RE: DLE111 Hard Start
I had the same problem with mine. Nearly tore my arm off flipping the thing Engine will not start after popping on choke What I found to be a solution follows.... Put my choke on a servo so I could proportionally control the movement between open and closed After popping the engine on choke - I move the control so that I have less than 1/4 choke in place for the real start. A bit of choke is required then for a real start. It cannot be no choke or the engine will not run as you have found - or it will run and die. My engine would then start pretty well with a bit of choke on - then as it warms up during the first few seconds I slowly back out the last bit of choke and I am off to the races. Finding this solution cost me most of the season last year and I bought a DA-120 as a result. I put the DLE 111 on my backup IMAC plane and now have the same problem regardless and now start it as I describe. Also my carb will not start for the first flight of the day without shooting some fuel into the carb before starting. If it is dry then I can flip my arm off and it will hardly start. That is what I found out Hope it helps. Good luck.

could you let me know where you got the written knowns? I fly sportsman and was looking for a written description and name of the maneuvers. You have it all but is there a text file I could get so I could record my own audio call notes for my mp3 player? I have one built as a virtual caller for practice. Let me know Thanks Great app

After seeing the sony recorder in your picture I bought the 50 buck version to do the same thing. Unfortunately the better Sony recorder has microscopic forward and back switches with no exposed pc board trace points to solder anything to. So $50 down the drain. Will try another cheap mp3 player to hopefully find something to solder a remote advance switch to. Not a happy camper. Really want a working virtual caller to help my practice. Arrrgggg.

RE: HANGAR 9 BEAST
Hey great to hear about your Beast. Would you say it is more of a 3D plane or better for IMAC? I am looking for a really good 35% IMAC plane to replace a RIP AW Extra 300. Have met QuiQue many times and seen him fly many times. Great guy. I would love your opinion on the 3D vs IMAC aspect of this plane. I have a DA 120 ready for a plane and want to put it in a good airframe. One question if you would not mind I have a limited height clearance in my trailer so could you tell me how tall off the ground the top of the tail and the canopy are when in transport mode? The EF 110" YAK will not fit in my trailer so... That would be a great help. Also precision flying comments on the plane would be very much appreciated. Thanks very much.

Oh yeah. I am frustrated. Will order a Walbro Carb for the DLE-111 tomorrow if I can get one. But I am going to go for a second plane. I still have my old 2.6 meter Comp Arf. I will put an engine in it and have it as a second bird and forget the small planes I have been dicking around with. They never fly as well as the big ones and I like clean smooth flying - Bigger is better. I always end up flying the big ones anyway because they just fly better. Just gotta get the DLE to start. Thanks

Great suggestion on replacing the carb. Is it the same carb as the DA-100 or the DA-100L? Any difference there? Will try to get one shipped to me later this week (if I can get one fast enough). What about needle settings for the walbro carb on the DLE-111?? Any suggestions? I will have one day to swap the carb, test fly and then the contest will be the next day. Any help would be great. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Thanks for the tip on the replacement carb. Took the plane out today and could not get it to even pop on choke. Literally flipped it till my arm felt like rubber then a friend at the field tried for me as well. Really frustrated to miss the only IMAC in driving range this year because of this problem. New Aeroworks 35% Extra. When the engine was running it was flying great. Will call VVRC tomorrow and see the best course of action and if that does not work then I will get the walbro carb you gents suggested. Thanks gents.

Thanks just moved the choke action off the switch to my other side rotating lever on my Futaba 10C. Gives me detents for choke at open, closed and half but full proportional motion in between. Will try again tomorrow. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Great suggestions However, I was foolish enough to set up my chokes operation on a one position switch. I will try to clean the carb now and then will try to figure out if I can put a mix in place to get a half throttle setting or move the function to one of my slides. Thanks gentlemen.

RE: Stumpted by DLE-111 starting behavior - Need advice PLS
One more note. I have tried starting the engine after choking it - with every possible throttle setting. Idle to full throttle. No joy. That said I got 5-6 great flights in today but almost pulled tendons in my arm flipping this sucker. At the end of the day I was just trying to restart the engine to find some kind of technique I could use for the IMAC contest next week. That is when it got even harder to start. I also tried killing the engine between start attempts with both closed throttle and my ignition kill switch. Trying to get some repeatable behavior if possible Again no joy. Thanks again to anyone who can give me some guidance here.

