RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood)
Okay, so where can we find these Astro Pneumatic paint guns? George[:D]
ORIGINAL: rainedave I bought a new spray gun. The $10 Harbor Freight gun was fine while I was learning to spray, but it wasted tons of material and just didn't lay down a uniform pattern. What do you expect from a $10 Chines knock-off? Anyway, I spent some time at some of the auto refinishing forums and found out about a $75 HVLP mini-gun that has an excellent reputation. No, it's not a $300 SATA, but from everything I read it comes very close. It's made by Astro Pneumatic and it's model #4020. The best thing about it is that it's designed to operate at 4CFM or less. That's about what my small Craftsman compressor puts out at 30psi. Another nice thing is that, being an HVLP gun, most of the material ends up on the surface you're painting, not in the air as with conventional guns. That's because the nozzle pressure is only 10psi (inlet psi is set to around 40). It can spray a 4 1/2" fan which is plenty large enough for sixty-size models. I can't wait to try it out. I also found out the hard way that it was the red lacquer auto putty that was causing my dope adhesion problems. So, I brushed a very thin coat of finishing resin over the wing fillets and the putty. I'll scuff it with some 320 and the dope should start sticking. Once I get the fuse re-painted I can start with the clear coating. The new gun should make that go pretty fast. The old Harbor Freight gun had about a 2" fan and it took forever to do a wing. But, that's ok. I'm learning as I go. David
RE: MVVS 49 revisited
HELP! I have a .49 to break-in. I have a gallon of Omega FAI fuel - 0% Nitro, 30% Castor, 70% Synthetic, 17% Total oil. I have acquired a pint of Klotz degummed castor oil. How much castor (in ML) do I need to add to mix a quart of my existing fuel for initial break-in as recommended? I am so confused! [:@] RCPILEIT Greenville, NC

RE: What ever happened to the Competitive Fun Fly Airplanes?
Chuck - That would be great!! I was told that the plane was named after the designer's wife. I was introduced to the plane when I was a member of the Myrtle Beach club back in the 80's. As I remember, it used counter weights on the ailerons to prevent flutter, and boy would it spin and loop. [X(] You are correct on the design being named for the designer's girlfiend at the time who later became his wife. I used to hang out with the designer and you are so right about how that plane could spin!! George

555 plug hiarchy
Hello again Mike, I have recently purchased a 555 receiver along with HS-55 servos. I ordered all with the Hitec connectors which I notice can be plugged into the receiver in two directions. Would you please be so kind as to let me know which pin in the receiver is for positive, negative and signal. I don't want to risk frying anything! Thanks, George Oakey rcpileit Greenville, NC

RCD 3400 Receiver Airtronics
Hello Mike, I have the following question. When looking at the top of the case for this receiver with the plugs for the servos on the right side, what hierarchy is assigned to each pin? Is positive the outside pin? etc. What is the middle pin and so on. I have fried one servo playing with this and would like to avoid a future occurrence. I have sent the receiver in for a look and advised no problem exists. Please clear this up for me so I can enjoy this product. Thanks, George Oakey Greenville, NC

So long handlaunch
Greg, I wish I had a better hatch / battery, receiver hold down arrangement that would have allowed me to try inverted. The previous owner just used electrical tape to hold the fiberglass hatch in place and I did not want to dump any thing out if there was a chance to save the plane. It was still responding to my inputs when I last saw it and then I could see nothing of it. the reflective tape on the leading edge was doing its job as that was the last thing I could make out. Oh well that's flying. Thanks for the input. George

So long handlaunch
I managed to lose my handlaunch today. Geez the thermals were strong once I managed to get through the ground layer it was all up and I do mean strong (hat sucking) up!! Trying to spiral in this stuff was of no use. The last I was able to make out it was at around 2000 ft. heading to the north with the breeze! Oh well at least it was lost while flying. Time to try a discus style plane. George
