RE: FEJ BAe Hawk 1:4,5 -CG
ORIGINAL: Ali Stunning work on that Cockpit. My centre of gravity test for the hawk is to have it assembled with no fuel but hopper full. Tilt it so the nose wheel is off the floor and the rear ventral fins are just touching the ground. Release the rudder and the nose should drop down to the ground nice and gently. This is a safe setting, you can fine tune from there. I have flown with Hawks where when I do this test the back stays on the ground but I found it too sensitive on the elevator. If the nose falls to the ground hard, I found it a little nose heavy, which was not too much of a problem with the Hawk, it just means a slightly faster landing speed. I hope this helps? Regards Al
If you are looking for an actual point to start with Ali's great way of doing this....look at about 230mm from the front tip of the wing root, NOT the fuse farings. If you do use a CG structure, be certain to take the vertical stands out the end of the main outer gear door since there is some good structure there to settle the weight of the plane on. What Ali is saying is a great way but this might give you a starting point if you are wanting a measurement. Rex

RE: FE F-16 1:5.5 Whos got one
Bill, I am sending you a pm with my cell number. I am traveling for business right now, in PHX and heading to DFW this afternoon. I'll try and call when I get some time at the airport. In the meantime, the FEJ 1/5.5 is absolutely a great airframe. I have built the early ones before Honeycomb and also with the honeycomb. Yes, the first production ones were quite heavy but flew like a dream and felt extremely light in the air. There are ton of videos of my Arctic Aggressor F-16 on Youtube and RCU Videos and KY Jets from 3 years ago. My original one was 71 lbs wet and now has over 200 flights and still going after more than 3 years. I did get Matrix to build a custom gear since there were issues early on with the FEJ gear. Now, with their newer design and the fact that the 1/5.5 and 1/4.6 have electric gears...they are really a great way to go for sure. The construction quality of the FEJ planes is fantastic. They vacuum bag their layups and all their former "marriages" to the airframes, wing spars, servo box setups are very well proven to be high quality. I'll touch base soon. Rex

RE: Which large hawk?
But you still are a SM dealer! The FEJ Hawk is a great airframe for sure. Have built 6 now and flown all but one for others. Started building and flying them almost 3 years ago when they first came out. From day one they were fantastic, even before the Honeycomb construction. I have one on the bench right now and I see so much in the way of quality and clean layups. It's a great airframe to put together. So many of these are in the air now with well over 100 flights on the airframes. You cannot beat the Stab setup either as far as robust in design and strength. I don't know about the overseas markets as far as customer service but here in the US, it is absolutely wonderful. Best of luck on your Hawk selection. Rex

RE: Honeycomb
Pete, I thought the same thing on the repairs for honeycomb UNTIL I did a pretty big repair on a friends Hawk that got loose in his Trailer on the ride home from MS AB event. I did it at Jets Over KY, repaired the whole back section of the FEJ Hawk at the Speed Brake hatch. It was incredibly easy to get a strong bond with the CF and FG cloth and then filling and sanding the outside was a snap too. I was proven wrong on this one. Now, a wing might be a different story since inside access would be tough for sure. But this saved the Fuse and we flew it several times 24 hours after the repair. The paint wasn't touched up but it was super strong again. Rex

RE: Jets Over Kentucky Part II (Crash)
ORIGINAL: mr_matt
ORIGINAL: rhklenke A servo is a feedback control system. That is, a part of the output (the servo position) is fed back into the input (the motor control polarity and voltage). If you get the conditions right, *any* feedback control system can oscillate. Since the high-end JR servos are designed for tight centering (narrow dead-band and high gain), if you put them into a system that has low initial force (like a balanced surface, or nearly so), but high inertia (like a big stabilator), you're very likely to get oscillation. As long as the oscillation is damped (i.e., it is of a constant, or non-increasing amplitude), and it stops as soon as force is applied or you command a surface movement, you're fine. If your surface is oscillating and when you push on it, it continues or gets worse, then you have a servo problem. Bob
Great post Bob. In you work have you seen any servos that let you adjust any gain settings? I have only seen deadband adjustments on hitec. I thought maybe you have used dynamixel or futaba at your work and you have exposure to the latest stuff. Thanks
+1 here on that...great intel Bob!

