenoah EI than upgrade one of these engines? I have a Saito 1.20 but I prefer gas. Thanks in advance, Tim

RE: Wire damage
It came back today, wow, that was quick. People ask me why I use certain brands, like DA, when there are other cheaper brands but the one thing I come back to is service. Hitec has definitely won me over there. I did not expect the servo to be replaced but honestly it did determine rather I used them again. I'm not patronizing them by saying I will always choose them but it will remain an equal option when I know they're behind me and their product. Thanks to Hitec for standing behind their product. I am still curious as to why it happened but in talking to all my buddies (a lot of professional RC pilots) it's a very rare case. Tim

Ok, how do you know if you need a 433, 499, 755, or what ever? Is there a chart somewhere that lists venturi sizes with the model numbers? Why aren't there stickys in this forum with that info? You guys are a WEALTH of knowledge. My flying buddies were over last night and we're all clueless (and that's saying something for these guys who build UAV's and have been in the hobby a long time). That seems to be the consensous with other users too. I know I'm out of warranty but just curious to see if they will say, 'hm, that's odd, we'll fix it', or if I'm going to have to pay for it. If I do have to pay for the repair I would rather have not wasted the money on the sending it in as I could have repaired it myself. The package was sent out Friday so we'll see what happens...time is mean LOL!

Wire damage
I'm a first time Hitec user. They were suggested by a reputable dealer and I was told they were just as good as the JR's I called to order. Well I hope this is just a 1 in a million fluke because the ground wire is damaged from the inside. Here's the background: I fly mostly warbirds, wanted a large gas but didn't know anything about them. I got a DA50 but didn't want to just put it in a plane that took a year or more to complete so I found a Yak for $300. I called to order everything I need August of '07, Hitec servos included, and assembled the plane. The ailerons required an inboard and outboard servo but an IMAC buddy told me they would bind and would loan me his servo machine but they were split off of a Y-harness. The outboard had a shorter wire so the inboard (the one that failed) has no tension. I didn't want to take everything back apart and since I don't do aerobatics or 3D I just removed the outboard servo linkage letting it turn freely in the slip stream. Since I'm not into that kind of flying the plane has around 20 flights (that first 5 gallons of fuel is still just under half full and the engine is still gurgling rich...I might need to throw it out LOL). This year I get it out for the first flight in almost a 9 months since the last flight and everything comes up and I'm checking through everything and after a minute the aileron goes limp. I checked all of the connections and when I turned it back on it was fine. I took it to the field a couple of days later and watched the aileron. It was fine. Then just before I throttled up to take off I noticed it had gone limp again. I took it home, took the servos out and all of the wiring and found that the black ground wire just as it goes into the servo was the problem. When I pushed in on it, it worked fine but when you release it the servo stopped working and you could hear electricity sparking noises as you moved the wire. As you can tell in the photos there is no damage to the wire so it has to be internally. I moved it closer to the servo and couldn't duplicate the problem so I'm sure it's a couple mm outside the rubber boot. I'm going to send it in for repair but I'm ready to buy the servos for the warbird and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Thanks, Tim

RE: Tiporare questions
Those look good David. I must have missed/forgotten that you were building one too. Are you going to glass it? I'm glad a redesigned mine with wider sub spars so I don't have wheel limitations. I thought you said you added something to the of the wing and I see a channel but I don't see anything in it. I was thinking of makeing the next one with a foam cut out channel and epoxy some carbon fiber in it, replace the cut out and sand it smooth. It should make a nice light spar. My buddy pulled out his Dirty Birdy and was practicing stalls when it got into such a tight stall that it wouldn't come out and he lost it so we will be building the next one together or he'll choose the Tipo also. Yah, one more week till I get caught up at work and back to the build :) Tim

David, of course I don't mind if we discuss other Tipo info here. This is more of a discussion anyway even though I renamed it. It will help me to possibly see something I haven't planned for yet...let the grey matter work it out before I get to it, LOL. I have a question about the flap install you guys are working out. If you put the flap servo in the center and connect both connecting rods from the flaps to only one side of the servo (let's say the right side) and connect both the right and left flap to this arm, wouldn't the fact that one connecting rod is longer cause the flaps to be at different angles once they are deployed?

Thanks Impactiq, that was interesting, especially since I'm building it and don't know anything about their history. David, I think it would be easier to glue the landing gear onto the rails, mark it out, and then use a HWC to remove the foam. Maybe next time. I think I'll draw the plate on the foam, then use the router to cut it out free hand instead of using the template because I cut everything out of the middle on my template.
