RE: Are you scared of nitro engines?
^ No need for the emails Steve, you can just say it on the forums...
stevelandron@softcom.net to me show details 11:03 PM (13 minutes ago) Morons? Where do you get off? What are you 17? Adults? This forum had a question regarding Nitro fears, which I brought up Nitro fears in conjunction with warranted fears regarding electrics. Adults, I think you''re unclear on the concept. I guess after just five years in the Hobby and 6000+ posts you''ve got all the answers. Unbelievable Steve
No, I don't have all the answers.. I was only directing that towards those who chose to go off topic for a page regarding nitro and electric.. Check out the pg before you posted.. Morons may have been the wrong word, but you'll get the idea when you actually read through the thread... Got a problem? Drink a beer and get over it.

This is strictly IMO, but it just doesn't look right at all for me... SC trucks are full bodied and closed wheeled, they look ridiculous on MTs..

RE: Are you scared of nitro engines?
Why do a couple morons have to turn this into a nitro V electric debate? Cmon guys, were all adults here.... - actually wait, I forget sometimes RCU is full of pre-pubescent kids [:D]... ANYWAYS back on topic [8|] Sure, when I got into the hobby at the age of 12- the most intimidating part for me was breaking in my first engine... Another time I actually scared myself, when I installed a crappy failsafe on my Savage 25, which shorted out my radio system and made the truck go WOT in my hand when I picked it up- that was fun [:)]... Other than that, its been a pleasant experience overall. When my gear is set up properly, and runs- its a pleasure getting out with someone/ a few ppl and doing some bashing at a good site, as well as making some kick @$$ vids to show off our skillz in the dirt/sand. *Good idea for a thread Cummins*

RE: BEST LRP MOTOR FOR XL
LOL... Still have skeptics about my claims I see, times will never change I see. Tell you what, once I get my spur problem fixed (hopefully quite soon)... I'll break out the camera, and show what this engine with 9.5 gallons can do, with my first attempt hack job mod package, and how it can sit and idle all day long without issue, and with a blip of the throttle it will snap without bogging. Then, I'll take the LRP .30 and fire it up... You think I come here on my spare time to talk trash? I've made maybe 10 posts in the last 2 months here, I barely get to break out the R/Cs and have sold a lot of what I own.. I don't care what you or anyone else thinks, I have attempted to give an honest opinion about the engine... I'll just make it simple and take a vid of both engines running, simple as that.. (Once again, IF I can resolve the problem with my ST stripping spurs... either clutch setup, mount, or crankcase are causing the problem)..

RE: BEST LRP MOTOR FOR XL
^ I look for that same kind of experience.. I don't need a pro engine, but I do have expectations... I think shoestringracer's particular LRP .30 is a lemon, something is wrong with it because it goes through fuel fast and wont have a steady idle no matter what, always stalls after more than 30 secs of idling.. My STS .30 on the otherhand, after I stripped my 10th spur on my Savage (something is tweaked in the mounting/ clutch).. I let it idle for half a tank.... 15-20 mins of pure idling while we ran his other Savage... Thats the experience I expect, reliability, easy tuning, easy starting, excellent power. The LRP is horrible to restart once warm, I don't know if its all- or just this one but it goes through way too much fuel, idling is horrible, and lastly- holds high RPM for a while after coming off a fast pass. Those are the issues I've encountered.. I have no bias towards any engine, I just want something that fits the previously mentioned requirements- the LRP we are running, fails pretty badly. The only area it shines in is torque, the engine has pure gobs of it on the low and mid range.. My truck is light for a Savage, now also running 2WD with the front gutted.. Anything more than 1/3rd throttle even when hitting the second gear shift, it lifts the wheels.. 2nd gear wheelies on any surface are possible with half throttle, thats where I actually enjoy driving it... Until it flips over and has 15 secs till it shuts off, then we spend 5 mins letting it cool to restart [:@]. Tom.

RE: BEST LRP MOTOR FOR XL
Supertib got some of our problems... That thing LOVES to keep spinning at high RPM after a high speed pass.. Idling is unreliable, it dislikes starting when warm.. The one he has especially has major problems idling, something is up cause that thing wont idle worth a crap- and we've tried everything.. Plugs are O'Donnell's.. Fuel is Byrons Gen 2. We've run a Tsais side pipe (not sure which), and tried the HPI Polished on it.. Similar performance with both really. Only cool thing is that it lifts the wheels of my Savage on every throttle input, 2nd gear wheelies at the shift are waaaaay too common with 17/49 gearing haha, thats about as much fun as we get from it.. It DRINKS gas, not even funny... I need to stick my STS in my truck when I get the issues fixed about stripping spurs, but I'm pretty sure the LRP goes through gas at least 20% quicker...

Me and shoestringracer have been running the LRP .30 for quite a bit... It has good power and excellent torque/ midrange, but the damn thing has SO many problems.. Will not run right worth a crap, top end if falls on its face.. It drinks fuel at 2X the rate of my STS .30, yuck. I know people have claimed this is a good engine, but thats the experience I've had with the .30 so far.

RE: Savage XL - 60 days of hell
That IS a good idea, me likes! I personally use oven cleaner- if I use Traxxas fuel, my one way starts slipping within 3 tanks. With Byrons/ O'Donnell's- takes 1-2 gallons (engine has 9 gallons, OWB never slipped till around 4th gallon). Still on the original OWB.