RE: Fly Eagle F-16 1:4.6 Advance, wow
Man...no clue at all why! If it were mine, I'd get some good insight from a few of my flying friends that build their planes too and make the fix though. If I didn't think it was a good hinge line, I'd just fix it...and get that bird flying! The first F-16 1/5.5 I got from FEJ...I went head to toe on that thing with a magnifying glass. There were two things I did not like at that point...not enough torsional strength in the fuse for that mile high vertical fin which I fixed with two Kevlar X's along the inside top of the fuse where the stab joined. And, the wood plates that were going to hold the Stab servos were not up to my par...which I simply laminated the plates and 2" on each side with 5oz. CF cloth and Kevlar weave. Hate to see a bird like that collect dust though...sorry for your issue, man!
ORIGINAL: FenderBean one of my elevator servos has started doing that same thing, it only does it if i pop the control on taxi or the jet shakes on taxi out from bumps. I have never seen that happen but I guess its normal.
FB, yes that is "normal" as the servo is "finding center" is what JR tells us. I sent back two servos the first time it ever happened to me on a F-16 project. They sent me two more, put them in and it happened again! But everyone that I consider a good resource with Horizon all say the same thing and it always goes away once I get some air over the surfaces. Also, I balance the Stabs to just a hair forward of the Stab Pivot (which is on or close enough to MAC) which can make it even more sensitive to center. Rex
ORIGINAL: ravill It is still TBD if these jet can fly for more than 20-30 flights. That's right at the time when you are getting used to them and then stabs flutter off, vertical stabs disentigrate, etc...
Ravill, That is just not the case with any of the FEJ airframe I have owned in the last 4 years...which I believe is now 7 of my own and I have assembled 5 more for friends. I remember being one of the first 10 to get the 1/7th scale F-18F when FEJ was just getting started. It was a heavy bird but it flew great and is still flying today...four years later and one of the first of that model. I have several buddies with the very same experience as well. It cannot be "luck" nor can it be chance because I have assembled and flown several of their different models...now all of them were in the larger scale but have never had an issue with airframe quality, control surface flutter, no issues with the "MAC" discussion on the stabs with the F-18 or F-16. All of them have been flown aggressively, inspected and are still flying today. I am only speaking from my own experience and the experience I have seen with my close friends FEJ planes over the past 4 years.

I built that plane for a friend and it does have (2) 8711's on each Elev. and I "balanced" the stabs too. RE: Something that I have to ask
FB, I rarely get on the Forum's anymore, maybe once a month now. I started with jets I guess around 6 years ago and the Forums were pretty much giving "data" rather than "commentary" and that's why I went to the Forum, for data...good intel that someone shared about the learning curve or some great tips on a build. I just finished three (3) builds for a guy and was begged to post the progress of each on RCU...I said NO WAY! I think most of the "seasoned" or long timers in Jets don't even go onto RCU anymore is because they really don't care about editorial comments and since there really aren't many "facts" being posted...they don't waste their time...they just talk among themselves. But I will say this, they will help and include anyone at any time. I agree with Andy on the "shirt off your back" thingy. I experienced that the first day I got into jets and still see it happening today. Actually, my first actual posts on Jets was with Andy Andrews as we both were building our first SM 1/6 F-16 and Tor was helping us along through the Forums...remember Andy? It was awesome. Not one bit of commentary...all facts and helpful tips. We were having a heck of a time with Gear Doors (before the factory ever started installing them for you) and Tor and a few others got us through it, thank God! That's why I would only go to the Forums...facts and help tips and community! When I got into the Jet side of this hobby...it was really calm for the most part. I thought Warbirds Forum's were terrible...boring and full of strife! IMO, the "Volume" got turned up in the Jet Forum when the ARF world came into full swing and lower priced equipment made what would typically take a guy 10 years in the hobby to even consider...was buying a jet after being just 6 months in the hobby. That does concern the "veterans" because there is quite a bit of concern for build quality, safety and control of a Jet. When I get on the Forum's, I only look for threads that appear to have facts and not this bashing commentary. I agree there is nothing wrong with constructive criticism to help sharpen iron among us all BUT...most of the comments that people are calling "constructive" are really self assigned "aeronautical engineers and power hungry folks wanting to read their own words". FB, your threads are proof of this! You are wanting to share as you go, ask questions...and then...commentary! Best wishes to you as you enjoy this hobby! Rex

FB, I just finished the install and set up on the 1/6 FEJ F-18 for a friend. The whole slat design was changed so I don;t know if you got the newer version but there is no longer live hinging. It all works on pivots the full length of the slat and wing internally and a single servo set into the wing fairing to drive it. There is not a whole bunch of movement allowed for the surface but being a leading edge slat, it will be very effective on flight characteristics. Rex

RE: Who has Changed over to the newer DSMX and why
I switched. Had DSM2 and two years ago, lost Rx completely at a Big Jet at a large event with over 100 pilots in attendance with over 275 planes. Most of the time DSM2 is fine at my home field but when at a large event with full pilot stations and tons of jets being worked on under the tents...DSMX has greater security. Who knows how many Tx's were on at any one time at these larger events! But, I bet at KY, Nall or FJ, you could get as many as 45-50 Tx's on at any given time with pit work and flight line.
