RE: What size of RC planes do you like?
I fly anything from a .010 size Li'l Roughneck (remember those???) to giant scale and anything in between. Gas, glow or electric powered...it doesn't matter to me! My wife says that rc aircraft is a sickness with me...just a sickness! I reply, "Well, it's better than alcoholism!" BTW, I have been building and flying rc for over 35 years and will never quit! JR Hobbies kits
Many years ago, a friend and I had a company in Illinois called JR Hobbies (for Jerry & Roger Hobbies) Among other 40 to 60 size sport and scale planes, I designed a few 1/2a kits that we produced and marketed. One of them was a scaled down version of my .40 size airplane called the Whoot. The 1/2a version I named the Half A Whoot (1/2a Whoot) Another was a scaled down version of the 40 size Fokker D-8 that I named the B-4. (1/2a D-8) These kits were of balsa/ply construction and used the Ace foam wings. Very durable and fun to fly with a .049-.051! We even ran the Cox .051 RC with muffler on one of the Half A Whoots. The Muffler didn't work well (it was leaky and loud) but the rc carb worked...kinda... I still have some Ace foam wings and have been thinking that I may need to build a few of our old kits and electrify them. Nostalgia, you know... We had a lot of fun with the business and even had a booth on the main floor at the Toledo Expo for 4 years. Does anyone remember JR Hobbies? Jerry (AKA Jake)

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Many, MANY years ago (about 34!) the Sig Smith Miniplane was my second airplane. The first was a 3 channel Sig Kadet. So, I went from a trike gear 3 channel trainer to a 4 channel tail draggin' biplane! (I had a great instructor!) Anyway, that little bipe with a ST-45 was a great little flyer. This thread has got me the itch to build another, so I guess I will need to find a kit someone has laying around that they are not planning on building... Jake

RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
Nice Tripe, WacoNut! I attended Frank Ryder's Aerodrome '92 (full size WWI aircraft fly-in). There were 6 Fokker DR-I replicas in different color schemes. I was able to talk with the pilots and learned a lot about the handling characteristics of the triplane. Now, some of the tripes had steerable tailwheels (and none with the radial engines) and used both the paved runway and grass for take-offs and landings. When the pilots were lined up to take off, they would hold full down elevator before powering up. When the tail came up, the elevator was released and the rest of the take-off was uneventlful. Landings did not pose a problem that I saw. One of the pilots flew his Fokker DR-I from Oregon to Aabama. I asked him if he made many stops for fuel, he told me no. But he did stop to rest his right leg and arms. It seems that he had to hold a lot of right rudder for straight and level flight, and was always moving the joystick around to keep it going where he wanted. He could never relax! The aircraft was such a great fighter due to it being so unstable...according to him. Jake

RE: ARF's are Kits?
ORIGINAL: rambler53
ORIGINAL: huck1199 I have had ARFs that are more challenging to assembly than kits.
Name it? Doesn't exist as far as I know. Than again there is junk out there I know better not to buy. Neither are really challenging if you think about it. I never felt more relaxed and received more enjoyment than building a kit. That goes above everything in fact, except for the maiden flight. That is the full reward right there. If you never try it, you will be missing out on a great moment in the hobby that I can't get the same satisfaction from any ARF I ever touched. The more you put into something the more you get out of it, is a common phrase that applies to this. I fly outside AMA clubs with people who also hate AMA clubs, therefore we're all cool there, and smile every weekend we meet. Incident free for 12 years and counting. Quit your club if they're too political and self impressed. We did.
I hope that you thank the AMA for getting & keeping the frequencies that you use and fighting for your right to fly your planes while you are out with the other AMA haters. Jake

If you are interested, you can get a 1/4 scale kit and plans here. http://www.kitcutters.com/Nex/NexSuperFli.htm I have been thinking lately of ordering the kit & plans and building an electric version of the Super Fli. Maybe I will... Smooth Landings, Jake FEAR CD BTW, many, many years ago, I built 2 Super Fli radio control airplane kits. One was by Concept models (40 size) and the other by Bridi (60 size).

Whoooooooo.....eeeeeeeeee! This last Thursday, the runway at the ARCS Mustang Field was widened 12 1/2', lengthened 30' and resurfaced along with the staging area just in front of the ramada/pit area. RE: Ever wonder where previous RCU members went?
I have been around since RCO (Gee! That was a long time ago!) and remember chatting every night with many guys. Immungoy, from the Phillipines, was a very interesting guy. I was chatting with him one night and I asked if he was at work. When he told me "Yes", I told him to watch out for the boss. To which he replied, "I am the boss!" Funny!!! I wonder what happened to him... When I was chatting on RCO, I lived in Illinois and would chat which a guy in Phoenix, AZ. Wouldn't you know that my family and I ended up moving to Phoenix and this guy is a friend to this day and we fly together regularly. Thanks RCO and RCU. It has been much fun over the years and I have many friends due to you. Art was one of them.

RE: Hitting a bird
I hit a bird once with my Tower Hobbies Uproar. While doing quick touch & goes, I saw something flash by my plane and looked back to see a bird spiraling down into the tall cotton with only one wing. After landing my plane, I found no damage to it. The prop must have sliced through the poor thing's wing at the shoulder. I felt bad about it.