RE: DONE WITH NITRO
Traxxas engines have crap carbs that make them hard to tune and leak like mothers... My TRX 2.5 was my first nitro engine, that thing would not tune for @($2... Me being a noob 6 yrs ago I didn't know what to do about it (sealing), so I just ran it with smoke coming out of the head (probably over 350F).. I will say that they are durable engines, I ran my engine lean 60% of the time and it still made it to 9 gallons before losing compression.

RE: Kyosho MFR- little write up for those that are curious
Eric- Surprisingly, there are a decent amount of replacements parts available for this truck- I've noted several sites that carry most of the parts that would break for this truck- so support isn't too bad at all- at least not anywhere near as bad as for the previous Kyosho MTs. Yeah, I'll definitely give the truck a run- but hopefully not hard enough to break anything, as this is an investment I'll probably lose money on. I bought the truck for $170 shipped, it has over $60 in brand new replacement parts that the buyer didn't really mention in the auction. Then there is the truck, which looks like its been used for 3 gallons max, just bashed hard. The engine has great pinch, starts easily, idles well, since I couldn't put it through its paces, all I can comment on is that it has mediocre low end snap- but builds torque quickly with just a small grab of the trigger. For sure, I'll replace the plug, return to factory settings, and if need be- seal the engine up, though I checked for air bubbles in the lines and there were none. See about the drivetrain, I'd agree- but the previous owner already destroyed one of the diff output shafts, so you already know its weak if that happens with the RTR engine [;)]. If one could possible transplant beefier components from another Kyosho vehicle/ etc. - it would be an awesome truck. I believe Kyosho sells upgrade universals for the truck, so the issue may be easily remedied. The transmission is beyond awesome, its less than half the size of the Traxxas and HPI transmissions AND has 2 speeds with FWD/NTRL/REV- you can't beat that! Its going to be so awesome in my project, definitely worth the wait. [:D] Tom.

RE: Kyosho MFR- little write up for those that are curious
I ran the truck today, it starts extremely easily. Starting in neutral is hassle free, as you don't have to have your foot on or blocking a tire so the truck wont run away from you when you blip the throttle hard. The touch starter is a neat feature, much easier than the Traxxas EZ start. When my starter battery started to drain, it sounded like a real car cranking over slowly- awesome haha. The engine is having a problem running, it runs fine with the igniter on it, even with it off its fine until you apply over 1/4 throttle. I tried taking it richer because it seemed lean, but it would stall even quicker. Suggestions? When I put this thing in neutral, I can stand there and rev it all day long [:D], its beyond cool- I love it. The suspension is extremely soft, too soft for any jumping- it will literally bottom out from 3ft with almost max preload applied. The steering radius is pretty bad, the previous owner installed a Traxxas waterproof steering servo which does the job well, but the throw is just incomplete. The driveshafts scare me, I was way too generous in my assumption, they look barely 3mm in diameter for the central shafts. Thats it for today- more to come as I try to get the engine running properly. Kyosho MFR- little write up for those that are curious
So I figured since there is little real world information out there about this truck, I'd do a little write up. The story goes, that I've been hunting MFRs since their release for their very compact transmissions- the smallest transmission made with reverse and neutral as a plus. This is for my 1/8 4 stroke car project for maximum realism. While I will be ripping the tranny out and parting the truck out on ebay, I figured I might as well have some fun with it before I do just to see how it runs. I got this truck off ebay used for $170 shipped with about $40 in new spare parts, included stock body (trashed), and a Pro-line Ford series pick up. The truck itself, looks like its been fairly used to say the least. First impressions of the truck- extremely light, looks like it has the potential to kill every other MT on the track. Seriously, this thing is 2lbs lighter stock than a T-maxx/Revo- and it has an extra servo for the transmission as well as motor assisted start similar to Traxxas' easy start. The shocks are very beefy for a 1/10 MT like this, I run a 4 shock setup on my Savage and these dwarf them substantially. The transmission, AWESOME! It is very small in construction, but gives FWD/N/Reverse- you can't beat that! The main gripe about this truck, is while it is extremely light- the driveline looks puny to me. The center dogbones can't have more than a 5mm diameter, and thats a generous assumption. The ring and pinion are spiral cut, they look very small, but should be durable because of their construction. Toe links are thin, and the a-arms look like they could use some more meat on them- but still satisfactory. The weak driveline was proven already, because I bought the truck with a broken front diff outdrive- a $5 part. Overall, I can't wait to run the truck since its been the first new vehicle in my house for a while, and its 4lbs lighter than my Savage- should be fun... [>:] If this truck had a beefier drivetrain, I'd buy a new one and go big block on it, it would seriously be the best MT sleeper out there, by tearing out the electronic starter, third servo, and going FWD only on the tranny with a big block- this truck would be formidable on the track or in any conditions- except bashing.. I need to put it together cause the seller shipped it with the engine uninstalled as well as some other minor things, so hopefully I will be running it and provide pics tomorrow or the day after. Tom.

RE: Port and Polishing a new 18ss engine.
You arent going to get any noticeable gains from just smoothing out the ports.. Open them, cut the flow channels, round the bottom of the sleeve, and polish the whole thing.. Go to the RCU engine forums and read the article on porting a nitro engine, they base it off the S-25 HPI engine. When your done with that, go on google and look for pics of modded HPI .18s for reference. Here is my STS, first engine I did. For the crank, I tried using an RB modded engine for the crank face, but all I really did was make cheese out of it haha... But it runs like a raped ape, so no complaints with 9 gallons on it. Tom.
