RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
Hey guys, I've got a question that may or may not pertain to the subject at hand... I've got the stock 3.3 engine and stock tranny and gears, but I'm having an unidentifiable problem... about a year ago (I've had my jato put away for quite awhile) I pulled a sick wheely down a driveway and into the street, but only one wheel caught, which caused it to flip. Immediately after flipping, the engine began to redline, but without power going to the wheels. I shut it off, and took it inside as I got to work takin the tranny apart. Easily enough, I found the 1st-gear was stripped all of the way around, and I ordered another. a week later, I replace it and take it out to run, but after I have the engine warm enough and I put a bit of throttle to it, it redlines just like before. (this entire next process happens twice) I take apart the tranny, and look for a stripped gear, but there isn't one to be found. Another unusual problem that I just work around may be related: it never shifts to second, no matter how much tweaking I do to the centrifugal clutch. So is this a problem with, perhaps, a damaged tranny housing? or something else entirely. Thanks ps: I'll be taking apart the tranny later today to see if I can find anything else.

All u need is the carb body, the same thing happened to me a month or so ago, they make those carbs extremely flimsy. Either way, it's an easy fix, so u'll be ready to drive in notime.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
The stock rims are 2.8 but most of the time (besides foams) it's good to go with 2.2s when u run normal tires. Just make sure they don't rub on the wheel hubs cuz sometimes the wheels don't have a big enough offset to fit without rubbing or to fit at all. For the battery just get the flat 5cell nimh pack sort of thing. U also need to make sure u have all of the wire hookups to the charger ready to go.

i've mostly ran proline road-rages, 1 or 2, but other people may have different preferences. if you get problems with the braking, get the aluminium cams from integy (at least i think thats what they're called, i'm typing fast, have to get to my next class :) good luck with it man, it is a beast.

Hha, i was finally getting the tuning down on the new engine and i crached it [:)] i busted the caster block, but its cheap so oh well... but i've really gotten that thing moving now, i was really cranking out the rpms and i finally pulled an honest to god wheely, and it flipped over on its back :) it was sweet. i'll get a new vid up and running when i get the car back up and running in a few days.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
i've got a decent trail, and i think i could lean out the hsn and lsn a little bit each, so tomorrow i'll try it, but be careful at the same time. first of all, what are your average temps?

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
Dang man, I was running it earlier today, and I was watching the temp like a hawk, but I thought it was tuned alright and the absolute max temp was never over 150, which was sort of freaking me out. Is it even possible for it to run an avg temp of 130 and not stall instantly? I was doing high speed runs up and down my street and I'm sure that even at the base of the head it never got past 150.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
aha! looks like u were all right! It's the rx I believe, as I simply jacked an rx froman old rustler and it worked perfect. The engine needs some tuning tho. What should I change if when I give it a bit of throttle it Bogs, but then it sort of "overcomes" it and gets to higher rpms no problem? I'm assuming that I need to lean out the lsn, but if u think I'm wrong, correct me before I blow my engine. Thanks for the help.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
jeez, i just installed my brand spankin new engine in the jato (replacement 3.3), ran it through the first four tanks of break-in and on the fifth, the radio went nuts. its done this sort of thing before, where the controls will work during half the time, and the other half it recieves completely random signals. its pissing me off, and i'm pretty sure that it is just the radio and reciever, but if there are any other ideas, please share. i'll be testing my theory tonight, so if it still does it with a different set of electronics, then i need some serious help.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
good luck with that man :) another thing that you should make sure of is that cam lever isn't stripped around the brake cam, or else you won't get any braking no matter how much you tighten it. if it is, or even if it isn't, i'd get the integy aluminium cam set, they work great and it won't strip out. i'm still waiting for my engine to deliver; i thought it was gonna be here today!! [:@] oh well, tommorow then, break it in, then i'll try to post some vids :)

RE: -Official Traxxas JATO Thread-
hey quietnas, the weirdest problem just came up, and its been there the whole time, but since i've never done a complete rebuild to this engine i never figured it out, and i feel completely retarded now. the sleeve got welded to the crankcase when it overheated...ever heard of it? when i tried to rebuild it today, i tried everything to get the sleeve out, and i assumed that it might have been a bit of warping causing it to be difficult, but i took out an old redcat buggy (yeah, i once was that low) and rebuilt the engine on it in 10 minutes...i barely did anything to the sleeve to get it loose. so i believe that the sleeve could have melted and welded itself into the walls of the crankcase. is that possible? and do u think that it could have run like it did (which means rpm jumping and dying randomly)? this is the weirdest problem i've ever heard of, and if i'm right, it might also be the most expensive for me to fix.

RE: -Official Traxxas JATO Thread-
ORIGINAL: quietnas1 No it would not be a good drop in motor. This one has a rotary carb while the Jato has a slide carb. It is a good motor though. If your looking for a good OS motor at a reasonable price look at the OS .18TM. It will drop right in with no mods.
its all good, i'll find somethin soon. right now i have a really weird problem. first i'll give u all a playbyplay... car perfectly tuned, running great, friend overheats it bad. dies on the spot. it would start, then die within 5 seconds assumed that it was a warped head, bought another. it'll idle, but no throttle or it'll die. then i tweaked a bit and it would take a bit of throttle although the rpms would jump like crazy then today, i bought a new carb because i had figured out that i had a stripped hsn. installed, started perfect, idles perfect, but the throttle is SO weird: the throttle will jump a bit while accelerating while driving straight, it jumps a TON if i'm turning right, and its almost perfect if i turn left. i've never heard of it before, so any ideas r helpful. btw, could it be the shim? i still have the stock on there from before the overheating.

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
ORIGINAL: ajk2649 Yes it could deffinetly be the new head you put on. even tho it says made for the jato....Being that it is not the actual company that makes the head for the jato they could have the measurments off by a tiny bit and that will effect your engine in a big way. Also it may not be the head. when you changed your head 2 the RB head did you take the shims from the old head and put them on the new one? If not that will cause a problem and if you did use the shims then maybe they are also damaged from the high heat caused from the engine over heating and you could have an airlleak from the head. The shims adjust combustion......2 many shims and you have pre-detonation............Not enough shims and you have detonation. Both are not good. for starters if you have not already go back 2 factory setting on the carb and start from there.
OK, here comes a noob question: what do u mean by shims? do u mean the little orange spacer that goes around the base of the head and seals the cylinder? i transfered it to the new head as well. also, factory setting is 1/8 inch on the idle, flush with the housing of the Lsn, and 4 turns out with the hsn?

RE: Official Traxxas Jato 3.3 Thread
the throttle is fine when the car isn't running, but when it's running something else may be causing the problem. of course, i really cant c if the throttle is wrking right when the car is moving....it didn't act up like this with the stock radio, but with the stock radio i didn't get good enough reception (due to me acting stupid) to test the engine out with the new head on. could it be the new head (i got the new "hourglass" RB Inovations head made for the 3.3)? i guess i'll mess around with different combinations of radios and recievers until i can figure out the problem.
