RE: Miss Wind 50 Trimming Problems
Moving CG back does not change trim setting as you might think it should. You need a adjust the wing with positive incidense. Its not as hard as you might think but to get it right it will take several adjustments. You need to file out the opening in the fusalage where the pins go thru then you need to make new donuts and glue them into the fusalage over the existing ones until you get it dialed in. Best of luck Evan

RE: a123 or life batteries rx and tx
I have 2 stock battery packs for my SD10. I cycled them as the instructions in the manual said to. I get 17, 10 minute flight per pack before I have to recharge. I just run them down all the way to the alarm buzzer then recharge it. Evan

RE: Aries incedence numbers
IDK? The Aries I had was the best flying plane id ever owned. It flew with a neutral elevator and I had a piece of velcro for a shim under the wing for a slight bit of positive incidence. Flew straight as an arrow. Knife edge was dead straight. I had zero mix in the plane. I was going to add just a touch of down elevator with low throttle to straighten out my downline as there was a slight pull to the canopy but the plane was lost in a misfortunate accident.

RE: TALON EXTREME by Randy Hicks Designs
Sharp looking plane... I like the lines. My only concern with a one piece wing is it better be dead on straight and incidence better right on the money because adjustability is limited no? I have an Oxai plane with a one piece wing and the incidence if off the mark. Beautiful plane but flies like crap.

RE: Ideas for an intro pattern class
I talked to a couple of guys at the club about why they don't try flying pattern. They are interested but the thing they said was a 2 day contest was to much of a time commitment to hit a contest for them. With that being said why not fly all 6 sportsman rounds in one day and make the sportman class a one day event.

RE: Ideas for an intro pattern class
I think the biggest reason why those on the fence don't give it a shot is because they are really not sure what's expected even after reading up about it all. Nobody wants to go out there and make a fool out of themselves. That is why it should be simplied to a level a guy could read up about it in his AMA handbook, practice it on his own if he wishes till one builds up enough confidence to compete in a contest. And the manuevers should all be basic stunts a trainer could do it. I'm sure clubs all over the country would pick up on it and have a club class only contest just for fun. Scoring should be kept basic 0-10 scores so no computer system would be needed to calculate scores. Evan

RE: What are the pitfalls using LIFE batteries??
I want to use them in my 2 meter pattern planes. Right now I still fly glow but I use 2 cell lipo's and a regulator for the reciever pack. I had one of my 2 meter planes almost go in due to a suspect regulator. Im not sure what the exact cause of my lock out was. I replaced the regulator, switch, and reciever and all has been ok. No one in my group of pattern flyers use them. A member at my club tells me they actually discharge better than the lipo's plus I don't need the regulator. I seen them in the tower catalog but I wasn't sure if the LIFE and A123 are the same or if one was better than the other.

I was reading another thread that said there were pitfalls with using LIFE batteries. I'd like to know what they are because I was wanting to start using them over safety concerns with LIPO packs. Thanks Evan

RE: Proposed 2013/2014 Sequences
I agree with Joe and Arch. We are not advocating adding a class just modifying what we have. I always hated the name Intermediate as a class name. Get rid of the name intermediate and change it back to what it was Sportsman. I never liked the class named novice either. I advocate we change the name novice or what is now sportman to Club Class. When I here Joe call it club class, I think AMA club class. It has an AMA ring to it in my ears and I think it is good for the sport. No turnaround in Club Class either. If you find it not challenging then one can move up in class. To many beginners it is challenging and it is also a level playing field at the club level that all can understand and participate in. If we do this there will be a unity between AMA and NSRCA that will promote growth in our sport. I firmly believe this. Just My $.2 Evan Also if you all don't like the 2 loops with 1/2 rolls in the proposed Advanced pattern then change the manuever to a triangle with 2 half rolls in opposite directions on top or 2 half rolls on top. I am just happy we get a new pattern sequence to fly! You guys are doing a great job btw!

RE: My suggestion to increase pattern participation
Arch I agree whole heartedly with you. Funny....I tried doing three rolls last weekend! It was quite laughable! Funny you bring that up. Yea just coaching a newbie into doing centered manuevers we are introducing them to turnaround manuevers. I just think we shouldn't burden the novice competitor with scoring them at that level since it is hard for them to understand what is expected. The concept of a centered manuever is easy for one to understand who may have no coach or experience. Easy for us experienced pilots to think a newbie should be able to pull it off..... I'd love to see this sport get bigger and bigger and it won't if we don't change what we are doing. Here's a suggestion ...lets make turnaround manuevers centered manuevers then. Evan

RE: My suggestion to increase pattern participation
I dont think making sportsman class easier is dumbing down the class because the mission of the Sportsman class should be regarded as an introduction to precision aeobatics. Lets face it Sportsman is very difficult for one just starting out. If all the manuevers were centered then a beginner could practice on his own at his pace until he is ready to hit a contest. Once confident to come out to a contest and give it a go we can mentor them into the basics of turnaround. But if guys think its to hard for them they are not going to enter contests. Since we are a SIG of the AMA I like the idea of calling sportman Club Class. When clubs have their funfly's they could introduce pattern to there members thru the Club Class and thus maybe we can get more participation at our contests. Evan

My suggestion to increase pattern participation
This is just my 2 cents worth of suggestion that I think would increase pattern participation. Take it for what you think it is worth but last week at my club there were a few newby wannabies to pattern that were introduced to me. I printed out some sportsman call sheets and manuever descriptions and handed them out to the guys. I figured Id help them with flying the pattern and whatnot and get them to attend the St. Charles IL contest. I know once they attend a contest a certain percentage will be hooked but the problem I ran into is that the guys found the call sheets and manuever descriptions by themselves intimidating and they told me that they didn't think they were ready to try it. I understand there stance about being intimidated but the not wanting to try part I don't. When I decided back in the early 90's to try pattern I grabbed a call sheet and had my friend Andy call the manuevers for me. As basic as the manuevers were I could not make it thru 3 or 4 manuevers before I broke the pattern and I was discouraged somewhat by this. It didnt stop me from trying though. I went to a local contest to see what It was about. I went without an airplane because I was just going to watch. I got there early and got to talking with the contest director and he talked me into driving home to get a plane and try it out. I was reluctant because I could not complete the pattern but I decided to do it anyway. After returning with my plane I was finally able to watch someone fly thru the pattern to completion. Where I am from there was no one doing pattern so I had no mentor to help me out. To my surprise my first round I was able to complete the pattern successfully! I actually was able to fly the entire pattern without breaking out of it. Each subsequent round I saw improvement in my flying and I was hooked. So my suggestion is this. I think we should get rid of the Sportsman class in favor of a beginners Classic Pattern Class. A beginner class in which is not turn around but all centered manuevers. We could call it a Club Class if you will. My old-timer friend Andy said that back in the day it was not unusual to have 50 or 60 guys show up for a contest. If we can find a way to make it less intimidating to get these guys out there, a certain percentage will get hooked with the sport. Evan

RE: Chip Hyde Split with CA Model
Ok time for a group hug everyone! Marcelo next time i think you should just refund the money and this whole thread would have never happened. All manufactures have difficulties with quality. Im sure of that. Especially when you use outside contractors. The difference is how you deal with them. Ca Models as far as I know has a good reputation and I'm sure will produce wonderful planes in the future. Cmon lets bring it in for a giant group hug!
