Any of the modern aerobatic models from Extreme flight, Aeroworks, Pilot RC, EG etc.... will do, pick your favorite and fly, fly, fly.... But as TOM suggested above, skip the 80cc and jump right to 100cc, the cost difference is minimall

Should be OK, but that's not the way I would go. Most people, including myself, who fly 50cc and larger airplanes, use a dual battery / dual switch setup on the receiver and a separate switch for the ignition. A dual battery setup for the receiver is cheap insurance.

RE: Hitec or Savox TG servo???
ORIGINAL: Foxy
ORIGINAL: jbooker82 Take the top off the servo there is more than 1 gear. There are quite a few and they are powered by a tiny electric motor so yes what ever weight savings TI gives you it is deffinatly worth it.
I'll say it again; Ti servo gears are a stupid gimmick. Believe me. People will take performance over weight any day of the week, hence why the 5th scale racers use Tonegawa modified servos which are double the weight of a normal 'quarter scale' servo. Here's an image of the tone servo in my 5th scale MT, and its servo family too. The servo on the far right is an ACE ds1015 looking like it's in the land of the giants. Once again, please understand, whether the gears are made of steel or Ti is absolutely the last frikkin thing you care about when selecting a servo.
You are absolutely wrong, I have used the JR8611, the Hitec HS-5964, the JR8711 and I will absolutely say that the Titanium gears on tHe HS-5955, HS-7955 stay like new for 100s of flights on a 35% aerobatic airplane with no noticable gear play, where as the steel gears on the old Hitec and the JR servos develop slop. Maybe the slop in the gears is not noticable on a car, but it is definitly noticable on a airplane and you can see it by wiggling the flight control.

RE: Charger question
I wouldn't buy it, I think you should save money over the next couple months and buy a good charger that is much more capable and can charge and discharge batteries. I feel you would be wasting your money. In the meantime use your walwart until you can afford a better charger. There are numerous good chargers on the market, search here at RCU on chargers and go to the appropriate websites to research them. Good luck

RE: Starting Gasoline Engines - Safely
I agree, the number one safety rule (far more important than any other) is to tie down or have someone hold the tail during engine start. Myself and the guys I fly with all have 33% to 35% aerobatic airplanes with engines ranging from 80cc to 120cc, we all hold for each other and never intentially let each other start our engines without someone or something holding the tail. I had a incident one time that I was at the flying field by myself while assembling my airplane for flight. Another guy just so happened to drive up just before I was ready to start my engine. I had decided (unwisely) to start my engine without the tail holddown in place. The other guy asked me if I wanted him to hold the tail. I said it is not necessary but go ahead. So he holds the tail and I start the airplane. Well as soon as the engine starts it goes to full throttle and my radio had no effect. So I get to the switch and shut the engine down. If that guy would not have driven up and asked to hold the tail, this incident could have been a catastrophy. BTW, the airplane was a 35% Extra 260 with a 3W-106 swinging a 28 inch prop. After the incident I checked the throttle servo and the gears were sheared, I had initially turned on my radio and airplane with the radio set to the wrong airplane. Very few people us a Megatron or any other type of starter on their gas airplanes, and personally I don't see any need to invest in one. He states in his article "An easy-to-install, but often-neglected, safety device is the engine kill switch". I have never seen a gas engine airplane without a kill switch.
ORIGINAL: DougV
ORIGINAL: AussieDom I agree that the 8fg would do everything I need but I'm not a fan of the looks and am happy to spend more on a 12fg, however, given that the 8fg has been upgraded to do almost everything the 12 does, and given the 12 has been out since 2006, I'm thinking the 12 will get an upgrade soon or be superseded and if so I'd rather wait. Do you think that this is likely to happen within the next 12 months?
Yes. I'm pretty sure that we will see a big upgrade to the 12 series radios soon. When it comes to mixes and programming, the 12FG is way ahead (more advanced) than the 8FG. The 12FG also has better gimbals, but the 8FG is faster (Letancy) than the 12FG. I also like that the 8FG is lighter compared to the 12. My opinion, Doug.
I've never played with a 12Fg so I don't know what the mixing options look like, but I do have a 8FG and I believe for 98% of us, it will do more than any of us will ever need.

RE: What size gauge wire do I need
The more current draw you have the more the voltage will be reduced over longer wire lengths. If you are using standard servos, 20awg should be fine. If using high end servos such as HS-7955 or JR 8711 you would be safer going to 16 or 18 awg wire.

RE: glow plug heater charging info
Most glow plug heaters come with their own charger. You didn' tell us what charger you have. Most modern chargers do not require you to set the voltage, it automatically detects it. 400mA would be a good charge rate. You could go higher if in a hurry.

RE: Testing Dual Battery Setup with Voltmagic
A DA-50 will draw about 800-900 mAmps at full throttle. Much less at idle. You didn't state how long of flights you do. I know on my 35% Extra330SC, I use about 250mA per 8 minute flight (combination 3D and IMAC). 400mA on a 50cc airplane seems very high to me, unless you are doing 25 minute flights. I don't use a voltwatch and no-one I fly with does either so I can't speak to that. For me, I load test each of my A123 with 1 amp load prior to each flight. The 1 amp load only drops the voltage by a small amount (typical reading is 6.36V). If everything was good in your system, there is no way you will drag down the voltage of an 2300mA A123 to 4.6 volts just by moving the sticks. These batteries can take a tremendous load without dragging down the voltage. On a fresh 2300 A123, I can put a 3 amp load on it and still hold over 6 volts. My airplane has 2 each HS-7955, 4 each HS-5955, 1 HS-7980 and 1 each HS-985.

RE: Packs need replaced. What should I get
If you choose to stick with Nimh or Nicd. The Elite 1300mA 2/3C are good cells, any of the Sanyo AA up to the 2150mA cells are good. Sanyo 1100mA Nicds are good. But, since you are buying new receiver batteries anyway, the 1100mA A123 would work the best. The only downside is that you would probably have to buy a new charger. If you went this route, I think you would be extremely happy. They are the highest quality batteries you can buy, have good longevity and can be recharged in 15 minutes. Below is a couple of links for good places to buy A123, there are others, but these are the ones I've use. http://www.hangtimes.com/a123_packs.html http://www.radicalrc.com/category/A123-Cells-Packs-199
ORIGINAL: coomarlin One other question. I noticed on Hangtime's website that they offer RX packs using numerous types of battery cells. In the old days, I believe most RX packs were based on AA sized cells. Thats what I've always used. Are these still preferred or are their better options that produce equal performance at a lighter weight by using alternative cells?
It all depends on what you fly. The AA size work fine for everything up to 30cc. Above that, the sub C are better since they can deliver more current without the voltage dropping.
