Nice, be easy with the throttle! I have a ZDZ40 on mine and it's plenty. I tow gliders with it up to 10#

I have a ZDZ40re on mine with a Bisson muffler. I have a 20x8w APC prop. I get all the vertical I would ever need.Knife edge slides with plenty power to climb out. I also tow gliders with it. I am very happy with the performance from the ZDZ, plenty power but not too much! If you page back you will find pics. Maybe I can get some video posted this summer..

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
I'll share my landing tricks with you guy's that are having trouble with bouncing. I make a normal approach throttle at idle as I get to the runway..2-5ft off the ground, I start to slowly pitch the nose up this bleeds off the speed and sets the plane up for touch down (if you pull up elevator too hard it will want to stall so go easy and practice) if it starts to drop too fast add a little power to slow the descent. In this mode elevator is speed and throttle is altitude. when you get it right it will float in and settle right down for a perfect 3-point without a bounce. Practice at altitude first if you need to or don't feel comfortable doing this on landing. The key is, you should reach stall and touch down at the same time good luck!!! and practice, practice, practice

I haven't weighed mine either I have a ZDZ40 it will go straight vertical out of sight. I tow gliders with it too. I noticed my engine makes alot more power now that it is broken in.

Well here it is, top recovered and ready to fly. I tried some water based heat-seal adhesive, It's called Balsaloc. I'll report later on how it works. Some of the original trim was reinstalled using the balsaloc and seems to hold pretty well. The rest is Hanger 9 Ultracote.

Already done, as well as clear over the stars to hold them down. I tried some balsarite at first but even that didn't work. the clear is working fine so far.

I used Ultracote to recover just the top of the wing. True red it matches real good. I've used MonoKote in the past. I like Ultracote better I dont use MonoKote any more, too many bad rolls. they had some problems for a while, don't know if they have it sorted out or not. I would ask LHS to order it in if that's what you use. I recommend Ultracote.

RE: 25% Cessna L-19/0-1 Bird Dog build
Hi guy's have read through the first 18 pages. Just wanted to let you all know what an outstanding job you have done in building and detailing you're models. My buddy has a set of Vailly 1/4 plans. We are going to build together as our skills will compliment one another. I have more building experience and he has more detailing experience. we are going to kit ours from the templates on the plans I have a good selection of wood on hand from past day's of scratch building and am looking forward to starting again. I haven't built anything from scratch for 10 years or so. The last kit I built is now 8 years old and is still flying but has been re-powered recently. Arf's have spoiled me. But this plane and thread have inspired me to build again. I may post some pics of the build and or the finished plane, but I usually don't shoot too many pics of my projects. just a couple pics after completion in case something goes wrong during maiden at least I have something to remember them by. Thankfully that hasn't happened for a long time now. subscribed. Thanx Andy

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
This morning I took N98SD out to the field with the engine running like it should. I met up with some sailplane pilots and put the Decathlon into service as a glider tug. The flights went well, the plane handled aerotow superbly. And the ZDZ performed flawlessly towing a 12' span glider to altitude at half throttle. We were all amazed at how well the whole event transpired. This was my first aerotowing experience but the glider pilots had been towed before, and said I will make a fine tug pilot, and said what a good plane I had to tow with. Props to RC-Guy's for a great design, the more I fly it the more I love it. Aerotowing just adds to it's list of awesome capabilities. I hope all of you are as happy with yours as I am with mine. It truly is a good value.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Speaking of YD-A I was waiting for the release of the 38 too. But I had far less patience than you, so I bolted a ZDZ-40RE on. I bought it pre-owned, the guy said it had never been flown. It had some run time on it, he said a couple tanks. That sounds about right. The plug was black upon inspection. So what ever fuel was run through was at a rich mixture. I found out why when I started running it. It will not pump fuel to start unless the low speed needle is set at 2-1/2 turns and the high at 2. It runs at this setting, but slightly rich mostly at lower throttle settings which is the norm for the Decathlon 1/2 throttle produces a nice cruise speed. So it keeps gas fouling the plugs,,It was missing the prop shaft, and ZDZ rep tells me I can put on a new carb, that will cure my problem. Now here is the kicker. When I called to order a new prop shaft and get some spare plugs, he told me the shaft is nla and the plug are on two week b.o. the new carb is on hold and not available either. So now I have one of the worlds (BEST) engines, and cannot get parts. [:@] not even a spark plug. Now I 'm just waiting for the YD-A. I found a lawnmower shop that carries a similar plug that works. but my cowl mounting screw holes will probably be worn out by the time I can get a 38[:o] I only have a couple gallons of gas to go for the break-in, so I'm hopeful it will get better after I switch mixture. and lean it up some. There is still the possibility it wont pump fuel at a leaner setting without the new carb. Anyone want to buy a ZDZ? [;)]

