RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
ORIGINAL: aaroncmh Thanks Ed...much appreciated. And Airborne told me to just send the wings back so they can see if the flap hinges had glue on them...dude even said cut the wings in half to make a smaller package which I thought was really cool. After he said it I looked at the two hinges that were left in the flap that came off and each one had a little 1/4''x1/4'' shiny spot with some balsa on it...which doesn't seem like much glue. Ha, ha I suppose it's wise to drop some CA on the hinges before you fly. Also, I'm wondering how many people are like ''yeah right you crashed it''. Ha, ha
Hmm - well if one flap came loose (separated from the wing due to the hinges coming loose) on the approach that side of the wing would lose lift and the loose flap would cause a lot of drag on that side. Both would tend to make that side of the wing drop. So did that side of the wing drop? Ed

RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
I will add a couple of comments here- there is a new Evolution 20GX 20cc (1.20 cu. in.) gas engine $279 that might be a possibility for this plane, if you don't already have an engine picked out. It comes with an inverted pitts muffler standard at this price. Also World Models has updated this plane so it now has fairings on the fuselage next to the wing so it looks a bit better. Ed

RE: 7c 2.4 throttle timer at low throttle?
I replaced the new 3004 servo that I had in the plane with another new 3004 servo, and the new servo does the same thing. I have the travel toward idle set at 50%. When I put the throttle to this point the servos both go to the desired position but then after about 20 seconds the servo goes to full travel in that direction with no stick movement. I timed it this time so I know it's about 20 seconds. Ed

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
I think the military scheme requirement is good because it is a tribute to WW1, 2, and the other "conflicts", "storms", etc (not to the purpose that these planes have since been used), and while several have made a good argument for accepting postwar schemes it just isn't the same to me. To me the best reason to accept the postwar/betweenwar schemes and planes is to show how respected the "warbirds" (both planes and pilots and the rest of the air force) have become for how they helped protect our freedom. The baffling that others have done seems to be most effective when you direct the air at the cylinder and out the back of the cowl. The rule for air flow that most say is you need twice as much area for the air to get out of the cowl as you allow for air to enter the cowl. Ed

RE: Best car for the hobby
The best/cheapest vehicle for this hobby is a Chrysler minivan. All 4 rear seats fold down so it's easy to fit planes in this vehicle, and easy to put the seats back up too. The new 3.6 liter engine gets good gas mileage too, and has strong acceleration for freeway entrances etc. with all 4 seats down you can put a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back laying flat. Ed

RE: *World Models 70
I had the 60 size top flite gold edition jug and their 60 size gold edition mustang (I had an early gold edition kit version of the mustang) and they both needed down trim as you describe. However I have not seen this on the other twm/world models mustangs planes that I have and am flying now. So I wondered if the other jugs were twm jugs. My twm 60 size mustang is a bit older (I've been flying it for 8 years now) but i kind of doubt they have changed it much from what I have seen in posts here. The GS mustang is maybe 5 years old and the newer versions might have changed a little but not very much either. Anyway thanks for your feedback - I have the twm p47 arf just like you have and was curious. Mine is still in the box though - I got delayed in assembling it some due to adapting to flying here in Texas after I moved here from Ohio a couple years ago. Ed

RE: *World Models 70
ORIGINAL: flycolorado Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but I thought I’d share my Jug just in case. It’s got a DLE30 and a Great Planes LiFe (2100mA) running everything. I used an ignition battery eliminator/optical kill for the motor to save weight and it came out at 11lbs 4Oz. CG is at 4 ¾ and it feels perfect, it fly’s light and with authority. I found that the elevator needed to be set up looking like it was a flat bottom airfoil, not a symmetrical as you would expect. We discovered this to be true with 2 other Jug’s at the field. I set it up symmetrical and ran out of down trim trying to get it to fly level on the maiden. Just put a ruler on the bottom of the horizontal stab and bring the tip of the elevator down close to the ruler. It’s no speed demon so don’t think the DLE is over powered but the climb outs are awe inspiring! flycolorado- Thanks for your post. what altitude are you flying? What prop do you have on the dle30? Seems like you are propped for thrust since you have unlimited vertical. Regarding your comment about the elevator trim - are the other two jugs also the twm (World Models) p47? I have their 60 size mustang and their GS mustang and neither of those need much down elevator trim from neutral at the cg that world models recommends. They both fly VERY well. Ed