RE: Stumpted by DLE-111 starting behavior - Need advice PLS
Was extremely careful with my servo linkage and end point adjustments for the choke servo. Used maximum mechanical advantage for the closed state and the choke opens and closes well. The problem is the engine will not run for more than several seconds when I try to start it normally with the choke open after a standard choke action. The choke does work fine and I get the standard few seconds of run with the choke on as I see as typical of gassers. When I pull the choke off and then try to start it - it runs only for a few seconds and then dies. Changing throttle during that time has no effect. If I fake out the engine by choking it and then while it is still running choked - pull the choke off - then it runs like a champ. Trouble is it takes 3-4 minutes of work to get that to happen. Could it be too rich on the low end and that cause the engine to die before it gets itself to a stable state? Thanks again for any help here.

RE: Stumpted by DLE-111 starting behavior - Need advice PLS
Believe yes but will check tomorrow. The engine does choke/start reliably. The problem is getting the engine to stay running with the choke off. When I do trick it into starting (by using the choke initially) it runs extremely well. Hence my confusion. Thanks

Stumpted by DLE-111 starting behavior - Need advice PLS
OK new engine - DLE-111. Ran and started fine at first. Great power. However now after 3 weekends of running it will not start without having the choke on first and then quickly flicking the choke off while it is kicking over from the choked flips. If I try to start it normally (Choke off) after a normal choked flip/fire up... it just runs for a couple of seconds and then dies right out. I have almost pulled my arm off flipping this engine. When I am able to get it to start (by basically flicking off the choke during a choke run...I have a servo on choke so this is just a transmitter switch) it runs great with no real issues. It is restarting and starting that is the issue. First start of the day is like 20 flips to get even the choked action to work. Restarts are killing me. Have had only about a gallon and a half of fuel through it so far. IMAC contest next weekend and only 1-2 minutes for starting at a contest. No way I can do that as it stands now. So normal starting action only achieves a 2-3 second run and then the engine dies like it is running out of fuel. Moving the trottle during that time has no effect. Have to trick the engine into starting by transitioning from choke to no choke while it has fuel in the carb. Have to keep going back and forth from choke start attempt to a no choke kick to clear the engine of fuel again. Tried new plugs. New Hondas from VVRC Went from 32:1 oil mix to 40:1 Pennzoil Air Cooled Oil Tried richening the low end. Thought it may be starved for fuel. Did not help at all. Suggestions please. By the way I am at 5000 feet north of denver. Never seen a gas engine behave this way before. Thanks for any help.

RE: 100cc Extra 300 ARF QB
This may be a help to some of you building the extra 300 100cc size from AeroWorks. I wanted the lightest dashboard I could for IMAC and found a picture of a real Extra 300 rear cockpit dash, cropped it and then morphed it back square. I printed it out on photo paper using GIMP the free image editing software. Fit perfectly on the back cockpit dashboard. Only weight was the photo paper. Here is the image. Enjoy.

RE: Finished my Avro Arrow.
Kondor told me it has a fiberglass fuse and bult up wings. Should be sweet. The original Arrow did Mach 1.96 in 1954 so it was extremely sweet as well. If you look back at the speed of the American jets at the time it was a rocket ship. They killed the program 6 days before another test flight with an engine that had twice the thrust. It would have done Mach 2.5 a week later basically. Many design features went into US planes when it was cancelled. Analog fly by wire system with force feedback joystick - same tech as the F-16 but this was back in 1954/1955 Modular weapons reload pod. Concealled missle bays - now on the stealth fighters and F-22. High pressure hydraulics that were used on the B-2. You could go on and on. Escape pod ejection like the F-111 original design. It was a star that was literally killed by idiots.

I live at 5000 feet of altitude so power is my concern as well as keeping it light. Are you just going to belly land it in? It is just that we have very little soft grass in Colorado. Thanks