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
I got thinking about it after i posted that rant, and decided to have another look at the carb. When I got the engine it reeked of stale fuel. So I put a kit in the barb and cleaned it out. I then set the metering lever with my trusty Walrbo gauge. and put it back on, set the needle to ZDZ specs and proceeded to finish the break in. So today I set the metering lever back the way it was when I got it. And wouldn't you know it, I was able to set the needles like a normal engine. starting at 1-1/2 turns and fine tuning from there. It now runs very good and starts and stays running using ZDZ's 5-5-1 starting technique. It just goes to show you, even after being in the lawn & garden industry for 25 years I still don't know Jack. I guess that's why I do garage doors now. I left the John Deere dealer 10 years ago to make more money in construction, to feed my RC addiction. Tomorrow I'm meeting some glider jockey's at the field and I'm gonna learn how to aerotow gliders. PS still waiting for YD-A 38

RE: If you could change or improve AMA in some way ...
I would like to see the fee's lowered. I don't care for the mag either. I would like to be able to join without the mag, and as far as the Ins. It's too high for a secondary. The only reason for me to join these day's is so I can fly at some fields that require AMA. Oh well I just don't fly at those fields. AMA has never done anything for me but cost me money once a year, and on top of that my club broke up and disbanded because of what the AMA said about each club being responsible for accidents on It's own. THANX AMA KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND STOP ASKING YOURSELVES WHY THE MEMBERSHIP IS DECLINING!!!!

I have a ZDZ40re on mine the cyl is right in front of the hole in the lower scoop.do you have a larger exit hole at the bottom rear of the cowl? the cooling air needs to come in the front, pass over the cylinder and exit the rear. rule of thumb is 3 time the size of the entrance area. Running lean will also cause it to overheat.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Thats good to hear. I got another 3 flights on mine today. A couple of the stars are starting to peel up, but a little dab of balsarite had them glued back down just fine I glued one of the stripes on the wing yesterday and that is holding down good. I put a small dab of balsarite on with a q-tip let it dry and Iron it back down. I'm really likeing it it so far and it's different from all the Edges and Extra's. A nice slow, low knife edge arcoss the field had 'em cheering from the pit's today. People aren't used to seeing a plane that looks like a big trainer doing aerobatics It's getting alot of attention so far. Our field is in the forest preserve so we get some regular spectators too. I love the cheers and I love to talk about my planes. I'm gonna love this one, she might turn out to be my regular sunday flier.

RE: Speed Freaks Wanted- Over 200 Members already !
OK thanx. I thought single blade was the way to go for speed!!????? That was the result of bad landing, she needs high rate for the flare They sent an 8x9 with it but I though that would be too small.they also told me it was a screamer, and I wouldn't have to tune the pipe, it was pre tuned. The only worry I have with a higher pitch is, will it take off from a hand toss? I'll start with 9x7 and tune the pipe in. Will the pipe length change change with different props sizes? Thanx Andy

I'm looking for an expert on MVVS engines I'm only getting about 14000 with 10x6 APC.on 10% nitro. I had an old SuperTigre that would do that with the stock muffler on. My question is ..What can I do to get my speed up? I am going to switch to 9x7 APC and start there.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Ok here's what I ended up with for mounting the ZDZ-40. I had to move the amended thrust line 3/8" down to get the cowl lined up. I held a yard stick up to the side of the fuse lined up with the seam on the covering where it goes from red to white my cowl lines up perfectly with the seam and the stripes also. The spinner is perfectly aligned on the front of the cowl. 2" stand offs clear the rear ex. muffler from the firewall by about 3/8" with minimal gap from spinner to cowl it will just fit over the fuse. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Ok. looks to me like the center line should line up at the same spot the color changes from red to white. I look at my cowl and that line runs right through the center of the spinner ring on the cowl my instruction say to mount the cowl and line the engine up with the cowl and mark it out. There is no way to mark out holes for stand offs that way. So if I measure down 1/2" from my original mark, - the down thrust of the firewall that should put it about right by eyeball. looks good thanx guy's

Flymorerc, I was wondering if you have pics of you're ZDZ install?. I marked off the centerline from the amended pics on the thread It looks too high to me the needles on the carb look like they are going to stick through the top of the cowl. I'm trying to line things up before I drill holes in the firewall. Also do you have the rear exhaust? Any info you can give will be much appreciated. Thanx. Does anyone else think the instructions lack dimensions and other important facts? most every thing else has gone together well compared to some of the rest.