RE: *** CLUB SUPER TIGRE ***
ORIGINAL: hsukaria I need advice tuning my ST G51. The past year or so I noticed that the midrange transition is very rich and I get a stumble, sometimes big surges (engine cuttng) while transitioning from idle to WOT while flying. It acts like it is very rich in the midrange. Sometime ago I loosened the 2 throttle barrel screws and rotated the throttle assembly very slightly clockwise to help lean it a bit. The low speed needle valve is set as lean as I can get it without sacrificing a good idle, the high speed needle is set just a bit rich from peak. So, should I rotate the throttle barrel clockwise some more? I am running 15% nitro with a medium plug, 11x7 prop and a MACs one-piece muffler. Performance is excellent except for the throttle transition. Thanks.
Ringed Tigers need to be adjusted to get the correct setting after they are broken in, so its normal for the carb to need readjusted as they go through breakin. The original muffler has the correct back pressure for the engine it comes with. Aftermarket mufflers often are not designed for the particular engine they are advertised/sold for so they don't give the correct back pressure thus it's hard to get good fuel feed and transition/midrange. 15% seems like a high nitro percent for a tiger - try 10%. RE: Top Flight P-51 1/5 scale hinge points
ORIGINAL: mesaflyer Hello, Building this plane from the kit. The plans say to use Robart heavy duty hinge points for all the control surfaces. This is fine for the flaps, but for the other control surfaces (ail, ele, rudder) they seem to be a little too large in diameter. There isn't much meat left in the control surfaces near the end of the control point (you can see this by looking at the cross section of the aileron plans). I'm afraid that if not drilled exactly centered, the hinge point might protrude from the surface and that there just isn't enough meat to hold them in place. I suppose I could cut off about 1/4'' and shorten them. I also bought the Great Planes medium size, but they seem to be a little small. They fit, and I think they would work fine, I'm just a little worried about their size. I wish there was a size in between the Robart and the GP. Just curious what others have use on their planes? Thanks
Robart has more than one size of hinge points - maybe you should consider a smaller Robart in the areas where the ones you have seem a little too big. Ed

RE: LiPo Life
My point is that the escs can be designed to avoid overdischarging the lipo and causing battery puffing and other issues. So why not redesign them to eliminate the problems? The technology is out there to do it. Plus it wouldn't cost much to include chargers that have the storage charge feature included with the RTF planes from Parkzone or others. As an engineer I'm certain it wouldn't add much cost to the escs - especially the higher priced escs. But I won't bother - the chinese would just copy it as soon as it was done, and the US government won't stop them so it would be a waste of my time to do it. So I will just do what you guys are doing and for my one parkzone mustang I will do whatever is easiest for me. For those who really want the hobby to move more to electric this needs to be pushed HARD because as I said in my previous post I'm sure a lot of prospective e-pilots haven gotten disgusted and quit when their batteries went puffy etc. So the hobby will continue to decline unless this kind of thing is eliminated from the hobby. A good post that clearly shows the problem is in part "Regarding puffing - or ballooning - LiPo packs, boy that's a tough lesson for people getting into electric. I know it was for me. I always thought you should let re-chargeable batteries sit fully charged... but then my LiPo packs smacked me upside the head like a balloon. So I bought a AC680 charger that has a "Storage" charge cycle on it putting the packs at about 3.81V / cell. I have 6 new battery packs, none of them are showing any puffing whatsoever. I wish I had ready this information before I lost some expensive LiPo packs." To me this is the perfect illustration of the problem - and of a pilot who was willing to bite the bullet and spend the money and time to figure it out and keep on flying - but a lot of other would just walk away and tell a bunch of others not to bother with this hobby. Just telling the VERY small percentage of e-pilots that end up reading these threads how dumb they are might make you feel better but it won't keep them in the hobby. This is the general theme of most of the posts I have read on this subject here and on other sites - if you don't know this it's your fault. Kind if sad I think. Ed

RE: LiPo Life
I have been told that you should not discharge a lipo more then 70% of its capacity - and that discharging over this will cause them to puff. I have also been told that discharging or using a battery that is not rated to give the current you want/are using will also cause puffing. This is confirmed by the guys at my field who regularly fly electric planes of a wide variety of sizes. The problem to me is that noone tells the new e-pilot this stuff, and so their batteries puff and they usually throw them out and get new ones and those puff etc etc etc. So why does this happen- seems like most airplane escs are set to draw the battery voltages down too far - or at least far enough that they puff and can become dangerous. And a lot of experienced e-pilots know this, so why don't the companies that make and sell escs design them so the batteries don't get damaged/puff? I will bet that there are many many people who see the batteries puff and get disgusted and either never get any more batteries or they throw the whole plane in the trash - and 99% of these people forget this hobby. Some hobby shops make sarcastic answers to these questions - seems like they know it's a problem but they expect you to magically know this stuff when the design of the escs could be changed to prevent this. There are digital meters that are sold that tell you how much of the battery charge has been used. So its clear that the technology is out there to fix this issue - the escs need to be designed so they won't discharge the batteries too far. What do you guys think? Right? Wrong? Some other fix instead? Ed

RE: Giant Scale crop dusters?
Mosquitoes in Texas sometimes carry the Rocky Mountain Fever, which in some cases kills the person they bite/infect. So killing them here is to me an absolute necessity. But spraying a big enough area to keep them away from you would take a chunk of money and time, and a club doesn't usually have that to commit to that - unless one of the club members gets it and needs serious medical care - then the club will get more serious about it.
